@Austin Flowers Russia was bankrupt when he took over. He first had to overcome years of Soviet era neglect and rebuild the economy. Russia does things its own way they’re not western and don’t think like westerners. Neither do they want to.
David Starkey is a very logical thinker. I admire that in him. PUTIN in my opinion does not Trust NATO, you only have to look at its historical deceitfulness. PUTIN might not consider backing down now or ever because of the Westerns own war games. TRUST HAS BEEN BROKEN AS FAR AS PUTIN SEES IT. TO BACK DOWN NOW WOULD BE SEEN AS A LOSS FOR HIS MOTHER LAND. (just my opinion)!
This gentleman is right and what's even worse is he's stating the damn obvious, hence the annoyance in his tone. I have also been saying this to friends and colleagues alike and so far it has been met with raised eyebrows.
I don't know what David means when he says America is not about power - they may not be efficient at diplomacy but they spend more on the military than the next 11 countries China, India, Russia, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Italy, and Australia - combined. Then look at how that compares to how much they pay on education. How can that be taken any other way but power is the only thing they care about and when they need to defend the dollar we will see how serious they are about using it all. Those of us who follow military spending knew that when they increased the military budget after leaving Afghanistan knew they have their sites on bigger fish. The reality is that America likes quagmires because they are so profitable.
He says Americans have abandoned the use of power. Really? When did that come to pass? Or does the use of power only consist in a potentially planet-wiping direct war with a country with the largest nuclear arsenal in the world? The U.S. still believes in the use of power in all its forms. It is as much an empire as any out there, albeit one that might just have peaked. His predictions are quite bold for an analysis so reductive.

@Susanna Marker yes. If eu was such a good organisation then they could offer Ukraine a free trade deal without membership
@@carlallcott4067 Exactly. The EU just wants to get bigger. Why ? It's run on an old german foreign policy model called limited sovereignty, and the Germans have always looked East.
You can win a war by engineering a financial crisis.. The Anglo-Dutch War. The Brits undercut the cost of making ships with help of Dutch designer and made ships three times less and simply bankrupted them? I do not know this is the only sentence I have ever disagreed with from decades of Starkey. I hope he thinks this is a possible exception to his statement.
He also thinks the sanctions are just against credit cards 😂
This is a cracking interview from David. He gave such an interesting argument in regards to our handling of Russia, I don't know if I agree with him 100% or not but I know for sure that I haven't been comfortable with how the West have gone about this mess for years and it is nice to hear somebody speaking so eloquently, so precisely, from a different perspective. No wonder the BBC don't want him anywhere near their broadcasting anymore, lol. All that being said, I know 1 thing David is not correct about - 14:04 whilst I am sure that the general perception in the country is that the men should stay and fight whilst the women and children escape to safety, those young women of Ukraine who do not yet have children to protect are not leaving the virtuous men to fight this battle on their own at all! It has been incredible to witness all the brave young Ukrainian women taking up arms to defend their home alongside the young Ukrainian men!
whilst having done Russian Studies and been there and always been interested in Russian history and culture, i understand Russian concerns, a preemptive invasion is like the US taking concerns about the Southern border and invading Nothern Mexico (done in past of course and seemingly advocated, jokingly, by Trump)
@@vanpallandt5799 but saying it was a preemptive invasion ignores all of the build up. The Coup in 2014 with Western support and funding, the Donbass war between ukranians where those of an ethnic minority were persecuted and killed, the Minsk agreement and this isn't even all of the build up. Its not like russia woke up one day and decided to march into Ukriane.
@@GromDarkwater I am sure Hitler said the same, butty. And so did the USSR when it stabbed Poland in the back. Even if it were accepted that Russia could take over the Donbas, whats Putins proposal for the rest of Ukraine - demilitarise and danazify? Where is there a genuinely demilitarised country in the world of any size beyond a very small island - Iceland? in NATO from 1949. Panama and Costa Rica - large non military security forces aka de facto militaries (tell me when you saw civil police with 80mm mortars). A puppet regime put in by Kremlin is going to be accepted in Lviv, Rivne and Lutsk? - be serious
@@vanpallandt5799 Putin will offer Lvov to Poland, Transcarpathia will go back to Hungary. South and East will be Russian. A small Ukrainian puppet state around Kiev similar to Belarus
@@JesterEric The Soviets took almost a decade to defeat the UPA in Western Ukraine. I think zero possibility that either will accept that territorial offer and what is Putin going to do, threaten to nuke them. Poland if you recall just offered its Mig 29s and though that was declined by US, it shows their attitude. Its Lviv btw to the inhabitants.
