I think the main bad thing about pipe weapons is how they look. The _idea_ of a home-built gun makes perfect sense in the wasteland. There are IRL crudely made weapons, notably the Blyskawica SMG manufactured by the Polish resistance, and the P.A. Luty SMG designed as a protest against gun control. There are also the famous "Khyber Pass" guns made in Afghanistan, which are often copies of real weapons like the Lee-Enfield. And they all look nicer than the pipe guns: not rusty, not splintery, even garage gunsmiths have coatings and sandpaper.
Yeah the folks who designed the weapons in FO4 needs to think about different career paths. The pipe weapons are so ugly
The big problem is the parts that are actually hard to make (like barrel) are just there in normal condition, but parts that should be easy to make properly are just made of random garbage for no reason.

@@dylanhitchcock6574 Don't get me wrong, it is a standard pattern with plans, but it was manufactured in improvised facilities, mostly converted auto or bicycle shops, not an arms factory. It was designed to be cheaply/crudely made on purpose, so they could keep making them during the occupation. A little more polished design, and you get something like a Sten or M3 grease gun.
Since Trudy at Drumlin Diner is guaranteed to sell a Suppressed Bolt Action Pipe Pistol I usually take it as an early game Mister Sandman weapon until I get a Suppressor on a Combat/Hunting Rifle
Personally I'd take the Pipe Bolt Action over the Hunting Rifle. You can upgrade it with Gun Nut a lot sooner than you can the Hunting Rifle, it weighs less than the Hunting Rifle, has lower Action Point cost than the Hunting Rifle and, with both fully upgraded, only does about 10 points less damage per shot than the Hunting Rifle.
It's wild that pipe guns are pre-war weapons. You see them on pre-war magazines and in pre-war safes.
@@TKcolinTK the design is pre-war, which isn’t surprising given the breakdown in the economy from the Resource Wars, DIY weapons may have been quite popular.

It may have been a case of all the weapon factories having to dedicate their production for the War effort so civilians wanting protection from "Chinese Infiltrators" had to get creative.
It's useful as the earliest sniper weapon you can get. There's a guaranteed scoped version a couple of houses down the street from the Museum, and Trudy has a guaranteed suppressed one. Get both, mod the scopecand suppressor onto the same gun.
Been packing one of these for a while on my survival run. Trudy sells a suppressed one, and for a sneaky sniper build that it’s available early makes it super-important.
Long term it’s trash, but as an early game weapon it has a specific niche.
Worth noting that the mods on it take a lot less Gun Nut to do and you can basically fully upgrade the weapon at rank 2.
Like the double barrel shotgun it’s there for the early game alone.
For what it’s worth I’m actually a fan of the .38 pipes. Found a bleed one on my first play through and used it on full auto with the lightest parts possible. Extremely light by FO4 standards, cheap ammo.
I wouldn't say it's early game only. So long as you avoid the scopes and heavy barrels it has surprisingly low Action Point cost especially as a pistol. If memory serves it does more damage per shot than any other suppressed hand gun and, with the Gun Slinger perk, it can do as much damage in a round of VATS as a shot from a Fatman (assuming you don't have any explosive perks that is).
I have a special place in my heart for the pipe bolt-action rifle since I got a two-shot version on my first ever playthrough. I named it Sniffles, changed it to .50 and it was my secret weapon whenever I was sniping. I used that character for a long time and didn't find a replacement until my first time playing Far Harbor (recently) and switched it out for the Old Reliable lever-action rifle. Still have Sniffles on a plaque in my home base with my other special, yet sadly outclassed legendary weapons.
I really struggle to see what role this gun is even supposed to fill. Like, the other two pipe weapons do make sense to me, as .38 is only used by the automatic pipe weapons (by default), and combat rifles don't really show up in the early game to make better use of .45 than the revolver. But then, .308 is even harder to get than .45 early on, and by the time you can even buy it from ANY vendor, you'll also be able to get your hands on a hunting rifle. I don't even think I had the chance to fire one of these a single time before getting a hunting rifle.
The point is its lighter than a fully modded hunting rifle with similar damage numbers. Also has lower gun nut requirements. Honestly I used it far more than the hunting rifle as 20 weight for 50 base damage is pretty bad. Easily replaceable with a combat rifle....
That being said, both weapons are pretty bad, expensive ammo, slow fire rate, low damage.
Yeah, it's really bad. Only use I can see for it is to have a pistol that can function as a silenced sniper rifle, for what that's worth. It'd need to have instigating on it too or it just won't do enough damage to even matter if you're high level on survival or just playing on very hard in general.
There is one genuine role the pipe pistol serves that I will go to bat for
Modded properly, it has the lowest VATS cost of any gun in the game, making it ideal for charging up VATS crits for your other, bigger guns
And it fires dirt cheap ammo, so that's a plus
I'm not sure why you'd have problems getting .308. Trash Can Carla and Trudy at Drumlin Diner will both have a good supply and, so long you've done the Gun Nut upgrades, you won't need a lot of shots as it's damage is so high. With the Gun Nut 1 upgrades and Gunslinger 2 (doable by Level 7) you're doing around 70 damage with a Pipe Bolt Action Pistol and, assuming you have 10 Agility, you can get off 7 attacks in a round of VATS. That's in the same damage range as a shot from a base Fatman.
I think the main idea of the pipe weaponry is to give customizable weapons to the player early on (most mods only need Gun Nut 2 to complete) and to allow the 'hordes' of enemies to have ranged weapons without being too overwhelming to the player.

The amount of legendary Pipe guns, switchblades, and level 1 leather armor you find in the game is just criminal.

