I'll tell you, if you didn't know it already, that line "I'd get down on my knees for you" is a heart melter. Any lady who can withstand that one is ice.
At the end of an early live performance, someone stood up and shouted "That's righteous, brother" ... and that was when they decided to call themselves that.
Blue Eyed Soul at it's finest; high school classmates. So glad they found each other and touched our hearts with their talent. RIP Bobby Lee Hatfield and Carry on Bill Medley.
They got their name from a group of black Marines. They did one of their first shows at a blues bar, and when the crowd saw they were white, they started booing and throwing things on the stage. So the Righteous Brothers just starting singing. It literally shocked the crowd into silence. Afterwards the group of marines said, “ That was Righteous, brothers.” That’s how they got their band name. lol
“They adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!"
The tall one is Bill Medley the other is Bobby Hatfield who sadly passed away from a drug overdose a couple years ago. Bill is in his seventies and still sings.
Great song. Great duo. An old favorite. I once sang this at work...while working side by side with my boss. I didn't know she liked them.or knew the song....but I was singing both Bill and Bobby's lines at the end. ... My boss got all excited... It set a good on pace... She was all "Sing it ! Darrin !" It was a good night's work that night. Fun.
Really got to me that sore spot. Think we all have it. But such a joy to go there with Righteous Brothers. Thanks for sharing your reaction You sound like a gentle guy. So glad you went there with us ❤️🎶✌️😎❤️
Edit: A lot of people thought they were black until they saw them 😂 They got their name from some black marines who saw them at a gig & said, “That’s righteous, brothers!” This was the most requested/played song on the radio in the last century. “You’re My Soul and Inspiration” and “Unchained Melody” are 2 more good songs by them. “everybody” was a figure of speech…not a good one, admittedly. But every reactor I’ve seen thought so. 🤷🏼♀️
Then I guess I’m not “everybody “. I assumed they were white from day one. The group lead singer that fooled me was The Newbeats with their Bread and Butter song in 1964.
You can see them being interviewed by Andy Williams in 1965 they told how they got the name and they said they were in a club down South and when they finished some guys yelled that was righteous brothers they liked that and made that their name. You can see the interview by searching Andy Williams and see the show they were on.
Not really brothers, but Bobby Hatfield (tenor on the left) and Bill Medley (baritone on the right) were definitely righteous, the definition of blue eyed soul. Next up should be Bobby's solo of Unchained Melody live in 1965 (the one where he's wearing a pink blazer). The studio version was a number one hit in 1965 and again 25 years later when it was in the movie Ghost.
Blue Eyed Soul! Not blood brothers Phil Spector was their producer & he is known for The Wall of Sound.... Saw them 1965...incredible classy soulful singers. "Soul & Inspiration" "Just Want To Make Love To You." Never Walk Alone
This is the most played song on radio and television (there was no Apple Play or youtube) in the 20th century with 8,000,000 plays from 1964 until 2000. Bobby Hatfield is the tenor and Bill Medly is the baritone. Bobby sang alone on some songs for movie themes. Ebb Tide is one. Bobby sang UNCHAINED MELODY. Bill sang the theme for the movie DIRTY DANCING, HAVING THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, and sang the lead in I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU which is a Mississippi Delta Blues song. Their catalog of music is epic. They are in THE ROCK AND ROLL OF FAME.

Thanks for letting the music play with your reactions in your facial expressions and comments, as if you and we are in a concert together just reacting. This and Unchained Melody were two favorite songs from college…so good to see you and other appreciating so much!
No, they are not brothers except of the soul, that would be blue-eyed soul! I loved your reaction! This is my third time sitting in on this one! I'm sure I will come back again to this one, great song, great reaction!
When I was 21, I first heard these guys. That was 1964. We used to call them, "blue eyed soul". Now, at 79, i still get chills every time that i hear them do this song. Thank you for posting this video. It brought many fond memories back for an old man. Thank you.
If you liked this song, you would like Soul and Inspiration. It was written as a follow-up to the success of this song, peaked at #1 for three straight weeks, and features the beautiful harmonies of both "brothers". Unchained Melody is also a great song, peaking at #4 and featured in the movie Ghost, but it is a solo by Bobby Hatfield (the tenor voice). If you want a solo, you can't go wrong with Unchained Melody. If you want the harmonies of both guys, then check out Soul and Inspiration.
