Seeing all sides? Oh yes! It is so overwhelming to be a type 9 in the world right now, with all of the conflict and disagreement in this political atmosphere. From opinions on the pandemic - to the presidency- to race relations- I find myself getting emotional randomly throughout the day because of the unrest.

As a 9 I don't do everything to avoid conflict, and I'm not terrified of it. I think it's more that I will go to great lengths to preserve my peace, and that i need to be really passionate about something to take the energy to be aggressive. If something goes against my value system, or someone threatens my physical or mental comfort I definitely will engage with my anger and get upset or defensive. I think sometimes in these videos about type 9s they overlook type 9w8 because they're less common. Everything else you talked about I definitely relate to though.

I also think this has a lot to do with the level of health that you are. You sound like a healthier 9. I am a 9w8 and I understand what you are talking about and agree a lot of times the teachings are more about the 9w1. Thanks for sharing your wisdom of being a 9.

@@enneagramandcoaching that's a good point, I think there were definitely times in my past where I was more of a pushover. I can see how it would be related to our type even if it's not a trait I feel like I currently display.

Wow, I love the language you used here. I’ve been back and forth between different numbers because I don’t avoid conflict either and it doesn’t scare me. I’ve even been watching/listening to things tonight to see if I might be a 6 instead. 😅 But a friend once called me a peacemaker, and what you mentioned about going to great lengths to preserve your peace really resonated with me. I can relate to almost everything about a Type 9 except for being conflict avoidant. I also relate a little with both w8 and w1, but heard someone once say if your environment is very important to you, it means you lean more strongly toward w1...which does describe my feelings. (Order vs. Chaos) Anyway, Interesting perspective - Thanks for sharing! 😊

To your statement that all nines LOVE being outside, I'd add this caveat--I like the outdoors when it's comfortable. As a self-pres nine I'm SUPER focused on comfort so I often associate the outdoors with being too hot, too cold, too many bugs, and too far from simple pleasures of technology and blankets and cleanliness. Under ideal circumstances, I absolutely love the outdoors, but I'm definitely content to stay inside a lot of the time!

  • @catiehinkle8616

I don’t think 9s have a problem asserting themselves but others have often denied their reality. They have not stopped to actually listen and try to understand their needs. This has trained them to be really cautious about opening up. Or they give up because they have been hurt many times. “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps” advice ends up just being offensive in the end.

I used to think I was a type 4 but the more I look into it, pretty sure I’m a 9. I avoid conflict at all costs. Making decisions is super stressful. I HAVE to do my bed time routine or I can just not sleep well. And I’m the queen of procrastination.

Ok I thought I was a 5, but I resonate so much more with 9! Conflict and confrontation is *the worst* like viscerally. All these are very relatable. Very go with the flow, and I’m very in tune with nature. I relate to the intellectual side of 5, but I relate more to the core motivation of 9.

I get small tasks out of the way so that I have order around me and therefore I have the mental capacity to tackle the larger task. A larger task starts with a systematic approach (usually a list) and I don’t want any frustrations or distractions. When I go in, I go in deep, and for the long haul.

I resonate with tons of stuff in this video! I often have a hard time knowing what I like or what I want to do, but I always know what I DON'T like or DON'T want to do. And it is weird to reconcile being super stubborn with being super go with the flow. Nines are just full of contradictions!

Type 9 here....I need to have my downtime. Part of my routine. I dislike conflict...but if needed I will participate and get it done just to bring the peace again. I will go with the flow. I hate feeling like people dislike what I picked. I always know what I don’t want..but don’t know what I do want sometimes. I love being outside.❤️ minus the bugs biting me. Yessss, biggest things I put off...the simple and fun things get done first. I know I can accomplish those things that are small, and the big things take time and I need to focus. If I have time to focus then I’d do that. I will be quiet in large groups. I’m better one on one. And yes, I can see allllll sides. I understand points of views easier than others. It’s good to put yourself in other peoples shoes.

With the side seeing, I relate so hard too. My mom was soooo PO'd at my sister and wanted to type an apology text (she's a type 2 fyi) and I deleted everything and handed it back to my mom and she was like "wow, this is amazing..." and ever since she's always recommended: "oh, Alyssa's good at apologies! You should ask her what to say!" And its really sweet 😂 I can always see why someone is upset, but I must admit, my oldest sister is the hardest to see through because she always shuts people out when things get hard and never tells why (she's a type 1). My 2nd oldest sister is a type 8 and always struggles with her type 4 husband, because he's the daisy flower of the group, I suppose you could say 😂 he likes things a certain way, and is incredibly moody, which drives everyone nuts! He has depression and anxiety and OCD which has given him a lot of trouble and we're honestly worried about his verbal abuse as their conflicts follow that cycle of conflict, honeymoon period, conflict, honeymoon period, conflict, etc. Sorry that got deep... anyway, then we have my brother who is also a type 9, and will always hide from conflict whenever possible. I believe he's a 9w1 while I'm a 9w8 so I REALLY struggle in conflict. I'm always so angry but I can't bring myself to say half of what I want to say because I'm terrified of them hating me or thinking I'm nuts. I want to be loved, and I want to love, and conflict should always be forgiven so we can learn from each others mistakes. Yup. Oh and as a baby the only thing that kept me happy was being outdoors. Literally cry all day and immediately fall asleep as soon as the wind brushed my cheeks. And procrastination? Then perfectionism? Fire? That's basically my life story when it comes to school 😂 routine? I would die without it. I like to know what is happening what days things are happening

