I know this is an aging video now but man what good fortune. That is in way better shape than any free boat I have ever seen. A free Catalina 30 that requires minimal small task items to have tons of fun. You have been given the dream of many. Don't play it down so much. Lots of folks would consider this boat the opportunity of a lifetime as a boat of this caliber is otherwise out of reach for them. Be happy.
We love our Catalina 30.... 1983 MK I Tall Rig. We got her for free 18 months ago. We re-engined her, replaced all the plumbing and countertops and sinks. All new Garmin electronics.... too much to list here. We got caught in a gnarly squall on Long Island Sound last season, and she performed flawlessly. She’s a beast of a boat. A lot tougher than you’d think for a “coastal cruiser”. Super comfy and roomy for a 30 footer. If you keep yours, you’ll fall in love! P.S. Make sure you re-glaze and re-seal the windows! Catalina Direct sells a kit.
I had a Jaguar 27, (1974) which was actually really a Catalina 27 made under licence in UK. It was beautiful and a great boat to learn on, very sea worthy but forgiving of a clumsy beginner. I hope you enjoy every day with her
I have had a Catalina 27 and two Catalina 30's. I love these boats. I find it very roomy for a thirty. The engine is crazy easy to work on. You can even remove the kitchen island and it provides even more access to the engine. Its easy to sail and forgiving. Comfy ride for a 30 thanks to its wide beam. More Catalina 30's have been built than any other so there are so many people that still own them (like me). There is a huge online presence and people have added so many different options over the years. I think you will love it. I own two sailboats. A Macgregor 26X for trailer trips and this for comfy days and nights on the Chesapeake. I plan to sail the 30 up and down the east coast, from maritime Canada to the Caribbean. Not a boat for crossing the Atlantic, but for sure it handles coastal sailing with ease.
The amount of info and availability of parts for these boats is very refreshing coming from an older boat fore sure. It does seem like a very comfortable boat and I think the wife will really like that! Excited to sail it!
Maybe almost 7000. It’s also in the Sail boat hall of fame. Frank Butler the man behind Catalina Yachts just recently passed away. Any owner could call him about any problem and he would call or talk to them personally.
Ben, you can come out and race with us again and get all the sailing experience you want anytime. I've found racing is a great teacher. You're out in conditions you wouldn't normally go out in (like the race you came along on), there's almost always close encounters, and you have to trim the sails to direction you need to go, not go the direction you're trimmed for. Another nice video, liked seeing Bill and Sea Gypsy in it.
I'm a huge Catalina fan! I had a 1974 Catalina 27 for a number of years. I terribly miss having a boat! I'm hoping to have my own in the coming year or 2.
The absolute best way to learn sailing is to volunteer and crew on your local beer-can weekday (PHRF) race boats. Racers are always looking for crew and you will learn what makes a boat go fast, what boats can handle, and make friends in the sailing community. Catalina 30s are great family cruisers that are well made production boats. Very strong user association, and Catalina Direct has all the parts you may need. They are a tad slow since they trade room for performance, but that is no big deal. Your old boat has much more character and style. Since you are redoing the interior you have the advantage of looking at efficiencies of modern day designs and incorporating those features in your CL.
Survived a nasty Salish Sea 60 knot storm in a C30 and was knocked down twice and boat rounded up on a dime, saved my ass and have had much respect for them ever since. Would love to have one to puddle around the Carrib in. How in lord's name do you find a free boat in that kind of shape?? I wish!
Congrats on your "new to You" Catalina. They are pretty good boats. I had a chance to sail a bit smaller version and it was awesome. Having 2 boats simultaneously could be challenging time-wise but I hope your family and friends will help. And I love your fancy toys )))) Way to go!!! Going hi-tech )))) Terrific!
I wish I knew the good people who gives boats away for free. I would not even think twice. Hope the previous owner feels better soon and finds the strength to finish his other boat. 💪
I was given a Pearson 26 for free, also offered this same boat a Catalina 30 for free but moving the Catalina was a problem . Would have liked the C30 more but free is free and the Pearson 26 fits lake sailing a bit better ( least that is what I keep telling myself )
@@strietermarinesurvey1415 I'm in Europe and visit marinas often. Unfortunately, here I haven't found any such deals yet. Owners here always want money even for those vessels that are falling to pieces. I understand that in some situations it may actually be cheaper to buy a new boat than restoring, but I really am dreaming of restoring.
The Catalina 30 is a remarkably strong boat and quite forgiving, underestimated for a number of reasons, but when compared to others in her range, one will be surprised. There is a Catalina 30 owner's fleet in Kenah. They meet at least once per month and offer considerable experience and knowledge specific to the C30, including just about anything one needs to know from engine work, the hull, rigging, etc. Almost every Harvest Moon Regatta, a 150 mile off-shire race in October from Galveston to Port Aransas has at least one C30 and they come home with good results. The local group is Fleet 10. Next meeting is first Saturday in April, 10:00 at Waterford clubhouse (their March meeting was today). See you there!
