I am 38, and I've loved music all my life. For some reason I am discovering Billy Joel now. It is the same wonderful and special feeling as when I discovered the Beatles, The Police, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Elton John, Stevie Wonder... Each new song I find is a gem of music, feellings and styles. It's a wonderful experience that doesn't happen many times in life and I didn't expect it to have at this age. Thank you Billy Joel.
I first knew of this from the Tom Hanks show Bosom Buddies. And even when it first came out, apparently it was a smash hit in the Philippines because the same year in the Philippines this Filipino movie was playing it in the background. I thought that’s pretty cool that this music was that so well received.
A song dedicated to finding yourself and not letting people tell you how to live your life. Perfect meaning, and such a catchy song. Billy Joel is definitely a genius
Just bought 38 acres and plan to build a log house. I’m 70 and my hubby 73. All our friends think we’re crazy but it’s OUR life! This song is so appropriate! Don’t listen to the nay-sayers!! 😄👍
Sounds great!! I have 7.5 acres. I'm turning mine into pasture of wildflowers!! Do what I want. My husband died 2017 after being married for almost 50 years!! 💜✌️☮️
I feel the same. This is the theme of my freedom and independence. Every time I sing this song I am singing to all the people who wanted to dictate how I should live my life, to the ones that they wanted to impose their limiting beliefs on me, to the ones that bullied me, to the ones that hurt me. It’s my life.
Been there, done that. By 30 I had been to 29 countries. Joined the Army after college and never looked back. As Sinatra then later Jay-Z said, I did it my way.
Idk about depression, but I'm actually listening to this right now to help get over my social anxiety long enough to go into the kitchen and microwave some leftovers in front of my roommate. I think about this song every time I have to force myself to do something that makes me anxious and it actually kinda helps.

Amazing Song, it gave me a perspective on looking at my situation I’m going through with my daughter a different light, I feel free and less stressed about her now ❤️
My parents are being stressful right now, mainly my dad, but I couldn’t handle it and went outside to my car and turned the radio on. After just two songs this came on and I turned the volume up so loudly, it was like a sign from the universe that eventually everything would be fine ❤️ came here to listen again and comment ❤️ Have faith loves, things will get better I promise and never feel bad for taking time for yourself
Heard it tonight in the film Very bad trip. Made me want to listen to it again. Brought back all the memories. Great song❤ and say the right things to all those overpowering people. This song is so liberating
Although not intended, this is one of the most emotional songs for me. I remember listening to this song on the way to visit my grandad in hospital not thinking much of it at the time. After he passed, I was having a really bad day missing him and as I was walking home put my music on shuffle and this was the first song that came on. When I actually stopped to listen to the lyrics, in particular the chorus, I started crying it was like my grandad was telling me he was okay where he was and he didn’t want to come ‘home’. It comforts me listening to it as I feel like it’s my grandad telling me that he’s okay and that he wants me to move on and live my life to the fullest.
I went to his (probably the last) concert at Tokyo yesterday. This song was the opening song, and soon after he started playing the prelude, the audience got pumped up! It was one of the greatest night in my life and their lives who were there!! I’ll never forget the moment of the live forever.
My mother's favorite song. She introduced this song to me as a kid, and I'm forever grateful. Not only does this song also apply to me, but also, further, to people who I know. In a twisted sense, I'm the cause of others to feel this song to be applied to, as well. Yes, this song may be a testament to the philosophy, "Friends come and go", but we all need to go on our own path, eventually. Either way, this is a timeless classic.
I dedicate this song to a toxic online friend group who constantly stalks me after I wanted to cut ties with them. "I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life. Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone"
This song is awsome. The lyrics is so contemporary and the piano is just a ton of fun. Everytime I hear this song after a long time I go on a binge and spend a week listening. This week a dude at work was humming it and it stuck in my head. This was wednesday. Today is sunday and I've listened to it more times than I remember. It's always like this.
