Good explanation... I own the Shure MV7 and the Rode Podmic USB... I bought them abroad and I didnt have the time to try them... They are both very hefty/heavy, but I'd return the Shure and now it's just too late (perhaps I can still do it begging on my next trip)... I got it in a combo with a Shure tripod. In terms of XLR or USB C- I have tried and other than different noise sensitivity, I can't tell the difference. From your video, I cant tell the difference either, but u have mentioned the noise is the only difference too, so I guess I wasnt wrong about it... at least for what I am using them now (narration). No dynamic mic will work well (USB C or XLR) for singing vocals... so now I have just started trying the Rode NT1-A to drive my neighbors crazy... I'm a total newbie to all this stuff so I am trying to educate myself. Thanks for this video!
Thats awesome to hear! As one other commenter mentioned, another difference may be in the headroom or how quickly the A/D converters max out when using the USB version. Usually high quality interfaces offer significantly more headroom. For most applications, especially spoken word, this probably would't be a concern, but something worth noting!
Reallly great review!!! Looking at the Izotop images was a great idea, super interesting. I wonder if higher priced mics would fair the same in the USB vs XLR. Really you're comparing the pre-amp and the A/D converters, so likely even higher priced mics arent going to have the quality of components of an intereface. I was wondering how the USB side would handle loudness peaks (IE, does it have a limiter built in before the A/D). Good tip about the cable! That dang RF!! Also Im also very surprised how much sound difference the foamie made on and off, and how terrible it is at it's only function WHILE hindering the sound. Overall seems like a great starter mic, its amazing how much quality and function you can get for a low price point :)
Yeah, totally right. I’d be curious to see that as well. May have to grab one of the higher budget ones to try. I’ve heard that even the proximity of the electronics can be a massive source of noise, especially in cheaper mics. Curious to try something from one of the big brands! Also yeah I should’ve checked the peaks. It must have some sort of auto-limiting feature in there. I’ve found usb mics to have quite poor headroom in the past I was surprised about the windscreen as well. I’ve (only this year) learned that there are custom companies like Shulze Brackel that make 3rd party, ‘acoustically transparent’ foamies. I had no clue it was an industry lol Thanks for sharing your thoughts buddy!
@randyrektor do u recommend this one or the fduce one. I heard a couple people complain of usb sound issues on the fduce. Not sure if that is true or not.
@SupremeJarJar I’d look into the Feelworld PM1 as well if you haven’t. Just did a review on that and it was stunning for the price. I’ve actually added it to my gaming setup because I liked it so much.
Interesting, as always. Layman's question... are different microphones better for recording higher voices vs. lower voices, or is the variation in human voices enough to make a noticeable difference in recording quality?
Honestly, I don’t think so. Like there’s definitely some subjectivity in the microphone you may prefer on high or low voices, for sure.. but all microphones are built to pick up ~50Hz to ~20KHz. In musical terms, that’s like 10 octaves of pitches. Generally male and female voices only fall about an octave apart in range, so they are WELL within the capabilities of any mic. That said there are definitely mics I prefer on females vs males, but it’s usually more to do with subtle tone qualities, not necessarily range if that makes sense
Listening now on better speakers .... XLR sounds a little deeper, richer, less etched, but the difference is not huge. Seems like this is a pattern for XLR vs USB, and consistent with your observations about noise. Question: Have you compared PM1 to Maono PD400x? It cost double the price of the PM1, but still not a real stretch .... The Maono is getting solid reviews in the price range $110 - $160. Thank you.
I think you’re totally on the money. I think with the USB option, you’re dealing with lower quality preamps and converters inside, but overall pretty reasonable for most applications! I haven’t tried the Maono, but I’ve used others from them and they are awesome for the money!
Sounds pretty good and I like the dual option for the price point. I might suggest when you put up the price you also put it in loonies too along with the US. 😎
Yup! I think I prefer the sound/build of this one. I found the Fifine to have terrible handling noise. Like even slightly moving my head would make the cable rattle the mic. I found it was almost unusable because of that.
Oh dang, charging for a little metal stand seems odd. Honestly, for $15 more, you could just get a proper mic stand and get it closer to your mouth 🤷♂️
Great review! Thank you for this information. It was extremely helpful.
You’re very welcome! :)

Oddly enough, it’s the same price in CAD on Amazon.ca. For once we come out on top 🙌🏻🇨🇦
@@randyrektor really!? 😳 That’s actually shocking, lol.
Might be a mistake.. lol
Same as FIFINE k688?
