I just bought these. An absolutely incredible set of wide variety of sounds! I was interested in the background of who made these sounds, and here I am. 🥰
@@hoffonoffoThank you so much! Yes it’s us Libby and Marcel and we’re still out there recording. Thank you so much for your support! 🎉
hello sir, can I use the sound for my youtube content purposes? @@FreeToUseSounds
THANKS! I've been distracted about my passions for about 40 years, now i'm 56 and consider not late to begin... i've got a project of creating audiovisual content but focusing a little bit more on audio... You helped to increase my motivation... again THANKS A LOT from Argentina!
Field recording is one of the most wonderful things because you go outside and suddenly become SO MUCH MORE aware of your environment. I have been doing this since i had a little Cassette recorder with stereo mics and at first i only did it to have my own Foley Sounds for my own audio- and film projects. But it really has an effect on you too. In 2009 i had gotten a little second hand MiniDisc walkman from Sony and took it everywhere i went and recorded things with a little T.Bone ST40 stereo mic and often listened to these recordings when i was laying in bed. I loved that and also the process of recording any kind of environment. You hear things differently and it almost becomes an out of body experience where time somehow doesn't exist anymore. The best thing is when you turn these recordings into an audio story and basically going on a journey with your eyes closed and only with your ears.
Infectious excitement!
Glad to hear that :)
Very inspirational story! I started using the Zoom f6 because of you and love it! Enjoy Reykjavik.
Ah that is so cool! Yes the Zoom F6 is a great field recorder and super cool that you enjoy it the same then I do. Lets make sure someday we are on a recording session together.
@@FreeToUseSounds Would be awesome.

Thank you for this video I feel lifted my spirit I feel passionate and confidence to persuit my dream again.
Please do it!!
I rarely leave comments but I have to say that you are truly inspiring and make incredible recordings and content! I am watching so many of your videos. I have learned a great deal from you and I have bought a lot of my own field recording gear based off of your videos. Please keep making this content and chasing your passion and again thank you so much all you are doing!
Thank you so much Justin! We have a new video coming out tonight! We hope to see you there!
I agree with you, the world is brighter when we do things out of passion.
Exactly right. For myself photography changed the way I see the world around me.
That boat is naturally making a braam sound!!! Just bought my first h1n field recorder!!!!
Yeah!!
That’s the way, doing what you love to do. No matter what the rest of the world could say about your passion of life. That’s the way to be happy, doing what you like to do best. Keep doing and thinking this way 👍👍👏👏

Hi. Just bought a zoom h1n last week. This video made me more motivated to use it. Thank you 😊
That’s awesome!
Me too.
Your passion for audio makes this video even more exciting! Great work.
Thank you Whitney!! :)
I recently got an H1n for a music project and discovered how much fun it is going around recording things, hitting things together to see what sounds you can make and just listening to the sounds of life :-)
Hi Stephen. The H1n is a great recorder. Glad you have fun :)
I've been following your videos for years, the world of audio recording in the field has always fascinated me, I have a passion for music and audio equipment for live events, I also deal with mixing and mastering in the recording studio and thanks to your videos I discovered a new world !!! a few days ago I bought zoom f6 and I'm starting to record! thanks for letting me take this new adventure.
Thats awesome Pasquale!!

wow I haven’t watched a video this good in a long time, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I find your story very inspiring and you have visited some beautiful places that i’d love to go to some day. I just ordered a tascam recorder the other day but now considering sending it back when it arrives and getting a zoom after reading things online. Either way, I can’t wait to record sounds here in the UK. Thanks for the video, will be watching loads more of your videos
Hi Louis! Thank you so much for watching and your nice comment. We have already two more videos lined up for this week :). Have fun recording new sounds and see where it goes.
Thanks for sharing this!

You are a cool dude, thanks for sharing your experience!
My inspiration!
Yeah!! We waited for your comment. I hope you enjoyed it.
Great Video....I also have the Zoom H1n and use it with Clippy EM-172 mics ....it's a fanastic setup.
Oh yes the Clippy are great tiny microphones. The fact that they have a 3.5 input makes it very easy to use.
Thank you both, I enjoy your videos. Technique and adventure well balanced.
