Did I Just Contract HIV? Signs and Symptoms of HIV

- It's sometimes possible to recognize when you've recently contracted HIV from signs and symptoms such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes. This video will teach you how to recognize signs and symptoms of primary HIV infection that are experienced by between 40 and 90% of individuals after they are first infected with HIV. Primary HIV infection occurs during the first few weeks or months after a person first becomes infected with HIV. Symptoms include rash and/or fevers, possibly in combination with one or more of the following symptoms: malaise (which is a general feeling of weakness, discomfort, and fatigue), loss of appetite, weight loss, a sore throat, sores in the mouth, joint or muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, fatigue, night sweats, nausea and vomiting, headache, or genital sores. The symptoms usually last from seven to ten days, and rarely more than two weeks. There is an incubation period of a few days to a few weeks between when the person was exposed to HIV and when the symptoms begin. If you have any of these symptoms and think there's even the slightest chance you might have been exposed to HIV, such as through recent sexual activity or sharing a needle, even with someone who you believe is HIV negative, you should see a doctor and ask to be tested for HIV. When you go to the doctor with any of these symptoms, it's very important to mention any risk factors you may have for HIV so they could test you. If you have ever had unprotected sex, even once, have used injection drugs, or think you might be experiencing primary HIV infection, make sure to tell your doctor. Every night I pray to God that they may find a cure to this terrible disease.
When I got tested for the first time, when the doctor checked my blood pressure I was literally in the clouds. I made an excuse and told the doctor that high blood pressure runs in the family lol. I was so freakin' scared. But this is what I find that's funny about the ones who are nervous. We tend to link (google every symptom), and we have a few (due to anxiety/stress) and the ones that freak out are the ones who actually negative. Practice safe sex folks. Use a plastic bag if you have to. Lol
i know i gained alot of them symptoms after watching this.
good video.
There really needs to be a cure for this.
@bennardi17: Watch the following videos to learn the basics before you ask me any more questions: "Brief Introduction to HIV/AIDS," "Top Ten Myths About HIV/AIDS," and "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One." *Intact* skin on the outside of the body (e.g. on the hands) is normally a barrier to HIV transmission. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO MUCOUS MEMBRANES SUCH AS THE GENITALS OR MOUTH, OR BROKEN SKIN LIKE CUTS OR OPEN SORES.
Amen! I hope that one day everyone else gets their priorities straight in life like you!!!
By all means please spread the word. And if you know a language other than English, please consider volunteering to help translate! Thanks for your support!
If you're still having symptoms of illness, see a doctor and describe them. Consider seeing a different doctor than before and getting a second opinion. HIV tests are highly accurate, but perhaps you want to seek diagnosis of your symptoms in case they are due to a different condition. We will be publishing new videos soon about the accuracy of HIV tests. Stay tuned.
Hi
I was diagnosed as a HIV patient in April of 2008. I have been homeless now for 18 months. I am a cancer patient as well as a Sickle Cell patient. Fighting cancer is how I became homeless. Medical care is hard to come by for me and HIV has only added to my nightmare. If not for sights like this, I would never get good information. Thanks for the information on your channel. I am adding to my favorites and adding a link to my blog as well.
See our videos "What's the Risk I've Contracted HIV?" and "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One" for details.
See our video "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for details. As we explain there, antibody tests typically take up to 3 months from HIV infection to return a result of HIV+. However, if you think you're experiencing symptoms of primary HIV infection, you can ask for a PCR test, which looks for the presence of the virus itself in blood, and will confirm the presence of HIV 9-11 days after infection.
Watch our vids "Is HIV a Death Sentence?" and "The Top Ten Reasons to Take an HIV Test" and "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" to learn more. Either you are HIV+ or you are not. Knowledge empowers you to do the right thing either way. Don't worry or wonder. Just get tested and follow your doctor's instructions.
You understand this all very well. I think you would be an excellent HIV prevention educator.
@soniebaby1: See a doctor, get tested, and follow the doctor's instructions including for any follow-up testing. Watch our vid "What's the Risk I Contracted HIV?" for more info.
I'm waiting on my results still.
I have all of the above symptoms for 8+ months and my doctor's have evaluated every option except HIV. I'm praying to god I don't have it. I've had 5 sexual partner's in my lifetime and I fear I got it from one of my early partner's. People really don't realize how easy it is to get this disease. It's scary how many people are walking around today who practice promiscuity and un-safe sex... Just another statistic waiting to happen.
Watch our video "Introduction to HIV and AIDS: What You Need to Know" for the basics about HIV, what it is, and how it is transmitted.
