@@invadertifxiii that doesn’t sound like a “but” phrase for me. You can be a 5 and like to talk to people. The fact that it drains you is telling, and suggestive that you may be a 5. The fact that you do it anyway should be irrelevant. You could have a 6 wing (I know a few chatty 6s), or it could be a social subtype, or maybe you just really find the human experience fascinating, and want to know about everyone. Or maybe it’s how you were raised.
Or maybe you aren’t a 5, and you could have a 5 wing? But if this is the message that resonates the most with you, you’re probably a 5. The boxes are here for guidance, not to confine or exclude.

5w4 here, and sign 10 was pretty accurate haha
I do think I'm pretty territorial with my stuff and personal space - I mean, I have no problem lending my things to others, but they have to ask first or I'll freak out. But overall, I'd rather have people stay at the door instead of coming in, though.
I don't feel a conection with any of those famous people... in fact, I don't think I relate to or look up to anyone famous - or from real life even. Maybe our own personal interests as fives will differ, not everyone will be into computer science, programing or etc. In my case, I like tech, I really do, but I put more effort in researching about how the human mind works, body language, facial expressions, how society and culture may affect that, etc.

Some great information in this video. I self identify as a type five, and this rang bells for me.
And I wanted to add that depth of focus and perception a 5 brings doesn't just apply to scientific disciplines - a technical, problem solving mindset can be applied just as well to fitness, or gardening or music or whatever. So the intellectual thing is a tendency, habit or behaviour, rather than any specific interest. I'm sure you know this but wanted to add...
Also, I have heard that the personality is very fluid until about 30 or 35.So if we type ourselves or another before then, we have too accept that we may change. Does that ring true for you?
    Thanks for the video!

    • @enneagramandcoaching

Hahaha I related to all of these! I think the thing with privacy also has to do with how we view knowledge. We see knowledge and information as a powerful tool, and because of that we are very cautious about what personal information we share with others because what we share could potentially leave us vulnerable to others in some way. That sounds very cynical, but it just makes logical sense to me! As for dressing, a lot of the time I do just dress to not be naked and wear a very minimalist uniform of a black tshirt and jeans. However fashion is one of my interests and so I can enjoy spending time putting together outfits and getting dressed up! However I will usually spend a couple hours in one go in my wardrobe making outfits that I can remember so I can just throw them on if I need to later. I think the minimalist attire has more to do with not wanting to put energy into things we don't find interesting. If we're interested in clothes, we can actually get very into it. A good example of this I think would be the character Beth from The Queens Gambit who I also believe is a 5w4. I would say that after chess, her secondary interest is fashion!

The small talk resonated with me- especially in work settings where we have to "go around the circle and say something about yourself."
I am definitely cynical in my mind, but it doesnt always translate into speech well, so I keep it in. I love fixing things and problem solving, though sometimes I feel like people expect me to be some profound deep thinker and I worry they will figure out the truth if I talk too much.
Happy bday to your son!!! And yes, I agree with the whole google thing. It's ridiculous and frustrating that people dont just look into the answers themselves. I think the least they could do is groundwork for figuring stuff out and only ask if they are confused.

Even though I prefer facts over feelings, I feel as if I'm in touch with my emotions, but don't really know how to express them. When I was younger, I experienced emotions a lot stronger, but you can only get hurt so many times to where you learn to shut them off when bad things happen. I don't know if that makes any sense. I guess the point I'm trying to make is even though I'm emotionally available, I feel as if by others knowing I'm a type 5, people will believe I'm not emotionally available.

This week, I listened to Elon Musk on clubhouse, and he goes on a little bit about his life growing up, and it felt like a glimpse into the making of a 5. Then he went on to hijack the interview by bringing on his own guest to interview, Vlad Tenev of Robinhood, potentially another 5, but one who seems less secure in himself than Elon Musk is.
I’ve also seen some fascinating arguments that Einstein may have been a type 9! That is definitely an interesting rabbit hole, and I don’t know what to think there!