Love my routines! I always thought I was eating the same breakfast all the time because I’m not a morning person and needed the routine to keep from thinking. Weekends throw me off because my routine gets messed up. My husband and I also go through the whole “what do you want to eat?” “I don’t care.” “How about pizza?” “No, I don’t want pizza.” Just about every time we eat. He has finally realized that I really don’t have something in mind to eat and I really am not just trying to make him guess it.

oh my goodness, I can relate to almost all of these. I love being outside reading a good book, and my dream would be a cabin in the woods with a self sustaining garden. I also agree that it is hard for me to enter a conversation because I am second guessing myself and by the time I decide to say something the topic has completely changed. I hate being able to see both sides because I think it's weird often times I know what I think is right but also see another point of view. So glad to read this. Me also 9 but I don't like eating the same foods every day or sleeping at the same time, those kind of routines are not for me at all. I would say I live by my feelings and I need to do what feels right in the moment. Even for example the walk I do often with my dog, it really annoys me that it's always the same. I do have some OCD-related routines like needing to check things before leaving the house and before going to sleep, but that's out of anxiety, not out of enjoying the routine.

This is my strongest form of routine because outside of school I am all over the place but at school we follow the timetable and I understand that my year will be planned out for me. The outdoors is calming but not boring. Clutter can be stressful when it reminds me of things I need to do or want to do or whatever. People can be stressful when I'm anxious about keeping the peace and can tell when someone's upset. So sometimes it feels like it's either boring or stressful, but in nature it's full of different things, funny looking trees, different plants... none of which are stressful. I may not even be looking at them, but they're around me and it's different than being indoors. Also sunlight! The sky!

I try to do the good habits every day so I don't get out of the habit of doing them, even if I am on vacation, because it is SO hard to get started again. I drink coffee and listen to podcasts every morning, even if I have to wake up early to be able to have that slow wake up time in the a.m. I have one or two favorite items off the menu at each restaurant I go to., and will order those every time unless I make myself try something new for the sake of adventure. :)

I haven't always had routines, but as I've gotten older I have a morning routine. I turn on the coffee maker, grab my computer, check my on-line banking, check the news, new ancestry matches, Facebook, UA-cam. I do love the outdoors and the one that hits home the most: putting off what really needs to be done. Most of my life I haven't wanted conflict and I couldn't assert myself, but as I've aged, I'm getting more opinionated. One thing I notice: I REALLY want everything to just be easy, so when I find clothes or shoes I like, I buy more than one of the same thing. This also means I'll cook something I like and eat leftovers for 3-4 days. I almost always choose one restaurant and eat the same thing every time I go there.

Type 4 and I'm a tea addict 😂 I'm really needing my tea to be comfortable. I can go without breakfast but without tea I'm not ready for the day.
Also being barefoot and getting into my nightgown the moment I'm home. I'm safe at home and don't need to feel the "borders" of my body like I need it outside so I slip out of my form-fitting clothes asap.
The interesting thing is, I'm very clearly a 4w5 from what I learnt so far, but I really do go strong on the 9, too! 😂 I could relate to many things you listed. It's like a "if I wasn't a 4, I'd be a 9" and being and INFP, it makes a lot of sense to feel a close relation.

You said say things you do everyday, I eat cinnamon toast with my Boston Terrier, Rosie, for breakfast. She has mast cell tumors that came back after surgery and has not had them get much worse since we started eating cinnamon toast for breakfast together in 2017. I read that cinnamon cuts off cancer in the cell. She is also taking prednisone prescribed by her vet. I also wash my clothes after I wear them everyday, drink coffee, read my devotion, say my declaration and pray everyday. I have some nine traits but I think I am a 2. I go to 8 pretty quickly when I need to. I go along a lot with what other people prefer. I like to be outside if the weather is nice. I have dogs and sit outside on the patio while they eat and walk in the yard every evening. I usually can see all sides in an issue. I also feel the energy of the people in the room like a 2.

It took me a while to decide what my number might be but I kept circling back to the 9!.

Nine of the 10 are totally me. The one I am not is a procrastinator. If I need to get something done, I never put it off. However, during this current season of this pandemic, I see my list that I've made for myself not getting done. So in "normal" life, I don't procrastinate. In a nebulous time, can't get things done. Yep.