Thank you!
Thank you for amazing story Marcel! I use my Zoom h1 for over than 8 years now, and I was started to be a little ashamed to use it for more professional audio recording in game audio nowadays. After hearing your story, I'm more comfortable with the idea that passion and the actual sound you're recording is more important than the gear, because even the small Zoom h1 gets the things done nicely!
Hi Jakub! Thank you for watching and yes. These small recorders are amazing and for sound effects and sound design a small handy recorder like the H1n is amazing.
@@FreeToUseSounds I have sometimes issue with selfnoise made by the plastic case, when you hold it too tight or loose it creaks. Do you find the same problem with the newer version?
@ I never run into this issue to be honest.
@@FreeToUseSounds I guess it's just with the first version I have. Thanks, Marcel, I think I'll look into an upgrade soon :)
@ I get the creaking on my h2n! Did you manage to upgrade? I bit the bullet and am currently waiting for my f6 and lewitt mics to arrive in the mail 😁
you are truly inspirational. i want to do what you do. and it looks like you answered my question where to start.
That is great to know!! :)
Super inspiring video
Thank you for watching!!
Very inspiring video!
Thanks so much!
Inspirint story! Thank you.
Nice video! I just got my H1n recently and am loving playing around with it. I never knew I liked recording sound so much.
Question. In your early days when you were getting bird sounds and other outside sounds with your H1, were you using any kind of wind or pop filter, or were you just using the H1 in its birthday suit?
I'm finding that it's VERY susceptible to wind/breezes so might need to do something about that :)
Hi Tom. Oh yes I used a windjammer. You have to buy them external. You can go with the Zoom Universal Windjammer what is a little big but works or you checkout Rycote Mini Windjammer For Zoom H1n. That should help. :)
I love this video! Thank you! I also have the zoom h1n1, but I am struggling to use it for recording my singing bowls. It literally records even the noise on the background haha
This is cool! I just bought an H1N for a video class I’m taking and I started thinking I wonder if there is a market for stock audio and I did some research and it turns out there is. Then UA-cam fed me your video. Good stuff.
Glad you found us :)
Bravo !!!
Thank you!
Wonderful! To see and hear how passion guided you 👍🏻 As an audio-freak myself, still looking for that 'perfect' minimum gear to use when recording outside and the wind is blowing ..... tips and tricks in another video perhaps? 😃 Keep this coming friends!
You are on the right channel. :) I got several options so check out the Audio Technica 4025 video. Die Cinela Albert or the Cyclone are maybe to large if you want to keep it to a minimum.
is it possible to record the northern lights??, that would be really cool!

Great sharing ❤❤❤
How do you prevent static noises when recording in the city? Having this issue with Zoom H1N
As I mentioned on another video, I don’t have static noise.
@@CosmoSkerry Yeah there must be something wrong with the device. Record the static and send them the file.
Nice vid but can you cover a bit how you make a living with that? I have a zoom hn4pro, a pair of clippy's and a shotgun mic, im just recording for hobby but if i want to buy more gear i need to have an income
Hi Lello, thank you for watching! You don't have to buy more gear. Use the gear you have and start recording. You have already more gear as I when I started out recording sounds. How I make a living while traveling around the world is by working 12 to 16 hours every single day on our business. We will make a more in depth video about it for sure.
Thanks for making so many great videos!
I am a new sub and watching your videos makes me feel like starting recording asap!
What do you think about the zoom H2N, compared to H1N, would it be better for field recording? Sound quality wise, would you recommend H2N over H1N?
Hi, thanks for your video, it has been bery inspirational. I am trying to learn as much as I can about sound in general, I have been researching on a good entry level sound recorder, but I have one further complication: I am blind. and I am having a hard time finding a recorder that I can operate with buttons alone, many of them seem to havetactile screens for using them efectively. Can you please recommend a model that would be easy to use for a blind newby?
Awesome video, thank you! What would you recommend for close up sounds of cooking videos? I'm thinking of getting the H6, is that overkill?
Hi Daniel. That depends. Do you want to record just the sounds of the cooking or with you talking? H6 is XY but if you want to be closer with less room noise, look into cardioid or super cardioid microphones.