Ask a doctor about what HIV testing schedule is right for you. See our video "Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for more info.
@linus614: Our video notes that not everyone experiences symptoms of primary HIV infection.
@xTheLaTiNx: Go to a doctor, describe your symptoms, and get tested for HIV while you're there. Follow the doctor's instructions including for any follow-up testing. Watch our vids "Is Being HIV Positive a Death Sentence?" and "Top Ten Reasons to Take an HIV Test." Don't stress in the meantime; just get tested and follow the doctor's instructions.
See our video "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for more details.
Watch our vid "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" to learn more about that including the relative certainty of a correct HIV negative test result after 3 months vs. 6 months.
The sources are documented on the slides in the video. See the wikipedia "HIV" article; it sums up the statistics with references concisely in a table.

You may not have antibodies to HIV in your blood during the "window period" even if you are infected with HIV and are experiencing symptoms of primary HIV infection. See our video "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for more information.
Go to the AIDSvideos web site and click the link at the bottom of the page labeled "Symptoms".
There is a distinction between recurring genital rashes, blisters, or sores (such as those caused by herpes) and the one-time rashes or ulcers (in the genital area or elsewhere) that can be signs of primary HIV infection. The information on this video is fully up to date. Symptoms CAN be very significant--don't ignore them, get tested if you have any risk factors and experience them! CDC *also* recommends that all adults be tested for HIV at a routine doctor visit regardless of risk factors.
Thanks for sharing! We aim to raise awareness about how risky and unsafe behavior can lead to HIV. This video provides a great overview of what to look for if you think you may have contracted it.

@ATIFKOKEB11: Ask your doctor about how to interpret the meaning of your HIV test result and whether you should take any follow-up tests. Watch our vid "Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" to learn more, including how likely to be correct an HIV- test result is at various lengths of time after a person's last possible exposure.
@smorgan1: As the video notes, some people don't get ANY symptoms during primary HIV infection. Unfortunately, no symptoms are universal during primary HIV infection, and many of the symptoms are similar to common viral infections like influenza. So it's easy to not realize that you're experiencing primary HIV infection. Bottom line: all adults should get tested for HIV. This is especially important if you have symptoms that might be primary HIV and might have recently been exposed to HIV.
Thanks for sharing this information.
Keep up the great work.
God Bless.
@raicaster: CDC recommends that all people age 13-64 be tested for HIV at a routine doctor's office visit. Remember that symptoms of primary HIV infection can be caused by many things OTHER than HIV as well, as the video says.
Just get tested people thats the best answer. Dont be afraid.
This was very helpfull.... thanks Dr.
question. do the symptoms come at once and last one week? or lets say a cold, two days of head ache, and 4 rashes on the tights?
shes a great doctor for helping those victims, how sad. I got tested 1 month ago, im negative.
@marlonmurrell: Watch the video again. It clearly answers that question. If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, you should get tested.
thankyou all for answering my question.
Sorry to hear you're having to go through that stressful period. Hang in there, be patient, and try not to worry in the meantime! (I know that's hard.) You're correct that this particular video doesn't mention the window period, but that's not an oversight. This video isn't about testing or seroconversion, just symptoms. See our vid "Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for info about the window period.
You're correct. As of November 2008, about 20-25% of Americans who are HIV+ do not know that they are HIV+. You're doing the right thing by getting tested!!!
@d0b1979: Since the duration of the incubation period can vary as can the duration and severity of Primary HIV symptoms, we don't want to suggest that Primary HIV infection can only occur in the "first few weeks" after infection and then have someone who experiences a symptom of Primary HIV infection 1 month and 1 day after exposure decide not to get tested because "it's a month after exposure, not a few weeks." We can't use overly restrictive language here. All adults should get tested.
Thank you veru much!
@DaveSketch: Only a doctor can diagnose HIV or other conditions. See a doctor. Describe your symptoms. Follow their instructions.
@2Warlock4You: On a dry surface, only for a very short time. If it's within bodily fluids (like wet blood), longer.
@DiamondsGlow87: They may not take any medications at all initially while their CD4 count remains high. Once their CD4 count falls below 550 or they get an opportunistic infection, they still may take as little as one pill a day (such as Atripla).
@theFULLEST That don't sound like it's HIV. If anything it's Hepatitis C. Half of the symptoms you named sounds like anxiety/stress related. Stress can also produce sweats, a rash (known as stress hives), and NO, HIV doesn't affect urine. Calm down, I was in the same situation. I had a few sweats here and there, stress hives, nausea, and headaches due to stress. Even though everybody's immune system is not the same but the symptoms you name falls into the stress category. But get test anyways.
