Audi Q7 vs Range Rover Sport: Something old, something new...
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лип 2024
- Over the past few years, if you'd have asked us whether you should buy an Audi Q7 as your next family car, our answer would have been a resounding yes. Seven-seat practicality, solid quality and a grown-up driving experience mean it's traditionally been a consummate all-rounder. However, the good old Q7 is getting on a bit now, so can it still cut the mustard in quite the same way as it did? And how does it fare against fresh-out-the-box luxury SUV rivals such as the all-new Range Rover Sport?
There's another interesting aspect to this test, too. Back in its heyday, any sensible person would've specced their Q7 with a torquey and economical diesel engine. However, the world is a very different place these days, and attitudes to diesel have changed. So, does diesel power still make sense in cars like these?
To find out, Rebecca Jackson pits the 50 TDI version of the Q7, with its 286 horsepower 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, against the Range Rover Sport P530, with its stonking 4.4-litre V8 petrol. Why? Well, because why not?
In this CarGurus UK video review, Rebecca tests our two contenders in a variety of areas, such as practicality, quality, technology, affordability, and of course, what they're like to drive.
Audi Q7 review: www.cargurus.co.uk/research/A...
Pros
Serene ride on air suspension
Beautifully made and practical interior
SQ7 is very fast indeed
Cons
Strong resale values make used examples expensive
Third row not as roomy as a Land Rover Discovery's
Styling looks a bit awkward
The CarGurus verdict
The Audi Q7 is an excellent luxury SUV, whether you are thinking of buying a new or used example.
Updates in 2019 have kept the car at the top of the class. The all-digital cockpit will keep gadget fans happy, while mild-hybrid technology has improved fuel economy and emissions.
If you are looking at the Q7 as a used car, don't be put off by the stiff prices. It's a cracking car to drive and to travel in, and running costs are bearable considering the car's performance and size. The Q7 is roomy, practical, and well finished.
The SQ7 is crazy-quick for an SUV, and is the one we'd really want sitting on our driveway. But the 50 TDI or the earlier 268bhp Q7 3.0 TDI models with are the pick of the range if you want to keep the purchase price and fuel bills within reasonable bounds
Range Rover Sport review: www.cargurus.co.uk/research/L...
Pros
Fantastically luxurious interior
Great to drive on and off road
Impressive electric-only range on PHEV models
Cons
Potential question marks over brand reliability
No seven-seat option
Higher-spec models are very pricey
The CarGurus verdict
The Range Rover Sport is a world-class luxury SUV. From the modern, lavish-feeling interior, to the smooth yet balanced way it drives, it is just a delight to spend time in whether you’re after a relaxing drive home or wanting to enjoy a good road. The array of powertrains and trims means that there’s also guaranteed to be a model to suit everyone - especially when a pure electric version joins the lineup.
However, the reliability concerns can’t be ignored despite our hopes that these new Range Rover models will change that pervasive cloud of reliability fears that has hung over Land Rover for too many years. It also can’t be ignored that this is now one of the more expensive options in an already pricey lineup of posh 4x4s, and it’s a shame that four-wheel steer is only on the truly expensive models. For these annoying but un-ignorable reasons that see us dropping the outstanding Range Rover Sport from the five stars that we’d like to give it.

RR looks great and will go off road BUT that’s where it starts to go wrong unfortunately,as soon as warranty is gone so should the owner, Audi is better put together for a longer ownership
5Y warranty…😊
For me the Range Rover beats the Audi in pretty much every area. It's way better to look at inside and out and sounds good as well in this V8 version. I don't know if people in the market for this type of vehicle care about fuel consumption, but I would take the V8 for sure as prob the real world difference once you have offset high diesel fuel costs is not that significant. Far better off worrying about depreciation if running costs bug you. For sure RRs have a bad rep for reliability and a lot of money has been invested in new plant to improve it for these new gen cars. Only time will tell if it's worked but I hope so, its a great looking machine.
Range Rover is a JUNK that will be most of the time in service for repairs and you will already swap 1 engine before 200.000km
Given that the Audi is an 8 year old design, I think it does really well and is still the more practical of the two. Obviously it is starting to fall behind in other areas compared to the box fresh RR Sport as expected but still not very equitable to compare a bottom of the range Q7 to a top of the range Sport. I completely agree with you on the lag issue though, by the time that my Q7 starts to respond, it should be doing around 30mph, very unnerving when pulling out of a junction.
Pleased to see you conclude that Diesel is still the better choice for this type of car. Diesel and Petrol are being banned at the same time so people should not be bullied into sub 20mpg Petrol versions.
A bit like comparing apples and oranges... petrol vs diesel, top spec vs basic, 5 seats vs 7, pretty red vs dull grey (I thought I should sneak that in).
We’ve brought the v8 to compare against the Q7 because we couldn’t get hold of a like for like engine to compare it.
Audi q7 all day long. Although personally I would go for a VW Touareg Black edition.
Some great views of these two Rebecca. One small omission is the cubby space as you never know when you where to best place that banana but not forget where it is. Previous viewers of the channel should know where I'm going here. If it was my money and could afford to change the car before the warranty ran out I'd go for the RR, otherwise I'd go for the Q7. I'd also be a tad concerned on the depreciation if I was a private buyer, an ex demo or used may make more financial sense subject to availability.
RRS to Q7: Hey Pal, you just blew in from boring town?
