UA-cam as a company has seriously gown down the drain over the years.
Yeah, their quality really went down a lot.
But at the same time they're a growing monopoly

It really is quite awesome seeing the community come together!
It’s an incredible first step, glad to see UA-camrs like ThioJoe work on the scam bot problem. Kinda weird how Google isn’t doing it themselves though.

@@lunar5355 oh thank you and I hope you will enjoy. Hopefully with less and less spam going forward :)
1 year later and I'm wondering how it is going.
Would love to hear about that
As you went through it explaining, I already really liked how through this whole thing was as a moderation tool.
But when you got around to the ability to scan foreign content and mass-report spam my jaw hit the floor at hyperlight speed. That's such an incredibly obvious, but just as easy to overlook inclusion into this kind of app that really elevates it from a "neat little community tool" (the type that large platfrom's APIs are usually spedifically made for), into a genuine weapon to actually fight the problem. Awesome to see that Thio thought that one step further and ended up creating such a powerful and versatile tool.

Yeah, sounds like an actual move youtube could do...
Please don’t jinx it
Is that before or after noticing increasing numbers of folk using scripts like ThioJoe's then blocking their ability to work properly because they' decide they should be detected as bots or something? Instead of them just using all the resources and computing power they have themselves to do the job properly.
This sounds so out of whack and stupid that google might actually do it. Google likes doing out of the ordinary stuff no platform user will benefit from after all.
it’s so nice to go to comments in this video and them not being full of spammers replying:’) haven’t had that for more than a year
This is absolutely fabulous. Totally support and I will be running this periodically on videos where I notice influxes of spam comments to mass report. Far faster than reporting individually, which I've been doing for quite some time, and is particularly laborious!
It's definitely a "wouldn't" on UA-cam/Google's side. They have hundreds of developers with tens of years of experience on all the UA-cam coding environment and they could pull something like this as optimized as possible in a snap of fingers
100% - there's got to be something that benefits THEM from the spam. Maybe "engagement" metrics? Who knows, but they definitely won't do it properly. But they DO shadow-ban your comments at random, which always sucks...
Like Thanos
It's a big company decisions take a long time to get implemented
Actually, this is so simple and already technically implemented (because is youtube api) that i wouldnt be surprised if they just missed it.
It's amazing. UA-cam deletes my comments constantly, but I still see spam from actual bots everywhere. Blows my mind.
This is amazing! I am really happy big creators are getting involved in fighting scams. I can't believe UA-cam doesn't do more, removing the Dislike button was the single dumbest thing they could have done, and quite frankly, I don't understand why disliking comments does nothing as well.
To be fair, they didn't remove the dislike *button*, but made it next to useless.
My guess would be that any kind of engagement (be it positive or negative) means more klicks, more ad revenue and thus more money for UA-cam. They would be stupid to stop spammers, if it reduced their own income...
yes
Mal you Rock!
pretty soon they'll also start prosecuting and putting in jail "pirates" (thats those of us who run ad blockers).

@Erik Müller I don’t think so since they could’ve just removed them for that video specifically. Plus I doubt UA-cam cares that it’s once a year video gets disliked.
Amazing info all-around. Glad to know this stuff exists! Hopefully UA-cam will do something with this program or a version of their own.
This is quite a great idea, a problem that I can see with it however is that the report feature can be easily be abused and as Linus mentioned it's easy to bypass the api limits by simply using multiple alts (according to TheOutcastVirus it's also possible to do so by creating multiple api keys) such that it becomes a matter of numbers in the reports of good/bad comments, which has the potential to effectively render the report useless.
Thio seriously deserves a medal while LazyTube continues Its downward spiral into shameful incompetence.
Shameful incompetence? You mean fantastic engagement metrics that earn them and creators tons of adsense money! Why would youtube/google want less money, especially when there is no downside other than a few youtubers making one or two useless videos complaining about it? I can't imagine anyone thinking this would go the other way somehow. This platform grows based on engagement, just as any social media site, it doesn't matter that a majority are bots sharing malicious links, as long as there is engagement, there is ad money. The only people that are getting hurt are children and normies that click the malicious links, and youtube isn't liable for that. Reports and complains are a drop in the ocean and don't even make a blip on the nearest human youtube rep's radar, lol.
It would actually take all of the largest channels to all come together and stop making videos for something like this to change. That will never happen.
@@evolicious is this a copypasta
@@thelagmaster9741 it's true tho, youtube doesn't do anything because it doesn't need to
Exactly right. I mean...come on. When was the last time that UA-cam came up with a quality feature update? Considering how simple it was for Joe to make, I'm leaning towards Google making the decision to not take action on this...
@@zhongxina6621 This is entirely not the point.
I'm leaning toward "won't" because this problem is stupidly simple for the type of AI that Google regularly employs. And if you've ever had an experience with Google moderation before, you probably know that they're worse than awful. I once reported a fake SpaceX channel full of nothing but Muslim videos to pad it out and a few Bitcoin scam videos to sucker users. The moderators didn't see anything wrong with the channel and told me I was wrong to report it! Last time I tried to be helpful....