A clear voice in a muddled world.
Rationality on display
Dr David Starkey is a brilliant geezer and he is %100 correct.
Talking sense as always, David Starkey. Thank you. I wish the politicians would listen to him.
fan girl.
With all due respect, both of the gentlemen have complete lack of understanding of Russian motives. Cheers from Russia.
Isn't this called virtue signalling by all the politicians. Well done Starkey, good to hear common sense
I like listening to David Starkey he knows what’s really going on
So Starkey has again been proved right.
Brilliant as always - Dr Starkey
Why anyone would use the word 'Churchillian' in the same sentence as Alexander 'Boris' Johnson is beyond my comprehension.
Fat and privately educated.
That's about it.
I thought that was strange also .And the reference to Zelensky was a bit odd. Zelensky was a comedian previously and is hardly qualified to be a leader of a country
@@deisegirl4123 Johnson was a journalist who got sacked for lying.
He's tip top.
Churchill helped wreck this country
Excellent. Very insightful imo.
What a breath of fresh air.
Thank GOD... someone is talking sense I never thought that I would would back up David Starkey... Thank GOD, I thought I was the only one.... The bloody West is Bonkers...
Putin was head of the KGB in Eastern Germany and must have a very high I.Q.
He's also one of Klaus's young leaders. Is this really a young leader vs young leader conflict, or something else?
He was also a taxi driver. Nothing wrong with it just saying.
@Stop Putin killing kids in Ukraine 🇺🇦 But Putin is a billionaire and richer than any western leader. I’m sure politicians here wold love to be rich at the public’s expense.
@Austin Flowers Russia was bankrupt when he took over. He first had to overcome years of Soviet era neglect and rebuild the economy. Russia does things its own way they’re not western and don’t think like westerners. Neither do they want to.
Well said David.
Perhaps you should mention that Pakistan is backing Russia as we are paying them £350 million in foreign aid..
I can't stand Starkey, he makes my skin crawl but he's bang on here. I applaud his real and unbiased take here 👏
David Starkey is a very logical thinker.
I don't know what it is like in Russia, but if there is none of this western PC there. Seems better then the decaying West in my eyes.
If wales tried to join a military alliance with Russia and then pointed ballistic missiles at London, Birmingham and Manchester what would happen!
There’s no threat of England invading Wales. It’s a complex issue though.
@@mikecheq45 England have invaded Wales !
Bloody well said.
This gentleman is right and what's even worse is he's stating the damn obvious, hence the annoyance in his tone.
I have also been saying this to friends and colleagues alike and so far it has been met with raised eyebrows.
I'm surprised to see the Dr speaking out of his arse, I always thought he was well informed, he's clearly not, !
Humanity has become really childish.
Love Starkey
Great conversation. DR David is very sensible.
Spot on with everything he said BRAVO Sir 👍👍👍👍
Yes a bit of common sense something that is in such short supply within the MSM these days.
Nothing about the Azov battalion extremists.
Dr David Starkey .... excellent reading of the situation as ever, academies loss is our gain!!
Dr Starkey talks so much common sense, we really don't have a true democracy in Australia. Cheers Rosemary Perth Western Australia (71 yrs)
At last a man with sense.
The best thing I've heard all day !!!
David Starkey is an amazing man.
Starkey is right on
Superb as ever Dr Starkey.
Some dam good points there.
Dr Starkey is on point 💯
Finally, someone with sense!
It's good to see that David Starkey knows better than all of the world's leaders.
Starkey is a rare grown up prepared to say "No" to eternal juveniles.
Spot on Dr
Who in the name of god cut off RT
Starkey should stay as what he is- a very good historian and leave the value judgements on current actions alone. I agree that we need to stand up for actions but to start it off by saying we can do nothing because of a fear of nuclear war is nonsense. We should stand up with force to Russia. It’s all that history teaches us- Russians will not respond to anything but force and might in geopolitics. We actually need to call the bluff because that’s all it is, in one thing Starkey is right Putin is not mad- he is sane in a distorted mind set. Force is all he will understand. However, Starkey is so outside his expertise here that it is like getting my decorator to comment on the Cistene chapel!
Dr David Starkey is a great and intelligent man. I really wish he was in a position of power in the UK. I salute, sir.
Finally, a voice of common sense on this war.....
An international war v a local war. Neither is good. One is worse.
David Starkey is brilliant
