- Today I cover some of the most useful Nikon D3400 Lenses. All of the lenses come from Nikon so you know they will work well with your D3400. All of these are some of the best lens for Nikon D3400 and will produce great photos. This is some photography information I wish I knew when I was starting out so I just wanted to share it with you today.
My hope is that this helps a beginner photographer learn about crop sensor lens options available for the Nikon D3400 and other cameras like it.

Which lens do you think is the best for the Nikon D3400? I understand that this is something that depends on what you plan to photograph, but I am interested in your thoughts.

You also forgot to mention that the 18-55mm has MACRO capabilities. Which works well and wouldn't look much different from the shots you took with the 40 mm in good light. You can give it a try and see.

my fav is the 55-200 mm. It came with my D3400. Though i have recently bought a macro/wide angle lens and a 40 mm micro lens. 55-200 as you point out is awesome for wild life. I have even photographed a passing helicopter. The blades of the helicopter were very clear. Thank you for your video have enjoyed it.

Those are some great cameras. I moved to Canon now, but I miss the RAW files that Nikon produces. Maybe someday I will switch back to Nikon. Thank you for sharing.

hey just wanted to let you know , the d3400 has a crop sensor. So basically, the 35mm acts like a 50 mm , and 50 acts like a 75mm. Not exact numbers , but yeah hope that makes it easier for you to buy a lens

The lens I currently use is NIKON DX AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm (shooting sports photography)
That is a good lens. I used that for an airshow a few years back and got some of my favorite photos with it. Thank you for sharing.

Wonderful lens and I love using them. Since I transitioned to a Canon as my primary system, I had to purchase them again, and it was a no brainer for me. I will admit I use my Tamron 24-70 2.8 more than any of my lens, but I know what I am going to get when I put the 35mm and 50mm on every time.

Just stumbled upon your videos. Great stuff. I have a d3400. I like to take pics of insects and things up close like that. Would you recommend that macro lens?
Kameron thanks for the comment! I would actually recommend a 90mm or 100mm Macro lens for insects. Since they are so small you want more reach. If you use the 40mm Macro I shared in this video, you would only have an 60mm focal equivalency. With a 90mm or 100mm you would end up with about a 135mm or 150mm focal equivalency when you put it on the D3400. Another option you can explore is extension tubes which allows you to use any lens to get closer to a subject.

Those are good lenses. You can capture a lot of different things with that focal range.
Hey I'm from Mexico and I really enjoy your videos... I have a D3400 with a 50mm and a telephoto 70-300, Is it worth spending in a 35mm for indoor photos or should I go for a 20mm? Don't know if I should buy two-step down lenses because I dont know if there's a lot of difference between a 35mm and a 50mm.
Sergio thank you for the feedback and great questions! Depending on what you photograph you should choose a lens accordingly. A 20mm lens is going to give you an equivalent range of 30mm since there is a 1.5x zoom factor due to the sensor. This focal length is great for story telling and environmental image creation. The 35mm lens is going to give you about 52.5mm equivalent range. If you are doing portraits this could be a great lens. your current 50mm is really giving you more of a 75mm focal length. For me I personally would go with the 20mm as it will be the most drastic change to your overall focal range available in your kit.

What is the that bulky piece under your d3400?
That is a quick release plate to my tripod and camera strap from peak design. In the video it was attached to my Nikon D610, but you can attach it to the D3400 as well if you wanted to.
Which lens depends on the needs as you state. But lenses are an investment and in the case you ever move on to fullframe your apsc lenses will collect dust. Try to get as most as you can fullframe lenses if your budget allows that of course. Only real stellar apsc lens is the Nikon 17-55 f2.8. And sigma has some great options to as the 18-35 and the 50-100. The Nikon 18-55.. I had 3 of them but they all broke eventually. Ok they cost 100 bucks or so but the D3400 is a 24mp camera so cheapskate lenses will be outresolved easily.

Which lens will give me more zoom then the 18-55 but less than the 70-300. Often times the 55 is not enough but the 300 is too much and I am unable to get a wider range with it. Thanks for any help.

