Learn how P-51 Mustang Helped Create the State of Israel, Part 1

  • As Israel declared independence, it had to create its own armed forces while being under a weapons embargo. Resourceful agents were able to outsmart governments of countries such as the USA and Britain and smuggle weapons to the former British protectorate. In August 1948, two P-51 Mustangs arrived on board of a freighter ship and soon became an asset in the Israeli Air Force. The service initially consisted of Jewish and non-Jewish volunteers and mercenaries from all over the World. These pilots would take the P-61 Mustang to the skies against their Arab adversaries. In part one, watch how Israeli Mustangs first met an enemy fighter and how they achieved the first aerial victory.

As far as I could find, historically the first Israeli Mustangs had bare-metal finish. One of those skins was available for purchase in the WT Marketplace and I did purchase it. That's the one you can see in the intro. Sadly, I couldn't make it work in the User Mission and so the Mustangs in the combat scenes have camouflage pattern which was used later. Custom skins for this aircraft were 'temporarily not available' for some reason.

US policy was probably influenced by the fact that the area of modern day Israel had been a part of the British Mandate (Trans-Jordan) into which they allowed Jewish immigration following the Balfour Declaration of 1919. In the aftermath of some violence from the local Arabs, the Jews created their own militia which eventually became the Haganah and ultimately a resistance movement against the British. The British also put caps on Jewish immigration after WW2 in response to the concerns of local Arabs but could not stem the tide of the incoming migrants and soon found themselves under attack by terrorist factions that eventually convinced the British to abandon their Mandate. For US officials to support the State of Israel from the outset would have entailed giving legitimacy to an uprising against their British allies within just two or three years after WW2 had finished. It was an awkward situation to say the least.

@@showtime112 As a former tour guide in Israel, I listen very attentively and can picture in my head every single place you mentioned. The coast of Israel has greenery and cities, the north has dense Oak forests. Believe me, I've been to all the bases mentioned and many you've never heard of. I've seen Ezer Weizman's black Spitfire being warmed up at the IAF Museum and crawled in a Panzer IV in a Jerusalem convent.... Maybe you should review your script for accuracy before matching it up to desert wastes with no ocean in sight. Many air battles took place over Gaza, btw...
