- Next to the banks of the Mississippi River is the Delta region, a land that feels removed from America. A distinct culture with a turbulent history... home of blues music and some of the warmest people in the world. Join me as we get lost on a road trip and learn from the ground up from the locals what this part of America is like.

Havent seen one of your videos in a while. Really enjoyed this, life seems so peaceful compared to the city.
I’m so glad that you found some of that magic. I always feel it when I go home to visit there.
if u look at the air in the first 50 seconds u c what "they" spray in the air , on us / our food/water etc.... maybe an idee for a serie???? ;)
Happy to see you came through my hometown area.
Thank you, for your time and making these video's! GOD bless you and your work abundantly in THE MIGHTY JESUS CHRIST HOLY NAME.🙏🏽❤️
Peter, your documentation of america opens our eyes that we do not have a racial divide in this country. We have a class divide. Which in most places disproportionately affects black people. When we have communities like this of impoverished white and black people they are all in it together.
So true
I was watching the Mind Unleashed rundown on the Lil Rascals / Our Gang series. Yes, some of the comedy in these shorts may not pass “modern sensibilities”, but what the woke crowd has forgotten is that the poor white kids and the poor black kids were there together as equals.
Most folks of color around where I live drive nicer cars and wear nicer clothes than a lot of people no matter what shade they are so there are people down here that can thrive. I don't know how they do it but they do!
@@DeflatingAtheismyou don’t even know what woke means if you think that the “woke crowd” doesn’t understand it’s class warfare keeping everyone down. You need to do more research and stop letting politicians pit you against “them.”
You are dreaming.
Being from a town like Alligator, MS, I'm glad I made it out. I read books to occupy the boredom of growing up in an improverished town. Graduated high school, graduated college, got a career, worked in corporate America for 10 years, moved to California, started and maintaining a smoothie business. I've always had to work twice as hard, but I made it, coming from a 37 year old black woman, I always believed I could despite my environment and basic resourcecs. Never give up!
I live in Belgium. I loved this video and I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment. This looks like a great place to live in terms of people / location, but if there is absolutely nothing to do in terms of economic activity, there is no future to be had.

He is the best. Not biased at all and tries to speak to the people to educate us on how badly these little towns just need a dollar general. I would think that would be a perfect place for one. Cheap land. Come on dollar general, look into it.
Thank you for sharing America. The rural poor have been cast down as small minded and evil. I find them to be the most generous and genuine people in America
The Mayor getting in touch with the Dollar General to build a store speaks to his ability as mayor. Good for him! He clearly cares about his community.
I hope they get one. The hard part is according to the census data there was about 120 people living there. I think someone that could come in with a mom and pop style store would do better and have a little of everything like years ago. A dollar general would run them out of business if they set up a store. Corporate America has run a lot of these small towns down and it’s gonna take all the smaller families to bring them back with help of others
dollar general puts stores in the damnedest of places. Should be good to go.
I think a mom and pop shop is a lot better then a dollar general.
Great
I don’t understand why they wouldn’t put one there I know of a Dollar General here in NC sitting in the middle of nowhere just like Alligator and I’m sure the area it’s in has less than 100 people
The energy of the lady in Greenville was amazing. These are the type of people who make the world a better place.

I live in Bastrop, Louisiana. The crime rate here is VERY high...they hide how many homicides there really are. Even the shootings. A papermill used to be here but when it closed everything went downhill. 45% of the town lives below the poverty line.

Everyone has a chance at a 'better' life. The problem with the USA is the welfare. No one is motivated to excel when the guberment is handing out some money just to placate the people.

