The Radium Rifle is a Volksturmgewehr. A semi automatic only rifle that is really hard to disassemble since it was made to have as little moving parts as possible. Its plausible that the Children of Atom reverse engineered it because you can probably make it in your garage given how simple it is.

Question is why did Bethesda use it in the first place. Not many were built so add one in the US would only make sense of it was a unique, something like the M2 Carbine would work better as it’s was made in much larger numbers and there plenty of them from the Pacific Islands going east to Europe

^ look at what’s needed to build either one. The radium rifle or volksturmgewehr was made from simple stamped components which is why there were produced so quickly during the end of the war. @Mr3000 my idea for how they got them was that they found a bunch of reproduction weapons. That would explain the rechamber into a more common caliber that wouldn’t require a completely new design. Even now some companies are making reproduction guns.

Fun Fact: The reason, or one of the reasons, there are so many left handed guns is 'cause the artist who did the guns for the original Counter Strike was left handed and modeled the weapons as such. Since then any weapons that used those CS weapons as reference also turned out left handed. Sometimes people even did it on purpose as a nod to the artist. Seeing as the two weapons that do this FO4 are the AK and the Hunting Rifle, which just a generic bolt action, leads me to believe that they used CS models as reference material.

I find the random legendary drops can add *a lot* of character to a playthrough, especially if obtained relatively early. You didnt mention it, but the sound of the 44 revolver in FO4 is AWESOME!
I think all the pipe weapons fit the "fit the world" since the reason they are weird and awkward is because they are (as you can easily tell) handcrafted scrapy low quality guns with a tone of room for modification. This is archived perfectly in concept and in practice, but they are terrible within the game progresion since durability isnt a thing and you outscale them at min 2 when you get the handcannon that is the 10mm, in the vault (you can play the entire game up to any level with just the 10mm and be fine, one shotting most enemies), with ammo being the only problem but not really if you dont make it a submachinegun.
I think the problem with the animations was that they wanted to have all guns be on the same side, the bottom right corner. I dont know about how being X handed looks with 2 handed rifles (apparently you carry them on the opposite shoulder is what im taking from the video?), but they must have had someone load the guns for the animation and model them, and decided that they wanted to change the shoulder instead of fliping them? The pipe bolt action was probably intended to be a single shot but got changed somewhere in the development, probably pretty late on judging by way it uses a revolver style full moon clip for it's reload animation. That said the pipe bolt action is a monster in VATS. If you've never tried it with a pistol build it can get nearly as many shots off in a round of VATS as the Deliverer but does more damage per shot so, depending on the upgrades (stay clear of telescopic sights or long heavy barrels), it can do more damage in a round of VATS than the Deliverer.

I think the reason why some of the guns are left handed is because video games have different priorities from real guns.
With a real gun, you want it to be unobtrusive. Seeing the rounds ejecting is a nuisance at best. But in a video game? Seeing the round lets your brain think "I it is doing the gun thing. I see it doing the gun thing". It is trying to use visual language to say things to us, even if it has to do so by doing things that we normally wouldn't need to hear.

The pipe revolver should be hurts my eyes tier. One reason is you can chamber it in 308, and bottleneck catriges don’t work in revolvers. Thats why every magnum round is long and tubular. Second reason is the gases would burn your arm whenever you hold the gun infront of the wheel. Third is revolvers require precise timing to function and work properly in the internals. Think of it like a watch. The notches on the cylinder have to align with the hand inside perfectly in order to rotate and function. Any gun nut in development would’ve sniffed this out and axed such a weapon.

We've seen other ridiculously impractical weapons in the other games, and i don't think the assault rifle is that offensive tbh. Plus, fo4 is a bit too goofy for, like, an m4 or more realistic weapons. The handmade rifle being one of the few irl guns only fits due to the fact they made it goofy by taking off the top cover off and giving it a shovel for a stock lol
Don't get me wrong, it ain't perfect. If it were in fnv/f3, it would be the stupidest thing ever. Those games are more grungy, where real guns fit much better.

I really like weird bulky guns though so I'd put it quite a bit higher, around "Fine" if it wasn't in a Fallout game. I wish they did something else with it entirely and have an actual, you know, assault rifle in its place and it turned into an LMG type gun which the game really lacks anyway.
It kinda tracks though, as this gun was actually the first working gun they got into the game and experimented with the attachment system and was actually meant to be used entire by Power Armor users, so I guess they weren't really sure of where the game's art style would go but kept it cause they already worked on it so much at the time.

There are some problems with weapons in Fallout 4, but the WORST crime is that they seem to be trying to reboot weapons and make weapons from older games non-canonical. That's a crime. The modification system from Fallout 4 is fantastic, but on average the weapons in Fallout 4 are worse than New Vegas. There's no excuse for that. They say that they ran out of time to finish the assault rifle, but why didn't they start with a New Vegas model to begin with? Then fo76 uses fo4 weapons??!

