They removed it because people are starting to actually think that disliking is same as bullying. Its a normal thing to express that you DISLIKE something
@@meowpoosaymeow no
@@meowpoosaymeow bruh that’s literally why you have comment section to determine why the video is getting hate. And you can sort through newest, timestamp and top comments to find comments you want to find easier.

So you need both like & dislike rating plus the comment section aswell.

It's almost hilarious how much of an effect removing dislikes has already directly had on me as a single user. I don't just watch videos by UA-camrs I'm subscribed to, I look up tons of concerts or old recorded audio and it was always an immediate instinct (been on YT since 2007) to look at the dislike bar to see if the quality of the video is just awful, clickbait, or those oh so great slideshow videos of an event that happened. Dislikes are NEEDED for tutorials, to easily detect scams, and to counteract fake news on a website where anyone can post anything.
just read the comments it’s not that hard
@@mrichards There are problems with that, especially in tutorials. A scammer will typically have a lot of fake profiles which he'll use to flood the comment section with "It worked, thank you!". Sometimes it's not easy to differentiate these from genuine answers and even if you manage to do that, it takes time and energy. With the like/dislike ratio, you see it immediately.

6:09 with regards to DIY there's a lot of downvotes on some channels that if you followed what they're doing, and you then replicated that to the structure of your house you'd actually severly damage your house structurally, like putting cement mortar in an old house instead of lime mortar etc (like literally thousands of dollars of damage causing structural movement etc). Working in architecture this is really important for people that want to carry out proper repairs and not get scammed, as well as checking whether their tradesperson is a genuine tradesperson and not a paid chemical product shill selling chemical treatments that don't actually work. This is the worst thing they have done!!
This is actually pretty cool, we can preserve shitty videos as shitty.
@jshowa o It'll stop working once the API is removed but at least there will be a db of a few videos dislikes for history's sake
@jshowa o The whole stated purpose of removing dislikes was for creator health, but I don't see this as doing that. As you have stated removing the dislike is just going to send people to the comments so they can flame war each other. It's much easier to get a general idea of a videos quality without tasting salt through dislikes imo.
@jshowa o yee, personally I will just always lean towards more options/user freedom.
@jshowa o it will be removed from the API but its still available in their private API, which even works for videos where rating is completely disabled.
@KillerHawk "creator health" man that is such bullshit honestly if you just want to watch a good tutorial you look at the dislike count if it's low it means the video is good or if you get to a fake/bad tutorial you instantly know not to waste your time. Pretty shitty on yt part to do this
Just downloaded the extension, my life is now a little bit better thanks to you. God bless
Before anyone starts freaking out about the thing not working right now, I want to remind you all that this has happened before and tends to usually end up getting fixed. It might be a bit before the dislike extension works, but that doesn't mean it won't work again.
no wonder i can't see the dislikes rn
My proposal to UA-cam is that they could add the "show public dislike" option... Oh wait, there's already an option for disabling ratings even though it does literally nothing because you can still see the count in the video management and this is the part that they forgot about. "It's to help small creators and lower the amount of targeted dislikes" but it's not actually going to fix a problem, it's only going to make more issues.
Hey, it's effective censorship. It's far more effective at this than their bullshit "small creators" excuse.

