i go to katie for absolute fun, i go to lisa for insanely detailed designs, i go to soap and clay for the most indepth science, and I come here for the best soap making commentary...and i come to all of you for beautiful soap making....❤ Also, babe...its time for a proper stick blender. 😅
I used to go to Clyde for color stuff, but otherwise agree 1000% with everything you've said. I also laughed out loud about the stick blender and told my daughter, after reading her the comment, that its cause he uses the itty bitty baby blendy stick when she thought I was laughing at nothing in the silence xD
That makes me very happy because I like to be silly! That’s a very good way to break them down, though. Every soap channel fulfills some sort of need! And omg I know. I’ll use a stick blender for my next batch, I promise! 😂
I think your soap is perfectly fine and not dangerous at all. The white layer looked like it was ricing a bit, not an issue, just cosmetic. As for the seeping on the bottom, that is the result of glycerin rivers that can happen in soap making, again, purely cosmetic and not dangerous. Your soap is fine. If you ever do get a lye heavy soap, one indicator is that your soap crumbles when you cut it, but even with a lye heavy soap, you can actually fix it by doing a method called salting out. Anyway great looking soap and fun video!
I do silversmithing - I picked up a frother at a yard sale for keeping my flux blended, but while it "kinda" works, the torque is way too low to work on the wet, grainy chunks. I'm going to assume the undermixing is just because the torque is too low to keep it spinning as the liquid gets thicker from emulsification. Also, name: "What? A Melon?"
Haha your name took me a second to get and then I laughed. I agree, I think the frother isn’t powerful enough - that or it’s running low on battery power. Also, silversmithing, how cool! What kind of stuff do you like to make?
I've had seeping happen to one of my soaps, did the zapp test, and while it definitly zapped quite spectacularly I did keep my tounge and tastebuds. Also the soap was fine and passed the zapp test a few weeks later. Lovely design in any case!
I am having such a stressful week. End of year university exams, results delayed, a back injury while I need to put my things into storage and move the rest back home, my suitcase zipper broke etc. ... It's a lot. Thank you for this video, I saved it for bedtime because I knew it would help me relax and take my mind off of everything. Also did the vaseline trick work?
That is so sweet of you, thank you 😊 I suffered from a terrible back injury a decade ago and I know how awful it can be 😞. Now that Saturday’s over we can all start a new week and hopefully the next one works out better for you! I tried the Vaseline and while it was uncomfortable going to bed with gooey fingers it did definitely take some of the inflammation down so thank you for that!
You made an authentic watermelon and the leaking is just the juice from the watermelon 🍉 😂 I love your videos! Do you have a donation page so I can donate money for a stick blender? I think it’s time to have a moment of silence for the frother and move on 😅😂
Haha I’ll roll with it! Thank you for the offer but the sad thing is I actually have a stick blender 😂 my batches are just too small to accommodate it!
@@SoapUniverse Oh, I did think about the batch size. Well, it seems like Mr Frother fights on to make more soap! Thank you for your videos. I love them 😍
I think your underblending assumption is reasonable. If you feel uncomfortable testing it yourself, you're wise not to sell it, especially since it's such a small batch. It certainly does look good, though. A failed batch happens to all of eventually.
I know nothing about soap but I hope you try this again some day. Art is often about persistence not perfection. Perhaps with better equipment it will come out better in the future?
I'm gearing up for Baby's First Soap Making Adventure pretty soon, so I very much appreciate seeing the goofs as much as the triumphs! *takes notes* Lovely video, and if you decided to do a less weepy batch of the watermelon soap, I'm sure it'd be a hit 💚
Thanks! To make the scraper, I cut out a rectangular piece of sturdy cardboard the width of my mold, which is 3”, but I make sure to leave some “handlebars” on top so the scraper can ride the top of the mold and keep the design consistent! As for the actual design, I just drew it on with some pencil and cut it out with regular old scissors. 😊
Your channel is going to do so good! You’re so entertaining 🥹 Seems like your fragrance might’ve riced a bit. Sometimes that happens, and some more blending can fix it. I had a horrible time one day with my neon pink mica was preventing my soap to emulsify. The rest of my layers did great, but that one pink layer, I tried blending it for 40 minutes for it to emulsify and then break again 5 minutes after?! Soap making can be strange sometimes. I omitted the pink layer and moved on and I’m happy with the results.
Thank you! And wow, I’ve never heard of a colourant misbehaving that way before. What brand was it so I can avoid it? 😂 The real art of soapmaking is figuring out how to pivot when things go wrong! Sometimes if a fragrance or colour or design isn’t cooperating, it’s gotta go 😊
@@SoapUniverse it was Pretty kitty by Mad Micas. But it was a mix of fragrance and colourant I think cause I’ve used Pretty kitty before with no problem. And I’ve used that fragrance before with no issues too.
@@SpooksAndSpanks Ooh that’s a gorgeous pink! And soapmaking is so fickle. Sometimes you think you have all the answers and then a batch will throw you through a loop. It keeps it new and interesting!
I would invest in some ph strips. They’re not that expensive and you get a bunch of them in a pack. They’ve confirmed when I had made lye-heavy soap that I had to dispose of, and saved a batch I thought would have to meet the same fate. Just sayin’.
Maybe its just me but, I've put Taijin on lots of fruit and its never oozed off like jelly before >.>. sort of like your bottom layers ooozed oil.. I had some that did that and it smelled a little like the fragrance oil I had used and vaguely of coconut oil. Also, I would call it 'juicy suika'. Juicy as a funny nod to the extra moisture, and Suika because its the Japanese word for watermelon, and I think it sound super cool :)
Juicy Suika is a great name! One thing I neglected to show is that he doused his watermelon in honey so the Tajin would stick 🤢 When would your layers ooze? Did you ever figure out why they did that?
@@SoapUniverse honey does explain the ooze... Thank you! My soap that oozed had gotten really hot. It was when I put my lid on it's mold.. it was on the bottom and at the connection between the two bottom colors.. otherwise I'm not sure? It was also oven process, but it only happened that once..
Love that we get a new SU video! Sorry the batch didn't work out. It's pretty, but a bit slimey and possibly caustic on the inside (like some people I know). 😂
Not sure how long you like your names - but I'd call it Biter Melon 3 reasons: Sounds like bitter melon There is a bit taken out of it And due to the danger of this particular batch, it would bite you back!
I don't think your soap is dangerous. Get some pH paper and test it. I hope it will be normal. A great shame to waste such a beautiful soap. Your editing and commentary are superb. Try to get a stick blender which would make your life more easier.
"most watermelons you buy from the store are seedless" is such a funny thing to hear because I live with someone who absolutely HATES seedless watermelons. we don't buy them. i don't know when the last time i had a seedless watermelon was. during the summer we eat like a full watermelon a week.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a normal watermelon! Maybe it’s a Canada thing and we only import the seedless ones. I do remember a lot of watermelons having the black seeds as a kid, though 😎
Many colorants/dyes are indicators so would be able to tell if your mystery liquid was lye. Google "natural pH indicators" and try to use one of those. It's as easy as "oh, when mixed with the liquid it changed to "this" color." That's it. Source: Am chemist.
I’ve seen some soapmakers use a red cabbage solution as the indicator, which is great because it’s cheap and accessible! I can’t imagine it’s extremely reliable, though.
Your voice keeps me interested regardless of the outcome... and even though the end batch didn't turn out, I agree with the design, the smell you described sounds delicious too, and of course, the layers! Always a pleasure ... 🧼 🧼 🫧 🫧 bye!