@XxXmadchickenXxX: See a doctor, get tested for HIV, and follow their instructions.
Symptoms can absolutely suggest that you may be experiencing primary HIV infection. You don't know for sure of course until you have a confirmed-positive or confirmed-negative HIV test. But knowing the symptoms is important so you're more likely to take the step of getting tested if you experience them after a possible exposure. I know of cases where people correctly recognized the symptoms of primary HIV infection and immediately got tested, with an HIV+ result, as a result.
Thank you! Your videos are truly inspiring and i want to speard the word about your videos if you don't mind. :)
As noted in the video, a genital rash shortly after exposure to HIV can be a symptom of primary HIV infection. Of course, it can also be a symptom of other things; only a doctor can tell. Please see a doctor, have the rash examined, and be tested for HIV.
@MrAUFANATIC: Good job on overcoming your anxiety and getting tested! You are a model for others and you have considerable self-awareness as well!
@youngversatilewiga: See our video "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One."
Is it possible to get numerous symptoms individually over say, a span of 6 months or so? Because, i've had a lot of those in the last year or so.
I have a question. I have just recently developed chapped lips and a little rash around my mouth (mostly around the bottom lip). Also, seperate from the lips, my eye lid (particularly the left) swelled and it went away. The symptoms are usually most severe after I wake up. I think it might be allergies but I had unprotected sex about 10 months ago.
What are your thoughts?
Go the AIDSvideos site and click "FAQ" for the answer to this and other common questions. "Casual contact through closed-mouth or "social" kissing is not a risk for transmission of HIV." [CDC, "HIV and Its Transmission"]
@d0b1979: Go to the AIDSvideos web site and click "Symptoms." Your friend should get tested and follow the doctor's instructions including for any follow-up testing. CDC says all adults should be tested for HIV whether or not they think they are at risk and whether or not they have symptoms of infection. re: wording: in writing these videos, we have to be careful to err on the side of driving people to get tested, particularly where there's any individual variability or uncertainty.
@AIDSvideos how are you doing thanks for the video I have a question. when it come to kissing a person cause they say you get HIV orally but at one time the said you cant get it from kissing has that changed now as well?
I'm not a doctor and can't give you individual medical advice for your personal situation. Typically if you test HIV- six months after your last possible exposure, you're considered out of danger. You could call CDC National Prevention Information Network at 800-458-5231 for more info.
Is there any other common STDs which may have similar symptoms as primary HIV?
@chinesep1mp: Yes. It would be incredibly expensive to conduct a study starting with a large number of HIV- people, track them all over time, to correctly identify those who became HIV+ in a timely fashion, and to reliably determine the precise period of their primary HIV infection and whether they experienced symptoms. Therefore, we wind up with estimates that have a wide range.
Very interesting.
Thank you.
Answer: "Talk to your doctor and follow their advice about the number of kind of tests that's right for you." This is too complicated to answer in 500-character text comments. See articles at AVERT dot org, HIVInsite dot org, and CDC dot org for more background on testing.
Good video
What if you take a hiv test a month and a half later after you were active, it was negative but is their a slight change it could be a false negative?
what about in America, can i get tested here for free or i have to pay? what clinics you suggest to go to ( i dont care if they free or you have to pay), just need a good exam.
Thank you Eric
Thanks Eric. I met the doc, he said, any test wud be possible only after 2 months from the time of contact. My diahorrea is due to amoeba which was found of testing. I`ll have to wait for 2 months for this.
Thanks for your guidance and support.
This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. Make an appointment with a medical doctor and ask them what follow-up testing schedule is right for you personally. Only a doctor who examines you in person can give you personal medical advice that's right for you. As a layperson, my understanding is that people normally follow a PCR test with antibody tests later on to confirm HIV- status for sure. I don't know off the top of my head the estimated accuracy of initial PCR after a specific interval.
@ancientastronautt: There is a window period, but you don't have to wait 3 months to get tested. See a doctor & get tested & follow their instructions. Watch our vid "Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for more information about the window period.
Thanks for the video, very informative and helpful
can symptoms of primary infection start right after 24 hours from the exposure?
@thecommercialedge: This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. Remember that a person might contract HIV but not have their lymph nodes swell up (or show other symptoms) at all. I don't know what the average duration of swelling would be when they do swell.
@AIDSvideos is it possibly to get one of the symptoms just one day after infecting?
Hey I had a very risky exposure and got tested for it. It came out ngative in 3 months! I got tested again after 8 months from exposure. It came out negative as well. This test included blood work. Is it possible to still get Hiv after 8 months? People and some experts are saying it takes years for it to show but others experts denies that. Please help?
you said rash? What does it look like and how long does it last?
