This is definitely growing on me. I can see why some listeners are disappointed, as this is not some traditional heart-breaking ballad, but its a very powerful piece, a natural show-opener and fits very well in her song catalogue. There's some skills involved in composing such a song and not making it boring. And the way she gets back to the main rhythm after the middle eight (around 2.18) is masterful. See what a talented songwriter can do with an overplayed riff!
I have had this song on my main playlist for about the last 9 years, and, without hyperbole, this is, in my opinion, the greatest folk song ever made and I refuse to accept otherwise.
I, personally, felt that it was Laura Marling who deserved the Mercury Music Prize of 2010 - she's an incredibly talented musician/artist and 'I Speak Because I Can' is without a doubt one of the best albums I've ever heard. Still, she's been nominated *twice* for that award - that - for me, counts more than a win at the end of the day :) I wish Laura Marling all the success in the world because she's so, so, sooo wonderful (and I don't say that lightly!). This song is just perfect.
Heard this song first at the end of THE INVITATION. People who turn off after the last picture miss this extraordinary piece of music. I added it at once to my playlist. A fascinating powerful voice, a brilliant composition and fine dark lyrics. A masterpiece. And to me the most inspiring voice since Melanie Safka and Loreena McKennitt.
This is exactly the kind of video I'd expect with this song. And for some reason, I felt like I had just fallen in love when the camera panned out to show her on the prairie with the drum at her side.
imagine how awesome it must be being laura marling. beautiful, amazing song writer and guitarist, gorgeous voice... plus she gets to travel all over to play gigs. this song is brilliant. i love it.
Wow, such a wonderful voice and beautiful music. I found out about her after discovering the one and only Mumford & Sons. Whom I love dearly and greatly admire. She is so talented, glad to see them working together!!!
like it first time of hearing, she is maturing into a strong songwriter and still the best new voice around. As they say in music circles a lovely timbre and and perfect vibrato. When the recognition comes it'll be nice to think I heard her way back when. Will stardom change you Laura? It bloody would me!
glad to know that still exist young and deeply true artist people like you.. one day we will change the world. again, like dylan & co. already did once. now it's fucked up again but that's the cycle of life, isn't it? cheers laura
Interesting song. Not quite my sort of music usually but I do like this - has quite an unusual celtic flavour IMO. Was also surprised to hear it as Fearne Cotton's Record of the Week on Radio 1 last week! It's about the last thing I'd expect to hear on daytime Radio 1 really, but certainly better than some of the bilge on the regular playlist!!! ;)
now thats what i call TALENT !! its refreshing to see someone that is ACTUALLY talented, unlike most of the music these days......lady gaga anyone ? or kei$ha
Yes just saw the movie The Invitation on Netflix so naturally I came here coz this was the ending song , now I'm into her music 😁
heh exactly same.

I've been a fan for many years. Go and enjoy her "old" music
Lol same. Never knew she existed until the credits of The Invitation. Still... very good stuff!
This song is too good, even all these years later. I love it.

MARCUS!!!!!
Laura and Marcus's voices mix so beautifully.
I love this type of music so much.
It's modern mountain music, and I agree, it's awesome
New Grass
folk
I consider it folk rock. Reminds me of Jethro Tull.
I have had this song on my main playlist for about the last 9 years, and, without hyperbole, this is, in my opinion, the greatest folk song ever made and I refuse to accept otherwise.
Why is she so breathtakingly astounding and beautiful?

The Invitation... Awesome Movie; Awesome lyrics... Awesome singer... ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have been listening to this over and over again for days (and the rest of her music for a lot longer than that). She is unbelievably talented.
This is my first introduction to Laura Marling. Now I wish I'd been paying attention earlier. Great stuff, and I've already pre-ordered the album.
How have you enjoyed the last ten years now that you have this music in your life?
@@somebloke3869 had some ups and downs but overall they were a good ten years. Thanks for asking!
This is exactly the kind of video I'd expect with this song.
And for some reason, I felt like I had just fallen in love when the camera panned out to show her on the prairie with the drum at her side.
Same for me. Just finished The Invitation. Great ending song!

This is absolutely BRILLIANT. And she's looking so good, I can't wait for her new album.
I love this song and its almost ritual atmosphere. The drums and guitar are amazing and her of coarse. "All of this can be broken"
like it first time of hearing, she is maturing into a strong songwriter and still the best new voice around. As they say in music circles a lovely timbre and and perfect vibrato. may you keep preaching the truth, Laura, the one and only Truth