I'm71 years old and grew up with this great music. The funny part of the songs of my decade was I didn't know that a lot of the songs I listened to were preformed by Black Artist until Time Life had a special on the song of the 60's and 70's and showed the artist who sang them. Back then we only had radios couldn't afford records so never went into a record store I guess living in a small town has some draw backs LOL
“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Best Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 88 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" was the most played song on the radio in the 20th Century. "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965. Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......
RIGHT RAD!!!...the name Righteous Brothers...couldn't be better...on so many levels. And your analysis of the lyrics is on point. These lyrics express the feelings of deep love lost...that so many of us humans endure. Quite a number of the Righteous Brothers' songs have lyrics that touch us emotionally on a very deep level. The songs Lyrics, the Musical Arrangements...and THOSE VOCALS...oh my. So unique...and so glad we can Share them through these Reaction Videos. Thanks.
Welcome to what we called BLUE EYE SOUL! There was some of the best music in the 50's, 60's and 70's! The fact that it is still selling many years later! They are not brothers! I hope you you do more from the golden years of rock! Jerry Butler and many more.
Soul with a Capital "S:" Produced by Phil Spector and his wall of sound. This is why they are all in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, ( Bill, Bobby & Phil)
The Righteous Brothers were making a pretty good living touring up and down the West Coast singing at black clubs. A record producer heard them, and convinced them to make some records, which went bananas over the radio. I was a young teenager, and we had two radio stations in Houston that played teen music...and back then, that meant Motown as well as the white music. Almost half-and-half, so that's what I grew up listening to and loving. The Righteous Brothers fit right in with that. Back then, it was referred to as "Blue-eyed soul."

Saw them in San Diego live in 1965 with my girl friend. They were pure class. There were some Black folks there too. Lots of their songs are classics in my mind like this song. Soul & Inspiration, Brown Eyed Women, See That Girl, Little Latin Lupe Loo,Just Want to Make Love To You, When You Walk in a Storm, Just Once In My Life....Good reaction young man.👍
I greatly loved and appreciated your breakdown of "You've lost That Lovin' Feeliin'". You spoke highly of the production (Phil Spector) and of the lyrics. The feelings embodied in the lyrics, and the lyrics themselves, were king in the production: everything and everyone was subject to them. The Righteous Brothers and the production team delivered both the feelings and lyrics beautifully and so had a hit.
Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley, the greatest duo ever. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the best husband/wife songwriters on the planet. Follow-up to Lovin' Feeling, is "Soul and Inspiration," also written by Mann and Weil. Unchained Melody" solo by Bobby, Live performance on the Andy Williams Show in 1965. Just Bobby and the mic with the Andy Williams orchestra. A whole nation of women fell in love that night. I was one of 'em. He will blow you away! And there is so much more of them!
According to stats, this was the most played song of the 20th century. Now that’s amazing, considering how many other songs that were written & played thru that century by any artists.
When they started out they went by another stage name. While doing a show a guy in the audience yelled out That was righteous, brother" They liked it &took the name.
Great reaction! Thank you for allowing me to sit in with you again! This is Blue-eyed soul at its finest! I loved your take on the song too, it matches my own!
I believe they got their name when they were singing somewhere, and someone called out, in amazed appreciation, "You guys are Righteous, Brothers!!" So no, they're not brothers by blood but definitely in their beautiful voices and harmonies. Bill Medley is the baritone; Bobby Hatfield is the tenor. I just love 'em! 🥰
They had a regular singing gig in a club outside the El Toro Marine Base in California. The black marines on the base liked their music a lot and after a really good show one of them called out "That was righteous, brothers" and they ended up choosing that as their group name. They hit the big time when they were on a stage bill with the Ronettes and the famous/infamous producer Phil Spectre heard them and arranged a contract deal with their small label. They were the first white group Spectre had ever signed. Their musical style became known as blue eyed soul.
No not brothers, no Autotune just pure talent. Bill Medley baritone n Bobby Hatfield tenor. Bobby died afew years ago but Bill is still singing, I was fortunate to be friends with Bill They are blue eyed soul. The name of group came from when they were singing at a pub( with many black people were there) They all said Your Righteous Brothers n it stuck. Soul n Inspiration is another favorite. I listened to them since the 60's n yes im old but their music keeps me young. Thank you for keeping their music alive. I'm subscribed for sure
I love how you really listened to this song! You heard what they were relaying through the lyrics. I think we all need to listen to each other with your intensity. Really listen, focus, and hear each other. Your reaction video has shown me that I need to look others in the eye, give my full attention, and really hear what people are saying. Thank you for the way you react. My first video of yours, and I hit subscribe! 👏👏👏
Waaayyy before their time. In the late 50s and 60s, they were amazing. I was youngest of 8 girls and music was constant in my house. I actually still have their originals albums. Not vinyl…. Glass. They are not real brothers. Bobby Hatfield passed some years ago. Bill Medley, the taller, still performs. Soul and Inspiration is another hit. Also Unchained Melody was a single by a Bobby Hatfield.