I have been reading a lot of good stuff about them for sure. I really want to do the Harvest moon the year. Maybe I’ll stop by the next meeting. Thanks for the info
No such thing as a free boat, of course, but that one looks a lot better than most of what I've seen... Looking forward to seeing you add this into the mix! Your CNC router looks really cool! You might want to think about buying a dust collector at some point. WAY better than a shop vac, and would help with any other woodworking tools, including the spindle sander you were using...
You are so very fortunate to get a yacht for free, I would love to be in that situation even with the work that's needed id give my right arm to be in that position, well done and love the video mate, and the thumbs down people, get a life.
I like the part of this video where you have someone advise on solutions of problems they had. Case in point the declamation of drawers, fix without rebuilding new. I'm sure you did that too. I just don't remember see it.
Oh hell yes! I bought a new 1982 Catalina 25.. the 30 was my dream boat but I didn’t have $60,000 in 82. Awesome boat. I got to sail a Choi Lee 48 catch back in 1980. That’s a great boat. But take the 30. Did it come with a trailer! Is it a tall rig with a wing keel ? I’m 69 now and can’t anymore so do it while you’re young!
Good score I have been on the lookout for a deal like that but every one I find is beyond repair for less then the value. That looks new compared to some I've looked at. Heck that looks new compared to some $5k boats I've looked at
I second the "Smile" comment. Also, I dock in the same marina as where that C30 was. Tonight I was just watching a spate of Sailboat videos to get motivated to work on my Baba 30 all weekend, and ran across your channel. Thought I would drop you a note. BTW - Nice Shop!
Hello there, it’s Walter from California, and I’m a moment from being homeless. I’m looking to live on a boat. I’m currently working on a friends house while staying there. I had been renting it over the last 7 years but since the COVID-19 AND A JOB SHUTDOWN. I’m looking for a new Direction. I’ve always had a dream to own my own boat. End the end, I’m hoping to find the right boat that I can fix up while while improving my selling skills. Thanks for your Channel.
Keep the Catalina for now. The commitment is for as long as it is fun. When the slip rent gets to be too much, sell it and move on. The boat looks to be in pretty good shape over all and with a little SailBros magic it will be even better.
That automated router could be a money maker. I see a few people including myself that need to replace their ports but you destroy the trim in the process. I didn't know what I was going to do. I thought about having stainless sheet machined on a water saw. But if you can make teak trim I would be a customer. I ended up just patching, filling and painting the teak and living with it. Cheoy Lee Offshore 33 Ketch.
I’m definitely looking into making some money with it. That trim is tricky. I destroyed most of mine removing it too. It was so thin from being sanded over the years anyways. I’ve been trying to figure out how to remake the trim for a long time now. I think this is going to work though. When it comes time to replace your trim let me know. Maybe I can cut some out for you!
Hold the tiller extension like a microphone and put it on your lap. This will take a bit of getting used to bc I saw you holding it up and like a frying pan. The reason I say this is it’s just a better way to do it and you will move your rudder less. This will make you go a little faster because it reduces drag when you keep your rudder as straight as possible. Also you will sail straighter and have an easier time reacting to puffs and shifts and waves and things. If it’s hard to steer with a tiller that’s called weather helm. You can adjust the tuning of your sails and the boat to fix this. You may already know all this but you said somewhere you don’t have a ton of experience so here’s a few tips!
As you said, no boat is free. Someone will have to pay something. I really like the CNC machine. I could use that for a lot of things. I have a 1978 Columbia 10.7 which I'm restoring. Lots of part could be replaced. Good luck
It's kind of a nice problem to have, there's always the option of trailering the boat to your property and eliminate the marina fees. Having it close too the majority of your tools etc will definitely enhance the repairs schedule if any.
Good things happen to good people! Can you tell me how much standing headroom? Is the headroom highest in the center and taper off on the sides? A Catalina 30 may be my next boat if I can stand up in it (I am 6'1). Thanks!

You're right about that CNC router as bad ass. I was just thinking about custom finish trim for my Hunter 32 interior. That would be perfect! Maybe we could do a deal?

Second, take a US Sailing or ASA basic keelboat course. Your local power squadron will also often provide free safety and skill classes. Catalina 30 is a miracle boat. Tons of fun, sails well, acres of room inside. There’s a reason they sold about 6500 of them.
Holy mackerel, can you imagine them all lined up, 6500 of the buggers!? That's staggering mate - thank you for that info.

yes take the free boat. Catalina 30 are popular. they're like the Toyota of sailboats

The wooden windows look very professional. But will they be waterthight? And what after couple of years. I prefer marine windows.
The windows are adhered to the outside of the cabin. They are watertight. I'm just adding a trim ring to the interior to finish it off
You're right about that CNC router as bad ass. I was just thinking about custom finish trim for my Hunter 32 interior.
That would be perfect! Maybe we could do a deal?
Maybe! Let me get all of mine done so I’m a little better at it. I definitely want to put the cnc to work though. Send me an email sailbros89@gmail