@@FreeToUseSounds really appreciate the reply. I’m looking for cooking sounds to sync with video. No voiceover
Thank you ! for me is important to get the best microphone would you please show me how to get the big ball ?
The "big ball" is not a microphone.
Inspirational.
Thank you Richard!
Can a field recoder pick up the loud music from my neighbors upstairs... and next door?
Hi Fred. Oh yes, if you can hear, the recorder can pick it up! But I would also recommend getting a dB metering device and take photos of it. That way you can really see how loud it is. Sorry about such neighbors :(
Love this video! Have you ever recorded and processed sound for surround sound (5.1/7.1)? Is that a difficult thing to do?
I'm doing this right now. :) I also have the Schoeps DMS and create surround sounds with the Schoeps DMS plugin.
Wonderful video. I've been considering a Zoom H8, which brought me to this video.
Question, what is that magnet/mic you attached to the boat ramp?
Hi Joshua! Thats the LOM Geofon :)
@@FreeToUseSounds hey, thanks for the response - appreciate it!
Hi, I have one question. Can you phantom power an audio technica bp4025 mic using a Sony PCM-D100?
As I know, the D100 has no XLR output but I think they made an adapter for the 50. If you could get your hands on this, it could work but you have to make your research before.
Can you suggest how to set H1N to record wind sound i'm a new one begginer coz I want to record the nature sound.Thank you for advance.
To record wind sound you need better wind protection. It won’t work with a recorder like this however if you can hide the recorder facing the wind, it works. Also recording wind trough cracks works. Just make sure the wind doesn’t blow right into the microphone capsules.
Even my life is being changed by this hobby 💛
That is so wonderful.
Me getting a DJI mic and watching this video 😂
Mohon petunjuk sy msh pemula rekaman lapangan seperti merekam hujan, sungai dan suara burung sekarang sy punya zoom h1n untuk meningkatkan kualitas rekaman bagus mana zoom f3/tascam8 atau zoomf6 terimakasih atas perhatianya...salam🇲🇨
This is awesome, a few months ago I recorded my first big sample pack while away in a forest/beach location along the Great Ocean Road in Australia, I ended up with about 50 percussive sounds and 50 fx/ambience sounds, I use them in every song i write now.
The only thing I had an issue with really was setting the gain for consistent sound levels across different samples. Are you making sure you hit a similar gain when recording no matter the sample or do you even out the levels in post? Cheers mate!
Hi Sam! That sounds like fun. If Australia opens up we would come and do a 3 month trip in a camper van. :) With the F6 I don't use gain anymore but before I hit record I adjust the levels on the conditions. Later in post I do this too.
Hello, What is that contact microphoe?
You mean the AKG C411 pp?
Is the Zoom H6 good for nature sounds? I heard it may be too loud? Love to have an all in one recorder and the H6 seems to be the ticket.
Hi Justin! It’s a good recorder for sure but if it gets to quiet in nature, it has its limits.
@@FreeToUseSounds First off, thank you for responding! Do you have any recomendations ? I love the idea of having one recorder for all my needs. The H6 would be great to pair with my DSLR. But I do want to be able to record some great sound effects.
@@Pict8kr17 Hi Justin, then an H6 is a good recorder. You can also buy different capsule for this one. They have a 2020 H6 modell released but you can also look into the H8. Its more bulky for sure but the sound is a little better. I make a H6 H8 comparison video soon.
what is the devices at 8:04?
Do you ever record under water?
Yes. We have several videos about hydrophones plus many underwater sound libraries.
Hope Zoom sends you the new H8 to test. Would be great to see how you’d put it to use.
Oh yes I already requested the recorder and hope that it arrives. But shipping to Iceland can take a while. Still waiting for a package since over a month.
Hi Mike. Not sure if you saw it but I made a recorder about H8 :)
I always carry a Zoom H1 in my backpack. It's a little beast and small so it is always with me. I first seen it being used to record Foley sounds for the Blade Runner 2049 movie in one of their behind the scenes videos. Yep that's right, the sound designers used it in the opening sequence of that movie to record the water boiling on the stove. The moment I seen the ZOOM logo I googled it and found one at my local store... I never ran so quick to get it. Since then I use it for work and side projects. Love your channel and great video :)
Oh wow! What a cool story :) It is definity a great recorder and I'm glad I have them always in my bag. :)
hey is the H6 can do everything that H1N can do? or do I need to buy both H6 and H1n?
