    Lyrics:
Steer your way past the ruins of the altar and the mall
Steer your way through the fables of creation and the fall
Steer your way past the palaces that rise above the rot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
Steer your heart past the truth that you believed in yesterday
Such as fundamental goodness and the wisdom of the way
Steer your heart, precious heart, past the women whom you bought
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
Steer your way through the pain that is far more real than you
That smashed the cosmic model, that blinded every view
And please don't make me go there, though there be a God or not
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
They whisper still, the ancient stones
    The blunted mountains weep
As he died to make men holy
Let us die to make things cheap
And say the mea culpa, which you probably forgot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
Steer your way, o my heart, though I have no right to ask
To the one who was never, never equal to the task
Who knows he's been convicted, who knows he will be shot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
They whisper still, the injured stones
    The blunted mountains weep
As he died to make men holy
Let us die to make things cheap
And say your mea culpa, which you gradually forgot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought

I met Leonard Cohen in 1996 at the Naam Restaurant in Vancouver. He sat with me to have tea. He was delightful. He introduced himself as "Leonard Cohens best friend." lol Very poetic. The reason he said he sat with me was because he said I looked like someone who would say interesting things. I said "Perhaps." He said "See." lol I was young and audacious. lol Or at least less vulnerable from ripening age. These days I would just say "Thank-you. He gave me his local address to come and visit him at home... and I lost the address. It was not meant to be. But he was charming and enigmatic... and simply personable and reflective. Prior to this I always listened to him in an art studio apartment in Gastown...and around that time in that era... he was the ambient muse of sound at many local art parties. Such a marvel of man and musician. Deeply honest and vulnerable.

Nice posting. You lost his address. In some way, it was meant for you to lose it and to hold this brief meeting at the crossroads to your heart.

English may not be your mother tongue but producing, in the context I wrote in the comment box, means
      ' Making music'
anyway, I'm sure he has as much input in the sound he makes as any other Artist!

    • @widM_
      @widM_ 7 років тому +2

I know. But production in music is everything. It defines the sound, so producer is having much credit for that. Especially for the singer-songwriter which is a poet first before anything else.

@Michael Freed HalleluYAH. How to give advice to somebody you never met? He knew i would come, but he was not sure he would see me. Thus he packed all his advice into songs that i would be able to pick up anywhere on the globe. 1917 Land Of YIsraEL restored 1967 Zion restored 2017 kingdom restored. ZechariYAH 12:7 יְהֹוָה also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David ( twitter.com/ya_hshua ) and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.... --->>> some of the songs were prophecy. Happens to the Heart released when "J" married the greek. "Go tell the young messiah what happens to the heart" But do not take my word for it. "Leonard Cohen Nevermind" Openbaring 22:21 Die Genade van onse ewige Vader immanuEL ( wat as dfit vertaal word beteken, ELoheem met ons) Die Gesalfde Prins Van Vrede sy met julle almal! Amen.

I sympathize deeply with you. But not everyone has the ability to have deep emotions. There are people who don’t feel that way. This is not a matter of choice. Their bodies work differently. They just don’t know what it’s like. Just as the blind can’t see the colors either.

My dad succumbed to dementia not too long after this album came out. He loved L.Cohen's music all my life, and was blessed with the opportunity to hear this album "for the first time" every time he listened to it during his last year on earth. In this way, even a passing as tragic as one with complications from dementia was somehow made better by Mr. Cohen's music!

Leo's glory reaches far beyond that of the nobel prize. Which is just another trivial measure of public acceptance. And in his words "As he dies to make men holy, let us die to make things cheap " says we mustn't make his prophetic voice subservient to a price. My words sounds irrational. But atleast they are spoken out.

My daughter Samantha loved lenard cohen, she died four years ago aged 38, she died of breast cancer, this was played at her funeral, she loved it so much, it's an amazing track but hurts so much everytime I hear it. Cohen was an amazing musical artist.

Amazing to read that he did this last album on his death bed with the assistance from his son. All the songs of this album reflect his fascination with death. His complete collections of songs, are reflection of his mind on love and the death of love. Your songs will live centuries past his life.

People ask where are our prophets in these our modern times? Where are all those who in biblical times pointed the way for all the rest? They're still here as they always are. They are manifested in the likes of a George Carlin, or a Leonard Cohen. They speak truth to us in a way that cuts thru the random chaos of our day to day. They make sense of the non-sensible.
It may be true that we are all vessels containing darkness. Lord knows there's a lot about today's world that makes sense of this logic. But our saving grace, as prophet Cohen has said, a grace that is a hallelujah moment for each and every one of us, is that our vessel is cracked, which allows the light to get in.
Go in peach Leonard Cohen. Our loss is Paradise' gain.

The prophets are written in the scriptures. Leonard Cohen knew that.

There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same
      There's a lullaby for suffering
      And a paradox to blame
But it's written in the scriptures
And it's not some idle claim
      You want it darker
      We kill the flame

    "Steer Your Way"
Steer your way past the ruins of the Altar and the Mall
Steer your way through the fables of Creation and The Fall
Steer your way past the Palaces that rise above the rot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
Steer your heart past the Truth that you believed in yesterday
Such as Fundamental Goodness and the Wisdom of the Way
Steer your heart, precious heart, past the women whom you bought
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
Steer your way through the pain that is far more real than you
That's smashed the Cosmic Model, that blinded every view
And please don't make me go there, though there be a God or not
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
They whisper still, the injured stones
    The blunted mountains weep
As he died to make men holy
Let us die to make things cheap
And say the Mea Culpa, which you probably forgot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
Steer your way, O my heart, though I have no right to ask
To the one who was never, never equal to the task
Who knows he's been convicted, who knows he will be shot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought
They whisper still, the injured stones
    The blunted mountains weep
As he died to make men holy
Let us die to make things cheap
And say the Mea Culpa, which you gradually forgot
Year by year, month by month, day by day
    Thought by thought

That we have to live in a world without Mr Cohen is not right. I first met his music in 1977, I was only 18 and it was an accidental meeting. I held on to his music, his words.....something of the man himself perhaps. There simply isn't another like him, for me his voice is the best of our times. To say that I shall I miss him does not express the sense of loss, but I am glad that I can share this loss with others. Ultimately, I am very grateful that he was at all, so unlike any other that I know; I miss him dreadfully.
