I remember as a child, my mother once told me “If somebody threatens to kill you if you scream, scream.” Listening to stories like this makes me realise how right she was. Murderers never let you go, so even if it means getting hurt or being potentially killed, never give up on that small window of time to cry out for help. There are worse things than death.
We taught our kids to fight right where they are, hit the ground with all their weight if that's all they can do. NEVER get taken away in a car. I would rather be killed where I stand than days/weeks/years later after the hell someone has planned.
Yeah and also i heard this from somewhere that if the attacker doesn't wear a mask or something that covers their identity, they will most likely kill you because they didn't care that you see their face.
Theres a channel on UA-cam called Active Self Protection that goes over all sorts of camera footage showing self defense situations. The guy who does the videos is a self defense/shooting instructor who is very knowledgeable. He always says, "never let yourself be tied up, if you do, you're most likely gonna die." Run if you can, fight if you can't, but never let someone tie you up and subdue you.
@Abdul Raheem Badayuni Glad you pointed out that "when your time is up, you die." Correct! When a psycho tries to mess with me or enter my home THEIR time will be up! I refuse to act like a fragile, unprepared, helpless being waiting to be taken advantage of. We live in a dark world and evil is lurking around the corner. I'm not paranoid, I'm a realistic, analytical free thinker. When my time is up only God the Father can decide when to take me home.
i’m deaf with cochlear implants and audio is generally quite hard for me to understand, especially male voices but mr ballen is one of very few male/male voice storytellers i can understand with little to no difficulty. i also love that his body language is so open and he imitates some of the movements, makes it more interesting. i’ve been binging him soo much 😂
I was a sophomore at UF during the time of these murders. The palpable fear and anxiety was causing such bad dreams, I ended up withdrawing from school and leaving the state. I did eventually finish my degree at UF at a later date. This is the first time I’ve heard all the details of what happened. I hesitated for a long while before hitting the play button. It breaks my heart to hear what the victims went through. Their names have been on the 34th Street graffiti wall for 30+ years now.

