@afr malatesta I saw dozens of Reacts (mostly darker skin, 20-40 year olds) of some fave '60s, '70s "white" artists for 3 reasons: 1. to know songs are for the hearts of those they touch 2. see how timeless & still relevant great songs are 3. to get a feel for our struggles, sacrifices, pain & death as we fought for our freedoms & others' (in OUR words not revised history or Google), Civil Rights, Equal Pay, 18 year olds to Vote (they couldn't vote but had to fight), more. Our exhausted, shell-shocked soldiers came home from Vietnam to MORE chaos, violence, riots, shootings, and treated as disgusting scum after losing limbs, friends, relationships, and even their own minds in a confusing war that served no purpose (until the dust settled decades later; we're still learning). Stay honest and sincere always MRM...I know a few will react negatively to my saying so...but most WHITES really don't care about race/skin color and such...and frankly Blacks do. Which is fine...but I think it is pretty true that Whites are less "racial" [forget "racist"].
Rev. King was assassinated 2 days after I was born...and I think he would be thrilled that most whites and most people don't fixate on race. Some would say - "well that's easy enough for white folks...you don't have to deal with being a minority". Frankly it is BS...as Morgan Freeman often says..."you stop referring to me or thinking of me as a Black man....and I stop thinking of or referring to you as being White". That is how real racism ends.
Just always be genuine and fair to others...and good people will always respect and appreciate you and others for it. Those who don't/won't? They aren't worth your time or though...
      Keep on keeping' on, sir!

I could never understand why black people were surprised that whites could sing soul. Thank you for explaining that! I did not understand how insular the black community was re music but now I understand why there are so many black reactors are now finding the music we have taken for granted. It is also interesting that this did not happen in the non-black communities. It was not the audience that didn’t want to hear racial artists, it was the radio owners. The audience demanded it and eventually broke that wall down. So I thought everyone was listening to everything. Wow.

I get it. As a child, you listen to what's around you. My family played R&B and Gospel at home. I saw mostly Pop and Rock on TV. Variety (Comedy skits and Music) shows were all the rage and how the public saw artists and bands before music videos. Radio played a wider range of music. America's Top 40 radio show played the hits of multiple types that sold best weekly. This is how I learned about Rock artists and Easy Listening Artists like Barry Manilow, KISS, Kansas, Styx, Queen, Eagles etc. Commercials selling music collections by K-Tel and Time Life exposed me to song samples as well. As you stated, station owners and programmers, and now sponsors dictate what is played. Plain brown wrapped music is commonly sent to get stations to play music that could cross genres. Bee Gees did it to get play on Black radio when their style changed. White artists like Queen (Another One Bites The Dust), Toto (Georgie Porgy, 99), Boz Skaggs (The Lowdown), Wild Cherry (Funky Music), Dr. Hook (Sharing the Night) just to name a few. Tom Jones, Righteous Brothers, Hall and Oates, George Michael, KC and the Sunshine Band were others. On the other side Dobie Gray, Ray Charles, and Charlie Pride were Black artists who thrived in Country music which like R&B was predominantly one race. These are examples of the effects of culture, programming, and unfortunately biases people innately have. Looks can be deceiving! My ears take in all sounds and a 10,000 CD collection is proof. Great music is simply, great music.

You rarely hear a love song anymore. I'm older, but grew up listening to music from the 1920's and forward. I inherited a 1923 Victrola and a stack of records dating back to at least 1918. I also have 78's, 33's, 45's, cassettes and discs. My parents had music from both black and white artists and once a month they would literally roll up the rug and we would dance. It taught us to appreciate all genres of music, and even though there were some genres for which we didn't care, we were able to appreciate the talent and hard work each artist put in to their creation.