My morning routine is a must. Also I have certain ways I like to do things as if I am in the middle of a task I don’t want someone coming in and changing the way I am doing it.
I hate making group decisions. I hate conflict and confrontation but if it comes down to protecting friends and family I can get confrontational.
CAMPING AND THE OUTDOORS IS MY HAPPY PLACE
I def procrastinate and do the easy stuff first.
I get easily overwhelmed and then get anxious and toss my hands up and say screw it iwont do anything then I feel bad for not doing anything.
I also get overwhelmed if I have to many good things happening- like back to back weekend plans. I need downtime and alone time to recharge.
I can see all side of things which sometimes gets overwhelming too

I'm a 7 so of course we want everybody to be happy so I will do the whole, letting others choose but I am the same way. I know what I don't want to do. So, I will sometimes say pick 3 things and I'll decide (and hopefully they don't pick the 3 things I don't want) lol. I can often see everyone's side too but more often than not I get in trouble because I point out what the other person's perception may be...not usually what the person is wanting from me which is validation for their feelings.

Idk my type, but I can relate. In my eyes, if someone comes to me with a problem, it only makes sense to take the problem itself (even if it's someone else's behavior) as a given and start building on what that person can actually do to solve it or cope with it, but this way it's easy to come accross wrong, thus requiring you to act out an entire script to make sure the person feels you're on their side before you can start giving any real advice every single time. Then again, maybe I'm just a 5 lol but the exhaustion is still real.

Yeah I think type 9s are known for this. I do the same thing. I think because we're accustomed to putting ourselves in other people's shoes and thinking about things from different angles, we do the same thing here and see all the possibilities and ways we relate with the different types.

I took the test and scored equally the highest for type 2 and type 9. So for three years I thought I was a 2. But when I studied the type 9 I learned that without any shadows of a doubt I’m a 9. I seem to be more of a 9w8, but I can also identify with the 1 wing. But more dominant with 8 wing. I’m having trouble identifying which subtype I am. I resonate with social and self pres, but there are some things about the 1 on 1 that are there too. I’m having allot of trouble with the subtype.

Morning routine: I eat 2 eggs and 2 pieces of toast. I recently started swapping the toast with hash browns. I change how in cook my eggs. Also, I'm usually not looking to be outside, especially when it's hot (over 75 degrees). I procrastinate, a lot, and I put off the hard stuff deferring to the easy stuff. I do mediate at work and I can definitely see all sides. Often I say there is always n+1 viewpoints to every story/event.

Yeah as nines, we're stubborn. One has to remember we're in the head triad - and the types in the head triad have an issue with anger. While the 8 handles that by asserting control and the 1 wants others to conform, the type 9s deal with anger is by supressing it. I guess our stubborness and passive-agressiveness seeps out when the repressed anger isn't allowed to come out. :)

On every Enneagram test I’ve taken, I’ve placed as a 9. However, I feel like I’m somewhat of a chameleon because the only things I really, really identify with about my type is feeling invisible, tendency toward sloth, lack of career motivation, easy-going nature, and needing a sense of calm.
Although I dislike disharmony, I rarely have trouble finishing arguments and seeing value in constructive conflict. I also feel much more decisive than stereotypical 9s. I am agreeable with strangers and friends (perspective-wise), but in my heart, I know what I believe even if I’m not vocally asserting it. I’m really proactive with important tasks, but I’m sometimes too laidback with mundane chores. LOL

I feel like I aspire to be like a 9 sometimes since I want to understand all sides. I want to be able to be someone who can bring peace.
I think the big ones I related to were avoiding conflict, being stubborn, and feeling like I don’t matter sometimes or that I’m secondary. In the past decade I’ve had a harder time making choices and just let other people decide things since people usually don’t listen to me and I don’t want to make a choice I’ll regret.
I didn’t relate to all the traits though. I have to start with what I don’t want to do so I don’t have to worry about it later. And I find that routines bring structure. It helps me to be productive and feel like I’m doing something. Otherwise I will veg. If I don’t have any responsibilities I literally do nothing.
Definitely seeing the parts of the 469 tritype in play though.

I find it nearly impossible to figure out which type I am. I’m feeling frustrated at this point. I went from thinking I was a 5, to 4, to 6 and now maybe 9. But honestly, I don’t exclusively relate to any of the enneagrams. I feel like I’m a mix of 9 and 6. Growing up I was often anxious due to circumstances. I faced all me fears so I could find my inner peace and build a better happier life for myself. Then once I found my calm and grounding, I no longer want validation from others. I behave more life a 9 but have no problem asserting myself and setting boundaries. A skill I had to learned being on my own for 11 years. I’m wondering if the confusion comes from my life experiences and personal inner work I’ve done or if I can actually just be a blend of various types. One of the discoveries I made this past year are that my feelings matter. So I always remind myself each day “my feelings matter”. I feel like that’s a 9 thing. I’m just so confused at the point. I really hope I can figure this out because it’s driving me nuts not being able to figure it out. 🙈😱
