    Hi Zac & Ben,
    Very nice work, she is really coming along nicely!! The bulkheads, cabinetry, paint are just wonderful.... Hard work pays off!!
    I'm amazed that you guys have jobs and still find the time to do so much word class work on your sailboat!!!! Most impressive!! Heck I'm retired and can't seem to get all I need done on my Falmouth, I'd love to sent y'all some pictures when I'm done, I've only had her for a little over as year and still haven't got it all done!!! I made lots of headway ...but many more work days to go!!
    Never give up!! All y'alls dreams Will come true!!! So impressed with y'all, love your channel!!!!
    Fair winds,
    Doug

    Thanks guys, I'd think for you this would be a much more exciting time. The project is coming together and looking good. Now you can really see progress. To me all the time of tearing out and pulling apart would be really depressing, I've so enjoyed watching the videos and am now looking forward to seeing her back in the water.

    This boat is about YOUR dreams. I am thankful you are sharing them. I think it would be cool to finish the boat and trailer to Florida. Do the rigging and a few shake down cruises and then sail back home. Sounds like an epic way to start the journey.
    Certainly some things are easier done at the dock than in your shop, but once you are at the dock, that special tool you need is no longer a trip down the ladder. It's a long walk down the dock to your car and a frustrating trip in traffic back to the shop. Try to do as much as you can in the shop before launching.

    You are doing great work and making steady progress - looking real quality.
    Before moving from my base and resources I would want to conduct a ‘fast cruise’.
    1. Step Mast and Rig the boat.
    2. On a wind less day bend on the sails and hoist (one at a time) rig running lines and set each sail in turn and prove winches.
    3. Prove navigation lights (including mast head light) and all instrumentation possible (including wind instruments).
    4. Unrig Mast with standing rigging and prepare and stow ready for transport.
    5. Rig water supplies for engine cooling and stern tube.
    6. Run engine, check all instrumentation sensible. Leave running until engine thermostat opens and then shut down.
    7. Put water in all areas of the bilge and check flowing through limber holes. Prove function of automatic and manual bilge pumps.
    8. Embark and secure anchor chain, mount anchor.
    9. Embark 4 mooring warps (bow, stern and 2 springs).
    10. Embark 6 fenders.
    Then it is a matter of organising the move, embarking safety equipment and the domestic must haves (beer).

      While seems like a great idea raising sails on land is always a bad idea in my eyes. If this is don't I reccomendnot only a day with no wind but make sure that boat can't go anywhere if it really wanted too, like really get it attached and stable. I wouldn't do this though, put it in the water and rig it at the boatyard, not sure how far you are from it but maybe a trailer of tools if that is really a problem.. ?

    My personal opinion is.....It's your boat, do whatever you think is right. Be sure to get the electrical done before you launch tho, like nav lights etc....She's a sweet lookin lil yacht already, may you have many years of fun on the high seas with her.

    Good call on not spending forever fairing out the rudder...maybe if it were a full on race boat you might gain hydrodynamic boat speed and balance...you're cruising, time is more valuable elsewhere. Good work, cool project, enjoyed from when you where bailing her out in the marina.😀

    definitely a cool idea to bring it to FL. The rudder isn't Sail Life 100% spiffy, but it's more than adequate to do the job :) Hope your spring is starting...we got sent home from work early due to snow storm yesterday :) Can't wait for spring/summer to start. Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan

    Only advice I can give is about the draws. The one with the tape measure in it that you open and have to hold up once it is open, put an extra piece of wood to act as a rail above the draw when it's in the closed position. Then next time you open it, you don't need to hold it up as the draw will brace against this rail.
    Best of luck with the rest of it. :)

    You guys have been doing a fantastic job on the restoration project. I'm looking forward in seeing the completed project as I'm sure you are As well. As for the drive to FL your actually looking At a couple of days doing a non stop trip. It'll take you 18 to 20 hours just across Texas. For the sailing I've done in Socal I'd go for the launch in FL. You'll have more access to warmer waters.
    Keep up the good work. As always I'm looking forward to your next video. Thanks for sharing the progress.

    Love your Videos! Thanks for posting them. As far as getting the boat down to Florida you will need stuff like tools and other supplies that you have at home, it can be frustrating being so far away. But if you get things a ready as possible before you go and schedule in a home trip at half way point it can all work out.

  • @stevenmilby7888

    I suggest you fair the depressions in the rudder. As the water flows over its surface, any roughness creates drag and any depressions or humps create turbulence. Turbulence will have two effects. It'll also create drag and you'll feel the turbulence through the tiller, which will vibrate. That vibration will soon become annoying to you, and you'll ask yourself "why didn't I fair that rudder?" Great work!

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  5 років тому

      That would be annoying. Looks like I might be doing some more fairing.

    You could launch in FL, maybe somewhere on the Easy Coast (Jacksonville), then do your maiden voyage around to the West Coast stopping at marinas and towns along the way doing UA-cam viewer events as you go. Do stopovers at Ft Lauderdale, Miami, Key West, Tampa, Pensacola as fundraisers for the project and get to know fans of the series. You might ask your favorite local breweries to sponsor refreshments. Who knows what could happen?