Thanks, MRM, and India Reacts, and TOO SUSHI for building the bridges. We have far more in common than we have differences (race-wise). I love watching reaction videos, and most of them are black reactors. Because of the things you mentioned about the music you grew up with, many of these reactors are giving honest reactions. I love that you, and almost all I watch really like the music I grew up with. I grew up listening to R&B, Soul, Motown, as well as rock in many forms, old time country, a very wide range of music. With the advent of RAP, there began a much greater divide in how I listened. I found the new music had lyrics that brought me down, denigrated both the artist and the audience. At almost the same time I met Jesus, and discovered a whole new world of music that was very uplifting. (Having said that I still know more RAP than most of my kids). I have followed or watched every one of the people in this video. Check out fish out of water (very analytical), the Mathews family, jbleathel, (young guy on a musical journey, you can watch him grow before your eyes), Jamel_AKA_Jamel, He is a very enjoyable man, you can see his personality in the first 10 sec. Loves good music too. I would love to talk to you sometime, There is a world of good music going back further than you have gone, I would like to see you hear. Yours in Jesus, Richard

I have to agree. And in regards to reactor vids...Jamel is great...Sushie is also. I've seen all the others in this vid...and have particularly liked watching them react to the Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones and Bee Gees...jaws drop...eyes close and heads/bodies sway...or eyes go wide! I never actually thought I would enjoy "reaction" videos. But especially now with all the divisive bullshit being front and center...and I do consider it bullshit, because with George Floyd for example...has ANYONE not been appalled and condemned it?? Nope...so what is going on other than an excuse to rage, loot, burn, etc.
There is nothing to "protest" when everyone agrees!
Watching these reactions reaffirms that great music and talent is colorless...and it is cool to see people exposed to various types/genres they really haven't been.
I can't tell you how much I like watching some of the kids see this "old stuff"...almost universally you hear "wow/damn...so smooth...so much talent...the words tell a story, that's cool...etc...our music now doesn't usually mean or say much...this old school stuff was better...and no gimmicks/auto tune...they actually could sing!."
      I love it :)

This is why you are my favorite reacter. I love how you explain things and i feel you're open to seeing things from all sides. I'm 62 and I found out inn my later years that singers back in those days of this song whether they be black or white met together and learned from each other their way of singing and put it inn with their music. That's why you had alot of what I call cross singing back then. I felt like you when I was younger and after hearing songs that i loved on the radio and then saw them on the tv I was shocked they were black singers because to me they sounded white. So you see it's on both slides but thank God under Him we are not a color but souls joined together through Him. Keep up the good work.

As far as music, the 1960's broke quite a few barriers. We young'ins didn't care what color the singer was. I was blessedm starting with gospel music as my family were gospel singers. Even in the late '50's as a child we congregated no matter the color and sang gospel in each others Churches. We kids didn't know what segregation was as we all went to school together, visited each others homes, lived near each other and parents worked together. Can you imagine the shock that a child would endure when they moved to another area and encountered racism? I never understood it. Then came the 60's and Motown was one of the best things to happen to music as we were all exposed to black artists and groups.

I had never thought of the Righteous Brothers sounding like black artists, probably because I grew up listening to the music of my parents and grandparents, and it was a mash up of a bit of everything. Yet when I listen to the qualities of the voices, the emotion the way they sang, I absolutely get it. What I love about music is it is unifies people. I was raised on Country. My dad's car radio never moved from the country station. It was years before i knew charlie Pride was black. All I heard was a talented man singing a song that I related to. You are right, until you get older and broaden your experiences you get locked into a specific train of thought. By the time I found out the Charlie was a black man, I was surprised, but pleasantly so. It reinforced what my broaden experience had taught me about the real world. People are people who may bring different experiences, but we still share things, for example the love of music.

DENVEROUTDOORMAN, he is? I guess that’s why Clive Davis asked him to sing with Aretha Franklin which won them a Grammy. And I guess he’s so much of a wimp that he won American music award’s top honor as R&B singer of the year. I don’t think Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Smokey Robinson Ray Charles, would have asked him to perform duets if he was such a wimp. Interesting! George Michael is the definition of blue eyed soul.