Awesome video, Linus!! It's so great that you brought attention to ThioJoe's amazing creation!! You guys are both the GOATs of tech UA-cam!!

This guy's got it.
You are a genius
Or comments are already sheduled for removal, along with dislike button.
Bingo. I see the same thing with bogus spam clicks on my Google Ads. They win either way so there's not much incentive to fight it.
I think their sorting also pushes those comments down so that most users won't see them and if most users don't see them it's not an issue for them I guess

It’s an awesome intro
Love that you guys have a passion for what you do. Thanks for the vid. Keep it up.
As a software guy, I don't think it's computationally expensive to run these checks. They just don't...
It would be en masse, but if you're YT, I would think the storage gains of being able to drop a non-trivial number of posts would probably make it worth a little more CPU time. Especially if you developed a scheduler to run it as an idle task that uses available processing power in between demand spikes.
This totally feels like a virus scanner from 1991, but for spam.
Honestly, I'm impressed. Not with how effective it is, but the fact that the dude who made all those tech prank videos actually made something genuinely innovative and useful. I'll probably still think it's a tech prank every time I see one of his videos in my feed, but at least we got a useful tool out of him.
I really like how ThioJoe made the script very friendly and clear with the colorings on the text. I hope that more scripts out there do more like this. I'm looking at you Linux.
hell yeah
Many things on Linux are "less friendly" because one of the major things about Linux that its users love it the ability to chain programs together and use them in scripts. So many programs try to find a happy middle ground between human understable and parsable via script or other programs. However, many programs actually have separate "interactive" modes, or will behave differently depending on whether or not its output is being sent somewhere else for further processing, so yes, Linux programs have fancy colors and stuff too. And for the standard programs that don't, most people don't care. But that's the beauty of Linux and open source. If you do care, replace those programs with ones that behave more to your preference. For instance, the default cat program doesn't have fancy colors, but there's alternatives that do. And the current cat program has grown some new features over the years that some users consider "bloat", and there's simplier versions to suit those people's preferences. Whatever you want, someone's made it. And if you don't want to take the time to configure it yourself, someone else wrote a set of automated config scripts. Wanna take the plunge and do it manually? This guy wrote a guide on his blog.
Agreed! I always spend a good chunk of time optimizing my scripts for user-friendliness, I think it's important.
Huh, a comment section not filled with spam actually makes me want to comment. Great job, ThioJoe!!

The Api Quota limit is tied to the application rather than per user. So the "army" idea I think won't work as well as you may think. I may have a bit of experience here xD.
application = API key. Every user in the "army" has their own API key so it would be like an army of users with their own application
Yayy thank you for promoting this!!
Super helpful. Thanks for bringing attention to this guy's awesome tool!

You did that on purpose right? I liked that, it's on theme, due to the content of most spam
Is that the awesome tool in the emails at 1:02?
Let's all say FUCK YOU GOOGLE ALPHABET
Knowing how UA-cam got rid of community captioning, which was a huge use for Deaf/Hard of Hearing folks AND creators, and most other useful community tools, my guess is on won't and wouldn't.
What a cool tool!
"but we have a nice tool that does it for you"
-YoUTuBe after 3 companies told them that they won't buy ads placement anymore due to some kid adding some shite captionning to a video
If people spammed bad captions put the captions up for approval by the channel first?
There can be a possibility for using google translate on it to do a quick verification that the text is genuine in languages you don't understand.
Lazy bums. Community subtitles were how I translated educational videos into my language.
The features probably broke and the diversity hires couldn't find a way to fix them.

