@@Dalton_Boardman2000 Rocko's Modern Life had a similar dynamic, which is understandable when you realised Stephen Hillenburg was also the producer on that show before Spongebob

Sandy and Patrick only work together for Spongebob, but Sandy snarks at Patrick a lot in the episode and shows that she isnt actually friends with him but just coincidentally working with him for the same goal. To help Spongebob. It feels very sitcom-y too. A lot of the time she is only interacting with Patrick because he is usually with Spongebob. Squidward and Patrick are similar as well, where they only interact because he is usually with Spongebob, and his neighbor, but outside of that, they never interact without Spongebob at the center of them. Or how Patrick and Mr. Krabs rarely ever interact but Mr. Krabs knows who he is. Its definitely hard to explain, why old Patrick worked and why new Patrick doesn't. I think its due to the rule of 3, where a joke has to establish, tone, context and an ironic punchline for it to be funny. While later Spongebob just doesn't really do that, and goes for the immediate "loudness = funny" belief. Its what they fail to do with modern Patrick, yet still nail with Mr. Krabs and Squidward, who are always funny.
Reminds me a lot of Simpsons. SpongeBob has run for so long the characters have become mostly caricature of their most notorious qualities. Homer was slow in the early seasons but was sensitive about it and tried his best despite his shortcomings. Similar to how Patrick wasn't smart but he tried to support his friend in helpful ways sometimes showing that when he's around people who believe in him like SpongeBob he can be helpful. Now he's just stupid turned up to 10.
I think "Karate Star" (Season 7, Episode 19) is another good example for phase 5, similar to "Rule of Dumb" where Patrick can't handle the responsibility of learning karate, eventually getting out of hand and destroying the city. Makes me think of the final scene of the episode where he takes his hand off and that hand generates a new body, also similar to how he replaces his head in SmartyPants. There might be more to his character than it seems, could be related. Great video btw

I'm sure you skipped some episodes to avoid the headache, but it's obvious that it needs to be brought up. The episode "Yours, Mine, and Mine" shows Patrick at his absolute worst. To me, this was the episode that showed me not only Patrick's stupidity but his selfishness. The title alone would be a red flag to what you would see. We see Patrick buying a kiddy meal and because he's a broke piece of crap, SpongeBob out of kindness buys the kiddy meal in order to "share it" with Patrick. After taking SpongeBob's money and paying for it, he eats the whole meal without considering SpongeBob. After he throws a bitch fit over not getting a toy with the meal, and after SpongeBob pays for the toy, he becomes antagonistic and demands to take the toy because it's the concept of "sharing" that SpongeBob was talking about earlier. After an annoying length of both characters wanting the toy because Patrick is selfish enough to keep it for himself, he eats the toy declaring, "If I can't have it, no one can." It doesn't end there, after Mr. Krabs makes the first "toy", he makes a lot more toys and offers one each to SpongeBob and Patrick, charging them a ridiculous amount and Patrick takes SpongeBob's wallet. SpongeBob calls him out, saying that it was his wallet he was using to pay for another thing for himself, and Patrick responds, "Have you learned nothing about sharing?" This episode was what made me HATE Patrick, and it's still that way to this day from every episode since then. From his jerky/selfish moments to brain-dead stupidity, the one thing that solidified my loathe towards Patrick was the episode, "SpongeBob, You're Fired". He didn't play a big part in the episode, but one line made me so disgusted with Patrick that it's never recovered. After SpongeBob gets fired so Mr. Krabs can save a nickel, he is obviously sent into depression at losing his job. Patrick tries to be supportive, but this one line cemented my hatred for Patrick forever. The next day after telling Patrick that he got fired, he says, "Hey, buddy! Are you ready? Ready for your first day of glorious unemployment? Or as I like to call it 'fun-employment'." When he called unemployment "fun-employment", I never had a stronger urge to kill a character more at that moment in time. As someone who had been unemployed for four years, there was NOTHING fun about being unemployed. Yeah, you don't get to worry about job responsibilities and you get money while you look for work, but unemployment funds run out, they don't last forever. So to hear that line while I was unemployed, and the unemployment money was dried out, it pissed me off big time. I could go on a bigger rant about this, but it would go a lot longer if I did. The ScumBob era was when Patrick was at his worst, the two episodes I mentioned are prime examples of it.
I saw a comment once that described Patrick in the earlier seasons as dim but not brain dead. He didn't have much to do throughout the day, so he doesn't really exercise his brain all that often. He did however have his moments of wisdom, in addition to some funny dumb moments. The one example I remember from the comment of him being dumb but not completely moronic was Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost. Patrick did basically exactly what he was asked to, bringing fruit to Squidward, he just went about it in a rather silly manner, dropping a whole watermelon on Squidward. Technically, he's still doing what he was told, just doing it wrong. Modern Patrick would somehow fumble it so bad you'd wonder if he actually heard what he was told to do.