I unironically really like the 10mm design in fallout 4. Looks weird in 3rd person sure but it's a pretty much completely unique design and not hobble cobbled together parts from different irl guns as with most guns. The bulbous look fits the retro sci-fi look imo

    The thing is...
I don't mind the combat shotgun? I do wish we had a HUNTING shotgun alongside it and that it had an option to maybe either automatic or pump-action since it is something made for the army and in my opinion is something that makes sense, but other than that, I don't have too much of an issue with it, and I can see the US army taking the design of the KS-23 (which is honestly what it looks like the most to me), and modifying the design for their own troops, as I'm pretty sure that there's some weapons in our current military that the contractors or whatever have done that with-

The .44 revolver is missing the firing pin and is based on a double action but your character always fires it single action.

You do know fallout is not set in the 1950s right? Multiple times you talk about weapons fitting in the 1950s but fallout doesn't take place in the 1950s. The bombs dropped in the 2070s. Sure the games kind of have a 1950s style but they are not in the 1950s

Honestly, since they made power armor so big and powerful, they should have separated weapons into compatible and not compatible with power armor, and made things like the minigun cumbersome and difficult to use without it, while making pistols, SMGs, rifles and such incompatible.
    Something like this:
    Heavy weapons + Power armor
    = good.
    Heavy weapons + Normal armor
    = cumbersome and difficult.
    Power armor + Normal weapons
    = not possible
That way nothing would have to be scaled up to fit the power armor or look weirdly small, and it would make sense.

Minigun is "fine" in that it functions like a "minigun." Where it has problems lies in the fact that the character "reloads" it by taking out the empty "drum," shakes around the gun, then puts it back in. Reload animation aside, it is also just disappointing as far as damage goes, more than likely due to the fact that its found so early in the game, but even then, we don't even get proper damage increases. For example, you could make it in .308 like most real life examples have. Or go even bigger and make it .50 if your blood is rich enough for that.

Most of the guns in fallout 4 look like they were designed by a blind child. That being said, the Laser Pistol redesign is the one diamond in the rough, in my opinion

So many cool designs with the art in Fallout 4. I love looking through the art book! Some of the weapons are good, then some are questionable or quite rough. I really like the handmade AK, the laser musket, the fatman, and others. The hunting rifle bolt on the left is just bizarre as it's not common and we even had a right-hand hunting rifle with animations that fit all the way back in Fallout 3. Also, glad there are mods to make the revolver into double action. Strange it's single only in the base game. Also, while i like the Gauss rifle, i absolutely love the old fallout 3 Gauss rifle with all the wood furnishing! Looks badass and has a vibe that fits early 20th century guns! Love it! 👌🏻
The new assault rifle was designed for power armor, but I wish we still had the G3. It should have just been called like power armor machine gun, or hell, just bring in the LEWIS GUN! That would be sick! Love the Lewis gun! Also, yeah, there should be a BAR and other common American weapons of the era. Like I'm surprised there's no 1911! The ppk is cool and I liked the inclusion of the volksturmgewehr! Overall, well said! Good list, my dude! 😁😎👍🏻

Maybe consider that in the real world weapons arent everywhere, you are not going to go to your local military base and see some random famas lying around, curtain factorys have guards with specific firearms or just a standard handgun, i look at fallout 4 and think that the military located in the common wealth were given weapons that were in storage, maybe these weapons that look like weird world war 1 and 2 kitbashes, is because the combat rifle/shotgun and assault rifle were weapons developed shortly after the 2nd world war. The assault rifle was made for power armor in lore so i don't think it is out of the realm of possiblility that one looked at a water cooling jacket and think "man what if i can carry this thing around".

The amount of weapon modding you can do in fallout 4 is the best in the series! The weapons on the other hand are some of the worst in the series! (haven't played 76 so I cant comment on it). Really if you go look at some of the weapon mods people make on the nexus it becomes apparent just how good things could have been if bethesda decided to stick with real world guns or at least guns that look like they could exist in the real world like the chinese assault rifle. Honestly the way weapons are in fallout 4 is a lot like the way the game is as a whole. Some great ideas and concepts with some landing wonderfully, others being a little shaky and some just absolutely falling flat.

One group of weapons I hate is just the pipe guns, because they show a lack of care for the world of Fallout. After the war, people can build guns; there are plenty of skilled gunsmiths, and not everyone is a moronic raider. If they put more attention into it, maybe we could have got some sweet ZIP guns, not exactly as crude as the pipe guns (nor as nonsensical), but still obviously creditable with scrap materials and gun parts.
Bethesda also knows hardly anything about guns, because a pipe revolver in its base state (.45) would be INSANELY powerful and high recoil for a revolver, and the length of the cartridge makes it look almost like a .45 LONG COLT. That is an INSANE level of power from a revolver, and would for sure be better that the .38 and .308 augmentations.
Past games in the series did all of this way better, and I think the first thing to fix with fallout 4 weapons are the pipe guns. After that, you have to just make the guns more like the other games, instead of being a cartoony-“Fallout” weapon.

I always liked the jam random junk together weapons because a lot of weapons have been through a nuclear blast and are either destroyed or did survive but would definitely be rusted after a few years. Also I think they’re maybe different because it’s just different states that will be mostly far apart to actually have the same sorta sense to build their gun like others. That’s just what I think when a weapon goes through an apocalypse.