I would like to know if Tamron 150-600mm is compatible with a Nikon D3400
The lens is compatible, it will just have a 1.5x magnification. So on any Nikon Crop Sensor camera like the D3400, that lens would be more like 225-900mm. This could be great for sports or wildlife so don't think of it as a bad thing, just know you will get a different focal length than what is written on the lens.
@Free Will Photos what would you suggest lens wise for events such as rodeo, fair, and things?
If you can get close to the things you want to photograph then a 24-70mm lens would work well. If you have to stay far away, then a 70-200 would be better. If you are asking which of the 5 lens that I recommend in this video, then I have to say the best option is the 70-300mm. The best thing I can tell you is that you should choose a lens that fits your shooting style such as do you like photos with a lot of things in them? If so, then you should choose a lens that is between 24mm and 50mm. If you want a tighter image, then you should get a 85mm lens and above. If you can't move freely around your subject, then you should look for a zoom option that fits your image style. I hope this helps.

I usually use sports auto mode in a low light setting for my daughter's dance productions on an inside stage. I need to take multiple pictures in bursts and moving quickly from one side of the stage to the other. Also in blue and pink low-lighting at times. Someone had mentioned a 18-200 lens might work. Do you have a recommendation for this situation?
Depending on your budget there are a few lens I would recommend:
1. Nikon 18-140 f/3.5-5.6 - $250
2. Nikon 24-120 f4 - $1096
3. Tamron 18-400 f/3.5-6.3 - $700
4. Nikon 18-200 f3.5-5.6 - $650
5. Tamron 70-200 f2.8 - $1300
The last lens on this list will give you the best low light results, but all of these are good for the type of photography you are describing. With the other lens, you will need to shoot at a higher ISO, but there are some great programs that help eliminate noise in photos on the market now if you end up with a lot of grain in your images. ON1 does a pretty good job with images up to about 4000, assuming it was exposed properly. If it was shot at 4000 ISO and underexposed, then you will have a lot of color noise issues.

What's best for portraits with multiple subjects?
If you have multiple subjects, then you should go with something that is 16mm to 35mm. Since this camera has a 1.5x crop that would give you a range of 24mm to 53mm. If you can find a lens with a zoom capability that may give you some good value for the price since you would be able to adjust as space permits.

Lightdow 420-800mm F/8.3-16 Manual Zoom Super Telephoto Lens + T-Mount Nikon. I have this lens on order will arrive around February, is very cheap super telephoto lens. $150 on amazon. I am a beginner, so your thoughts on this lens would be helpful. Thankyou.
Hey Garry, Thank you for the comment. I personally have not used the lens, but it seems like it would work if you are just looking to practice some telephoto photography. At the price, I would question the optic quality. You will need to use a tripod since your lowest shutter speed would have to be around 800/s to 1600/s just to reduce camera shake handheld. That would also mean a really high ISO and more than likely a high Aperature to get things in focus. With that said putting in on a Tripod would allow you to slow down your shutter speed and lower your ISO. Your aperture would still need to be high I think to get an image in focus. What type of things do you plan to photograph with the lens and what type of camera body will you be putting it on?
@@FreeWillPhotos i have a nikon d3400. it is the only camera body i have. In addition i have a micro 40 mm lens two kit lenses and a wide angle/macro lens. I do have a tripod, i have been watching a number videos on photography. I did very briefly study photography when film and darkrooms were the norm.
@@garrylovett9486 I see, just keep in mind that you have a 1.5x zoom with any lens you attach to your camera, which means you are looking at about 630mm on the short end of the lens and 1000mm on the long end. I think this could be a good lens if you are doing some outdoors work or maybe Astro Photography. I hope this lens works out for you.
hi! I have nikon D3400 as my main dslr camera . My question is , what lens do you prefer for a group picture like for example a graduation photo on a stage that can take all the subject by not stepping backward to far.
That is a good question... Without seeing the space and knowing how far you are able/wanting to stand I would suggest using a 10mm lens. This will give you a focal distance of about 16mm and this works well for most indoor events. I will caution you to keep people in the center of your frame so you don't get odd warping. If you keep people about 1-2 inches away from the edge of the frame, you wont distort them too much. Here are some lens that I would recommend:

Hey Anthony thank you for the question. I will start by saying I am not a Astro Photographer, so please verify what I am going to recommend with other content creators that are more educated in the genre of photography. I would recommend a lens with an f2.8 maximum aperture I think you can get away with an F4, you will just end up shooting at longer shutter speeds. For a focal length, I think anything that is 11-35mm would work well. You may want something a little more zoomed in like a 85mm if you don't plan to crop in post-production. If you could only go with one lens I suggest the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens. This is a really wide angle option and it allows for both manual and auto focus. You will need to crop however depending on the location you are taking the photo from. But I also think you can get away with using a 35mm to start also.

