The whole thing about not liking this update but having to accept it hits hard. Just goes to show how powerful corporations can be when there is no competition. They can do pretty much whatever the fuck they want.
There is competition, but people are too lazy to want to go to Odysee or Bitchute because it isn't UA-cam. Because alt tech platforms don't have Google money, people aren't willing to go there because it isn't as quality as UA-cam.
Content creators won't move there because advertisers aren't there. Advertisers aren't there because the audience refuses to move there. And audiences won't move there because the content creators aren't there, along with not wanting to change their normal watching habits.
Remember when people went to multiple websites on the old internet? Now people only go to the same, sanitary, silicon Valley sites and expect them to not corrupt with the power those people give them.

@@Just_a_Tool i agree just don’t use UA-cam. If your gonna use UA-cam and it sucks then you have to accept it or stop using the platform. If your looking for tutorials just browse the internet for guides or look through forums. If you want news do research. You shouldn’t sacrifice quality for convenience, and if you do go for convenience, it just means you don’t care enough about the subject to look for it. It sucks but UA-cam doesn’t want to be a great platform nor do they have to be.

all the comments are people ragging on youtube for things THEY have done... you all DO know that youtube is just a name. it's owned by Google and has been for years now. you want someone to blame? BLAME GOOGLE. all of these decisions over the last 5-10 years have been theirs.

The ending is basically spot on. People are content enough with just accepting whatever the platform throws at them for not even thinking about the consequences those changes may have.
Imo a video platform like this has become a crucial part of people's lives at this point, and decentralization would be the best solution for issues like the ones youtube keeps creating in order to have more control and money.

The scary thing is, with UA-cam censorship nowadays this seems 100% legit.
They will come for the comments. Sooner or later they phase them out. First maybe you'll see just a selection of positive comments and they hide the rest and you need to select an option to show all of them. Then maybe they start to disable commenting by default on small channels without yt partnership. Maybe then the whole comment box will be converted to some annoying popup that will be hidden by default and they discourage you from reading comments by making it uncomfortable to turn on. Then commentjng rights will be given only to those who are properly authenticated with personal data... or just to premium users. their options are endless to silence you
@@varkonyitibor4409 They've already done this. Comments used to be chronological instead of arbitrarily sorted and selectively shown. For live videos, "top chat" is on by default instead of live chat (whatever a "top chat" is, idk, but it hides messages). Thumbs down on messages haven't even been tracked for a long time now. @@varkonyitibor4409 They're already starting. When you make a comment that they don't like it get's removed. No notification, nothing. No idea what you said that triggers it. I've had comments disappear that I put some effort into and I cannot figure out why they were deleted, one was advice to someone about macronutrients so it's not like it's offensive. The filter is getting stricter as well.

It's exactly what every sane person says it is. A way to protect content thieves, scammers, clickbaiters, and TWH establishment in particular, from being called out. Hiding like/dislike ratio wasn't seen as "enough", since doing so used to rightfully out the creator as a coward and a fraud. UA-cam's policy is to protect those who prey on gullible, while making it impossible for people in the know to warn potential victims in advance.
They themselves prey on the gullible by making them codependent of the platform, against all forms of change because their now fishbowls for brains can't bother with moving on.

then they started testing hiding dislikes on videos, and I was chosen
I sent feedback saying I hated the change
and a few weeks later it was back to normal
I thought that meant they'd listened
I was wrong
The hiding dislikes on comments I more or less approve of, the bandwagon effect is strong, just seeing a comment on -1 likes makes you much more likely to dislike it, and it can really ruin someone's day if they wake up with -20/-30 dislikes.
note that the same applies to videos, but it's not the same, first UA-camrs know what they are getting in when they upload a video, but much importantly, a video is potentially more dangerous by a wide margin than a comment, and get much more visibility

@@astracrits4633 honestly i do think they have a point; regular comments can be posted by anyone and mass disliked if you, let's say, say something AGAINST what the video says; esentially disliking a dislike. So i'm unsure on whether it'd be better to keep the counter on comments or to remove it. Remember reddit has dislikes on coments, but that doesn't stop it from being a cesspool
However, removing the dsislikes from videos is a whole another story, you are *removing* someone's ability to express AGAINST the content of the video, which is really bad...

You know what change that UA-cam made that I _really_ dislike (besides them removing the dislikes)?
The ability to make notes on the videos on your playlists.
If you noted the video title and uploader of each video, it was a really good way to keep track of them whenever videos were privated/deleted, since the notes would remain.
But UA-cam removed it because “nobody used the feature”.
I’m still mad about them doing that…
oh speaking of removed stuff. i still remember how it was very simple to make subtitles for random videos. it was so useful not just for vids in languages i don't know but also because i have some problems with hearing, so even my native language or english that i know well enough gets very hard to hear sometimes. but with people offering to translate or just add subs to different vids meant that i could enjoy the content without missing on anything. i even translated a couple of vids myself :)
now idk. is it removed? is it hidden somewhere in the useless junk in the options? i couldn't find it, and like. it's just sad. it was (is?) a cool feature

There really needs to be an alternative to UA-cam. I know there’s been attempts at it, and it’s incredibly difficult to achieve. But at times like this, it would be great to put our money where our mouths are to say and boycott UA-cam and move to a competitor. Anyone working on a UA-cam alternative out there, keep at it, it may become successful given how UA-cam keep stabbing themselves in the foot

Well, it’s comforting that someone finally explained what’s going on.
It doesn’t even matter where you stand politically, everyone just fucking hates how authoritarian and monopolized this platform has become. We literally are getting our means of expression slowly but surely taken away from us, and there’s nothing we can do about it without a competitive alternative showing up. We’re forced to interact with this platform if we want to watch and support our favorite content creators, and that gives UA-cam an undue level of power over us, power that is currently being used to exploit us...

Thing is, if we accept change, if we accept that there are alternatives that (maybe not as polished but) give youtube the middle finger when it comes to freedom of creator and viewer alike, then we may see an influx of creators moving to better video hosting sites.
But that is the thing, not many people think that there are alternatives, and many just don't bother to search for them. No exceptions.
Till the day comes, we will suffer the monopoly of this site, being fed from our laziness and general indifference, with only a small group defecting to the other side.

This is so true. I only get low quality (short) content, reaction vids and reuploaded/stolen content recommended, just because I clicked once or twice on these type of videos. Can't find anything decent anymore except for the content of channels I have actively subscribed. You really have to dig deep to find anything valueable on UA-cam. This platform morphed into another Tiktok despite existing longer on the web. Instagram too. Everything becomes so shortlived. No wonder so many suffer of ADHD.
Daily reminder that as of this year, Google can put ads on videos of all creators, even if those users haven't enabled ads. Users with under 1000 subscribers cannot enable ads, so Google pockets 100% of the revenue versus 45% on videos where the creator has enabled ads.

On the other hand, their business impacts the businesses of many others and so they should be taking into account not only how something directly impacts their business or their stock holders or sponsors but also their partners, content creators and viewers. I guess I forgot that Google's a megalithic monstrosity of a business much like Facebook or Amazon and can do whatever the f they want to do, regardless of how dumb or oppressive it might be, regardless of the negative impact it will have for everyone overall.
