Hi, I know you posted this a long time ago, but I wanted to show you some love and commend your bravery. My uncle has had AIDS since the 90s. He nearly died of pneumonia and that's how we found out. He was rather young then, but went on to get successful treatment, get married, and have beautiful twin daughters. His wife and children do not carry the virus. 30 years later, he's in great health, and actually survived his sibling (my mom) who did not have the illness. You are so much more than a diagnosis and it does not define you. May you have a long, healthy, and most importantly HAPPY life ❤

My Best Friend got HIV in 94. We went through studies and he was on drug cocktails and people in his family were afraid of him which was heartbreaking. You were not born yet. I just said the other day, we rarely here about HIV like we used too. I feel proud that I got such an education with him as he was my roommate. The good thing, he's still alive. Drugs have come far and you did a great job.

I'm a veteran: one of the very few to survive when I was diagnosed in 84. I can't even begin to tell you about how it was from the carnage, to the rejection, projection and of course stigmatisation. But now when I look back I realise that the ones who still wanted to be with me when I told them, passed a test that is rarely presented to most couples. You knew they really loved you! So what I'm saying is that you have a secret tool in your box when it comes to choosing the right partner and people in your life: you find out pretty quickly who the good ones are. Lots of love to you. You will be fine and in your lifetime, I would imagine they will find the cure.

Thanks for sharing. I was born with HIV in 92. My mom got infected by dad. She didn’t know she had it until I was born. In Africa, there was no way of knowing about the disease till after a child was born. Although there’s still a lot of stigma, the disease shouldn’t define who we are.

Thank you for sharing your story. My ex boyfriend was diagnosed with AIDS (his CD4 count was down to 25) while we were dating. He didn’t even know he was sick until he ended up in the hospital with PCP pneumonia. By the grace of God I wasn’t infected. Thankfully he’s been able to get himself to be undetectable now, but still suffers with a lot of health problems because he was so sick. I wish people would become more educated about how far treatments have come now - especially with not being able to transmit it now even without contraceptives. Thanks for sharing that detail.

Maybe he has to talk to his doctor to have those changed, since every individual is unique they may have different reactions. There are other medications for the same thing and maybe among those he can find one that works better for him.

Even if you are undetectable you must ALWAYS have protected sex. Just because you were ubdetectable DOES NOT mean you will stay that way, even on medications. Please use protection.
I am NOT disagreeing with that statement. I said you never know when your VL is NOT undetectable. I am a nurse in South Africa - we have the highest HIV burden in the world. Many clients spread the virus thinking they were undetectable because of previous blood results when, in fact, they weren't. Maybe they skipped a dose or whatever, but point is just because you are undetectable today doesn't guarantee it forever. That is all I meant to say.
I just want to say you are so strong. I have had a hiv scare and it was one of the most traumatizing experience. Once I had that scare I have a whole new perspective on stds and Sti’s even tho I never acc had it I just convinced my self I had it after being r worded. Now I look at stuff like that and realize it could happen to anyone and whether u intend to sleep around it’s no one deserves to experience to fear and anxiety and trauma of being diagnosed or feeling like u could have it. That taught me a huge lesson to never judge anyone or stigmatize anyone ever again. And the fact that u have it and u are educating others and ur so brave to make a video like this is truly inspiring. I’m heartbroken for u that u ever had to go any sort of physical health or mental health journey like this. I just got a positive diagnosis this afternoon...literally feel like my heart got ripped out of my chest and the scariest part is yet to come as I have to tell my wife and just hope she doesn't leave me. I have to admit I was part of the stigma crew and now it's all come back around and I'm trying to find other people that have been where I am right now. It's currently 2am and I am so wide awake, thoughts swirling around, having all the stages of grief in 10min bursts and overwhelming anxiety of the outcome of the inevitable talk with my absolute soul mate and admit I made a massive mistake and totally broke the promise I made to her. Thanks for sharing your story that was super brave and has given me a little hope that I can do the same. I feel so ashamed but mostly because I've broken the trust and my karma is the 1 thing I feared the most.