This is an amazing script! I’m going to start running this in the background at work on all my favorite content creators!
Nice one, ThioJoe. Another win for the community.
We all know UA-cam's response to this video will be to lock down the API that makes this possible.
After all, UA-cam _is_ known to be the smartest company out there

You forgot, also state that small creators complained as the justification.
@@eideticex They like to use 'users' or 'accounts' rather than 'creators' most of the time, as that lets them remove tools that are Highly Useful and Widely Used by creators, on the basis that 'only a smaller percentage of users' use a feature... the sneaky part here, of course, is that everyone with an android device has a google, and thus youtube, account, and most of them (well, us, I fall into that category myself) don't Create anything on the platform!
They'll come up with some bullshit excuse about "small creators being harmed by mass reports" and get rid of the whole thing.
Pet peeve: people reading scripts saying they or their company "can't" when the truth is they "won't".
The sad reality is both are true at the same time. The bigshots who have nothing to do with the product decide for whatever reason (or lack thereof) that they won't, therefore the rank and file grunts who do the work and rely on them for a paycheck can't.
They did thi on purpose. Spam generates movement. Movement generetes movement.
And even more movement. The more the better. For YT adds of course. No matter what kind of shit does this. If it moves - it pays.
No company would ever admit that they "can't" or "won't" do something, they'll just ignore the problem or point out an alternate "solution"
There's a Smarter Every Day video about this where he (IIRC) interviews the UA-cam Spam team (at least the Facebook and Twitter Spam teams). It's actually easier for channels and users to do the reporting than for youtube itself, because it sees a huge volume of comments and is extremely valuable to game. It's also unclear when comments aren't legitimate when the actual content itself is unknown. Like we know that mentioning Crypto on LTT is probably spam, but on a crypto news channel?
In any case, the mass reporting (assuming we check the comments are rubbish) actually makes the spam detection easier for UA-cam.
UA-cam 'won't' filter spam link comments because their filter system is already jammed up filtering "hate speech" (an extremely nebulous and extremely political term) and switching it back to filtering actual spam would mean that their political enemies would "win".
i sincerely hope this video gets to yt headquarters, this is an issue i've had with comments for such a long time
6:25 uno stormy out there like FREE SHOUTOUT
The whole "This is so easy I'm surprised Google/UA-cam/Facebook/Anyone I dunno hasn't done this yet." thing is just not surprising anymore given how little of a shit these companies give
Exactly!!
Seeing how much UA-cam favors it's advertisers, it's not really a surprise now that they don't care about their platform. It's all about the profits
This is a bot guys. Perfect example of what this software WON'T filter out. 😊. If you get my drift relating to paid for subs, views, likes, comments. Look at Linus's sub to view ratio for this video alone 😉.
There is no reason to improve things if a given company has a monopoly.
mybe start calling out all those vertify tag abusers first
I just love it when the community fixes problems that Google won't
*won't.
If one self proclaimed novice can do it, so can a multi-billion dollar company.
@@MrRandomallthetime thanks for correcting me 👍
it's a trap! they're fooling the community into a sense of stronger community so as to like their platform more! /s
Google's in on it and Linus got the same thought, judging his reaction at the end.
UA-cam makes them lose money, I heard?
Praying that at some point UA-cam finally addresses this issue!!
this is beautiful! I hope Google will not limit the API calls any further, if this becomes more popular.
8:33 its actually not 10k calls per day, but 10k "units" worth of calls. That page shows a breakdown of how many units certain actions require, but basically you're getting even less calls than you expect.
I can already see it coming. UA-cam is going to weigh the API-call reports lower so that the effectiveness is going to be reduced. Something something anti bullying....
"To prevent users bullying our servers, we ..."
@@xmine08 lmao
Yep, there's a reason they've done so little so far.
I have a feeling the extra comments make google more money (showing advertisers that the videos with their ads got more engagement, or that the site overall has more user activity than it really does)... You know, that stuff that looks good in a PowerPoint full of stats, which is why it's not new to cheat those stats...
I know right
ty linus i watched this and at the begining you said you can restore the dislike button. didn't know it was possible so i googled it and its working great cheers for the tech tip really helps when looking for engineering explanations on youtube for my degree.
Yes we are finally taking the fight to the spammers, imagine if this dude could make the same thing for twitter and instagram
Next month UA-cam update:
WE ARE REMOVING REPORT COMMENT FEATURE