If you're running a gunslinger build, the pipe bolt action can become the longest ranged gun in the game when it's outfitted with long barrels and a pistol grip, since it benefits from gunslinger's range increase, allowing you to get up to 300+ range in a pretty light package.
With a decent legendary effect like VATS enhanced, two shot or instigating, you can have a pretty scary sniper pistol to pick off enemies from extremely long range.
I tried it once and noticed it is not that accurate but do the job and is very light! Then I used it as a mid range one shot shotgun and had some fun.

If memory serves an upgraded Laser Pistol with the right mods will outrange the Pipe Bolt Action but will cost more action points to use. I had the Righteous Authority up to 400 plus range with one character while the Pipe Bolt Action didn't quite reach 300 but I got 4 extra attacks in a round of VATS and did more damage per shot.
A proper post-war bolt action in Fallout should look like a combination of the MAS-36, various volksgewehrs and lastest ditch of Arisakas, and be chambered in .45-70 (because random modern steel *can* contain BP pressures, and smokeless is far harder to make), where the downsides are relatively low range, *very* heavy ammo (at only 9.5 cartridges to a pound, each weighs more than double what .308 does), and the smoke screen.
I actually like this gun. It can be fun to use with the right mods early game.

I like It, mostñy because I think It fits with the world. Bethesda's wastelands simple dont feel like they happen 200 years after the bombs
Best Legendary on pipe weapons are the Enraging effects because you can crit the toughest enemy in a group while taking very little health, so they can fight the rest of the crowd for longer
Even though, pipe weapons are trash, I'm still glad they are in the game. They definitely fit the world and would be created by various people of questionable skills.
Most BS thing is to have a raider or super mutant with a bone stock pipegun kill you in a flash meanwhile your fully upgraded gun with the associated perks maxed can fire a full mag without killing that same enemy somehow not killing them cause of how the game is coded
The idea behind the pipe-weapons being a versatile and easy to make weapon is great. But that versatility is kind of moot when every other firearm in the game has that same thing.
If only the pipe weapons had the crazy modding, and the rest of the guns had a more stripped back system, I think they'd stand out a bit more.
I believe you've mentioned that you don't use VATS very often in FO 4 so that might explain the issue but you are dead wrong about the pipe bolt action at least in the pistol version. So long as you don't add scopes or heavy barrels the pipe bolt action can get an impressive number of shots in a round of VATS. With 10 Agility you can get 7 shots (including the reload). That's over 230 damage in a single round.
Add in gun mods from just the first level of Gun Nut and the bonus damage from a couple of points into Gunslinger and you can be doing 70 plus damage a shot or 490 damage in a round of VATS by level 7. That's as much as the base damage of the Fatman Launcher!
Then, if you're building for a Critical Banker/Luck build, add the criticals and start pushing Agility past 10 and you'll have a gun that will easily out dps .44 Magnum Revolvers while using the more readily (at early levels at least) .308 ammo. Also, while there's no unique version of the pipe bolt action there is one you can buy from a shop that will always have a suppressor (location spoiler below) so you can have a silenced weapon at level 1.
So it is a bit specialized but, if you're going for a stealthy pistol user, I'd give it the edge even over the Deliverer.

I'm pretty sure you can get a hunting rifle very early. I usually get one next to the Drumlin Diner on a billboard sniper nest, you have to jump a gap on the billboard to get it but still.
There's also a Hunting Rifle on the roof of the Red Rocket just to the east of Cambridge Square. If you don't have any mods affecting Hunting Rifles installed it will always have a full stock and scope on it even if you go at level one. That said I don't consider Hunting Rifle worth it in FO 4. The Pipe Bolt Action is lighter, has lower upgrade requirements, lower Action Point costs and, with both fully upgraded, the Hunting Rifle only does about 10 extra damage per shot.
It falls off but it's good for an early game sniper. Especially if you buy the suppressed one from Truddy. I feel like you're really missing the mark on how decent it is in the early game.

@@DirtyDev pretty much every gun in 4 is ugly.
It has better default sights than the laser musket (imho) but it's otherwise useless. At least the revolver variants can get you through a few very early encounters, but generally pipe weapons as a while aren't even worth it for caps, let alone combat.
Tried .308 combat rifle for a while but today I always go, no matter the weapon, the "calibrated powerful" receiver.
I only use the pipe weapons in .38 caliber if it's all the way upgraded and in automatic, after a while though you just stop using it regardless
A fully modded maxed out Combat Rifle is pushing 22 lbs in weight. A fully modded Pipe Rifle is a LOT lighter. Sure they don't deal a lot of damage compared to the heavier guns, but that extra weight can be a significant burden especially on Survivor mode. So if you get a nice Pipe Weapon affix you could find a lot of value in having the lighter range weapon that still gets the job done, and they can be modded like crazy to suit whatever specific needs you want.
The pipe bolt action is amazing, the hunting rifle looks really nice but it's like twice the weight for a few extra points of damage. Way not worth it, hard skip and just go for a combat rifle from the pipe..

I really hate the pipe weapons. You are correct there are just better guns early on to being using this literal piece of trash. I only used some pipe guns because I had a ton of .38 rounds early on and sometimes nothing else.

This weapon has no unique variant, because even with legendary effects its still a dumpster with nice coat.

The pipe weapons are ugly, but also poorly designed. They are made out of scraps of wood and wire, yet have magazines and silencers and scopes.
And the weapon economy just completely shits on them. You get the 10mm pistol before you can EVER get a pipe weapon, and it is better than every single pipe weapon!