@nickc5374 absolutely!! Although I fear how she will take the news I just have to suck it up and find out I guess. I'm one of the lucky ones as my parents and I are very close and they have been super supportive, Mum used to be a counselor and give hiv talks to schools. Finding a lot of support from these channels and maybe 1 day I may pluck up the courage to tell my story when my U=U result comes in and I've found out how my wife is and whether or not she will stick by me.

Every day we are nearing the day when the cure will be discovered. Keep the faith and pray for it. So brave thank you for sharing ! I think it’s so unfair the stigma around HIV still like I really believe it should be taught more in secondary schools so people are aware more on safe sex but also what HIV is and hopefully it can remove some of the untrue facts and stigma that comes with it.
Catherine, no the stigma is not unfair. It is a terrifying disease. To know that you are dependent on a pill to keep you from suffering a horrific death, is terrifying. When I look back, I could have contracted this disease. I had a few questionable partners. So, I am not judging. But, I am glad that there is a stigma. Without that, we would have alot more infected. It breaks my heart, that this young woman, at the tender age of 25, is infected. But, it goes to show you, that regardless of all the information out there, it isn't enough.

The origins of it as a homosexual disease comes from how statistically for a long time it spread rapidly throughout those communities due to their high promiscuity and drug use. In the US, blacks and Hispanics by have the highest rates of infection, and people would use HIV as an excuse to be ignorant too. I had NO IDEA that they had essentially a morning after type pill for HIV! That's so cool! More and more of these videos are popping up for me and it's been super educational and made me realize a lot about it and our general population
It’s not a easy round of medication though. It’s brutal. I was offered it after an incident at a dental clinic. The doctor who recommended it to me said it was a series of medication (I think for a few weeks? I can’t remember) and it makes you so sick that this doctor said he never seen a person actually finish the full series of medication because everyone he’s ever prescribed it to quit taking it before they finished the full series because they were so sick. Thankfully, I ended up not taking it, so I don’t have personal experience with it though.
Hi, it is an easy round of medication. It’s effectively the same meds someone living with HIV takes everyday so most people do succeed in a full round of it. There’s some side effects but it’s the same side effects every person living with HIV on medication has been through or been at risk to in the past. Definitely not something I’d class as hard to take

Ive been positive for 16 years, never had AIDS, my cd4 was 590 when I started treatment, my viral load was 122 thousand at diagnosis and started back then as soon as possible with the meds. Im on Dovato and for the people they dont know about this med, i dont have any side effects of it. I only can tell my first cART was terrible and the Genvoya I didnt had any side effects so dont be scared for the meds. Prep you arent protected against drug resistance hiv strains. I had many friends who died of AIDS in the 90's and I HATE videos like this.....I know she's not glamorizing the disease but HIV is not something you want....the drugs work until they don't...period. She's kind of giving off a "no big deal now" vibe that is just dangerous. I miss my friends. Young people...please....having unprotected sex isn't worth it.
Just to confirm the drugs do not stop working for a period of time. They can work for the rest of your life when taken correctly. It isn’t a big deal, as long as people get tested, know their status and have access to medication there’s no reason it should be a big deal

Have you seen Jennifer Vaughan’s channel? Women like you; white, heterosexual, I assume straight and non drug using, with HIV are almost anomaly in the HIV community. You’ll make people realise you don’t have to be gay, on drugs or black to get it. I took a HIV test last year and it came back negative, henceforth I’m aiming to not have sex again until I’m married

Well done for been open about this matter it all helps reduce stigma. Fortunately I don’t have this but, with modern treatments I must admit it doesn’t seem like a very big deal, considering that it was a death sentence in the 80s and most of the 90s too. But with todays modern treatments it doesn’t seem like something that needs worrying about. And it’s good that you aren’t ashamed to just come out and talk about it. Thanks for your video, Ellie. I recently had my annual physical. Last year, they just had one of the office staff ring me and tell me to take some vitamin D supplements. But this year they’re calling me back for a “follow up.” Since I have no idea what the doctor wants to tell me, I’ve had to prepare myself for the worst possible outcomes. I mean, if I need treatment, it’s not the doctor’s fault whatever the illness is. And if I only have 30 days to live, then at least I could get my affairs in order. Maybe take a vacation or something.

