This song is about Henrik Ibsen's play 'The Doll House', one of the main characters is the wife/mother Dora. Dora is oppressed by having to live as her husband tells her to and is pushed to breaking point by being treated as a thing with no ambition or personality of her own, constantly expected to serve his purposes and be the perfect wife. But he can never truly have her because he never knows her. To him she is this fabricated idea of the perfect woman, in reality she is just numb.
@blueberryholiday I thinks it's about an abusive relationship, gender violence. The man sees her like his 'doll', and feels like her owner. In the end, I think he kills her ('Put his hand on my shirt, hand on my face, head to the wall and you've broken your only doll') because "what can he do with a girl if she refuses to be alive (since she doesn't want to be with him anymore)?" ... Sadly, it happens all the time. This song is sad, but beautiful. [Ehm... Sorry for my basic English!haha] :)
I think this song is about a woman who is a drug addict (poison in my veins). She has a man who loves her, but is abusive. She won't give herself wholly to him (what can I do with a girl who won't be mine?). When she gets home he is beating her, and throws her against a wall, killing her (now you've broken your only doll. And what can you do with a girl who won't be alive?) Btw, I do think the man loves her, and is trying to save her from drugs, but handles it the wrong way.
@GlassSlipperTears I'm not sure that's the meaning of the song, bud. I think it's about two people occupying the same residence who have differing romantic views for each other. it seemed to be so in the lyrics.

I have never loved a song so much. I'm working on a painting that is inspired 100% by this song.