I hardly leave comments but this video is genuinely inspiring and it empowers small beginner creators like me. I do have a Zoom H1 from a decade ago and would like to use it more now to explore what are my passions in this creative journey and not worry about how to make a living out of it but let it come naturally. Thank you for sharing your story!
I know right?
Thank you so much!!
Awesome message. Just bought myself a Tascam DR-05X to start recording sounds for my electronic tunes I make. This is really what I need to see to get myself out of a slump of drinking heavily 3-4 times a week and struggling to make my music because often I'm recovering from a big night out. Thank you, this is very uplifting, and I totally agree with what you say about passion.
One time I was recording the sounds of boats, and big ships going into, and out of the San Pedro Harbour. I set the recorder on top of a low flat rock, facing the harbour.
On the playback, about fifteen or twenty minutes into the recording, I heard the sound of some kind of animal snffing the recorder!
I think it might have been a skunk.
Yo that comment was it for me!
Nice video and tips please next time do not keep on recording, your voice, music and crenaky sounds over and over while you are talking is really noisy and persistent!
Thanks for the tip!
You are so inspiring! I am new at recording (H1n) and I am learning a lot with you! Greatings from Brazil! Hope to see you here!
Yo man... I've been a live sound engineer for over 15 years with the military, and definitely consider myself a bit of an audiophile. This video was absolutely awesome. I love your enthusiasm and encouragement. I have slept really well for years using rain noise, and this video is definitely inspiring me to get some field recording gear and go record my own soundscapes to share with other people that want really high quality ambient noise to sleep to, or study, or just have on. The poorly looped recordings just aren't cutting it. And with my knowledge in sound design and audio gear, I think I could do a bang up job!
If you had to start all over again, would you go with the Audio Technica stereo mic you spoke about? What's the market like for 3D sound nowadays?
Thanks again for sharing this with us. I really enjoyed it! Everything about it is top notch!
For sleeping, Owls and mountain wind soundscapes do it for me. But, you're right regarding poorly looped recordings.
Just to see true passion in someone is a real pleasure. This was a great presentation and the photos from your travels as well as the video clips just polished it off perfectly.
I am a 30 year stock photography veteran and only have a H1N for audio, but now...... well the new adventure begins...... Thank you both for this.
That’s awesome!!
Wow I wasn’t even looking for this video, but it’s great! I was actually dabbing with the idea of doing something like this for my local area.
Go for it!!
Hi!
After 3 years, do you still recommend H1n to beginners? Isn't there any newer alternative out there?
In a review I saw the following points about H1n, what do you think about them?
- The firmware update (to be downloaded from the Zoom homepage) is an older version than the version already installed in the device (!).
- The often criticised rattling of the volume buttons on the sides has still not been resolved.
- The hand-touch noise attenuation is also missing (you can hear every smallest finger tapper. If possible, you should place the part on a sative or lay it down - although it is referred to as a “handheld”).
Who cares because its only 50-60 bucks. If you want quality then get something in a higher price range.
@@TheChameleon2008 $60 for H1n with money for mics or $190 H6 and maybe one $50 mic
I really loved this video. It's a really heartwarming honesty to admit that you have to start with nothing and no experience and build your way up.
I'm trying to launch my own project of field recordings, would you have any advise on what equipment to buy or what brands to lean towards?
Hi! Thank you so much for watching and your question. I made a video about the AT 4025 and if you haven’t watched it yet? I talk about this. I wish I would like to have this one, back in the days when I started out with recording.
your videos are a source of inspiration. I'd like to ask you for advice. if you want to start building my own database, a personal sound library, can you suggest me how to organize the library, name the files, create a sheet containing all the information on the audio recording (place, equipment) to locate the files etc. ? having already dealt with all this, can you suggest the choice that was best for you? thank you very much

Such a great video! Wonderful work Libby! Smooth camera work, interesting wide and closeup shots, and some fun cinematic sound effects. Fun titles and graphics too! Thanks to both of you for putting this inspiring retrospective together.