Can we just take a moment to be thankful for a 48 minutes story 😌 for those of us who binged watched every single video, and wait for a new one, a long one is very much appreciated 😅
The most heartbreaking elements of these stories is when you hear about these young beautiful people about to start these new chapters of their lives and how proud their parents and families are filled with so much hope and love and support and then to have it destroyed by someone or something or some circumstance. I think about these families and their pain and my heart goes out to them. 😔
I know, it's just so sad people think that this is ok. I hope the parents can feel peace or at least not thinking it's their fault. Fly high angels ❤️😢
All Criminals needs to be executed in a slow and painful way, like being thrown in boiling hot water in a giant pot! Execution needs to be like the Mongolians in the 12th century. Kill one person and you, your family, and relatives will be wipe out from this planet. This would make murders around the world drop. As family members will need to check who's the psycho in their family that's going to cause their whole lineage from being wipe out.
I'm a real big fan of these longer, single story episodes. It's a lot more thorough and really does the story justice. Great work as always, Mr. Ballen.
I seriously can't wrap my head around the fact that the police found a tape recorder and they decided not to listen to it. he literally confessed who he was on it!
@@SgtJoeSmith meh they knew it was an armed robbery so obviously there was a gun involved and a screw drivers pretty random but not something you’d think could easily break doors open
@@naiire_ i see your point but with a serial killer on loose id think theyd look into any other crime to see if it is somehow related. or at least listen to the tape. if nothing else listening to tape may help figure out who robber was. or if it was just a music tape then only wasted 1 minute
It's also why I won't watch those stupid 'Scream' movies. They're using horrible murders to portray further murders to make entertainment out of. It's an affront to all the victims. It cheapens what happened to them. It's totally disrespectful and WRONG.
Was in Gainesville during the murders. Mr. Ballen, you nailed it. There was extreme terror and lots of rumors. After Manny was killed, there was total freakout. No one was safe! I still remember the 5 victims after all these years.
Can we all just take a minute to admire Mr. Ballen’s talent? I never realized how difficult it is to sound the way he does telling stories until I had to record a 3 minute video for my speech class this semester.
@@MrBallen Wanted to take the time to say a little something. I have a lot of respect for you. I’m referring to the stories that involve sexual assault. Thank you.
My mother was a student at UF and living with my dad at the time of the Danny Rowland killings. One weekend when he was out of town she was convinced someone was watching her. She told me that she actually had seen a head and a pair of eyes watching her from her from the emergency hatch inside her closet (essentially from the roof). A friend of theirs came and inspected the apartment immediately. They found someone’s living space in the hatch above her and my dads closet, but no person was there. They had broken in through crawl space left in roof of the Camelot apartments because at the time none were sealed off. It was easy access in and out of those apartments if you knew about it. A sleeping bag, tons of candy bar wrappers, and drink containers was inside that hatch. My mom fit the EXACT description of most of the women that were targeted. When they called the cops they thought she would have potentially been another victim, but can never say for sure. It’s so disturbing watching this because I feel like I’m looking at my mom in all the photos of these women. I’m just glad she trusted her instincts and got the hell out of town with my dad and their friends. She said it was on of the most traumatic times in all the students lives because no one knew who could be next, and even being with people didn’t necessarily mean you were safe.
I wonder why they didn't use dogs to follow his scent if he was walking from and back to his camp nearby? I can't believe they caught him only because of the botched bank robbery
I love how MrBallen always adds details that humanize these poor victims! For example “..she was getting ready to put on this red dress she picked out…” 😞 So sad 💔 May all of the victims in all of these stories be resting in paradise
I do find it in bad taste when he added the sound of the decapitation and paused her home video once it had her head aiming down similar to the crime scene. He normally doesnt do stuff like that but idk it was off putting
I say this same thing all the time when I see people ask how he could possible know things like that. I’m like really? Of course he couldn’t know all that but he is painting a picture while he tells their story! He doesn’t just go thru the motions he makes them human to you and helps you empathize! So chill bro ❤
Same!!! I have a degree in Administration of CriminalJustice, Sociology & Psych and have always had an untamed interest in unsolved mysteries, true crime, forensic analysis etc. When I read the title I assumed MrBallen was speaking of the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddard . Wow, what a coincidence, I went to high school with Manny and Tracy, it was an awful and sad story, they had so much promise. Manny was my friend. He was a wonderful guy. I was heartbroken. I went to UF during that time. It was absolutely terrifying what we all went through. I cannot explain the utter fear we lived with every day. What the news doesn’t tell you is about the rumor mill. Each day they would say on the news and the radio that there were 8 bodies found, then 10, then TWENTY!!!! We seriously thought we couldn’t walk outside without being killed! I have PTSD from it til this day.
I can't imagine how Manny must've felt in his final moments realizing he was unable to protect his friend and himself. Plus Tracy must've felt riddled with guilt because she had convinced Manny to come back to college with her; trying to be a good friend by encouraging him to finish his education. SMH. Unreal that deciding to better yourself is the reason your life is cut short.
no one was armed (at least I didnt hear the victims were). If at least one of them had a gun nearby, below the bed, at a drawer in a kitchen, things would have turn out very differently.
@@JucelegarioA gun doesn't matter if you don't have the opportunity to use it. Every victim outside of 1 was either surprise attacked or stabbed in their sleep. Gainesville resident here. This case still haunts the town to this day. One of the most chilling parts I’ve ever heard about this case was that when Manny and Tracey were noticed as missing, some people got into their apartment to try and check what was going on. When they walked in, they saw blood and a black bag and immediately turned away to call the police. Once they got back, the black bag was gone. Many people think the killer was still inside when these people came in first, but once he heard them he got spooked and ran off. She wasn’t mutilated post mortem like the other victims, supporting this theory. Absolutely horrifying to think of if you were the friends to walk in
@@IAmVictorrL it was inspired by the movie bc the new screenwriter was house-sitting alone when he saw news /doc about the Gainesville ripper. Ever since my sister moved out, she's had sliding glass doors and as a forensic scientist, she's NEVER trusted the locks to be enough and always has steel bars she slides into place so the doors can't be jimmied open. Now I know where she learned to be so cautious.
Nearly everybody does that. But as a guy who has worked in construction for years and installed hundreds of different types of doors and locks, every normal door can be easily defeated.
I once lived in this old house that my landlord built from the ground up. It was a really cool house but, wherever there was a window, I had steel pipes cut to a custom fit because the windows were like that glass slide door. They all opened like that. I have done that ever since, wherever I have lived for safety because a really cool and really thrifty neighbor of mine out there, taught me that. They can still get in though. Mr Ballen shows the topic respect and gives it weight, even if he does or doesn’t have a true experience of it. I did not convey that correctly and I apologize immensely. It’s mind boggling to me that the cops could find a tape recorder among the belongings of an armed bank robber and thought it was too much work to press play😡
That is because the spree killer case was the highest priority. It shows just how determined they were to end it. Ironically, that intense desire to solve it delayed them from actually solving it.
@@anabanana2.037Hindsight is 20/20. The spree killer was literally raping and murdering on a DAILY BASIS. I love that you’re not afraid to give the full story and details, going step by step of what happened. There’s other UA-camrs who do storytelling but skip over these details. I find them scary yet interesting and it really brings out the emotions with the way you tell these stories. For example, even giving the whole picture of what people were doing before anything even terrifying started happening
Not just the full details, but the full details in every scenario, not glossing over the methodical similarity of each of the crimes. As soon as you start glossing over details like that, you're admitting that these things(SA and murder) are already boring details. No "this victim's case is almost identical so I'll skip over this part."
if you only knew the full story and details. this guy had at least 3 victims that he decapitated and placed their heads on a shelf or mantel , looking down at their body, which...considering that you are still conscious for 30 seconds before you die after that...is extremely disturbing. I had a huge book , bought 8 years ago from the book store which was essentially an encyclopedia of serial murder and out of all the horrid stories contained within, this one was one of the top 5 that stuck out to me.
He seemed so transparent about who he was and what he wanted to do. He told that Cindy woman that he wanted to stab people, and that he was going to move to Florida because there's lots of young women there. He was already sick and twisted by that point I’m sure. I’m sure he enjoyed the thought of it rather than thinking there was something wrong with him. It’s really sick… and I wish people like that were reported immediately when found suspicious

Not really. The pictures we have of Danny are from him being cleaned up in court. For years he was a homeless derelict who carried a large knife around everywhere.