Thanks! The simple answer is yes the 50mm would be a great option to allow detailed shots of the car. The actual focal length would be 82mm on the D3400 because of the 1.5x crop factor. So if you want to get some really cool shots of the car emblem, lights, or other finishings, this would be a great lens. Now if you want something that could be used more like a 50mm lens, I would recommend a 35mm instead. Links to both are listed below.

@@reverse2nd63 No problem, the 35mm would be a 52mm equivlent on your camera. This would give you the filed of view that you are looking for. The only way to get something that is exactly 50mm is to find a lens that is 33mm's but I don't think there is anything like that on the market. You are correct though, that the 35mm lens will be zoomed in quite a bit.
The other option is to find a used Full Frame DSLR like a D610, and then you can get the 50mm 1.8 or I would recmmend a 24-70mm f2.8. That combination would cost any where from $900 - $1500, but you would have wide to short telephoto ranges at f2.8. Full frame cameras give you the exact focal length that is on the lens so it would be more simple to find the focal length you really want without having to do the 1.5x crop factor conversion.

@@reverse2nd63 No need to apologize, because these are all great questions, and camera manufatcuters don't do a good job at explaining these things. The simple answer is that a DX lens does not have the crop factor built into it. The sensor size is what makes the crop factor through the lens attched. So even the DX 35mm lens is still a 35mm piece of glass. Based on how your camera sees through the lens is the field of view that you get.
The difference between a DX and FX lens is how much vignetting happens when you use the lens. Since the sensor is smaller on a crop sensor camera, manufacturs design the rear element of the lens to work more efficently with crop sensor cameras. Issues like defraction can be more obvious with a Crop sensor camera using a FX lens since the rear element allows more light to reach the sensor. This only happens at high f-stops like 16 and beyond, which is why most people suggest FX lens for crop sensor bodies with the caveat not to go above f16 if you don't have to.

Depending on your style of photography a 50mm or 35mm 1.8 or lower aperture would be recommended. If you tell stories with you images, then the 35mm will be the best, because you can include more of the surrounding area. If you like a more casual feel to the image then a 50mm would be better. I personally lean toward the 50mm side. With all of that said, if you can not get close to the subject, then I recommend the Tamron 35-150 2.8-4 lens. It will allow you to zoom, but you do loose a stop of light. The D3400 works well in low light situations, so you can push the ISO to 1600-3200 and still get some nice images. Just my recommendations, but it really does matter on what you want in your images.

Are you looking for a prime lens? If so I suggest a 20mm lens. If you are looking for a zoom I recommend a 15-35mm. Both would do well. Another option is to take a 35mm lens and create a panorama photo by stitching 2-3 images together

I am using the lens that came with the camera. I want to be able to take wide angle shots. I'm in Atlanta and I want to take skyline photos. I also would like to take good sharp indoor photos of people in front of a black backdrop.
I think the best option would be to get a 16mm lens. This will give you some wide angle capability but may be too wide for portraits. So I would recommend a 35mm for your portraits and a 16mm for your wide shots.

@@salimthebarefootsage8182 I wouldn't recommend an 18-55 because it does not have a good apperature value. You will outgrow the capabilities of the lens quickly. It is good if you are on a tight budget, and depending on how you use it, you will get some good images, but it will not be as sharp as the lens I mentioned earlier.

@@salimthebarefootsage8182 I would recommend the Nikon 16-80mm lens. here is a link to one on amazon: amzn.to/3OoyclN The term fisheye means that the lens is going to capture a lot of its surroundings and the edges of the image will be a little distorted. I wouldn't recommend that lens because it is not what most people like in their images. I hope this helps.
what is the best lens for like low light gym videos
That is a hard question to answer. It truly depends on how close you can get to your subject. If you are able to get close I would recommend a 35mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.8. If you are far from your subject, then I recommend a zoom lens, that has a range of 100-300mm. The 70-300 is good,but that is going to require you to increase your ISO. Now if this is just for family video, then that may be just fine. I hope this helps.
I'm looking to shoot jewelry. want a 1500mm macro for my Nikon.will be using stacking and 3" x tube? about a 2. something
Im not sure their is a 1500mm macro lens on the market, but most people use 100mm lens for jewelry. You could also use a 90mm lens which would work great.