Lately those high piano key notes at the end of the song were coming up in my memory so here I am. Even though I never bought an album of his, I grew up with Billy Joel on morning radio in Philadelphia. Billy’s music was a huge part of my world growing up, and songs like this one and Allentown defined the mood of everything in my environment. The 90s was a total departure, and his presence waned, but he’s always going to be there. Captain Jack was another one that hit me at work the other day. I’ve got to tell you these are definitely young, restless songs about youth and the aversion to sacrifice without meaning, but I work a tough job now and I promise you it’s nothing like Billy’s songs if you’ve found your center and your life has yielded you some things. It doesn’t have to be a ‘dead end.’ That said, Billy’s songs serve more to me now, not as a cynical disdain for labor, but as a warning not to succumb to your narcissism - they’re more like examples of what happens when you lose the plot for a self-centered lack of imagination, which I’m happy to say is not caused by hard work and sacrifice, as long as you know what you’re serving.
My dad was more dominating than strict. It took me a long time and couch sessions to get me through most of it, but a lot still comes back to haunt me from time to time.
My mom was kind of strict. More of a sensitive soul but getting her pissed off wasn’t a great idea. My dad was the strict one. He had a tone that would make the hairs on the back of the neck stand up. He was pretty good with a boot in the ass or a belt on the ass but that was for rare occasions. Could tell he was from German ancestry, very much his way or no way.
I was 11 when I first heard this song. I remember it was and still is the most life affirming song ever recorded. This song and Movin’ Out(Anthony’s Song), another life affirming song. I’m 59 and I still listen to these great songs.
Thanks for my uncle to love music and played this when I was a kid! I can see myself at that moment I first heard it! I was jumping around enjoying it. Hanging out with my freshly out of the Army uncle. He hadn’t married yet! Not a miserable man back then. Bought his new camaro and dating his first wife. I remember they taking me to the park and being on the swings! I’m glad my aunts and uncle letting me Tagalog on their dates.
This song inspired me to learn English. I heard it on the radio in the US the first time I heard it, and I wanted to know what the song was about. I just love it!
I’ve been to dozens of concerts in my life. I’ve seen DMB 15 or more times, which incidentally is not much considering some people see DMB 15 times a tour. However, when i see Billy Joel, it takes a month or longer to get his music out of my head. I saw him a week ago on 4/23/22 in CLT and he was amazing. I had his LPs and 8 tracks (and cassettes) when I was a kid.
These words always relevant......wish I could have said these words to those controlling ex family members when I was young......be strong y'all.......well done Billy Joel!!!! Bless❤
This is all-time favorite song from Billy Joel.😀 It's vivacious and soporific at the same time.😀 In contrast, it's my life, too!😊 The part from 3:40-ending lights me up like a bank of stadium lights!😊😀

Born in 81. Bosom Buddies introduced me to Billy Joel at a very young age. 43 now and I still listen to Billy on the daily and so do my fuckn neighbors!!!! It’s still just rock n roll to me
Such a great song. I'm glad I got to grow up in the time I did, to be able to discover all of these amazing songs on the radio and MTV. Growing up in the 80's was truly amazing.
I moved to Calgary in 1978 with my brothers and mom. I remember we played this song once we got our stereo back from getting fixed. cranked it up. I was 17.
During the 80's, I had this Walkman and cassette tapes of Billy Joel, so it becomes one of my favorite singer along with Elton John, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and Spandau Ballet. 80's is the era of great music and until now it became a classic.
I'm 47 and finally cutting off my toxic mother after almost 50 years of abuse. It's taken this long to even work out how abusive she is and what she's done to my head. There's actually nothing wrong with my head but my body is so full of tension (and a bit wrecked from drugs & alcohol, trying to cope). It's her who needs a team of psychiatrists. Covert emotional abuse can be worse than obvious abuse and go on for a lot longer. I hope this helps someone ❣️
I also cut off my toxic mother when I hit 43, I decided that I could no longer tip toe around her constant criticism and demeaning me in front of others because she is a mother. Her ego is such that she admits no wrong and expects her children to acquiesce to her always. I had fucking had it and have not spoken with her for over a decade. Do I miss her, not at all. Do I love her, not sure. However, I refused to live the remaining possible half of my life unhappy. All the best.
proud of you. i feel you so much. people always say oh you have to love your mother don't matter what. fuck that. we must choose ourselves and being happy at all costs
@@zoe5154 thats the road to more depression i think.you must forgive her.the fact that you realise what mistakes she had done makes you emotionally smart.and when you see her parents and their mistakes on your mother you will understand why she was acting that way.understand, forgive, move on without hate.that feeling really can eat a healthy man alive by its own.

