    In this Nikon D3400 video from Camerawize we look at video.
    THE NIKON D3400 VIDEO SET UP
    The best VIDEO SET UP for your Nikon D3400 is a first look at the D3400 and tells you all about this camera and shows sample images and video.
    The Nikon D3400 is an entry-level DSLR camera designed by Nikon for people who are moving up from bridge cameras or from compact cameras and whilst it takes excellent stills it also shoots superb video. One of the selling points of this camera is that it shoots Full HD video which is 1080 at 60 frames per second, which is really very impressive, and gives you a very smooth and very high quality video reproduction. One of the downsides however is that it doesn't have an external microphone socket and that is very much in common with most cameras in this category - though ironically its predecessor, the Nikon D3300, does have an external microphone socket and I would say that if you're going to shoot a lot of video, which will require a lot of sound when you're actually recording the video - perhaps you are doing interviews or you are recording bands - then you might want to look at the D3300 rather than this camera.
    On the other hand one of the things that I really do like about this camera is that it has a lot of effects and modes, so that you can be quite creative with the way that you shoot stills and those effects are translated through to videos too which is really quite fun. So you can have a lot of fun with photo illustration which shoots a sort of comic effect but in video. You can have fun with the miniature effect which shoots a sort of time lapse but within the miniature effect option, and you can also have some great fun which I found with toy camera effect which gives a really OLDE WORLDE type of shot through video with vignette and quite unsaturated color. This Nikon D3400 video from Camerawize is one of a series, please look to for the others..
    Now if you are shooting at a given frame rate it is recommended that your shutter speed is twice that frame rate. So if you are shooting at 30 frames per second, the shutter speed should be about 160th. Likewise if you're shooting at 60 then your frame rate should be about 125th. You do have some flexibility here it's not carved in stone. You could easily go up to 1/200th or 1/400th if that's what you wanted without the video suffering too much. In terms of keeping equality as good as possible then you'd like the ISO to be as low as possible and the aperture, of course, will control your depth of field. The three elements here, ISO, aperture and shutter speed can all be changed when you're in the manual setting. Let me show you how. The odd one out, in a sense, is aperture because you cannot change the aperture when you are actually shooting the video, so you need to pre-set your aperture and you can only do that outside of Live View and if you are outside of Live View then you can see the aperture when you are in the back screen and you can change that by pressing the exposure button on the top and using the main dial to go along to change the aperture either up or down. Now at this point you can also change the ISO and the shutter speed in exactly the same way. You can change the shutter speed by using the main dial on its own and you can change the ISO by looking at the I button and moving across and choosing the ISO and changing it. However you may want to change either the ISO or the shutter speed whilst you are actually shooting the video, in which case you can either use the function button which you have preset to change ISO and use the main dial which will change the ISO, even if you're shooting at the same time. Or you can use the main dial on its own to change the shutter speed. Again even if you're shooting video at the time and the great thing about using the back screen is that you can instantly see the change, in either changing shutter speed or ISO, the image will go lighter or darker. So those are the ways that you can change the shutter speed, the aperture, or the ISO when you are shooting video now just as with stills you can set your picture control as well, and that can really be quite important when you're shooting stills you can set it to be mono or vivid or bright and that can affect the exposure of your pictures.

    Excellent! I actually bought D3500 last year and haven't used video much, but wanted to learn how to do it properly. Not many people explain the aspect of shutter speed, aperture and ISO for video settings like you did here. I originally thought that the camera would figure this all out for me when I am in video mode. Thank you.

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  7 років тому

      There is no particular way to do this. the camera will only record a maximum of 29 minutes or 4GB on the card. At 1080, 25 frames per second it records about 170mb per minute. if you know how much space you have on your card, you could work it out from that. when the space on the card is less than the maximum recording time, the time available will show when you are recording.

      CatzEyes93 that’s one of the easiest parts as you zoom in rotate the zoom lense to adjust it to the mm your at, and read through the instruction manual, but actually do it because no one ever does and that’s why you will get confused, and once you know the basics on how to operate it, turns it to A aperture priority and then finally to manual did that help?

    • @NikonD5200Channel

      ok, this is what I do. when i am setting up, i put a box where i am going to sit and focus the camera on it. then i switch the lens to manual. that way I know that the camera won't wander in and out of focus.the important thing is to keep the aperture fairly narrow. so i shoot manual, 1080x25fps, 1/60th second, f6.7 and 1000 ISO. move back, so that there is a reasonable depth of field, i make sure that the camera is 6-8 feet away.

