AZERBAIJAN EUROVISION 2022 - REACTING TO ‘FADE TO BLACK’ BY NADIR RUSTAMLI (FIRST LISTEN)

  • Hi guys! Welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan. In todays video, I reacted to Azerbaijan’s song for ESC 2022, ‘Fade to Black’ by Nadir Rustamli.
After finishing towards the bottom half of the scoreboard last year, Azerbaijan have brought a song which I think will perhaps perform a bit better.
‘Fade to Black’ is a pleasant ballad packed with drama, passion and interesting musical ideas. The use of complex rhythms underpinned by a simple time signature produces a really nice tension and motivation for the song. The piano reinforces this idea with its support of the vocal lines and syncopated rhythms.
There is also a wonderful climax towards the end of the track where Nadir’s vocals push higher and higher in a very natural way to create this build up, supported by the percussion, strings and piano to create this overall crescendo. It’s fabulous.
The chorus melody has a nice ring to it and uses sequencing and repetition to really drive it home. It’s overall a great song, which I can’t fault to much.
May it get overshadowed by the less serious and more uptempo songs this year? Potentially, but that doesn’t matter to me as I really enjoyed it and think juries will give this love.

I swear he will end in the top 10. When you can climb the full scale like that with the amazing instrumentals in the back. That's a potential "Eurovision Moment" right there. Brividi is still my jam but this is definitely in my top 5, top 3 even. It reminds me of Gjon's Tears entry last year who represented Switzerland with "Tout L'univers" in the sense of the drums, the build up and that vocal climb.

Woohoo so excited for the big instrumental cover. Anyway, on the song, it is in my top 5 currently and as much as the fandom hates on it, you can't deny that the composition is clever and the man has an explosive voice. The mix of Balaban and, as you pointed out, the 1 2 3 rhytmic progressions in the chorus, does make this stands out enough to not be considered as another generic ballad. Love your insights so much cause I also felt like the chorus was interesting but cannot really pinpoint how and why. And then the build-up, whooo that drum kicks starting in makes you feel like it's a soundtrack to an epic movie or sth :)))

    • @ThePeaceAround
      @ThePeaceAround  2 роки тому +2

Yeah that last part with the drum kick and build up certainly don’t make this a ballad - it’s more of a mid tempo explosive track :)

@@ThePeaceAround I really agree as well, but I guess some people see the first half and label it a ballad and be done with it. Sigh, I don't even know how they define ballad when people complain that half of this year's songs are just ballad when it certainly isn't :)))

Eyy, you've done it!! Deffo staying tuned for what's next ^^
Azerbaijan - This is another one I find the fandom seem to be disliking just for the heck of it... I guess 'cause they kept us waiting and it's "ANOTHER BALLAD" (in a mimicky voice). I do enjoy it more the more I listen to it, I find the composition quite soundtrack-like. And the balaban fits in perfectly with it, doesn't seem shoehorned in as an "obligatory fan-pleasing ethnic element" (pretty sure that's a balaban, since we're talking Azerbaijan here).
My main gripe - Azerbaijan seem to think like Malta and to an extent Cyprus in terms of trying to figure out a formula of what MAY win in ESC, and they tend to go for a big multinational team to compose their songs, rather than trying to find local singer-songwriters or bands that do their own material (or at least have a larger say in it than a slight vocal/instrumental arrangement). It can produce good/competent songs (case in point "Fade to Black"), but it can also backfire, and does make them look like they have no faith in their own musicians. Or I'm just looking too far into it, idk...

Good video Rachel. I completely agree with you, this is a great song and probably would just make my top 5.
It’s unpredictable and toward the end it feels as though it’s going to go in a different direction to the one that it actually goes.
    I love the song though.
I do sometimes Lauravision who you recommended. I like her channel but, I find her to be biased sometimes.
When she made her top 10 qualifier predictions for the semi finals, she said she was dissociating what she wanted to qualify from what she thought would qualify, yet she didn’t fulfil this.
Everything she predicted would qualify was only what she liked.
And unfortunately I feel some discontent now because she has criticised Serbia, and it’s my favourite entry and I will defend it with all that I’ve got.
This is why I can no longer recommend her channel