I'm a travel Nurse Practitioner I have been to this region many times and the medical care is horrible. Nobody, will take any assignments to this state due to poor facilities and people are not willing to lose their license because of poor facilties. Its sad to see Americans suffer from conditions that maybe solved with resources and health care. Alot of people in this region and the south in general are so nice and appreciative. It is a total appreciative feeling than in California which offer none of that. I love the South especially the family feeling they give you. Of course you have those ignorant people but that is everywhere. What an amazing video.
Iam a travel nurse also and Ive been to alot of states and I like working in Mississippi alot. North Miss like th delta hospitals are having a ruff time and dont have alot of $ resources, but if you come further south, like to Hattiesburg, Ms where hospitals and clinics are booming and are known for great medical services here and on the Mississippi Gulfcoast, Biloxi, Gulfport, Ocean springs have some awesome hospitals. I am 35 and have grown up in southwest Mississippi. My mother grew up in the delta and we still have family there. The battles we face in life makes us the strong people we are. Everyone in Mississippi has had their share of the hard times. We look for ways to make things better and strive to make a difference. Despite setbacks we stay true to being the hospitality state. Yes, DC doesn't even know these places exist. Unbelievable.
I was actually born and raised in Greenville. As far as why the local economy crashed, back in the 1970s Greenville had a lot of industry downtown on the lakefront. Industry for building barges, painting ships, and hauling grain down the river. The port of Greenville was a big stopping place for barges coming up and down the river. When the Grain Embargo was enacted against the USSR in 1980, it caused grain prices to plummet. This had a devastating impact on the economy and a lot of those factors and shutdown, taking the jobs with them. People moved away when the jobs left and the town still hasn't recovered.
So Jimmy Carter 1.0. As compared to Jimmy Carter 2.0 now in the white house.
Thanks for the history facts. I left Greenville in 1972