The same logic applies to every scam video every tutorial that could be a waste of your time or amazing and more.
Exactly.
that's cause it's a lie
This excuse certainly has a nicer ring to it than 'It's to protect large corporations and media outlets and make it easier for them to sway public opinion'
i think UA-cam removed the dislikes because since people can't see dislikes, they sometimes have no urge to press it
The 4368 Users, who disliked it:"NO, DON'T RETURN DISLIKES! THEY ARE USELESS!"
Me:"Ah yes, the Velma Trailer is mostly disliked."
Been using this for around a year and its great, really happy someone stepped forward and made this when he did
This is why competition is important. A site like UA-cam who has a monopoly can basically make a sub-brick, universally hated move like this and get away with it scott free.
They know we’re stuck here. They know there are basically no real competitors. They can do whatever they want.
I think you're neglecting to realize why their competitors have been growing in the latest years. It's shit like this that helps the competition grow. No one ever gets away scott free with unhappy customers. This is another nail in the coffin.
Which is wgat governments like from these tech companies.
Im whaiting to leave as soon as i can
Platforms come and go, but creators will never go away. When UA-cam inevitably goes under, there will be another platform, far more resilient to corporate bullshit... In the meantime, install your ad blockers.
Once a competitor has a decent mobile app, I'll prolly switch
Thank you so much for this video! I support this project all the way. Removing the dislike button counts to me is the worst thing UA-cam ever did. I hope they bring it back...
Has youtube ever listen to its creators? I mean big creators are telling youtube to bring the dislike button back but they refuse.
they wont
It just shows that UA-cam can be controlled by government
Dislikes are good, but community captions were an accessibility feature. I don't mind as much that they care little about their users, but caring little about their deaf users specifically is just not on.
Don't forget 2018 rewind
Awesome! Bravo to the creators that made this add on! I love it! 👏 Thank you for showing us this!
just refreshed my page, this is incredible. thank you
Protecting content creators from 'dislike storms' is the most asinine excuse ever for removing the dislike count, even if taken face value. There's no such thing as a "dislike storm" because why would anyone bother to dislike anything if they didn't actually dislike the content or the creator, or both?
It's the tried and true method of using an innocent victim as a shield to enact unpopular policies. Think of the small youtube creators!!!!! 🥺
I mean there are cases of people disliking a video for the sake of it but first of all I don‘t think that‘s a widespread problem and can‘t content creators still see the dislikes anyways?
I mean if they couldn‘t they would have a pretty hard time to figure out if their viewers liked their video or not which doesn‘t really help them make good content.
Plus it won’t even “protect small creators” because they can still see their own videos dislikes.
Also since the dislikes are disabled, people are now more likely to comment their dislike instead, which is probably worse since people can say some pretty nasty stuff in comments.
Pretty much only happens when "DRAMA" youtubers send their fans to reeee at some tiny channel.
Which, comments will mean it still happens.
So sick of UA-cam’s censorship, it’s great to see the community doing something about it.
Without dislikes, it will be easier to fall for a scam.

As a university student during the Pandemy, being able to watch the like-dislike ratio was amazing to quickly see which videos were worth to spend time with while studying.

create a platform with easy-to-import youtube videos (by one-click option), find a way to embed youtube videos so you can still watch all the videos you want + the videos from the new platform; then add monetarization via ads (but not too much like youtube does) to it, give 90% of that income to content creators (which would be a better payment than youtube has to offer) and voila!
im in the same boat, youtube knows they have a monopoly and we cannot avoid using their services because its the only one :(
I just find it funny how they removed the dislikes to "protect the mental health" of the people making the videos and yet the people making them can still see how many there are.
It's not about the creator being able to see it.
@@wasd____ it’s about silencing opinions that are essential to content creation
@@supersunman6056 Creators being callously mobbed by haters isn't "essential to content creation." Making good content doesn't require a dislike counter, and having one won't somehow magically stop bad content from being abundant anyway.
@@wasd____ I know but from what I've heard thats the reason THEY gave for removing it. I upload videos also and I can literally go on my video dashboard and still see how many likes/dislikes there are within seconds.
My only issue with removing dislikes is that now if I look up a guide or something and the video doesn't help at all, I can't determine that based on likes/dislikes ratio.
If a video has 90% likes but 10% dislikes its probably decent. But if it has 10% likes/ 90% dislikes I have no way to see that and I'll likely waste my time watching it.
@@wasd____ Dislikes almost always come with a reason. While some may seem to appear spontaneously, “dislike raids” are very rare. If you disagree, feel free to provide the most recent example that you have witnessed.
A low like/dislike ratio can motivate creators to create content that people enjoy, thus yielding more likes and less dislikes.
Removing dislikes forces people to use comments to reflect their opinions instead. This can either negatively affect the creator’s health much more than dislikes could, or leave the viewers to be completely silenced by deleting or disabling comments, which only brings more issues, including the possibility of misinformation not being addressed.
While content has not changed much at first, the ability for misinformation in the forms of scam videos and enforcing an opinion on viewers will have less of an obstacle to their spread, as people will be less aware which videos are legitimate, and such misinformation can easily become popular from likes alone.
To summarize, dislikes have many causes besides plain hate, they present motivation to creators by reflecting the viewers’ opinion, and they provide a measure against malicious content becoming popular.
Good stuff! Great to see people getting together against shitty corporations :)
Sometimes, I need to watch "how to" videos, and the like/dislike bar is the first indication I get on whether this video is useful, accurate or has misinformation. And it BLOWS now, because I have to scroll down and read comments in order to substitute that... Which doesn't always work. Some practically useless videos will still have positive comments, which, don't really comment on the quality of the video or the information in it.
This has made finding guides on things harder...
Sure, the dislikes doesn't ALWAYS represent if something is accurate, some people believe in pseudoscience and/or other crap. But having that like-to-dislike ratio is like a first red flag.
This solution works for now, at least... Thanks for showcasing it
As a small creator, this is an absolutely ridiculous and highly insulting decision to pretend its to protect small creators. It's about corporations and nothing else. I watch a lot of tutorials for video editing and the Dislike button is the most important metric to see if a tutorial is worth investing in. Absolutely shameful nonsense.

