    Thanks for the info! Question, if the video is still in auto, can you still adjust the focus by the manual focus ring on the lens? Like if I'm trying to video one single person walking through the woods and want to keep the individual in focus. Thanks!

    • @spyrosheniadis

      Yes! You can absolutely use the auto video settings, but still manually focus the lens. The auto video function will control the video exposure settings, but you can still change and control focus yourself.

      It can be tough, but fortunately the D3400 has WiFi/Bluetooth and Nikon offers the Snapbridge app for iOS and Android. With the app you can get a live view of what you're recording, and use the app to focus on yourself.

      No I don’t think so. The tripod might be the wrong material. Why would the tripod matter that makes no sense. It’s good for video and trash at audio.

  • @CanadianArchivist

    The first video I took with the D3400 was awful with this camera shooting at 24 frames a second. The subjects were going in and out of focus and the subject was skipping in the frame and looking choppy . BUT I quickly discovered a few things.
    I had large crowds. This was at a Scottish Highland Games in Maxville where there were in excess of 30,000 people. So I had people walking in front of the camera and the auto focus went haywire chasing everything. I had the camera in auto mode and it was the first time I tried a video.
    I found out a few things later on..
    When shooting at 24 frames a second, you should have your shutter speed twice the frame rate. So 24 FPS @ 1/60 second. And while in manual mode with these two settings, you get the rest of your exposure by setting the aperture and ISO. The other thing is metering. Go to spot so it stays with the subject you are following or camera will go in and out of focus with multiple subjects moving around that are closer than your subject as they pass.
    When shooting at 60fps, then the shutter speed should be set at 1/125 of a second.
    So before shooting video remember to set your frame rate then use the shutter speed which should be double the frame rate.
    The second time I tried a video the subject was Powerlifting. So the power lifter didn’t leave a certain fixed area. I put the camera in manual mode. Set the iso at 3200, the aperture was about f/8,. The frame rate was 24fps and shutter speed was 1/60sec. It looked cinematic. The mic built in was set to auto. That one turned out great. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit and splice the video & add graphics.
    This camera has no mic jack.

    i did not know using my flash on movie in nikon D3400? so how should i use my camera flash on night

    • @spyrosheniadis
      @spyrosheniadis  6 років тому

      You can’t use the flash while in movie mode on any camera(including the D3409).
      The flash isn’t designed to be turned on continually for a video recording.
      If you need more light while recording a video I’d suggest using an LED light panel. There are many available and they are not too expensive.
      One I would recommend is the Godox LED 64

    When I hit that record button in my camera, it automatically zooming the frame ? How to turn off this ? What about the focus on objects while shooting, because this camera is not having an auto focus feature ?

    • @spyrosheniadis
      @spyrosheniadis  5 років тому +1

      That zooming of the frame can’t be turned off. That happens because the camera does not use the entire image sensor for recording the video. Due to that, you get a crop, or a zoom on your video as compared to when taking a photo. The only thing you can do is shoot with a wider angle lens to regain the width in your video image.
      Regarding the focus, this would be a case for manually focusing. Since you can’t do it with the camera’s auto focus, the only option is to manually focus.

      Suman Hossain its an external mic
      The d3400 has no input for audio
      You can record externally and match it in post by clapping and making fast burst sounds

    I am having trouble with the camera staying in focus on my subject during video is there any fix for that?

    • @spyrosheniadis
      @spyrosheniadis  6 років тому +1

      There are some things you can do, but there are also going to be limits as to how effective what you do will be.
      The limits are inherent to the camera and its ability to track focus on a moving subject.
      What you can do to help it focus is:
      1. Make sure the subject is well lit. The better the lighting, the easier it is for the camera to focus.
      2. Put the camera into continuous focus mode (if it isn’t already)
      3. Set a single focus point (or a small grouping) and keep that on your subject so the camera is only trying to focus on the subject you want in focus.

    • @spyrosheniadis
      @spyrosheniadis  6 років тому

      You can’t use the on camera flash for recording video. It does not work that way. In order to add light while recording video you need to get an LED panel or some other sort of continuous light source to use.
      This is an example of the kind of light you can use:
      YONGNUO YN300 Air LED Camera Video Light with Adjustable Color Temperature 3200K-5500K for Canon Nikon Pentax Olympas Samsung www.amazon.com/dp/B0157PE1ZC?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

    Using auto atm but will give this video a look soon. Got so many critters to feed not got the time to fiddle.
    One have noticed is the battery life when filming max quality is bad? Am struggling to get 20-30 mins done! Yes could buy 2nd batt but not sure will be getting this camera eventually..am thinking about something with better batt n perhaps a Panasonic (look the best for filming nature...my opinion..but more £)
    Lucky am testing this camera atm! (I stand to be corrected ofc)

    • @spyrosheniadis
      @spyrosheniadis  6 років тому

      If you're looking for a camera to shoot video, this isn't the best option. It can do it but it's not ideal. Depending on your budget a Panasonic (like the g7) or a canon rebel (like the t4i (or 5 or 6 or 7 i) would be better.

    Some points to take into consideration.
    1-After you press the LV buttom you cannot change settings the aperture, setup the camera completely before using the LV buttom.
    2-Never use continuous autofocus in movies, its really bad.
    3-use a tripod or be prepared to use software stabilizer after the video is done(wich crops part of the video).
    4-camera has no microphone imput and autofocus makes bad sounds.
    5-screen is very bad and small for manual focus. You can focus before starting the video but after that forget about the autofocus.
    6-shuttle speed per second should always be twice the frame rate. Thats 1/60 for 30p and 1/50 for 24p.
    7-Never use this camera for bloggin yourself You will end up with horrible videos.
    -Other than that you can get professional results with this or any DSLR. But its not easy.
