Really good information and great delivery. The Sound on the Rode VideoMicro is great. This setup really does require keeping a consistent distance from the microphone, so not to overload the volume settings. Once of the reasons the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus or the Rode VideoMic NTG is nice is because it has a safety channel just in case you accidently get loud you still can get clean audio from the other channel. I do find that some cameras have very noisy capacitors, so if you are not running the camera a minimum volume and cranking the microphone at the source you will continue to have background hiss to the recording. I use a Rode VideoMic Pro Plus into an M50 where the M50 is at a minimum volume and I adjust the volume on the microphone to get the right volume and if I adjust the volume on the camera and lower the volume on the microphone then I will start to get background hiss. FYI. I did have an issue where I accidently lefty the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus plugged into power which cause a ground loop and horrible sound. At that point I had to pull audio from another camera, so having a second source of audio is always nice especially if it is a recording you can't redo. If you are using powered cameras be aware of this sort of issue.
Thanks a lot for this. I do a lot of my videos outdoors, and have found wind noise to be a real problem. I look forward to trying your tips out and seeing what difference it makes!

For the past couple years, I've mostly used a Rode Lavalier mic ($60) for Zoom and other teleconferences and for some light office home video. I just upgraded to a highly rated full size USB-C condensor mic, a NEOM. ALong the way, I dug my out rarely used MOVO VXR10 and discovered how good it is as a studio mic. At two ounces, I can just clamp it on an overhead extension arm desk lamp. I also discovered I have a RODE Videomicro (way at the bottom of my box) which also works very well and seems to have less baseline humm than the MOVO. In short, I completely agree with this video.
Thank you so much for this. I recently bought this microphone and was disappointed to find out there was so much background noise in the recording that I couldn't believe that a Rode mix would be defective. With the manual setting of Sound on the camera, I was able to sort that issue out. Yayy!! 😀

I am sooo glad that you made this video. I watch videos about audio and video gear almost religiously. I have seen in passing, about five different videos somewhat complaining about shortcomings of this microphone that don't actually exist. Everything that they are doing is wrong. It is so bad that one 'reviewer' was saying it had low output levels, but did not know how to adjust his input level in his camera. I was just complaining about one of these videos to my wife last night. I know the mic sounds great for it's price because I own one. I really feel like you should at least have a basic knowledge about audio before you post videos as a 'reviewer'. Anyhow, at least you came up on my feed to calm my frustration. Make more videos.

Hello Mark. Thanks for this video. It’s really helpful. Have a qs, hope you can answer. I shoot my videos on iPhone 12 and now looking to use the rode video micro go for better sound. I understand that I need a rode sc7 cable and a 3.5mm to lightening adapter for videomicro to work with iPhone however the videomicro will be at some distance from me as the sc7 cable is not long. How can I bring the mic closer, ie is there a workaround? I want to have the mic as close to my mouth as possible but the trs to trss cable that I’ve looked at are all same length. Faisal
This video was awesome! I have the video micro rode and I always struggle to eliminate the static sound in the background. Even in the editing process but I think this will help thanks!
Thank you, very helpful. It looks like you've got another shoe mount to be able to attach the Rode to a tripod. I have the mic with the original shoe mount. It requires a 3/8" screw so doesn't fit my Joby which has a 1/4 screw.
Mark how much of a sound difference to use Rode VIdeoMicro Me-L that plugs in lightning port of iPhone 13 pro? Some saying you will have a much better quality using one you got with the adaptor. Does it make that much of a difference? Thanks Mark tech man!

Great video especially on the audio level adjustment. I purchased recently a Rode video micro 2. I love the sound quality. However when I use it on my mirrorless camera, it picks up the AF noise of my lens. Now I know people recommended STM lens, or remove the mic on the camera, but is there a solution using my lens and mounting it on the camera?
