    Hey Dee, great tips here. I have one additional one to share - when using images to make b-roll, consider slow zooming or panning to get the effect of motion. As you say this might help to sync with the vibe of the video. Great work!

      @DeeNimmin  6 років тому +2

      Hey Gord! Yes! That’s a great tip!

    Awesome video, Dee. I have never really used a lot of B-roll footage but I am definitely going to now....I mean, I'm not interesting enough to keep people's attention for longer than a goldfish's. A friend of mine told me to pretend that everyone watching your video has A.D.D. In order to keep their attention, there needs to be a lot going on....in terms of jump-cuts, b-roll, pictures etc. This apparently helps with keep the attention of the audience. Once I noticed that, I started noticing it everywhere I consumed content i.e. TV, UA-cam, basically everywhere that has something to watch.

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 років тому

      Your friend is correct. It’s difficult to hold attention these days. All the more important for creative editing, b-roll, and making an engaging video. And like everything else, it’s just something you have to practice at and experiment with to find the sweet spot for your content.

    Thanks for the video Dee, I've got to admit that B-Roll is something that I'm just starting to think about in my footage, but my issue is making sure that it's smooth and stable. I can't afford a Gimbal (yet), so I've really got to think about what I shoot, especially since my content is outdoor sports orientated. I do agree though, that talking head videos do get boring if you don't add something else in there!

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 років тому

      I’d use a tripod then and just do slow pans and tilts with it for the sport shots. You can get inexpensive travel type tripods.

  • @SavageScientist

    Hey Dee, I travel alot so I just started shooting freeways and things that interest me on the road. Also filming a random crowd of people just to have that footage never know when it will come in handy. Im now good enough at editing to start incorporating it. But this next set of videos Im about to post will be my first great use of it.

    Great video Dee. I have started shooting b-roll for my channel (haven't used them yet though). Since I have a wellness channel, I use timelapse, hyperlaspe, and slow motion of runners, cyclists, fun places in NYC, people in restaurants, etc. I do all that with my ZTE Axon 7 Mini and it has both slow motion and timelapse features built in. Makes it super easy to create b-roll video.

      I love seeing people take action and make progress. I'm excited for you. Owen seriously knows his craft. Just looked at your channel real quick, I LOVE what you did with your thumbs, just beware of the time stamp. It's cutting into some of the text when it's on the right side of the thumb.

    Until I watched this video I always wondered what everyone meant when they said b-roll footage when I watched a couple how to edit videos and other creators behind the scenes videos etc... and brought that up now I know what it is and now I’m starting to understand and or figure out why they talk about long hours making videos.

    I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around B-roll of my cooking show. I have the food cooking, me talking, cutting and chopping, sizzles and grilling and all that. I know if I could implement some good be roll into my vids I would get more watch time. Thanks for inspiration Dee

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  6 років тому +1

      B-roll for a cooking channel could be a close up of a knife cutting food or close ups of something being poured into a pan or cup, milk into a measuring cup, dicing the onions close up, smoke coming off the top of a pan or skillet, sharpening your knife, and so on. It would be all the little shots / supporting shots that would help tell the story of whatever you’re cooking.
      It sounds like you have a lot of that already so you might be in good shape.
      Where do you buy your food? If you get it at a market you could film a little there to set the tone.
      Probably a good idea to watch pro cooking channels on TV and see how they put it together.

    Just thought of a good idea. What about doing a video on how different phones perform in recording video under different situations. Maybe an iPhone 7 vs X or iPhone vs Android and what settings you use to get them the same in outdoors, indoors etc. Hopefully this provides ideas for a number of videos.

    • @DeeNimmin

      @@DeeNimmin Great. Glad to provide inspiration. I know sometimes I have a ton of things going on in my head and it often kills the inspiration or puts things on the back burner, but when people are interested it really amps me up and gets me ready to do it. I look forward to the video.