With how unstable UA-cam's monetization system has become, most creators either use Patreon/Kofi or have their own sponserships now, so there's little to no reason to not get an adblock. UA-cam really has orchestrated its own downfall.

Even Brave browser is a good option. But not that safe.
But yes the deal is that you screw your safety when having to have a add-on installed. Or in the case of Brave a hole browser. Really with the cookies and possible exploits in the "content" you have to display on the screen, a add-on might be safer in the long run. But really safety and trust is thrown out the window when even having Chrome or Firefox installed on your machine. Just being on the web is bad enough you know. And really at worst this add-ons are tracking where and what your watching. And by that the *content* dose that anyways so really you give up very little in the end for removing all the bullshit.
I always have to remind myself that watching TV is hell. It is insane! I even got the *content* removed on my phone. But it is really janky and often is a battery drain/slows down the browser allot.
@@TheDiner50 I've never read a comment so well-stated and thorough in the replies. Thanks, and you're spot on about forfeiting safety by simply using browsers, especially Chrome. Thanks yooo this helped me a lot on watching tutorial!
Your “apples to oranges “ comparison is pretty good.
If a content creator doesn’t want you to know that the majority of his viewers think his content is thumbs down, he will definitely not want to volunteer that info. That’s like before, when I see some videos with comments disabled or thumbs disabled, I just skip it.
It’s like a call from “caller ID blocked” it’s a giant red flag that you don’t need to hear what this person is saying.
Yeah, but sometimes my curiosity gets the better of me and I decide to watch it anyway just to see what the big deal is.
Except for vids classified as "for kids" which have comments auto disabled, I dislike most videos with disabled comments. I do make rare exceptions for particular subjects.
Honestly don't know why they removed dislikes other than protecting corporations or government accounts. If anything it harms the platform because dislikes can be used to gauge how legitimate a video or video's content is, so if the comments are disabled, there would be little to no way to check.
At some point, I hope the comment section won’t turn into a “predictable audience.”
If people can’t say the video is bad, content sucks, creator is cringe, etc., then only the same dull pack of followers remain.
Who would want to see the same thing over and over again without the trolls, lols, and roars from 13 year olds?
UA-cam has changed and it will continue changing.
I just hope I won’t accept mediocrity 10 years down the line.
@@displaynockker9822 same
If a comment section is disabled, its always best to just click off the video, especially now that you can't gauge the dislikes :/
@@KaiserMattTygore927 that's true, just kinda sucks that they're removing public dislikes
"f anything it harms the platform because dislikes can be used to gauge how legitimate a video or video's content is" It doesn't matter. Protecting corporate or political interest has much higher priority.
Now let's bring back the Star system
Man I am soooo glad i found out about this I honestly thought I would never see the like/dislike ratio ever again
Absolutely supporting this Project!
UA-cams whole reason doesn't even stand. As a creator you already had the choice to hide the like/dislike counters on videos. Hiding just the dislike count only creates problems. Besides, how is it supposed to help smaller creators, if they can still see the counts? It's only to protect big tech and goverments from their $hitty videos...
Exactly, the one person who was supposed to be protected by this is also the one person who can still see dislikes. But this is about stacking the deck in favor of the corporations, who already get pushed to the front, while smaller creators may not even end up on the first search result page if you search their exact video title. Because none of those crooks can compete in a fair market.
The like count is COMPLETELY fucking useless without the accompanying dislike count. Twitter is full of toxic children because there is no way to give quanitifiable negative feedback, now UA-cam will be ten times worse. UA-cam is run by dishonest slime.
If you agree with the above statement, put a version of it wherever you think its appropriate. Videos about dislikes, responses to yt shills, etc. UA-cam is intent on this change, and the only way it will ever be reversed is if we raise awareness and instill the sentiment that this is unacceptable in as wide a user base as possible.
they want people to watch, they won’t see dislikes and won’t see how the video is viewed by others, and more time -> more money, their focus on small creators isn’t supporting them, just showing ads and collecting the revenue because they’re not a partner. Thanks, susan.
The supposed reason is probably because since the dislike button doesn’t display the amount of dislikes, people are less likely to use it, so when the content creator goes to check the dislikes it won’t be as much as before.
If you put on a "small creator's" video lets say 20 dislikes and 5 likes and new people will see this 5\20 dislike ratio - they won't watch the video.
But if you don't see dislikes - 5 likes ratio doesn't look too bad.
That is the logic behind removing the dislikes, not some abstract "creator's stress" as so many people somehow believes
(Don't get me wrong, I still think the change sucks, just maaaybe there are 1 or 2 people who actually were dislike-destroyed)
View/Like ratio will become the new dislike. They’ll have to remove the likes next.
It's still off since people without a account can't hit like.
That is exactly what return-youtube-dislike is planning on doing once dislikes are disabled from the API on December 13th. They are going to start using the like/view ratio along with historical scraped and cached data to estimate what the dislike count is for a given video.
@@tonygamer4310 once they nuke the like then YT will be dead trash and I’ll only go there to tell normie youtuber creators to leave