Yesssssss! I love those in depth discussions too. Also, as for Einstein part, i think it's easy to Mistype people when examining them because only they can truly tell what their core is like and our deductions are based on what side of them we see. I'm an ambivert and people usually mistype me as a 1w9 but I'm a balanced 5 i know because i really need a good alone time after a vigorous social situation. Also, i learnt how to socialise growing up as a necessity and studied psychology to understand myself and others around me. I think that's the most type 5 thing to ever do. :p

5w4 here (probably sx/so, though the jury's still out on that one) and INTJ. The famous type 5s I resonate most with are Jane Austen and Friedrich Nietzsche, though I don't necessarily agree with everything either of them says. I'm also very much not a fan of Elon Musk.
I'm also not a typical 5 because I get bored with math and I've never been interested in computers or programming. I do want to learn why things work and I've always asked "why" way too much and gotten into so much trouble in both school and church growing up. I like to be challenged in my thinking and have my assumptions questioned, especially if they're not logically or factually sound.
With small talk, I've always enjoyed making a bit of a game from it. I like trying to see how well I can direct the "small talk" conversation into something that I'm interested in, without the other people catching on. For an easy thing, get people talking about their pets, if they have any. It's honestly much more tolerable than talking about the weather or whatnot and I've found that most people like talking about their pets.

I enjoy trades. I'm a female construction worker and I repair operators and garage doors etc. Lots of manual labor. I also enjoy psychology and philosophy, history, science, productivity and oddly, sports science and physical therapy, health, agriculture etc. I'm very active and also love learning. I enjoy what I do, but also because I can be alone with my podcasts playing while I work
I can relate to hating small talk. It's awkward, stressful, boring. But I can talk all day about something deep or interesting

What am I a 4 or a 5. It doesn't matter the world is full of morons that won't appreciate my individuality and accept me as part of the group. Maybe I'll work on a portrait of Schopenhauer or watch some more videos to try to determine if I am a 4 or a 5. I can't go to work until I know. Can anyone help?😉- LOL (but really)

I don't actually agree that much with the dectective thing (except for social subtypes) cause it involves... people insight. A 6 would be much better as a detective since they combine logic *and* people sense.
I personally am a computational biologist which does go into that whole computer or research corner (I know, how stereotypical) but many are also artists or craftspeople/artisans. (Though I guess you already listed Emilie Dickinson as an artistic person)

  • @rolandoquinonez4644

Spot on with every single topic except one, and it may surprise you.
I like small talk, but hear me out. I use it as a tool to spark a conversation and see if the person is capable or willing to dive deeper.
    For example:
    Me: nice weather
They: yes, it's supposed to be warm all weekend.
Me: yes, unusual this time of year
They: yeah, climate change I guess
Me: or it could be the weakening electomagnetosphere
The next response is key because it determines weather (pun intended) I seek a new victim or reel them in 😂 If the answer is simplistic or detached, it's over. If the answer is inquisitive or intelligent, it's on.
So, realistic I actually do hate small talk, but as a tool to weed out the simpletons, I love it! Was that last statement sarcastic or cynical? 😉

Ok , i just recently found out about this enneagram stuff, so i took an online test. It indicated i was a 5, with a big ol wedge for 9. I have been a software developer for over 30 years, i do like science, tech, superheroes, etc.
One thing is, it is not that your friends come to you with problems, as you may not have any friends. Your coworkers certainly will. I think a 5 can be a loner type, although he is smart enough to be sociable, it is just not a priority to be a socialte.
And i do not think anyone can imagine what goes on in his head. He is often told he does not make sense, he has no depth, he is not known, etc. The world does not understand him, and can be cruel to him, except, of course, when it needs him. And the resourceful innovator thT he is, he will usually come to the rescue.

I often deliberate between deciding if I'm a 6 or a 5, and this video definitely helped me realize I'm probz a 6 with a strong 5 wing. Signs 4-10 are SO real for me, but my engagement with the world is slightly more dictated by a need for certainty than understanding how things work. Often times, I'll panic about what or how I should spend my time researching instead of following the distinct answers I want, which feels so 6w5 to me lol (Or I'm just a perfectionist). I'm very much a devil's advocate, but I often prioritize allowing the other person to save face or saving face myself before questioning things aloud. Thanks for helping me put those questions to rest!

I'm 100% sure I'm a type 5 but I've never really understood this concept of "energy" when it comes to being around other people or being alone. In classic type 5 fashion it's frustrating to find a concept so impenetrable and I overthink EVERYTHING so I'm sure I'm overthinking energy as well but if anyone with a less chaotic brain can help me unpack it it would be much appreciated!