Thank you. This helped. I’m struggling with the hiss sound. Only happens when I use a 12 foot trs to trrs cord (I’m using a video micro and iPhone combo) Any ideas or apps I could use to adjust the audio settings for iPhone? Thanks again
I am using this micro and my camera is Fujiflm XT100. However there are so much buzzing noise, always feels like raining sound in the background (but in a very uncomfortable way). Is there something wrong with my micro or camera? How do I fix it?
Try other cables. Had that issue with a Comica. Try other camera, had that issue with a Canon 5D II. Check for sources of magnetic interference. Try a recording app on your phone. You will be able to work out if its the mike, connection or recorder.
Thank you for this video! Even implementing all these tips (which have helped), I'm still getting a static buzzing sound in the background of my videos, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any advice? 😩
This is so hard to diagnose in a comment, but I'll try. Three things I would look at,, first is the cable, (1) is it plugged in properly (pushed all the way in) (2) is it the right cable, the cable that came with the mic is made for a camera, not a computer or phone (3) is the cable faulty, try another cable. After that it could be just bad pre-amps in the camera, or a faulty mic.
@@markwiemels ah, it very well could be the cord. I have been using a longer one that I bought separately so I could put the mic closer to me, but I'll try the original cord to see if the buzzing goes away. thank you so much for your reply!
Awesome and informative video. I invested in a Røde Video Micro this year and using that mic alone. I am still learning to use this mic but it is great for its price and works well with my needs
Can Rode help me, please? I have the early Canon M50i, which has no 3.5mm audio port. Can I fit a mike to the hot shoe, or to the HDMI port in the side of the camera?
Hey mark had to share with you : ) after bouncing all over the place on a camera purchase I ended up with the M6 (Mark) II , I cant help but think of you synonymous with the entire M series LOL I had a M3 come in from Amazon with a nick on the sensor I have no idea why they would have sent me that as "very good" condition? Anyway gave up on rolling the dice again. I was close to getting the Sony A6100 but already owning 2 great Canon lenses I relented. Thank you for being the information center for the M cameras : )
Great to hear. That's a great camera, I own, and have owned, a lot of cameras. The M6 Mark II is my favourite, it really is a pro level camera in a tiny little package.

Thanks for your complete explanation about VideoMicro. I have a question for you: can you suggest me a cable to connect Rode VideoMicro with smartphone with Jack 3.5mm? The on on the box isn't suitable for smartphone. Thanks for your reply.
Hi Mark, I appreciate this information and I wanted an affordable microphone for my new UA-cam effort..on a budget. I subscribed. Cheers from British Columbia
This is the best video I've seen done on this mic so I'll ask the question here. Would you think I could use this mic with a longer cable and run it straight into a switcher? Blackmagic ATEM Mini switcher if you are familiar with it. Would a longer cable work at all?
Amazing video. I have a question about white noise. I have a canon EOS R and I bought the rode video micro not too long ago, and whenever I record I am getting quite a bit of white noise. Just a constant hissing. Any tips on how to work around it??
First, make sure you have set your levels manually and they are giving you a -12 to -6db reading, from the loudest sound you are recoding. Double check the cable is secure. If you still have the hiss it could be faulty mic, camera, or cable, or it could just be the pre-amps in that camera in general are not very good. This can be fixed by using an amplified mic like the Deity D3, D3 Pro, or sennheiser MKE-400.
@@markwiemels The Nikon D5300 of mine has terrible hissing whatever mic (Rode Videomic GO and Sennheiser MKE200) I use with it. The same mics have no noticeable hissing on my other cameras, so the camera pre-amp is one of the first places to look.
hi mark with regards to putting the mic as close to the source does the gain knob matters? how much should i set it on? i noticed i can even pick up noice from blocks away, im using a rode video mic ntg.
Is it possible to connect this mic to a PC ? I have a M1 Mac mini and I was wondering if it possible to plug it to my MacMini with a TRS to TRRS cable into my mini's 3.5mm jack. will it work? I could go for the VideoMic Go II and call it a day but its out of my budget curently.