I hate that they went through this I'd rather just be murdered than have all those disgusting things happen. Punishment for rape should be brutal because the victim WILL NEVER BE OK AGAIN.
True. This is a good example that someones appearance doesn't have to say anything about them. Maybe the first guy had an accident with a glass door/window when he was a kid.
Hearing this story just reinforces my self guardedness when I’m out or even just relaxing at home. I always lock my doors and windows even if I’m inside. Sliding glass doors are easy to break into, I found out the hard way. The moving part of the door can be quietly lifted up, then in. I recommend everyone use a pin stop at the top frame and it doesn't hurt to have a track dowel as well. Both are needed for security.
That's the setup my parents had. Many times I would let the dog out then once I would snap the pin stop and insert the dowel into the track. It really does work well.
@The Great Pumpkin yeah you don't really need a huge attack dog. Even just a tiny Chihuahua that would bark if someone comes into or even near the apartment would have helped most of these people

As an ex-criminal and a legit street guy all my life (SC'er) let me say this for those that don't know, people like him are not feared, nor respected inside. Though the level of pain they receive is nowhere near the pain they dished out, they are viewed as trash and are dealt with accordingly. There is no greater feeling than seeing a grown man who hurts kids or innocent people, 💩 on himself knowing what's coming, and hearing them squeal as they're getting it! Condolences to the families.

The fact that Danny, the serial killer that inspired the movie Scream, had a campsite that was very close to the campus and looked extremely shady, and yet no one questioned it or anything is just unbelievable. I feel like some people would see that campsite in the day and ask themselves “why the heck is there a random tent a few feet from campus??” Like did no one think to report that? Personally if it was me I would report it in, I wouldn’t want some stranger, no matter the circumstance, to live that close to campus in a tent, it just gives off bad vibes and I would feel completely vulnerable and unsafe, knowing that some creep of some sort is keeping an eye on the campus at all times, which is slightly concerning and very stalkish, I’m just surprised Danny wasn’t caught quicker
I have to give so much credit to Manny. Though he wasn't sure about his own path, the drive to protect his friend was strong. Even though it sealed his fate, I'd like to imagine that his final subconscious thoughts were not just of fear, but also heroism and a want to guard Tracy. I pray their spirits found one another.

I honestly hate that these people were all murdered so brutally particularly Christa Hoyt. None of them needed to die and they all seemed like excited people. I wonder if Tracy and Manny would have ended up getting married but thanks to Danny we would never know. Truly horrifying story. It's one thing to kill somebody in self defence but to kill somebody purely for a thrill, is on another level of horror. And to think it was brought about initially because of bad childhood upbringing.
I totally agree. As horrible as these murders are , the families of the victims have grieved or are probably 29:05 still grieving. My daughter Vanessa disappeared 4 years ago with a boyfriend. We still cannot find her. She was also very kind and loving and wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement . I have contacted the police, and numerous agencies dedicated to finding missing loved ones. Daily I think that she may have been murdered or forced into sex trafficking. My family has no closure and it has caused so much hate, finger pointing and guilt , especially to me, as her mother I felt that I let her down and I don't know why Vanessa never reached out to her family, if she could. I hope one day that God will reveal all. Prayer is all I have now to get me through my days and nights.❤
@@JacquelineBishop-Hopkins I am so sorry about that. That must be awful. God is really the only One who can help you in a time like this. I will pray that somehow your daughter will show up.
After talking with law enforcement in my area, I now have a home security system, massive guard dog, and I have my conceal carry permit.
@Abdul Raheem Badayuni Glad you pointed out that "when your time is up, you die." Correct! When a psycho tries to mess with me or enter my home THEIR time will be up! I cried that he couldn't save her from this monster
Right on
All for nothing
Or himself
@@adrianonline69 but you didn't cry about his death? I hate how disposable men are
I used to be an apartment manager and I had to do a welfare check with the sheriff's department once...coming back out of that apartment and having to face that family members loved one after what we saw was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life 😥💔...my deepest condolences to all the family members and loved ones of the victims mentioned here. My heart breaks for you all.
He looked so harmless and yet Humphreys looked exactly like somebody who would smack his own grandmother.
Really shows how looks can be deceiving
Amen.
Dayton Rodgers didn't look like much. Scared people from Portland to Salem and especially in Molalla. Looks are deceiving.
Your basically a racist but worse for saying something like this
@@OneHunnitNoCapStannitOnBidnisz you're gonna have to back that accusation up and explain yourself a bit, otherwise your statement is saying more about you.
@@OneHunnitNoCapStannitOnBidnisz Why are you immediately jumping to race? Are you seriously this brainwashed by the media??