I have always liked this song. It is a song with substance. Billy Joel didn't minced his words in this song. Just told it as it was. Total honesty.
its crazy how everyone in the comments have entirely different reason why this song speaks to them - from toxic parents, shitty friends and relationships, to pursuing careers and lifestyles those around you disapprove of. it takes a great songwriter to be able to tie so many experiences together
Yes ! Your’e right
This song means more to me now that I'm older
I sang this song around my mom all the time after I turned 18 hahaha, it bugged the hell out of her after a while, but she got the message.
nice.
Nice subtle hint there lol
Kids !
real mature
I have written a song called This is my life. It’s about deciding what you want in life and going after it! ua-cam.com/video/GoYLxG1LMiw/v-deo.html it would be amazing if you could give it a listen and comment your thoughts on the comments of my UA-cam videos 💕🎶💃
Me and my son right here on Monday listening My Life . He is just 3 year old boy and love this so much. Thanks dear Billy
i have always loved billy joel's music. that new york coolness he exudes. italiano also. i consider him an american icon and treasure. love from new zealand billy.
Got to love those Beatles-y backing harmonies. Such a rich production, without seeming overstuffed with detail.
Amazing Song, it gave me a perspective on looking at my situation I’m going through with my daughter a different light, I feel free and less stressed about her now ❤️
I DONT CARE WHAT YOU SAY ANYMORE THIS IS MY LIFE!!!
Dun dun dunnun dun
Go ahead with your own life.... LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!
ビリージョエルの曲のなかでは、「ピアノマン」の次に好きな曲。 アップテンポのリズミカルな曲調がいかにも ビリーらしい新境地を感じさせる名曲。
Was so hyped to hear this in Joker 2
My parents are being stressful right now, mainly my dad, but I couldn’t handle it and went outside to my car and turned the radio on. After just two songs this came on and I turned the volume up so loudly, it was like a sign from the universe that eventually everything would be fine ❤️ came here to listen again and comment ❤️
Have faith loves, things will get better I promise and never feel bad for taking time for yourself
It doesn’t have to be a ‘dead end.’
That said, Billy’s songs serve more to me now, not as a cynical disdain for labor, but as a warning not to succumb to your narcissism - they’re more like examples of what happens when you lose the plot for a self-centered lack of imagination, which I’m happy to say is not caused by hard work and sacrifice, as long as you know what you’re serving.
The liberation of this song is TIMELESS, you hear me?!?!?!
I’ve grown up my whole life listening to Billy Joel and as I got older I realized how much this song reminds me of my father
I don’t care what anyone says this is MY #1 Billy Joel song
This is the anthem of every young adult who had strict parents growing up 👌
Or a certain older sibling who knows that her way is the only way. 😂
My dad was more dominating than strict. It took me a long time and couch sessions to get me through most of it, but a lot still comes back to haunt me from time to time.
Strict isn't bad. Domineering is.
Or toxic relationships
30+ years since I’ve heard this and couldn’t agree more. We’re all going to the same place no matter what anyone says or does, so yeah.
This reminds me so much of my dad when he played this on his 8 track in the truck when I was a kid. Now I'm 45 and love this song so much.
It’s been nice Arthur. See you in the next life.
Тоже услышал? Молодец)
He gets out the car st the exact right moment in the song!!! IT’S MY LIFE! Go ahead with your old life!
Yeah. May the Joker rest in peace.😅😢
The best song to maintain your peace of mind!
This is a rocking tune. The instrument beats are insane.
i never understood the power of these lyrics until my 40s! I FULLY GET IT!!!
Joker 2 brought me here and im happy it did 😊
Well, at least something good came from the movie…
I was 11 when I first heard this song. I remember it was and still is the most life affirming song ever recorded. This song and Movin’ Out(Anthony’s Song), another life affirming song. I’m 59 and I still listen to these great songs.
this is one of the most beautiful songs written in rock´n roll history.
Billy Joel is one of my favorite american singer mainly with this song.......
This song inspired me to learn English. I heard it on the radio in the US the first time I heard it, and I wanted to know what the song was about. I just love it!
That’s amazing! Your English seems great and I hope you are learning well! 😊
@BillyJoel-ys4fwI am good. Thanks for asking. How are you?
Billy Joel one of the very finest artist in music .