He was rather young then, but went on to get successful treatment, get married, and have beautiful twin daughters. His wife and children do not carry the virus. 30 years later, he's in great health, and actually survived his sibling (my mom) who did not have the illness. Thank you for sharing your story. My ex boyfriend was diagnosed with AIDS (his CD4 count was down to 25) while we were dating. He didn’t even know he was sick until he ended up in the hospital with PCP pneumonia. By the grace of God I wasn’t infected. Thankfully he’s been able to get himself to be undetectable now, but still suffers with a lot of health problems because he was so sick. I wish people would become more educated about how far treatments have come now - especially with not being able to transmit it now even without contraceptives. Thanks for sharing that detail.

The medications don’t agree with everyone. It sucks.
Maybe he has to talk to his doctor to have those changed, since every individual is unique they may have different reactions. There are other medications for the same thing and maybe among those he can find one that works better for him.

Even if you are undetectable you must ALWAYS have protected sex. Just because you were ubdetectable DOES NOT mean you will stay that way, even on medications. Please use protection.
This is entirely inaccurate, With an undetectable viral load there is 0 risk of transmission through bodily fluids.
I am NOT disagreeing with that statement. I said you never know when your VL is NOT undetectable. I am a nurse in South Africa - we have the highest HIV burden in the world. Many clients spread the virus thinking they were undetectable because of previous blood results when, in fact, they weren't. Maybe they skipped a dose or whatever, but point is just because you are undetectable today doesn't guarantee it forever. That is all I meant to say.
I just want to say you are so strong. I have had a hiv scare and it was one of the most traumatizing experience.
Once I had that scare I have a whole new perspective on stds and Sti’s even tho I never acc had it I just convinced my self I had it after being r worded.
Now I look at stuff like that and realize it could happen to anyone and whether u intend to sleep around it’s no one deserves to experience to fear and anxiety and trauma of being diagnosed or feeling like u could have it. That taught me a huge lesson to never judge anyone or stigmatize anyone ever again. And the fact that u have it and u are educating others and ur so brave to make a video like this is truly inspiring. I’m heartbroken for u that u ever had to go any sort of physical health or mental health journey like this. I just got a positive diagnosis this afternoon...literally feel like my heart got ripped out of my chest and the scariest part is yet to come as I have to tell my wife and just hope she doesn't leave me.
I have to admit I was part of the stigma crew and now it's all come back around and I'm trying to find other people that have been where I am right now.
It's currently 2am and I am so wide awake, thoughts swirling around, having all the stages of grief in 10min bursts and overwhelming anxiety of the outcome of the inevitable talk with my absolute soul mate and admit I made a massive mistake and totally broke the promise I made to her.
Thanks for sharing your story that was super brave and has given me a little hope that I can do the same. I feel so ashamed but mostly because I've broken the trust and my karma is the 1 thing I feared the most.

I'm one of the lucky ones as my parents and I are very close and they have been super supportive, Mum used to be a counselor and give hiv talks to schools.
Finding a lot of support from these channels and maybe 1 day I may pluck up the courage to tell my story when my U=U result comes in and I've found out how my wife is and whether or not she will stick by me.

Catherine, no the stigma is not unfair. It is a terrifying disease. To know that you are dependent on a pill to keep you from suffering a horrific death, is terrifying. When I look back, I could have contracted this disease. I had a few questionable partners. So, I am not judging. But, I am glad that there is a stigma. Without that, we would have alot more infected. It breaks my heart, that this young woman, at the tender age of 25, is infected. But, it goes to show you, that regardless of all the information out there, it isn't enough.