Thank you so much Scott! We had so much fun making this video and knowing that and others enjoyed it gives us the motivation to create more. :)
Thanks for the inspiration.
I got an Olympus sound recorder and am still using it to record birds sounds. Now I like to do more videos of wildlife but because of the noise from my Len's Auto focus, I recently bought a Rode video mic to do a better wildlife sound recording rather than the camera's built-in microphone.
Love the passion in your eyes ;) Can you recomend what kind of mic should I use to create no talking bushcraft videos? It should record the sounds of nature and at the same time the sounds of putting tent, cooking food, etc
That means you should look into an omnidirectional microphone
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks.
And do you think it's a good idea to use recorder like zoom h6 instead of mic and put it on my camera like an on-camera mic?
@@bear_on_a_bike You can do however you like. If you only have a Zoom H6 and you don't want to invest in different gear just try it out.
I'm a beginner videographer and I'm so glad UA-cam algorithm brought me here! Your advice about starting as a beginner gave me much more courage. I also have a Zoom H1n recorder for past 9 years and never really used it. I'm gonna learn how to record video footage with excellent sound captured. Thank you for this video. Subscribed!
Liebe Grüße. I film at very loud (120+ dB) festivals where it gets hot, wet, a bit rough etc. I'm desperately looking for a better way to record the audio because it's sometimes so loud that the iPhone mic distorts or I need a backup recording method to place somewhere away from the camera, or to talk into. It needs to be light and relatively rugged. Any ideas? Mfg.
I want to do immersive Videos from Motorcycle Motorsport. What Starter Microfon do you recommend for this loud Sounds ? I want to pic up all the small Pops and Bangs on the side of the Track 🙏
Your Video made me hyped thank you !
Inspiring. Beats trying to load a house up with junk!
Hi, Thanks 👍 I've started recording birdsongs on the little tripod with the Zoom h1n. However, the lead on my Beyerdynamic cans makes noise when I move. So, I'd like to monitor with bluetooth cans. Do you have any ideas? Perhaps a battery bt transmitter, but how to pair it with bt cans 🤔 (I'm rather minimalist, so don't have a laptop... only an ipad and android phone)
i love the sounds you are producing. They are very calming. Could you maybe publish asmr videos where only a specific sound can be heard, or maybe a playlist with sounds that go well with each other. I think many people would actually like that.
first of all: thank you for this kind of video, how you share your passion for field recordings! i have a qustion.. i am listener of an ambient/experimental music, especially the guy who is under the name 'the humble bee' craig tattersall. he is using a lot of field recordings for his production. so.. my qustion is: is it a huge work in post-processing after you record something/sound? what tools you are using for that process?
Brother and Sister, thank you for being you, following your dream, inspired to bring it to life to share with the world. Like you I am obsessed with the sights and sounds of life, in my case I have been recording the sound of the human voice informally through the Olympus USB recorder since 2001. I sense by writing this right now, I will new adding a new podcast or audio channel to our community site soon. Would you mind if I mentioned you as my source of inspiration?

I stumbled across your channel just now. I’ve always been obsessed with recording sounds, and you have inspired me to further this passion of recording sounds.
Same here ,have been sound designing for a while now..stumbled upon this video inspires me to venture in field recording
Can you recommend a microphone that's good for recording sound in nature, but also blocks the wind well? I also need it to be relatively compact in size. Thanks!
Great video thank you. Could I please ask the best setup to use to record the deep rumble of a Harley Davidson while on the bike. i watch a lot of moto vlogs and the sound of the bikes is never properly captured . Thank you ( I already have a sennheiser 416 )
Hi, I'm from Vietnam, Thank you very much for your sharing, can you guide me how to record the sound of falling rain without getting the microphone wet?
Hello, Google led me to you, I am looking to do nightime recordings of my outdoors, i would like to pick up sounds 500 meter radius or more, sounds like loons from the lake, or owls /frogs crickets/and animals in the night. i would like to mount the mic on my covered porch, and be able to plug it into computer possibly? also what i might need for wind. what are your thoughts?