To me, i think there's a tell with the kind of episode you'll get. If you see frames where Patrick is displaying huge dimpled cheeks, accompanied with a single-(baby)toothed overbite, - you're in for a bad time.
Maybe the "That's not my wallet" was a play from patrick to see if Mantaray (Is this the Original name?) stays friendly or if he becomes evil again. :D
You forgot a episode for like one of the phases where he’s a jerk I don’t know what it’s called but it’s weird. Patrick gets a crabby patty toy and doesn’t share it.
I'll just put it out there. Patrick seriously needs to get a doctor. the showing of his deteriorating personality is actually sad to see. Chances are he might have some neurological condition that worsens overtime. actually... he already had the chance to find a doctor... and now he is barley functional, or not at all functional. when putting this in a medical sense, it's almost as scary as Alzheimer's disease.
The jerkass Patrick arc. What I liked about his character was how well-meaning he truly was. How much SpongeBob looked up to him as his best friend without knowing he was just as - if not more - naive as/than him. Sad to see how he's been Flanderized to the point of being braindead
I disagree with season 9-10, it was the time where Stephen Hillenburg came back, and Patrick honestly got better. He has funny moments in Sold, where he said "He gonna learn how to learn", or the line MY PERSONALITY, Pull up a Barrel. And they were episodes where he was his original personality, in What's Eating Patrick, he participated to an eating competition to make a little kid happy. In the Whole Tooth, he's scared to go to the dentist to get his tooth removed, AND IT'S RELATABLE. And the episode Mimic Madness where he has funny moments. I think it's later in season 11-onward, and the PSS where they ruined him and made him dumber
Patrick throughout the entirety of the first few seasons is so lovable because he is oblivious, but he’s also genuine. In later seasons, Patrick has neither of these traits. He’s just stupid to be stupid, and not for the sake of a joke. His character has been watered down and “flanderized” in order to be recognizable to modern audiences.
I was noisily eating Doritos and goldfish crackers throughout this video, so I didn't actually hear most of what you said, but since I've been binge-watching character analysis videos about _SpongeBob SquarePants,_ I'm going to assume your video made valid points.
I also would’ve brought up the episode “stuck in the ringer” as it shows off both his stupidity and selfishness as well as the rest of the town’s stupidity at the end of the episode when SpongeBob finally snaps on Patrick for pretty much ruining his life and the rest of the towns people gets mad at SpongeBob for it.
It is interesting that Nick wanted to de-age Spongebob, and they kind of de-aged Patrick instead. Though it may have seemed a bit weird the 'kid' character hung out with what felt like a 40ish year old man who would sit around drinking beer at home all day. He instead seems to have ended up being that annoying kid in the class no one liked. The literal baby tooth kind of seals it.
About the episode "Driven to Tears" where Patrick got a boat and driving license, can only vaguely rememebr it but for me, It was SpongeBob that was being the main antagonist there. SpongeBob couldn't be happy for Patrick, he grew jealous, he then even proceeded to sabotage Patrick. Patrick on the other was mainly enjoying himself and even tried to share his joy with SpongeBob. Between, the two of them there, yeah. Granted that's from what I can vaguely recall anyways. SpongeBob isn't exactly a good fellow all the time either, if anything, he tends to be a menace to many under the guise of a happy go lucky and nice fellow. Well, That's my take on that bit anyways. Interesting vod, though kinda got lost towards the end since there were so many phases that were just relapses really that it just seemed like bloat content.
the first spongebob movie was the last time I watched Spongebob, I knew that if they continued they'd run the show into the ground and that's exactly what they did.
Patrick was stupid and oblivious but not outright mentally challenged. And he was still, very much supportive and a good friend. He might not know much but he will do everything he can to help SpongeBob
What if Patrick is actually self aware and became mentally insane cause he knows he is in a simulation, his intelligence makes him mean to other characters cause, why do you want to act a part of a false reality? At some point you want to escape, but the Observers watching forced Patrick to remove his intelligence but in cost he is insane. Just a theory
One episode you kind of forgot to mention is The Card. In that episode, he reveals that he purposefully acts stupid to keep SpongeBob on his toes. Also, you would think him being a huge Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy fan that he would cherish those holographic cards and want to keep them in good condition.
I like this video, it’s a great analysis I think there’s a few improvements you can make to structuring your video like being more concise labeling the phases. Anyways I super enjoyed it.
there's one sb episode that i din't exactly watch but the plot summary basically explains a lot about patrick, there's an episode called "the nitwitting" which is basically patrick introducing spongebob to a club(in the episode they call it "society") of actual dimwitted sea creatures who enjoy torturing the town, actually look ugly and drool a lot. this not only shows that patrick is actually 100% fully onboard with the idea of being an idiot, but it also shows that nick executives want him to become full blown mentally disabled(the episode showed harmful sped kid stereotypes).

It had to be, because Spongebob just ignores that Patrick was what caused Man-ray to get mad.