@@Klimotine kids exists
But the thing is those channels will probably have private like counters and comments
It doesn't protect creators, it actually does the opposite. Most people would just give dislike to video and move on. But now, they (or should I say "we") might consider to express negative opinions in comments instead.
So yea, prepare for more comments like: "Don't waste your time on this trash video" etc.
Absolutely true! After this change my hate comments have shot up! They used to just dislike and move on. Not anymore! Weirdly; they do criticise legitimate concerns in my videos like how my audio is a bit rough (people never commented that before) but of course they're angry and snotty about that! With "This f###ing sucks! Get a better mic" "Your audio is F###ing terrible!" So yeah, now I get more meanies hating on me more than ever.
Can't wait for UA-cam to disable the comments too
Maybe then we can truly "protect" small creators
they can hide your comments by hiding them based on custom keywords such as bad, trash etc. Make sure to say b...a..d or t..==r==a.=sh instead of 'bad, 'trash' as it can filter it

*also yt: "dislike counter will still be visible to creators in their dashboard - if they want to"*
i found this out myself but damn this went viral great video!
Thank you so much for this! God bless!
The most annoying thing to me about removing dislike counter is that the "DISLIKE" text takes up twice as much horizontal space beneath the video title. So now I have to scale the website down a further 8% in order to be able to see the upload date that is automatically hidden when it gets "too tight". I'm only doing a 50/50 double column layout. Hiding one of the most important page elements is kinda sus...
Hmm... I wonder if that's the reason I've seen some videos that appear to not have an upload date - even before the dislike count was removed. I thought maybe it was a glitch, or maybe there was an option for the creator to hide the date, but maybe it could have been because that area of the UI was too cluttered with options such as Donate/Thanks$ and Clip✂️, etc.
This, I hate this so much. Why does the most useful information disappear first? I'm sure there's a reason, I'm sure some youtube committee decided it was in their best interest to do that. I can't think of why it would be though. But every single change is now carefully caculated to bring the maximum benefit (profit) to youtube so you know it wasn't just a random UI design choice.
If they remove comments then I'll stop using the site I swear
same thing with me! I thought the reason why i couldnt see upload dates on my laptop was because i don't have maximize the window completely, but seeing more people comment about this is definitely sus.
If you think that’s bad, in dutch the dislike is called “vind ik niet leuk”. That takes up some space

@@TheIndignified they are saying that people use the dislike COUNT as a scoreboard to see how much hate they can drive to someone and people stop without the count.
Or in English: people don't use it because it does nothing, plus it is literally a fun game to see the ratio of dislikes and likes when it comes to Neutral response.
The mere idea that this was done because they "cared about creators" is completely out of the picture, not even a debate over there. They did for the interest of the big traditional Western media conglomerates, corporations, and of their own media communication.
5-8 years ago, you were wondering why the big news outlets are starting to have a presence on YT, even if they're already on TV. 3 years ago you were wondering why you keep getting recommended Late Night shows even if you never had the interest to watch a single video from them. YT replays were getting more and more disastrous year by year. Everything big, bloated and backed by heavy dollars and interests is the driving force of a company the size of youtube, but usually it's also what people don't naturally gravitate towards, unless they're force-fed that way. Now, in November 2021, they're removing the dislike count. Next up is removing the dislike button completely. As that goes on, the big outlets will more and more turn off comments (look at the channels for Amazon or Facebook) until we become used to it and mid-sized creators start to do the same. Then they will extend the areas where commenting is never possible (for now, it's only for the "UA-cam Kids" label afaik). You can see where this is going.
It's the slow frog boil effect. They're turning it back into TV.
@black the ripper thats actually a very smart point. and tbh I dont think most people would mind that, since the videos I personally wanna gauge the like/dislike ratios on are bigger videos anyways
just allow the video uploader to disable dislikes just like how you can disable comments... simple... easy... everybody happy....
Without dislikes removed, I can't trust small name channels for tutorials, especially when involving downloading applications that potentially can be a scam/malware.
Before seeing a channel with likes/comments disabled or a high dislike count, I knew to stay away from that video. Now without it, I honestly just don't even bother searching for it to avoid taking that risk.
Completely agree. I think dislike disabling will hurt small channels quite hard instead of help them.