Even in a major city, if you take some courage and go to maybe a neighborhood some people think is not safe, usually that means poor, you find nicer people than anywhere else.
@@Hollylivengood That‘s true. I (as a European) always went by the assumption that Americans are kind of superficial, super extroverted and self centered.
That‘s the image you get when you watch American movies that mostly come from California.
I was relieved that most Americans, especially on the countryside, really aren‘t like this but are warm-hearted, open and emotional people.
@@kilroywashere1628 And that's rich Americans who can travel. The most of us can't even get any vacation days, and when we can, we can't afford to travel. I actually got to make a trip to Mexico finally, because a bunch of my friends wanted to help me travel somewhere, it was something. But anyway, when I got there, everybody kept saying "You don't really act US. You act like my abuela." 😄Which was awesome, because I got to meet their abuela, which was really fun. So you guys only ever meet the Americans who are dicks.
E` sempre cosi`: chi a meno e` sempre piu` disponibile a donare. Tra l'altro e` la terra dove la musica piu` bella del mondo e` nata ed ha influenzato universalmente tutti gli artisti rock worldwide. Long live to the South and Delta blues, and kudos to your brother Claudio.
Peter, you're touching the nerve of America, Regions, towns, communities, the invisible and true Grit, Best information without agendas, keep it coming 👏.
Yes he absolutely is, very good stuff Francisco
Peter, thank you for showing and sharing with us, some of the most historical /genuine places/people in our country!!
A great video!!
Another great video, Peter! These towns trying to lift themselves up is inspiring...
Fun Fact about the Mississippi River during WW2. In the Southern part, they used to build Submarines on Docks on the Mississippi River. And float them down to the Gulf to Launch them.
Awesome
Thank you for all the great insightful videos! As a European (Dutch) I learn so much about the US, things I wouldn't have known otherwise, through these videos.
So do we ourselves as Americans! Our mass Corp owned media tells us nothing real!😮
Great reporting Peter. Your message of celebrating how far America has come in acceptance of one another is a refreshing sentiment. Americans do love one another!
One of the best Vids on YT these days. Show everything without filter. The ppl are open and not depressed I think. Event if they are poor. I like it.
Money is the root of all evil. Usually the happiest folks are the ones who seem to have less tangibles. Someone who loves the world and the worldly things does not love God. And God is Love. ❤️
Peter- I just found your channel- if you are still in Ms., PLEASE come to Vicksburg ! I work for a 91 year old man who was born here, you would love to talk to him ! He can tell you SO much about life here, you will not regret it ! Thank you for the beautiful videos.
Yes, please go to Vicksburg. My colleague is from there and I have learned much from here growing up there. Would love to see.
Republican controlled state isn’t it? Tate Reeves good ol boy is governor I think I’m in Australia watching from afar liked your video a lot 👍
My dad grew up in Shelby. He took me there to see his parents ( my grandparents) graves when I was in my early teens. He was shook when he saw how the town looked. He passed away a few months ago, I wish he was still here so I could show this to him.
Thank you for the honest, non-judgmental view of this area. Your documentaries are always so informative, showing how a wide variety of people live in any given area. I really appreciate your presentation of the good and bad with talk about how to improve with respect to wherever people are.
The people warmed my heart hearing them talk
When the subject of cornbread came up, both of the men in the truck lit up 😆👍 love it!!
23:23 🌽love the cornbread🍞
Food brings men together 😂 "Armies march by their stomaches"
As a blues musician from France, I decided to leave my lil' country for the big continent where the blues is born, more precisely, Mississippi Delta. 10-y-ago, I stayed and travelled many states, especially the southeastern ones. I did my "chitlin' circuit" for the blues aficionados. Met so many nice ppl along my blue trip, specifically in the small towns or very small - like Alligator, MS. I know for sho Clarksdale!! I have the huge luck to jam with Big Jack Johnson & the Oilers at Red's juke joint. I met the legend Charlie Musselwhite and way more local blues guys like Daddy Rich, Razorblade, Super Chickan etc. I miss those open minded fellas here and there. As I know pretty much the black history and the blues culture and backgrounds, it was easier for me to be (very) welcomed. I've been widely appreciated for my will of discovery and my way to pay my tribute to some bluesmen/women who "educated" me their ways. What is doing Peter is absolutely great and very interesting! I think it's time for me to go back on this mighty land of Mississippi! Poor ppl have a great heart bc they know too much what is pain and going thru it. Y'all gotta realize the world legacy that is the Blues. And so many ways to play it in MS.!! THX Peter🤠Go visit folks! Take care!
That is so cool. I lived in the delta for a few years and it always struck me how Euopeans appreciated the delta. It was like a mystical magic place to them. Then everyone in the U.S. shits on this area and a lot of the people that live there think it sucks. Which is understandable. There are parts that are straight up 3rd world conditions. There is a special energy to the place though. I just hope the conditions there improve and people are able to live better lives one day.
I actually had some musicians from france and switzerland play at my house once. They played didn't play blues, its was weird ambient noise stuff, but they were really blown away at all the history. Like all their favorite blues musicians were born like 30-45 minutes away. Lol a lot of rambling but I've just always loved how much europeans appreciated the history and vibes
Did you every make your way to Cleveland?
Charlie Musselwhite truly a legend!!
🇫🇷
I have been to Red's late one night. I don't even know how to describe it to someone who hasn't been there... it is so run down and so awesome in the same breath.
I’m a Clarksdalian. Unfortunately, Red Paden, who owned and operated Red’s passed away this past month. The town wasn’t featured much here, but it has been sad to see its demise over the past 5-10 years, in comparison to the gradual decline we were experiencing
My ex father-in-law was Razorblade’s manager. It’s a small world, isn’t it
Amazing content, Peter. Keep it up!
I love the history of Blues music in the Mississippi Delta. Great job with this video. Thank you!
The Delta is the Home of Americas Music
Really enjoying this new series Peter.
I still find it baffling that you are one of the only UA-camrs doing these small town America town videos who actually gets out of your vehicle & talks to the local residents to get real stories & views.
Keep up the great documentaries.
P.S. The Appalachia series is still my favorite so far.
Really? There is A LOT of UA-cam channels that engage! What you talk'n bout Willis!!
There are a ton of great youtube channels on this stuff
@@JL-uu3lvoooh! Can you tell some of them? I'd love to see
Appalachian Mountain region are so beautiful. It could be a tourist destination on its own.
Kurt Caz is one.
I was born in Greenville Mississippi. I moved to California at the age of four and never been back. It's good to see my birthplace in its current condition. I plan a visit back there soon.
I love her openness, big heart! Love this!
What’s crazy is that you’re just strolling through and the first person really set the tone and gave you a quick piece of history and from there it’s like the soul of the town told itself to you and us . Excellent work brother ! 🫡
I am from the South...That's the way we are...I 'm glad you saw how it really is here...
Yeah, that’s just normal small town stuff I presume.
The first person he chose to put in the video, you mean. You people still don't know how the internet works, do you?
Peter~~~Thanks for the "RIDE" today and it was not only Fun, but also eye opening like ALL your video's! At 77 I can't travel anymore because of Health problems, and also my wife has Health problems, but with you I can sit in my chair and let YOU do all the DRIVING and WALKING around while I'm in the comfort of my chair! Thanks again for all you do for your followers and PLEASE keep up the great job. Wish I was in the position to be one of your "Member's" also, but retirement, for many of us, has it's limitations.
I hope sir if I make it to that age, that there will be options like Peters channel for me to enjoy the same as yourself. UA-cam must be a great source of entertainment for you and the wife.
I LOVE to watch Peter, in his travels, as he's a Great Guy and easy to watch him going around talking to complete strangers about where he's at and Why & What he's doing in their area!@@911axe
Love, love, love your videos. It is such a hard balance...of keeping the small town feel but bringing in businesses and outsiders.
Peter~I've watched many of your videos and I've got to say, many of them are eye openers. I've been Blessed to be able to travel a lot, but I've still learned a lot. Thank you for doing this.
Carrie and her husband are rad. Love their enthusiasm for their town
Thank you so much for saying! We just wanna do good for my hometown.
The World need more of that positivity. Keep on supporting your town. I hope to drive back to the Delta again someday. Beautiful nature and wonderful people. Love from Florida
Wish you both gave up drugs@@kerrilambert2793 best wishes
I want to personally thank you for your work. It means allot more than you think and reaches farther and deeper than you know. Hello from Switzerland
Thank you so much! I love CH, I lived in Verbier for a winter many years ago, great memories.
Hi from Mildura, Victoria, Australia also. Videos reaching far and wide
Mississippian here, I couldnt wait to get out when i was a kid. Now that I have a family of my own and live in TN, I look back and love home. There is nothing as sure as home, when time is so fleeting.
I agree I’m from Mississippi currently living in Nashville, TN will never go back. Honestly the best decision I’ve ever made.
@@arihudson480 what part of MS are you from?