It’s also a well-engineered joke.
Man-Ray
Patrick is a homeowner with good friends in town. That's not that bad nowadays
When Patrick gets mad it kinda scares me lol I feel like he has the potential to freak out
What an amazing video by such a small creator! You earn all the views and subs!
This is a video I'd expect from someone with over 100k subs, but you dont even have 1k?! You're SUPER underrated my guy!
You forgot a episode for like one of the phases where he’s a jerk I don’t know what it’s called but it’s weird. Patrick gets a crabby patty toy and doesn’t share it.
I think the episode your talking about is, Yours, Mine and Mine! Correct me if I’m wrong
@@Solar_Batz Yeah.
*_The moment the writers did._*
The image “from 1999” was in the episode Frankendoodle which came out in 2002 while the image “from 2024” was in Ink Lemonade which came out in 2018.
Came here to say this lol
Nice catch on that
My boss apparently thinks I'm stupid. She practically insulted my learning disability
That’s rough buddy
Bro changed a cartoon show to a patrick documentary
you are so underrated this video is amazing
How come I keep finding these amazing videos with low views? This should be way more popular
Patrick's selfish side of his character really started in season 1"Valentines Day" When he almost hurt Spongebob destroyed a whole carnival.
0:59 I'm just going to say this is one rich sponge based on the telescope alone.
In the 1999 he maybe dumb but at least he's layback and loyal.
"patrick doesnt have a grow phase on season 9"
what eating patrick, patrick the game and goodbye krabby patty?: we are a joke for you, right?
Average SpongeBob complainer doesn't even know Stephen cake back
That Big Sister Sam episode certainly is the icing on the cake of his stupidity.😂
More like when did patrick become brainless. Patrick was always stupid but after a certain point he reached a level beyond that.
another good thing to see to me is how Mr. Krabs become a simple greedy jerk without more substance
Patrick is Peter griffin 😭🙏
He obviously went to Jupiter to get more stupider
When he got hit by the wrench and said where’s the leak ma’am?
Patrick: NO! I'm Pinhead!
The og Patrick was the unemployed homie who helps you at your every problem.
To be fair, Patrick being essentially braindead is actually realistic. Sea Stars don't have nerves or brains. And they're lazy af.
Wow incredibly underratted channel, really good video analysing patricks dumbass 😭Can't wait to see your channel grow ❤
Damn, I want some Doritos and Goldfish
. M .
what a well rounded video thank you Spot
Imagine season 1 Patrick had its own show😭
Professor Lawrence Piers of the University of Chicago says: "I think Patrick gets stupider every year"
"Is mayonnaise an instrument?"
Sheesh i watched this video in the morning and you had 980 subs, now you're up to 1120. Congrats man
pre-season 4 pat was dumb.
post-season 4 pat was stupid.
this is the only way i can describe what i'm thinking.
14:07 Fungus AMOGUS
Spongebob also became more stupid tho which is saddening.
He doesn't talk back anymore, no great skills besides cooking, etc.
If I'm being completely honest, in season 1 Patrick was indeed stupid but STILL smart enough to figure out issues. Nowadays, though...
The question isn't when Patrick became stupid, the question is when was he ever not stupid
despite patrick being stupid rise and shine is one of my favorite sponge bob episodes
When I first watched you, you had 800 subscribers keep up the good work
Patrick used to be a somewhat slow, but kind and supportive friend. Now, he's just unnecessarily cruel
in the good era of spongebob patrick was just slow
Interesting vod, though kinda got lost towards the end since there were so many phases that were just relapses really that it just seemed like bloat content.
the first spongebob movie was the last time I watched Spongebob, I knew that if they continued they'd run the show into the ground and that's exactly what they did.
patrick will always be my favorite character though. as someone who isn’t the most bright, i can relate to him (no im not that dumb) but i 🩷 patrick
I am looking forward to your next SpongeBob video!
Patrick was stupid and oblivious but not outright mentally challenged. And he was still, very much supportive and a good friend. He might not know much but he will do everything he can to help SpongeBob
Good Patrick is a himbo. Bad Patrick is a chaotic toddler. Saved you 20 minutes.
I thought writers intended to make him stupid. Since starfish in real life don't have a brain which fits Patrick being dumb in a way.
SpongeBob and Patrick where a duo but now its not the same any more.
0:28 tree at the treedome🗿💀
Bro, great video
Agreed, super underrated.
Hope you blow up really soon!
Just a theory
patrick is more an enemy than a friend.. change my mind.. you CAN"T!
this is not "stupid" patrick is 100% brainless. patrick never had charm, patrick was never a friend, patrick was always an enemy
Flanderization.
Corny
@@dxmbro Yes yes you are
Explain
And the show getting more and over over-the-top, over the years.
I like this video, it’s a great analysis
I think there’s a few improvements you can make to structuring your video like being more concise labeling the phases.
1:25 Ah yes HIS “more stupider moments”