I came here looking how to setup my rhode microphone on my desktop. Browsed you channel but only camera setups are coming up. I had it nicely configured before but the computer reset it and need to make adjustments again 😓
Hi Mark! I'm using the Pro Plus with my iPhone 13 Pro. When I test the mic in audio notes, I can see it's connected and working. When I record video now, that sound is being captured through the camera application? For example, if I upload the videos to my computer and start to edit, I will be listening to the Rode mic sound, not the iPhone's audio?
This normally is caused by the pre-amps in the camera. Make sure you set the audio levels manually, I think I cover that in this video. If you still have issues it just means that you need a mic with a stronger signal into the camera, or you need to get the mic closer to you (to give a stronger signal), or you need to speak louder so that you don't have to turn up the camera pre-amps too much (once again giving a stronger signal).
great video, about to start using this mic now... sound tests have been great. One issue for me, does anyone here use it with the ZV-1 and find that the huge dead cat sneaks into the frame? Trying to figure out if I can pull it back with something or need to shave the dead cat lol
Hello, my name is Anthony and the reason I’m sending this message is I was wondering if you know what adapter is good for my canon rebel t6 cause I have recently gotten my hands on a rode video micro external mic and I just realized it didn’t fit and I would like to start video recording with my camera and rode mic. I’m want to start a vlog and these are the equipment I’m starting off on
I have a Minolta 4K camcorder. It doesn't have sound recording settings and the sound quality from the internal mic is warped like you described. Will the sound still be warped if I use an external microphone?
Tried this mic to record on my computer, but can’t get good levels, usually way under -18db. So went further and paired the mic with vxlr+ adapter for phantom power then used an iRig pre as a preamp. Still not happy with the results. Went further, mixed an old usb sound card Creative Xfi to send the iRig pre output to the mic input of the sound card then over usb to the computer. Those were the most acceptable results. Need to mention that the preamp was kinda maxed. Decided to shell out some more money and bought another board, Audient ID4, mk2 with usb type-c. So now going like: rode videomicro - vxlr+ - audient mk4 - computer. But this forces me to boost the preamp in audient to max to get some NOT so great volumes, usually again under -18db. So I’m kinda out of ideas. Just can’t get decent audio levels (-12db - -6db) from this mic, don’t understand the problem, the mic is less than 0.5meters away from me to the right side and pointing towards my mouth. Thinking to buy something like a cloudlifter or maybe another shotgun mic if this will solve my problem. Ideas? Thanks!
When you talk about speaking behind a camera / handycam companies should have put a switch in there so we could switch to omnidirectional or a pop-up microphone you can swivel backwards 🤟
This mic wiggles around like mad if walking and vlogging and sometimes the dead cat gets in shot. Have you had this problem? Maybe looking into tying down the shock mount so it doesn't move
One more basic sound processor that should always be used in post-production is compressor/limiter. That makes the voice much more pleasant for listener and helps to level up inconsistencies in your voice and in recording levels.
Yes, for sure! I have been meaning to do a tutorial on that.
Oh yes please. Even huge channels still don't use compressor/limiter and it is annoying when watching it with speakers.
Agreed. Limiter/compression/de-esser can be applied in OBS as well. For those that are streaming.

Mark, this was fantastic. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the explanation, it helped a lot!
Great to hear!
Awesome and informative video. I invested in a Røde Video Micro this year and using that mic alone. I am still learning to use this mic but it is great for its price and works well with my needs
It's a great mic!
i liked the ideea of tunning sound and get voice to sound like more expensive mics. thanks for sharing!
Great to hear! Thanks!
Hi , ty for vide
What u think ig i connect to my sony zv e10
What will be the best audio lvl ön my camera ? Ty for the ansverr :)
Not sure, just play with it.
Can Rode help me, please? I have the early Canon M50i, which has no 3.5mm audio port. Can I fit a mike to the hot shoe, or to the HDMI port in the side of the camera?