Reminds me of Paul McCartney & Wings. It's a Fantastic song. BJ hit this one out of the park. Thanks for posting!
All this man did was put out hits and classics all the time literally all Fire!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥...Salute to Billy Joel🎯💯
Gracias Billy por regalarnos tan bonitas canciones
Probably the best album ever made. Inspired me for almost 50 years now. What a genius.
Bless❤
......a girl that learnt the hard way from down under xx
I don't care what you say anymore this is my Life Go ahead with your own life leave me alone.🎉
This is all-time favorite song from Billy Joel.😀
It's vivacious and soporific at the same time.😀
In contrast, it's my life, too!😊
The part from 3:40-ending lights me up like a bank of stadium lights!😊😀
If anyone is reading this:
You aren't "too" fat.
You aren't "too" skinny.
you aren't "too" ugly.
you aren't "too" annoying .
you are perfect the way you are. Just dont listen to anyone else. This is you. This will forever be you. And i hope you are as proud of you as i am!❤️ i love you!
i love you thank you be safe
Stop with this crap some people are too fat and like me some people are too skinny
@Jack Bergman many people are telling other people they should change their Lifestyle. and the Song says "this is my life" thats why i wanted to spread some positivity!
@@thelegendkillersshittyduff1335 i'm sorry, ofc there are people who have weight Problems wich could cause death, but many people are also "normal weigh" but get upset bc people telling them their not good enough. i just wanted to spread some positiv words for people who have to hear stuff like "you are ugly" "you are too fat" (even of their in a perfect weigh). sorry if that bothered you!💗 also sorry for my bad english! i'm from germany
Thanks for putting semi-random positivity out there! ALWAYS a great thing to do! Keep it up!...Please
Born in 81. Bosom Buddies introduced me to Billy Joel at a very young age. 43 now and I still listen to Billy on the daily and so do my fuckn neighbors!!!!
It’s still just rock n roll to me
This Was my ringtone for years!
Such a great song. I'm glad I got to grow up in the time I did, to be able to discover all of these amazing songs on the radio and MTV. Growing up in the 80's was truly amazing.
It was a great choice for the TV show 'Bosom Buddies' too, with Tom Hanks & Peter Scolari.
What a wonderful tune, caught him in concert in Greenville!
J’adore
I moved to Calgary in 1978 with my brothers and mom. I remember we played this song once we got our stereo back from getting fixed. cranked it up. I was 17.
Crazy!! My whole life changed when I moved to Calgary at 19 and started listening to this kind of music!!!! Billy Joel forever!
@@SoundHealer93 DID YOU COME from Ontarible, I'm from Owen Sound?
懐かしいですね〜! いいですね〜!
Please let music like this last forever in the passage of time.
lasted less than 5 minutes for me :(
During the 80's, I had this Walkman and cassette tapes of Billy Joel, so it becomes one of my favorite singer along with Elton John, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and Spandau Ballet. 80's is the era of great music and until now it became a classic.
How good was the old days
Did anyone's Walkman ever eat their tape?
@@christopherfletcher5384 , IT ALSO HAPPENED TO ME A LOT OF TIMES WHERE YOU HAD TO USE A PEN OR PENCIL TO MAKE THE TAPE USABLE AGAIN!
I dedicate this song to everybody
I'm 47 and finally cutting off my toxic mother after almost 50 years of abuse. It's taken this long to even work out how abusive she is and what she's done to my head. There's actually nothing wrong with my head but my body is so full of tension (and a bit wrecked from drugs & alcohol, trying to cope). It's her who needs a team of psychiatrists. Covert emotional abuse can be worse than obvious abuse and go on for a lot longer.
I hope this helps someone ❣️
Look forward to tomorrow.
Proud of you
I also cut off my toxic mother when I hit 43, I decided that I could no longer tip toe around her constant criticism and demeaning me in front of others because she is a mother.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
There are certain entertainers who touch us, depicting our lives perfectly. Why did you captivate me Billy?
This is my Childhood right here 🙏
Even if your mind is confused, your heart always knows the answer.
... desde pequeño al escuchar estas notas musicales las asocié con una noche de luna llena por encima de algunas luces en la calles. Nostalgia pura.
I remember OF this song as a kid listening on the radio. Now i am still enjoying listening at 53. Billy gave us a lot o great songs. What a great musician.