I get what you're saying about growing up with distinctly different music genres with different communities and different expectations when hearing it. I know of the Black gentleman, who sang country, that you mentioned. I thought he did okay and I am only going by his singing, not color. I enjoyed watching you watch yourself. Your reaction to yourself was funny. I personally hate hearing myself on a recording. I don't sound anything like I sound to myself, as when others hear me. Loved this video. Stay Safe. Not only reacting to reactions, but reacting to your own reaction too. If you want to make reactions to reactions a 'thing', you should definitely try India reacting to Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey. She's quite keen (let's say) on his voice, and as somebody said in the comments "When a Black woman starts that church rocking.. you GOT her!!!" :-D

I always appreciate your straight talk, MRM. It's amazing to me how insular our different communities have gotten. I'm a Gen Xer who grew up in a musical home and I remember there were no boundaries in regard to skin hue or genre, good music was good music. I grew up listening to everything, and I mean everything. Muddy Waters, Charley Pride, Flatt & Scruggs, Carole King, Elvis, Blood Sweat & Tears, Broadway show tunes, BB King, the Righteous Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk, Earth Wind & Fire, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Glenn Miller, Three Dog Night, all sorts of artists from Motown, Stax, Muscle Shoals, and Chess, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, you name it. I remember when I was a kid my daddy got one of those old cylinder record players from an aunt who passed on and left it to him, with a ton of the old cylinder records, and I heard ragtime, folk songs, ancient jazz, some amazing stuff from the turn of the 20th century. My friends in school, black and white, loved all kinds of music, just as I did. It really saddens me that so many people choose their music these days according to color or country. I'm 53 now, and am still listening to everything, well, except music that makes me feel bad or is soulless, which is a lot. Here in the last few years I have found Bradio, a Japanese funk band, The Warning, a 3 piece family (3 sisters) metal band from Mexico, old favorites like Darius Rucker (formerly of Hootie & the Blowfish) who now is an established country singer, and The Interrupters, a wonderful punk/ska band whose singer sounds like Joan Jett.

lol, I (not black person) have those same reactions when I hear these artists, as you correctly pointed out. "Blue eyed soul" The Righteous Brothers were where the term came from and not remotely surprising as it was a black sailor in 1962 gave them the name Righteous Brothers. Obviously as evidenced by the age of the song chosen, Blue eyed soul has been around a long time. Music execs have intentionally kept it under wraps for fear black listeners wouldn't buy the records if they knew they weren't black singers. For example Teena Marie had to sue to get her face on the cover of her 2nd album. Sadly, sometimes it's just white people with R&B beats and manufactured harmonies, but for some artists (and it shows) the soul comes from inside, not outside. I fell hard for R&B after hearing Walk away from love for the first time at 10, and I became the wrong kind of popular because of it. Blue eyed soul artists made me feel less alone and made me feel like I wasn't as odd growing up. Thankfully the world eventually caught up.

This was wild I seen al those reactions and and thought it was really cool to see black people react to the Righteous Brothers for the first time, it kind of like watching white people reacting to someone like Marvin Gay for the first time or Sam Cook or Jackie Wilson they are blowed away!!! You are so right when you say soul has no color!!! Like when a black person hears Elvis sings If I can Dream for the first time, they know he singing that from his gut !!! I was never a big flollower of Elvis, but I love that song!!! If you want to hear a really soulful singer check out Timi Youro Make the world go away, her voice is unreal, you would never know that was a white woman, she never had the fame she deserved!!

I lived in W.Virginia out in the country and hung out in a nice quiet bar on top of one of those hills. Nice folks there. And all white, like me, They all loved to listen to Country Charlie Pride on the juke box. They found it hard to believe me when I told them that he was black. His picture wasn't on the cover of his first album and they didn't know. He had such a great voice and sang such good songs that they got over it, but they still found it hard to believe that a black man could sing such good country songs. He broke a lot of barriers.

Being caucasian myself, it is interesting to observe these reactions. Although I'm familiar with this particular song from when I was a kid, I assumed everyone else in my age group and older was as well; via radio, TV, movies, etc. So it's more of an observation of a younger generation being exposed to what I'd call timeless classics.

l'm 72 and l saw the Righteous Brothers live at the L.A. Colosseum along with the Temptations and the Four Tops (l'm white; l went to USC.). We white folks were also stunned to learn the Righteous Brothers were white! We assumed from their (wonderful) sound that they were black. They were given their name (Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield) when they sang at a club in Long Beach frequented by l think Navy people who were largely black. The term for cool by whites at that time was "bitchin"....and for blacks it was "righteous. Of course blacks who liked you would call you brother or sister...So when they sang, the guys said, "That's RIGHTEOUS, BROTHERS!" And the rest is history