I was a kid in the 80s as HIV was an emerging concern. A lot of what you describe as the stereotypes of it goes back to those speculations at the time. At a time when route of spread was unknown, Anthony Fauci of all people, famous for his COVID pandemic involvement, said close contact with AIDS/HIV patients could infect you. Some of my classmates would spread different rumors about who may have had aids in class and don’t do this or that or you’ll get it just to be mean to people, even as info came out about how it was really spreading. The origins of it as a homosexual disease comes from how statistically for a long time it spread rapidly throughout those communities due to their high promiscuity and drug use. In the US, blacks and Hispanics by have the highest rates of infection, and people would use HIV as an excuse to be ignorant too. I hope you have long and successful life and thank you for sharing your story.

@@ellieharrison6905if you skip the pill for a few days, the suppressed virus can reach your blood and thus the blood of a partner. It's safer to sleep with someone who checks their status, but it isn't safer to sleep with a known positive person than a negative person who also gets tested.

I had NO IDEA that they had essentially a morning after type pill for HIV! That's so cool! More and more of these videos are popping up for me and it's been super educational and made me realize a lot about it and our general population
It’s not a easy round of medication though. It’s brutal. I was offered it after an incident at a dental clinic. The doctor who recommended it to me said it was a series of medication (I think for a few weeks? I can’t remember) and it makes you so sick that this doctor said he never seen a person actually finish the full series of medication because everyone he’s ever prescribed it to quit taking it before they finished the full series because they were so sick. Thankfully, I ended up not taking it, so I don’t have personal experience with it though.

Hi, it is an easy round of medication. It’s effectively the same meds someone living with HIV takes everyday so most people do succeed in a full round of it. There’s some side effects but it’s the same side effects every person living with HIV on medication has been through or been at risk to in the past. Definitely not something I’d class as hard to take

Ive been positive for 16 years, never had AIDS, my cd4 was 590 when I started treatment, my viral load was 122 thousand at diagnosis and started back then as soon as possible with the meds. Im on Dovato and for the people they dont know about this med, i dont have any side effects of it. I only can tell my first cART was terrible and the Genvoya I didnt had any side effects so dont be scared for the meds.
Prep you arent protected against drug resistance hiv strains. Over here in the studie group 8500 people got hiv and with these resistance strains

I had many friends who died of AIDS in the 90's and I HATE videos like this.....I know she's not glamorizing the disease but HIV is not something you want....the drugs work until they don't...period. She's kind of giving off a "no big deal now" vibe that is just dangerous. I miss my friends. Young people...please....having unprotected sex isn't worth it.

Just to confirm the drugs do not stop working for a period of time. They can work for the rest of your life when taken correctly. It isn’t a big deal, as long as people get tested, know their status and have access to medication there’s no reason it should be a big deal

Have you seen Jennifer Vaughan’s channel? Women like you; white, heterosexual, I assume straight and non drug using, with HIV are almost anomaly in the HIV community. You’ll make people realise you don’t have to be gay, on drugs or black to get it. I took a HIV test last year and it came back negative, henceforth I’m aiming to not have sex again until I’m married

Well done for been open about this matter it all helps reduce stigma. Fortunately I don’t have this but, with modern treatments I must admit it doesn’t seem like a very big deal, considering that it was a death sentence in the 80s and most of the 90s too. But with todays modern treatments it doesn’t seem like something that needs worrying about. And it’s good that you aren’t ashamed to just come out and talk about it. You’re a pretty girl, be proud of who you are❤

Thanks for your video, Ellie. I recently had my annual physical. Last year, they just had one of the office staff ring me and tell me to take some vitamin D supplements. But this year they’re calling me back for a “follow up.”
Since I have no idea what the doctor wants to tell me, I’ve had to prepare myself for the worst possible outcomes.
I mean, if I need treatment, it’s not the doctor’s fault whatever the illness is. And if I only have 30 days to live, then at least I could get my affairs in order. Maybe take a vacation or something.