Funny, TheoJoe led me to this channel years ago because of that double your internet speed video. I thought it was crap and I then watched Linus' video on how he doubled his legitimately, that caused a vicious cycle of watching everything on his channel and I have been an avid watcher ever since. That was 5-8 years ago (I don't recall exactly).
That table flip "yeet" emoji for nuke mode had me reeling lmao
Fun fact: I've tried to recommend this tool to other channels 17 times, and each time my comments were instantly deleted. I'm glad someone big is finally bringing attention to this.
As a software engineer with a lot of relevant experience in a large company, I don't think it's UA-cam willingly ignoring the issue. People are bad at big numbers and many of the larger platforms are so large it's difficult to really wrap your head around the scale that you're dealing with. A minimal increase to a computational task that gets executed hundreds of thousands of times per second easily balloons into large absolute increases in required computational power. That said, I don't think that is the issue either.
I believe the real issue to be one of sustainability. When you're making filtering changes that affect a massive number of people, you have to be confident that they work with very few false positives. This analysis takes time, so playing cat-and-mouse with spammers using entirely heuristical approaches like Thio's aren't great: either your reponse is too slow each time the spammers switch their tactics to get around your filters or you change things too quickly and get false positives.
In the same vein I don't think it matters that the tool's logic is obfuscated to slow down spammers. Reading through filtering code is one way to get around things, but an arguably easier way is to hook up a fuzzer to it and see what gets past it programmatically.
With all that said I do think it is a good tool and will help UA-cam train their spam algorithms, at least while its popularity is below the critical mass for spammers to start working around it.
Think it's just like the justice system, better have a suspect walk free than an innocent person in jail. So better have a spam comment show up than a normal comment getting deleted
I am a software engineer also. Filtering spam is orders of magnitude less work than managing and serving a video library. Their spam filter for Gmail is top notch, it is extremely rare for me to see spam in my inbox, and don't get false positives often. There is no reason YT should be a haven for spammers. Their "misinformation" team is on overdrive, censoring free speech with lightning speed (despite having facts to back them up), yet spam comments run rampant. I see comments all the time, with clear, unobfusticated "whatsapp" and "only fans". They clearly do not care.
@@championxxlNL Normal comments get deleted all the time, if you go against the narrative, spam comments roam free.
Tbh, I don't think youtube would care about removing or even temp shadowbaning as little false positives as they can, especially that linus said in video that they ban a lot of mobile comments that dont break any rules/spam.
Especially with the way they treat creators that often get copyright striked for nothing ect, so why would they care if an innocent comment gets banned either.
I don't know why youtube didn't implement something to stop these spammers, especially that a lot of them could have been banned extremly easily just by having w.a. number in these bubbles after their name or at the end of a comment (wont give an example since linus is running now the script but u know what I mean) and in such cases false positives would have been pretty much pure ZERO, so there is something very wrong with youtube's lack of reaction to this almost like it was intentional.
@@xeridea Also to that respect, false positives happen incredibly frequently. I've seen major UA-cam channels get auto deleted by AI before someone at YT realizes their issue. So arguing the point of "We would need to maintain/test this before using it" is invalid. No-one would care at all if one or so comment gets falsely deleted. But whole channels get removed... I see no reason other than they gain something by letting spammers run free.
I hope ThioJoe continues getting the recognition he deserves
That's pretty sick!! Nice one Joe.
i never thought i'd witness the ThioJoe charachter arc , this is amazing
When the community is fed up with UA-cam's broken system, they will do it themselves. Good job Thio. You did everyone a favour.
now we just need a community made platform like youtube but good XD
Ironic when u realize all top comments here are UA-cam verify tag abusers. their comments get pushed to the top and they usally post good-willed comments just to get subs from kids. Until UA-cam doesn't remove vertiy tag (automatically push their comments tot he top no matter what they post) the UA-cam will stay broken. 509% of channels on youtube are boosted. 50% of good willed comments on youtube ar either bots or sub booster. we turned content creation into business.

Hi Linus, small programming channel here, please DO NOT create an army of fake moderator accounts. This is definitely a violation of YT's ToS and could get your entire channel deleted. Doing anything to avoid the quota system is a big no-no. If you need more quota, pay for more quota.
Not only has UA-cam not done this, but I won't be surprised if UA-cam puts a stop to it.
