There are a zillion versions of this song out there, but this is my favorite. I think it's the first one I ever heard, and that's probably why. He's my all-time favorite musician.
A forgotten classic. Billy used to be able to write stuff like this in his sleep; songs about taking a chance, growing up and leaving parts of your life behind. Love this guy.
So many faces in and out of my life Some will last, some will just be now and then My favorite line, too. I've moved more than a dozen times, so this really hits home.
Probably my favorite Billy Joel song. About the time the live version came out there were some things going on in my life that made me relate to this song.
Heard this when I was headed back to prison in 1980...said goodbye to Debbie Domigos...I thought she was my true love...gone forever!!! Love This Song!!!
WOW. I was trying to figure out which version of this song I would hear and love as a kid growing up. I remembered clapping. So I’ve been looking through and listening to all these live versions. But it was the AUDIO version this WHOLE TIME. Ya bamboozled me, Billy. Lol, my ears can be at peace now.
“Say Goodbye to Hollywood” (1976) is a look at the temporary nature of most relationships, as people are coming in and out of our lives. The story is told through the eyes of two characters, Bobby (in the first verse) and Johnny (in the second verse). They do their time in Hollywood, but now find themselves moving on, a natural progression in the series of hellos and goodbyes in life. Musically, Billy Joel composed this in the style of The Ronettes. He was a big fan of ‘60s girl groups and loved Ronettes’ lead singer Ronnie Spector’s voice. In “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” he pays homage to her vibrato, emulating it when he utters the word “boulevard.” Joel explained that he wrote “Say Goodbye to Hollywood” in a high key that was challenging to reach. The tune was crafted at a time when Joel had recently moved from LA to New York. Like so many Long Islanders, he disliked the West Coast. Ronnie Spector released her own version in 1977. She stated : “In a way, it’s my life story, ‘cause I was married in Hollywood, I lived in Hollywood, my life fell apart in Hollywood, and now I am saying goodbye to Hollywood.” Spector’s cover was produced by Little Steven Van Zandt, whom she met while working as a backup vocalist for Bruce Springsteen in 1976. For “Say Goodbye,” Springsteen’s E Street Band reciprocally played backup for her. 💙🎶💜
THIS TRACK CALLED “SAY GOODBYE TO HOLLYWOOD” ORIGINALLY CAME FROM TURNSTILES, AN ALBUM THAT WASN’t BIG FOR BILLY. HOLLYWOOD HIT THE TOP 40 5 YEARS LATER. Kenneth Huang. 2/2/24.
Bobby's driving through the city tonight Through the lights in a hot new rent-a-car He joins the lover in his heavy machine It's a scene down on Sunset Boulevard Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Johnny's taking care of things for awhile And his style is so right for troubadors They got him sitting with his back to the door Now he won't be my fast gun anymore Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Moving on is a chance that you take every time you try to stay Together Say a word out of line and you find that the friends you had are gone Forever So many faces in and out of my life Some will last, some will just be now and then Life is a series of hello's and goodbye's I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Moving on is a chance that you take every time you try to stay Together Say a word out of line and you find that the friends you had are gone Forever So many faces in and out of my life Some will last, some will just be now and then Life is a series of hello's and goodbye's I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby Say goodbye to Hollywood Say goodbye, my baby
I remember there being a (minor) controversy about this song when it was released in '76. They said that this "live" version was a FAKE; that is was done in a studio, and that crowd reactions were added. Does anyone else recall this?

Billy Joel - Say Goodbye to Hollywood
大事な意訳部分
Moving on is a chance that you take every time you try to stay Together

Tribute to Ronnie Specter? Done Billy style....
Billy Joel e grande mi recuerda quando trabacavo in Algeria.
Billy's band was a real rock band on this album!
Now it's a show band...
This performance was from a rehearsal, not an actual concert...
The audience is dubbed over.
Live in Milwaukee.... sorry, wrong.

Billy's vocals during the horn solo remind me of Ronnie Spector lol.
Not a surprise, he said this song was inspired by the Ronettes "Be My Baby." Good ear there, dude.
And the drum part at 3:35 :)