I have a question for you, almost two years ago I had this one customer come in and he had cut himself up pretty badly. I refused to serve him and urged him to seek medical attention. Can you contriact aids this way?
See a doctor. Describe your symptoms and get tested for HIV. Watch our vid "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One" for statistics about the risk of different sexual practices.
i have lost my appetite 2 days ago...could i have hiv?
please help me. i had unprotected few weeks ago and recently i notice some red rash on my tight, i know rash can very on color of skin and so on, does HIV rash comes out one or two at the time? how long does it last? i have these two rashes on my tight for few days now, but i dont feel any other symptoms, does rash come out all spread or is it like the ones i have one or two? or does it come in a great portion of the body?
Many of the symptoms of primary HIV infection are nonspecific, i.e. similar to symptoms of other more-common conditions like cold, influenza, etc. That's part of why it's easy even for medical doctors to fail to correctly diagnose primary HIV infection when patients present in the office, which is in turn part of why CDC recommends that every person be tested for HIV during a routine doctor's office visit.
Watch our video "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One." See also wikipedia article on HIV. Get tested.
@dd8721: That's why the video says: "If you have one or more of these symptoms, does it necessarily mean you are infected with HIV? No. Many common diseases can cause one or more of these symptoms. For example, most people with a fever or sore throat are probably just experiencing common illnesses such as the cold, influenza, or mononucleosis. So don’t panic. But .... see a doctor and ask to be tested for HIV."
i have a question. I had a risk situation. I suffer a rash on my leg 54 days after, so i started to pannic. I got negative on an antibody test on the 68 day. What are my chances. Please answer to me if the 68 days almost 10 weeks for antibody test is acurate, or how accurate is it?
See our video "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for information about the increasing probability of correctness of "HIV negative" test results as time since last exposure increases from 0 to 6 months.
See my comments policy at AIDSvideos dot org on the "Comments Policy" page. I'm not trying to whitewash the world and create a false appearance that ignorance, denialism, and racism exist. Therefore, I sometimes allow through comments in all such categories to let people see the world as it really is--and then refute them and give others the chance to do the same.
@TheMeljanCABALE Hang in there. HIV is no longer a death sentence like it was in the past and you can still live a long and happy life. You're definitely not alone in this world. I can't possibly understand what you're going through but this is what I try to tell myself when I think about the worst. I'm 20, currently waiting to take my 2nd test (6 weeks). Trying to be strong but the worry/suspense makes it tough at times.
Is it possible that it goes 2 years without any frequent fever? No fever at all actually?
The video response to this video addresses the window period.
Hang in there. Get your results, follow all of your doctor's instructions (including for any follow-up testing), and don't stress in the meantime. Good luck!
I will pray for you! Get tested, follow your doctor's instructions, use protection if you're sexually active going forward, and don't stress out while you're waiting for the hopeful final "all clear" from your doctor.
See our video "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One" for estimates of risk of different practices.
In the United States, any public health clinic will offer free HIV testing. Plus, if you turn out to be HIV+, you'd be eligible for free health care under the Ryan White care act (although it's not fully funded so there are waiting lists in some places). Get tested and good luck!
@AIDSvideos I didn't know that some people have a natural resistance to HIV? when it come to symptoms do they generally come one at a time two at a time and time span from one to another like skin rash this next week sore in the mouth kinda thing.
@bennardi17: No. There's also: mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth and nursing; needle sticks at the workplace (e.g. doctors and nurses getting stuck with a needle accidentally after using it on an HIV+ person); a TINY risk through blood transfusion in the developed world, where blood is tested, and a much larger risk in the developing world; etc.
@AIDSvideos Can hiv pass through cracked skin or broken skin.
Their was no bleeding as the broken skin is not a fresh cut.
But i touched a bit of some one else saliva with my broken skin finger.
Help please.
Did not see visible blood in saliva.
@noelmaster1: So bone marrow transplant from an HIV-resistant donor can only be done for patients who, like Timothy Ray Brown, have ANOTHER condition besides HIV (in his case, advanced leukemia) whose risk of death is greater than 30%. So bone marrow transplant is unfortunately not a viable cure for people who only have HIV.
This is Eric; I'm not a doctor; no one can tell you over the Internet whether you've been infected with HIV or what the risk is. See a doctor, get tested for HIV, and try not to stress out too much in the meantime. Watch our video "What's the risk that I have contracted HIV?" for more information.
Magic Johnson was not "cured." He remains HIV+ today. He's just stayed healthy because he's taken good care of his general health and has followed his doctor's instructions.