Sadly straight after this video was made the range rover broke down 😂😂😂
Range rover will spend most of its time getting repaired then they will say warrenty is void
I have just purchased (ordered it back in August last year) a Porsche Cayenne GTS Coupe. It replaces my Range Rover Sport SDV8 HSE Dynamic 2017. I am still getting used to it. I still have The Sport and to be honest, I think it might be the better vehicle. I test drove an Audi Q8 before I made my decision to buy the Cayenne. It was very disappointing. The all black Cayenne is a great looking vehicle but so is the All Black RR Sport. I always buy new. You know what you are getting.
Wish either of these could overcome the emissions restrictions here in the states. Both are great alternatives.
I don’t like the grill of the newer Q7 or the touchscreens and huge area of black plastic in front of the passenger so I bought a 2018 50 tdi Vorsprung
The Vorsprung pack solved the premium feel issue as well - leather everywhere, nearly every option etc.
It’s inert to drive but as a long distance, luxurious family car it’s great. Returns 40-45mpg on a motorway run as well, with an all time best of 51mpg on a long stretch of lower speed limit motorway.
Love my RRS, nothing come closet it
Only services
Dieselsare great engines with brilliant fuel range
She claims these cars are so large, yet they are only 10% wider than cars that would be described as small.
lol that q7 will be running long after the rrs has been put out to pasture in the workshop
dream on
Both of them will be retired in the graveyard while the 2005 Toyota Landcruiser will still be running carefree for decades to come 😂
I'd still rather have the OG luxury Range Rover, rather than some VW soft roader with an Audi badge.
@@BoskiM land cruiser ain't luxury tho so no thanks
@@gc2234 u can say the same thing for the urus using ur knowledge
Isnt there 6 isofix seats in the audi q7 ?
Bet that range rover drinks more than father jack.
The Q7 is boring unless you have a body kit, the RRS is miles better, if you can afford it
Gave up watching after too many adverts!
You can get back home in the Audi 😮, no always so in the RR.
At least with the Audi it won’t break down!
I know u can't afford RRS
Audis are for Volkswagen customers that like to get ripped off with some badge Engineering.
Wow....what an original comment.
Enough with the same tired old clichés from people who will never own the vehicles they speak about.
Don’t you believe it
Every car u test it's best for u. Like that joke of XC90
I've been waiting and waiting for years hoping Audi will create a New model on par or better than the RR, Q7/8 just isn't in the same class. Cmon Audi! How about a Q10?
Q7 daha güzel. İmkanım olsa Q7 alırdım. Quattro her şeye bedelidir 💙
Audi Q7 better Suv than Range Rover, not just on cost. Audi has better build quality and will keep going, not like the Range Rover. Shame JLR hasn't improved the reliability after all these years. 😮
Audi comes from a sea of dull in terms of design, Range Rover everyday of the week
To bad is a junk that spends most of the time in service
What do you pay for such a diesel in the UK and for a petrol..In Holland they have decided to make driving a diesel only possible for people that can afford paying 2400 to 3000 euro each year, for a RR petrol 1200 a year.... ANYONE?
I’ve got a Range Rover velar at present, have had for the last 4 years , best car I’ve ever owned, thinking of upgrading to the new sport, wouldn’t drive anything else .
المشكلات الرنج مصروف الوقود كثير في السير يوميا لمسفات طويلا
Could you please give your measurements in metric rather than the obsolete British? Thanks
As I’m extremely well off I don’t care how unreliable the RR is, that is the problem for the person (who should have worked harder) that decides to buy it second hand (/s)
On looks only, that Range got the Q7 looking quite old, like 2004😮 heavily outdated appearance
Better value, Volvo XC90 RR is just to expensive and not built well enough for that price.
Much better car and stronger residuals than a XC90 so in the end a Q7 or sport is a no brainer against a 2L XC90.
I think the q7 looks are quite outdated
I have Q7 best car ever
Had a Range Rover before
Range Rover after sales sucks
They don’t care after you have brought the car no one talk about this think before you buy a range rover😂
How is the steering, I had Range Rover sport ‘22 for a month it’s a very heavy steering wheel compared to the Audi
Allegro Estate beats them both hands down.
But the Sport and eventually you'll pull up next to a real Range Rover and look like a poor relation
I would go for the Audi Q7. Range Rovers have been stolen more times in recent times with their shambolic security and we have fools on here that would still part away with their money to buy one and then not ghost their cars and then complain and cry when robbers steal it off their driveway. Debate with yourself on this. I said what I said.
Nice,cars aren't bad either
Need a free Range Rover - gather here let’s hold hands 😂😂
Squidgy? Piano black fairy? 🤣
we don't normally hear those words here in the states in an auto review...😉🤗
Diesels have never been popular here, as they are considered dirty and smelly. 🙆💩
Different attitudes, evidently across the pond, in our british cousins....🤨
Also due to the large difference in the price of petrol/gas. The turbo diesel saloon/hatchback I drove would get 50+ mpg. It all helps when our government puts a massive tax on the fuel. Hence why it is so expensive. Best wishes. :)
Fuel prices are more than double in the UK than the USA. A turbo diesel will do 50mpg, a V8 about 20mpg as described in the video.
Nio Es7 is better than both
Neither. A Lexus.
Lmaoo Nah😍
You mean a Toyota for the gullible people that want to spend more money for some badge Engineering?
Gold diggers
The range is nice looking. The Q7 is a pig. Too many issues with RR not worth the bother!?