You need to react to the Live version of Unchained Melody. I great song written for a 1955 B Movie about a prisoner missing his loved ones. But Bobby Hatfield's cover in 1965 became the standard. The song has since been covered by another 500 or so artists, none as good as Bobby Hatfield's version.
I like your reactions! (especially because you didn't interrupt the song). And hats off to you! Your voice is also quite soulful... and that's why I just subscribed
A very good in depth analysis of this song. Another good song is soul and inspiration or unchained melody. When they were trying to think of a name for themselves a black man in the audience said you brothers are righteous. That's where they got the name. I'm glad you liked them.
Bill Medley’s voice IS nasty…in a good way. see if you can find their version of “I Just Want to Make Love to You.” gives me shivers every time, it sounds so filthy!
This has often been referred to as “Blue eyed soul”. I recommend watching the live performance of “Unchained Melody”, which actually just features Bobby, but will totally amaze you!!
Such amazing talents, both of them. They put out a lot of great music, both as a duo and also in solo efforts, which they liked to do occasionally. Bill is the tall brunette with the deep voice; Bobby is the blond tenor (or counter-tenor?) They were not actually brothers. They re-named themselves after playing a set at club near a Marine base - a Marine, who was black, called out, "That was righteous, brothers!" Along with their hits as a duet, check out Bobby's solo rendition of "Unchained Melody" - MAKE SURE to do the live version from 1965 (Andy Williams Show) - considered one of the finest live performances ever. You really get treated to his amazing vocal range (4 or maybe 5 octave range, I think) in that song. "Ebb Tide is another of his great solos-you really should give it a listen.
This was live. One take. No Autotune. These guys were the real deal.
Their voices complement each other so well. Their harmonies are perfect.
I'll tell you, if you didn't know it already, that line "I'd get down on my knees for you" is a heart melter. Any lady who can withstand that one is ice.

That's how my husband got me back. While begging me to love him again. I felt so sorry for him, I had to give him another chance.
No autotune, no pyrotechnics, no overt sexuality, no frantic "dancers." Just stillness & talent. You could either sing...or not. It was a great time!
💯
At the end of an early live performance, someone stood up and shouted "That's righteous, brother" ... and that was when they decided to call themselves that.

They are not real brothers. Bobby Hatfield passed some years ago. Bill Medley, the taller, still performs. Soul and Inspiration is another hit. Also Unchained Melody was a single by a Bobby Hatfield.
And don't forget "Rock and Roll Heaven".
This was 1964, I was 16 at the time, this song by them was and still is the most played single on TV and Radio of ever song from 1964 to date in 2021.
I was 15 and remember their songs being played all the time.
Early on they were singing at a club and some black customers shouted that their music was "righteous brother". That is how they got the name.
Next reaction for them
Yes!, the live version!
The live version!
cette chanson vraiment magnifique , nous fait vibré jusqu'au frisson !...
Great reaction! ❤️
I like your reactions! (especially because you didn't interrupt the song). And hats off to you! Your voice is also quite soulful... and that's why I just subscribed
It was wonderful to see how much you enjoyed their performance. Thank You. It was so genuine. Thank you.
🙏🏽🙏🏽
A very good in depth analysis of this song. Another good song is soul and inspiration or unchained melody. When they were trying to think of a name for themselves a black man in the audience said you brothers are righteous. That's where they got the name. I'm glad you liked them.
Love this song, sad but beautiful. Righteous Brothers, are awesome singers. Thank you Rad.
Thanks for watching 🙏🏽
It literally takes less than a second to subscribe, c'mon folks give Rad some love! It doesn't cost you anything!
מדהים❤❤❤
they said after one song someone from the audience yelled , That's Righteous Brother , and the name stuck
Bill Medley’s voice IS nasty…in a good way. see if you can find their version of “I Just Want to Make Love to You.” gives me shivers every time, it sounds so filthy!
Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the greatest husband-wife songwriting team ever!
Blue eyed soul
Great reaction! So many people miss that opening lyric and it’s so good. You’re going to like all of their music.
I love your channel I’m new I like how soothing and chill your voice is. It relaxes me.
