The current Shepherd I have now is from working bloodlines and when I got her at 10 weeks old, she had so much play drive at such a young age she'd constantly push toys into my leg instinctively. Such a joy to train when they're like that. At 3 years old now she'll literally punch you in the stomach with a tug. Lol..
There's nothing better than playing with your dog like this. It bleeds over to their training, too, because they enjoy being with you and want to work with you. Building strong, confident dogs with strong relationships. Great video!
It has been amazing of ur materials , it is facts , simple and honest. We need someone like ru to teach us humans to enjoy our dogs. If I may have suggested the tools u r using , mostly the pet shops r not available, could u make it happen, so everyone can buy from u, think of business to u , thank you
My dog demands to ‘play’ all the time! I incorporate training with play. He works then we play together! We play Tug, ball, frisbee, chase, hide and seek!
This was a great video Andy. Simple dog behaviour can tell us so much, since they’re puppy. Jasper is so focused, so precise in all his movements. The eye contact is remarkable. You have done an extremely well job with your dog.
Great work.. The power of play with a dog is real and to me one of the most important things to do. My 15 month Rotty goes nuts when I bring to an open field off leash with an ecollar which I rarely use (just a back up for recall) i let her go ballistic playing with me with a ball and tug does laps but is engaged to me the entire time. She doesn't pay attention to anything else. It's amazing and definitely satisfies her big time play drive.
Hey Andy is there anyway to train your malinois to come to you with their toy as you showed without saying a certain command all the time? And if so could you show us how?
Nice.I need to get one of those bad boy tugs for my dog. I have incorporated a lot more play into our day recently. Definitely a cool idea. Gets him into me and engaging. Plus I get a good workout too.
Hi Andy... I love playing with my rottie! And do it pretty much like you do. I never thought about running backwards though, but that makes a lot of sense - new game tomorrow - thanks!!
I’ve got two rotties and they’re such big babies , best breed on earth( might be a little bias😂) we have our wrestling matches but they know the boundaries and that I’m the only one they wrestle with
Thanks for this. I think I have gotten seriously into training, but have skimped on playing. That will change now. That looks like a good tough toy. Can you refer me to that product?
Any chance of me achieving this if my 9month GSD interacts/plays with several other dogs at "day care" while I'm at work. I also have a 2year old GSD and they all go out in a groups of 5 ish others and fetch 2x a day. At home, I know im no competition, so other then hikes and down time the 2 are mostly separated and all training and play is individual. The 2 year old is fantastic. With the younger, I am really struggling building drive and engagement. I am conflicted on if im dealing with genetics and temperament or if this predominately a self created problem. Since no issues with my older female I think its mainly genetic and even if I had another option he would never have the drive. Unfortunately, while at work I don't have any other options. I know this is older but would really appreciate your advice. Thanks so much! Your energy and content is some of the best i have found.
I got myself a Dutch shepherd and I have been learning from you and a few other content creators on how to train and care for my pup... He's smart, really smart, the biggest challenge I am faced with is that my wife has a boxer shep mix that tends to get my dogs adhd better than I can, this was helpful. Thankyou
this has transformed our playtime with our girl - love the video Andy!! Can't wait to combine your new fetch video with this play style! So much fun, so much bonding 👏
Okay Andy no argument what you say about playing is correct but I got two "what abouts". Not all breeds of dogs are Malinois; what if you own a Pappion? Or a Chihuahua? Second "what about"; I'm 73 and have spinal stenosis. I can only wish I could run like you do. My favorites are heelers, Australian Cow Dogs. (Don't turn your back on em.)
Certainly different breeds have different styles/ preferences of play. If you aren’t able to be super physical during play, fetch or other games like that can come in handy 🙏🏼
Man, I have learned so much watching your videos in preparation to when I finally find a house I like with plenty of area for a dog to train and play with. Thank you for all these tips!
Hi Andy - A lot of people have asked where to purchase your cylinder bite roll, but I don't see any links or replies. I'd love to get one for my pup (the size and depth is perfect for our bite loving Mals) and cannot find them anywhere, including Etsy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. PS - You should carry it in your store!
Andy! Love your vids. Question, have you had any experience with bloat personally/client if so your thoughts on training a breed prone to it if training with food if not toy driven? 🙏
Thank you so much for your content! I have a 14 week old Belgian malinois/German shepherd mix. She is mouthy towards me, but it is a play bite. She does not do it towards strangers or anyone who she hasn’t been around. I don’t play rough with her. Should I be concerned? I will have her on a college campus and I need her to be very obedient. She has learned to sit, place, go to her kennel, and we are working on heel and retrieving. I think she will be a very good dog. Do you have any tips for this? Will she grow out of it?
Thanks for watching! This is what these breeds are bred to do. If you find yourself wanting to change the dog’s genetics, you may have the wrong dog for you! If I had a Malinois that didn’t bite, then I’d be concerned! 😆🙌🏻
Thanks a lot for this video! Love the approach of the play based on the genetics of the dog. One question please: Why you have his name as the "out" command? Is it a specific cause that it serves?
Incredible video! I couldn't discern while he is trotting after you but not biting the toy, is that part of the "Jasper" command, or did you set it by default that he follows that position until the GO command
My female GSD is nervous, I know you answered this already. That's just how most female GSD are, but could this type of play session boost confidence on a timid dog? As well is there a specific here on UA-cam or patreon that could show me a way for my GSD to have a full grip of her tug toy, bc she just uses her front teeth? Thank you for all the support!
My out video on UA-cam and Patreon (unedited) using a one year old female GSD will be a perfect guide for you. Even though it focuses on Out, it has many tugging tips in there that promote a good grip! It was posted within the last month 👍🏻
Hey Andy, Woohoo! Oh yeah 👍 Play = Engagement = Focus and Attention. Thanks for sharing another inspiring dog training video. 🙏 I have literally just started doing this (on day 3 or 3rd session) with our family 6-month old male GSD (Miko) using rope tug toy before I saw this video. I hope (being ambitious here) one day he can play as well as your Jasper even though I can only train him before and after work. I use the following commands: "Get It" to give permission to grab the toy "Give" to give back the toy (I think you use Jasper's name) "Finish" to end the session Still work in progress. But we are getting there. I heard you saying "chase". Is that what you use for him to chase you or the other way around? I thought it would be useful to have specific command rather than just run away (to be chased) and run towards him to do the opposite, which also works 😉
Great to see you again thanks for the Input: Please keep on growing bredda & if i am allowed to ask for something. Please give us another 5Min Challenge they are great =) And oh i see you got youre mic reset cheers
Andy, how do YOU deal with resource guarding? Should I take the object away to show I'm the boss or do tou think it has nothing to do with the hierarchy?
Andy, I have a question for you. My malinois is almost 5 months. I have a huge problem. We usually walk around without a leash and she always runs away in order to greet her friends. So I'm frustrated by that. My question is How do I handle this ¿
This is what you’ve taught her and allowed. Why be frustrated by something you’ve facilitated? What do you think should be implemented to begin to change this?
@@AndyKrueger well, I don't wanna put her on a leash all the time, but when I say No she reacts only for a split second. So maybe treats or something like that, what do u think? cause this is my first pup

Love this! Andy can you help us teach our puppy to go backwards with progressions and regressions?
Thanks! Use food and luring to teach backing up first. Fade the lure, then ultimately move to a toy. Should take a couple months 👍🏻

Thanks! You can either let the dog win the toy or out them and heel back to the kennel, depending where your dog is at in training 👍🏻