I would recommend a 50mm to 85mm lens depending on how close you can get to the sport. This will give you a 75mm to 107mm equivalent focal range. If you want something wider i recommend a 16mm to 24mm lens
Will a pancake lens work on my d3400?... Are these AF?
All of the lens I mentioned in this video are AF Lenses, but I am not aware of a pancake lens available for this camera. I think that is only for Canon.
No vr buy used 24 to 85vr just as sharp does 35 mm ect ect better by far
I will admit the 35mm does not have VR, but based on the focal length you probably won't see too much camera shake for photos. Videos may be a little different. But thank you for the feedback.
I have all these lenses. Most "professionals " say that you shouldn't put fx lenses on a DX Crop camera
All of these lens are great! As for what professionals say, I wouldn’t put too much stock into it. That is an opinion which could be valid in some use cases, but for most people, you can absolutely use FX lens on a crop sensor camera.
Also is there any auto stabilizer options for d3400 recording? My videos always come out shaky when not using a tripod

Internal to the camera, there is not any stabilization, but you could purchase a gimble and that would help out a lot. I would suggest looking for an 18-300mm lens or the Tamron 16-300 lens. This should get you where you want to be focal wise. Many of these lenses also comes with Image stabilization so it will help with the shaky footage that you were asking about earlier. You could also try a 70-200mm, but these lens are usually a little more expensive than you may want.

Mine came with the 18-55 kit lens. I find it very versatile and works well with both photos and video.
The 50mm is phenomenal and a must have for anyone.
I have the AF-P DX 70-300mm f:/4.5-6.3G ED VR. This is my favourite lens for sports. I do minor hockey which can be a challenge. You are right about the iso, but I haven’t had to go higher than ISO 3200 in most places. The variable aperture causes a few issues but I rarely go to 300mm. Most around 70 to 190mm. I do have to use Exposure value to offset the cameras metering for the bright reflective surface. I found it more difficult shooting a late afternoon baseball game as the sun set because my light isn’t constant like an arena so I did have to boost iso.
I like the thoughts on the 35mm 1.8 it’s a lens I don’t have. I also considered the 85mm 1.8.

Andrew this is great feedback. I love that you are overcoming the challenges the camera gives you and instead of just getting a new one. ISO is always a subjective thing, but you are right in areas where the light is constant you may not need to go beyond 3200. The late-night baseball games do pose a challenge, but once the lights come on you should have nearly constant lighting. None the less, you may want to look into getting a 150-600. I don't own one, but hope to get one someday. I hear they a great for sports and wildlife.

I am not sure how you are attempting to transfer the files, so I will offer a few options.
1. Ensure the drive you are transferring to is configured to read/write
2. Ensure the lock switch on your SD card is not pushed up. (This is a small plastic piece on your SD Card)
3. Ensure you have enough space on the hard drive you are transferring to.
I hope 1 of these solutions help.

@@amritabhowmick7876 Yes you can. You will need an adaptor to attach your SD card to the iPad and then you just tap and drag to the files app. Any USB-C hub with an SD Card reader on it should work.

Firstly, the plural of lens is 'lemses'.
I think you should be clear about the type of camera you're using. The Nikon D3*** series are a group od DX, or cropped sensor cameras and that should be clear from the start.
The other thing that is not clear in this video is the 50mm lens used. Is this the 50mm FX mount lens? If so, then it will work on the DX cameras, however it will not be working at a 5omm focal length. This would give an equivalent focal length of 70 to 75mm is used on a DX camera.
This video needs delting and remade with full and accurate information. Right now, it is poor.

Sadly I think you missed the information about which camera I am referring to, because the title of the video and the thumbnail outline the camera being used.
I have no plan to take this video down because it has helped a lot of people. I will however do better to provide all of the information I can in future videos. It is not easy to create content, but hopefully, you were able to gain some information.