Super helpful video, thanks for posting. :-) I have ordered a longer lead to move the mic closer.
Good to hear.
Such a clear video! Thanks for the info
Is this microphone good if I am going to be sending my footage to an editor to edit ?
Excellent video, thank you!
Hey mark had to share with you : ) after bouncing all over the place on a camera purchase I ended up with the M6 (Mark) II , I cant help but think of you synonymous
with the entire M series LOL I had a M3 come in from Amazon with a nick on the sensor I have no idea why they would have sent me that as "very good" condition?
Anyway gave up on rolling the dice again. I was close to getting the Sony A6100 but already owning 2 great Canon lenses I relented. Thank you for being the information
center for the M cameras : )
Great to hear. That's a great camera, I own, and have owned, a lot of cameras. The M6 Mark II is my favourite, it really is a pro level camera in a tiny little package.
Thanks for your complete explanation about VideoMicro. I have a question for you: can you suggest me a cable to connect Rode VideoMicro with smartphone with Jack 3.5mm? The on on the box isn't suitable for smartphone. Thanks for your reply.
You need a TRS to TRRS adapter, or cable, easy to find on Amazon or e-bay.
@@markwiemels thannk, i found one on amazon, i'll tried it when i'll receive.
Thanks for this video! It was very helpful!! :)
You're so welcome!
Hi Mark, I appreciate this information and I wanted an affordable microphone for my new UA-cam effort..on a budget. I subscribed. Cheers from British Columbia
Great to hear!
This is the best video I've seen done on this mic so I'll ask the question here. Would you think I could use this mic with a longer cable and run it straight into a switcher? Blackmagic ATEM Mini switcher if you are familiar with it. Would a longer cable work at all?
Yes, as long at the unit take a TRS input, it will be fine.
@@markwiemels thanks for the answer, very helpful. I'll check if it works in couple of days
Yes, the closer the mic is to your sound source, the more you can dial back the gain and reduce the effect of those distant sounds.
@@markwiemels thanks for your reply this helps a ton
Some great advice! I love this little microphone
It really is soo good!
What about placing pop filter in front?
Is it possible to connect this mic to a PC ? I have a M1 Mac mini and I was wondering if it possible to plug it to my MacMini with a TRS to TRRS cable into my mini's 3.5mm jack. will it work?
I could go for the VideoMic Go II and call it a day but its out of my budget curently.
Yes, that will work.
I came here looking how to setup my rhode microphone on my desktop. Browsed you channel but only camera setups are coming up. I had it nicely configured before but the computer reset it and need to make adjustments again 😓
Very helpful I have that mic. Never used it though.
@4:40 I honestly thought you said "ant piss". Which actually sounds quite fitting :D
haha... funny.
Yes, that should be the case.
Great Video, thank you and useful info. 📸🎙🎙🎙🎙
Is this good for recording footsteps? Like walking past the camera for about 10-15 yards
Yes, should work well.
Hi Mark, I experienced a to of white nose, static, in the backround. Have the same microphone. Do you know how I can control the level of white noise?
I’m want to start a vlog and these are the equipment I’m starting off on
Great video. Very informative thank you.
Very welcome
Great tips Mark 👍🏻 I have now the rode micro and I will try it out 😉👍🏻 best cinematic greetings from a small german UA-cam filmmaker 😂
Great! nice to hear from you.
I have a Minolta 4K camcorder. It doesn't have sound recording settings and the sound quality from the internal mic is warped like you described. Will the sound still be warped if I use an external microphone?
It's hard to be sure what the issue is without trying it.
Great video
Thanks!
Nice video with quality tips!
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thanks.
This mic wiggles around like mad if walking and vlogging and sometimes the dead cat gets in shot. Have you had this problem? Maybe looking into tying down the shock mount so it doesn't move
The cable can clip into the think that you turn to lock into the hot shoe. The little notches hold the cable.
Great video!
Thank you for your kind words!