Thank you so much for all your videos. It is so important to learn the culture of others. To understand how other people live their lives in the same country we call home. You are appreciated.
I commented on your last video about my time living and working in southern Louisiana. I worked out of a small office in Convent , LA, up and down both sides of the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I worked as a home health care nurse. I met some amazing salt of the earth people that I still remember to this day. Really enjoying this series.
Shoutout cancer alley!
I'm 30 and grew up in clarksdale. While I no longer live there, and Mississippi as a whole has fallen on hard times, if you dig deep enough you can find, in those communities, that heartbeat that makes an area go
PeterSantenello videos are as good as it gets on UA-cam. Simply superb TV. Really hope these various themes get further developed.
Thanks for your work showing us what’s happening in small town America. Really enjoyed your work.
I'm from Australia and have been to America twice, first time we did major cities. Second time we hired a car and did small town USA, and we loved it the people we met made the trip, so much so when we go back to America we will be doing the areas in this video and we can't wait
Not many Aussies go to the US anymore, most of us prefer Europe for a big trip.
@joanneburford6364 Yeah it's starting to get expensive to travel to America. But my wife and I just love it over there, seen so many amazing things. Europe will be further down the track
The delta small towns are full of great people. Be careful if you decide to hang out on Beale Street. Memphis is a crap hole. It's nothing but thugs.
@@uptownonfridayhi from Montana! Glad you enjoyed your stay!
I was born in the MS Delta. Greenville, MS. Greenville used to have a large Jewish and Chinese population. Everyone started moving away in the 80’s. A lot of people who move away as young adults come back "home" to retire. I’ve moved away, but still have family in the Greenville, Leland, Clarksdale, Cleveland, and Ruleville areas and go back about once a year. It's a different world in many ways, but it has an undeserved “bad” reputation. Yes it’s “poor”, but for the most part people are happy and they get along.
I was born in Greenville at the age of four in 1972. I moved to Los Angeles and never been back. I planning a trip to go back soon.
@@clizark1 you should definitely get back and see it for yourself. The last time I was there (Jan ‘23) Greenville’s Main Street and Washington Ave had pot holes so big they had them roped off with orange road cones/barrels and caution tape. It looked like they’d been there a while. Never seen anything like that! But you also see a lot of love and hope people have for their community.
@@_-YoMoMMa-_ Right on, will do. It's been over 50 years 😔
Don’t forget the Italians.
Another nice video. You’ve found the heartbeat of America, thanks for sharing
Thank you for telling stories of these people. Thank you for what you do .