    Sir, can we actually connect an external mic on Nikon D3400? Is there anyway we can do that as it doesnt have a built in mic jack?

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  5 років тому +1

      No, you cannot connect an external Mic. You have two choices - either rely in the internal Mic, which isn't too bad, or use an external recorder. The advantage of that is that you can get the mic much closer to the sound source. You don't have to spend a lot on a recorder , you can get an app on your mobile phone that will do it. Then you just synchronise the video and sound in the editing software.

    Hi there,
    I am trying to do timelapse with my Nikon D3400. You talked about it, in the beginning, could you please elaborate a bit more.
    How to do it? I had Nikon D90 the intervalometer for that one doesnt work for Nikon D3400.

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  7 років тому

      There is no time-lapse function on the D3400.
      You have two options: the first is to shoot your videos in Miniature Effects. This shoots the video as a time-lapse video and puts it together in the camera to play straight away. However it keeps the miniature effect setting of blurring around the edges. This may not be a problem if your subject is in the middle of the frame, but if you are shooting a landscape and want to catch the moving clouds etc, it isn’t going to work.
      To do this, turn the mode dial round to Effects, then turn the rotate dial until you get the Miniature Effects option and then press the video start button.
      By far the best way is to get an intervalometer. This plugs into your D3400 and allows you to operate the shutter remotely. It also allows you to fire the shutter a certain number of times at set intervals. They are not expensive, just make sure they will operate a Nikon D3400.
      Here is one, for example: www.amazon.co.uk/Andoer®-Viltrox-Intervalometer-Control-Shutter-As-Shown/dp/B00N3JQW7U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1510569209&sr=8-2&keywords=Time+Lapse+Intervalometer++nikon
      When shooting, you should be on manual mode and also manual focus - to prevent the camera changing the exposure or refocusing during the shoot. Ideally you should try to stay out of live view as this will drain the battery faster. You are going to shoot 25-30 frames for each second of video, so the battery must be fully charged - if you are shooting 15 seconds of video, you will need to take around 450 frames possibly over a period of over an hour.
      The time between each frame depends on what you are shooting, but here is a rough guide:
      Clouds moving very slowly, interval of 10 seconds.
      Clouds moving normally: interval of 5 seconds.
      Clouds moving very fast: interval of 3 seconds.
      People walking down the street: interval of 2 seconds.
      Path of the sun on a clear day, interval of 30 seconds.
      Night landscapes, stars, moon, etc.: interval of 20 to 30 seconds.
      As you can see this is a big commitment, so it is a good idea to do some tests first and plan well. it is worth making sure that you have a large memory card and plenty of room on your computer.
      The software recommended at the moment is Picasa from Google, which you can download for free (please be careful where you get it from). I don’t have it myself, but this video shows you how simple it is to use. ua-cam.com/video/ZuI9dep0dGo/v-deo.html
      I hope that helps. let me know how it works for you!

      @opencanvasih 7 років тому

      WOW..... I am totally pleasantly surprised how much time and care you have taken to answer me.
      You, sir, are an amazing person.
      Actually, I did not ever try to discover anything from the effects dial in the camera.
      Now not just I found about Miniature Effect but also all other effects.
      Nokia D3400 doesn't have any GPS port so the usual intervalometer does not work here. And it doesn't have a wireless function so apps on a smartphone do not work either.
      My option is an expensive one an intervalometer from Nikon which is worth $140 here in Australia.
      I really appreciate your reply.
      I hope people return your kindness with gratitude. thank you

      It depends on how much you know about photography and what you want to photograph. A good basic DSLR camera, like this D3400 or a Canon 1300d/T6 would be a good start if you know the basics. They have the advantage of you being able to change lenses and use off camera flash to widen your experience. With those you can shoot almost anything. If you are a beginner, you might consider a good bridge camera, with a zoom lens. this would allow you to practice and then, once you have decided on what you want to do, you can upgrade accordingly.

      yes the lack of an external Mic socket is annoying. But you can record sound on a separate device - your mobile phone for example - and synchronise it with the video

      No, I am afraid not. Neither of the two sockets on the D3400 will allow you to record sound, even if you had an adaptor.

      bruno ferreira you realise autofocus isn’t really the camera fault quite usually the lense because the d3400 has the same autofocus motor as a lot of Nikon’s posher cameras with auto focus

    Does anybody know how to use the HDMI port on this camera to use a mac as a monitor while recording videos? I want to use this camera to record youtube videos but since the viewfinder lacks mobility, I need some type of external monitor