    I recommend conducting "sea trials" in known waters nearer your "home port." Once you finish the trials, and fix/tweak the discrepancies, then you could do some serious sailing. As someone else noted: Let your boat take you to FL.

    You used to have beautiful access to your engine and mechanical systems, putting all those cabinets and doors down below is going to cramp that access. LOL
    1. Now would be a good time to put some conduit in to allow for future installation of wires, pipes and hoses.
    2. Why aren't you making your drawers longer, all the way to the hull? And your cabinets too.
    3. Find a place to put your boat BEFORE you take it to Florida. And then let your heart and budget be your guide.
    You have done a great job so far, keep up the good work.

    You can use that space to hide electrical components and probably install a WiFi thing there! Hey! Stuff a small PC in there or something that can connect to the internet while out at sea! That way you can upload videos on the go. Maybe the components of a radio can fit there too? Idk I’d say something for internet or communication tho :)

    Excellent work! You have come a long way from that video where you were ripping out the totally rotted interior! Depending on where you are located (mid-Atlantic?) I like the idea of getting her ready and rigged out (Awesome that you have a rigger friend!) Launch local and let the maiden voyage be a leisurely coastal trip down to Florida, putting in each night either on the hook or a marina. ($$) Keep up the great work. Best to shake it out near home, fellas. If she’s solid, then bring her on down. I’d recommend the east coast of FL if you’ll be day sailing because the water is so much prettier. The gulf is a bit more predictable though.

  • @mazdarx7887
    @mazdarx7887 5 років тому

    Space behind drawers! Just make drawers longer. I would keep the boat close to home until it's finished, much easier to do work and can be hauled home if something major needs upgrading/repair. It happens all the time. you get the boat a day or two away to it's new berth and you need something at home. Get as many bugs out of the boat and things installed before you move it far away.

      Assuming my memory serves me correctly and you are on your own property where you are I personally would be inclined to try and get everything done where you are before launching. In my experience progress generally slows when starting to use something when you've only half done what you'd planned. Particularly if you need to travel a fair distance to get to it as it sounds like it is.

    Sorry, just some ideas... It's your boat after all.

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  5 років тому

      I think the door would hit the ceiling as it opened if it had a curved top as the ceiling arches down to the sides. There may be room but I'm sure they would have done that if they could when they built her.

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  5 років тому

      I don't think we did a very good job explaining the plan. I'll elaborate more in the next video. But basically we want to do some cruising before hurricane season and towing the boat to Florida would give us better access to better cruising. And would it be a lot safer then trying to sail there directly and a hell of a lot faster then taking the ICW. Nothing is set in stone at this point though

Just a Thought.....I'd use that Space for SOMETHING, as well the space behind the stove...You could make some smaller sheets of fiberglass panel to cut into shelving/dividers, and Beef Up your storage space a LOT....

    Just keep in mind that with Murphy's law, that Murphy was an optimist. Best to count on nothing working out as planned, the nearer to home you are, the more of a support network you will have available.

    make that cabinet top so it slides out and you have a spot to hide stuff of value while your not on the boat secret compartment

    Consider putting butyl tape around each screw hole. Butyl does a better, longer lasting job than any caulk. It is probably too expensive for the whole toe rail. With butyl do NOT screw the toe rail down tight. Leave 1/16"-1/8" of space and then come back and caulk that. I think it will last much longer and if you want to re-caulk in the future, it should be easier.

    I wouldnt worry about the rudder
    On workboats these things are like humongous shafts with rusty flat plates for a blade
    unless you see yourself battling around the buoys with Courageous
    it just aint gonna matter

    Where are you placing the freshwater ,waste water tanks and fuel tanks?

      Thinking about going with a bladder for water for now. Fuel tank is under the cockpit. The waste water tank will be tiny and in the vberth somewhere. I'm classifying this as a "luxury" item. I've heard buckets work real good. Thanks for watching!

    It was never meant to be a fast ship, so the rudder wouldn't make a difference, don't worry about it

    Do all your work were you are so you don`t have to pay out more money. for berthing fees in a marina and splash her near to home so you don`t have travel time added to your day. its always best to be near home so you have all your work tools at hand. there is nothing worse than to try doing a job and not having to tool you need to finish that job

    With all the toe rail removed and repaired, why would you not take the opportunity to coat at least the underside in epoxy? This would virtually eliminate the possibility of any rot for the life of the boat. I understand the arguments for not coating the exposed areas of the toe rail in epoxy. But the mating surfaces would seem like a good idea. These is a tiny little criticism because your work is really fantastic.

      I wanted to bond to the wood directly. I don't like how epoxy peels off of wood when moisture get under it. At least I think thats why I didn't do it. I did consider that route though.

    Your putting the cart in front of the horse. Worry about getting it ready then worry about the launch. Things change over time
