As someone who suffered from depression, i can say the mind does things to cope with trauma. In short, since his life was so bad, his mind had created a "safe place" where everything did go right. Every situation is different, but perhaps his safe place had a different name and lifestyle. These thoughts dont just occure, they can span from childhood to present day. Which would explain why he remembered childhood memories. He probably did hit his head during the accident, and when he woke up his "safe place" memories went from coping thoughts to being real to him. I suffered from this coping method, only i never took those thoughts real.

I know Yesenia's accident was a freak accident, but freak accidents are why safety practices exist. They shouldn't put anything on you at all until everything is connected first. And people shouldn't be able to jump without a staff member clearing them. And they shouldn't have two people up there at the same time if they aren't ready at the same time and the verbal communication isn't totally clear with two-way understanding confirmed. ANYONE could misunderstand when a staffer says "ok jump!" to someone else, that is WAY too broad to say at a BUNGEE JUMPING business

#2 is why there should ALWAYS be a call and response procedure to verify safety. Especially when you're dealing with people that may not have done anything like that before. Repelling, zip lining, climbing, bungee jumping, and everything else similar are supposed to have a call and response before action.

💯 Soooo true! Usually your gut feeling is almost always right. I was always taught to listen to that & I've told my kids the same. That bungee jumping story is so sad & super scary.
When I was young my oldest cousin (19 at the time) went to Canada for a fun night with friends. (Living in Michigan, only like 20-25 mins away-- it's almost a right of passage to go drinking in Canada since the legal drinking age is 19.) Sadly, her friend that drove had no business driving. My cousin, seated behind the driver, passed away on impact from getting crushed between seats. Even though it's been many years I can still remember what one of her best friends said at the funeral. I guess my cousin had begged her to come out with them that night. She was in college & busy studying, so she declined. I guess being persistent my cousin & friends stopped at her house on the way for one last begging attempt. She didn't end up going & she said it wasn't so much the studying keeping her home, but a terrible gut feeling. She was beside herself at the funeral & kept repeating how she KNEW something bad was gonna happen.😢 So, to make a long story even longer, lol, ALWAYS listen to your gut people!!!!

Actually, in the Story of Larry Bater, there is this effect called a, "Confabulation". A confabulation, basically, happens, when your brain tries to recall something, like a memory, draws a blank and then just decides to produce something that fits the bill. Happens a lot in dementia cases, especially early ones, but also to people with ADHD. Our brain is quite apt in doing so and, for some, this ability is the core reason we can be creative.

There was no Home or business computers, time when a lot of stuff was done on paper a phone call or fax or something so it was easy to start a new life in a sense. Then the niece had to bring everyone’s attention to him. He lost his family, he lost his job, and he definitely was beyond poor after the insurance company went after him so he wouldn’t be able to afford chemo. And he had amnesia the whole time. Does anyone else think it would have been harsher punishment in the US or would he get the same punishment? I was just really, really horrified with this case. I watch true crime all the time, but when I heard what he'd done to her, I had to rewind it and I audibly said "oh my God". That says a lot. This guy is dangerous.

    • @davidsergeant4488

So, without knowing the exact medical details, I can explain how that happened.
If he was found not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity, he is not criminally culpable. There's is no criminal sentence.
In the UK, the judge can however issue a hospital treatment order. This basically says "you had no mens rea, not criminal intent, because you are mentally unwell and that is not your fault. However, your illness means you pose a significant risk to the safety of yourself and/or others and therefore you are ordered to be detained in hospital until such time as you have been treated to the degree that you are no longer a threat"
Michael would have been detained to a mental health hospital and been under the treatment of psychiatrists. He would not be allowed to leave hospital until deemed well. 4 years is the average length of stay at a high secure mental health unit, in medium secure its about 2 I think.

I wouldn’t let my fear of heights stop me from getting on a plane to travel because that’d be allowing my fear to control me IMO but thrill seeking - Never. And what comes to mind from MrBallen is all those scuba diving stories where people pass numerous warning to turn around if they’re not a professional, noting others have died and stating that the trip isn’t worth death, but they push on and perish tragically. I was an EMT in an area with a bungee jump location nearby and firsties not being able to get their first jump over with because they freak out and need medical assistance is common. Yecenia's tragic end is the result of negligence. It's standard protocol for staff to not have the jumper be on the platform until harness and rope are secured. Once on the platform, the jumper must be held on to by at least one staff member until they clearly state that yes, they do want to go through with this. Clearly, neither of these things happened. My fiancé went to Las Vegas for a business trip and there’s a tower that does something similar to bungee jumping, all his coworkers wanted to go and since he’s the youngest, they convinced him to try it and he agreed. After leaving, he ends up calling me to tell me how he will never do anything like that ever again. Because when he was up there, they were strapping on his gear, and told him to move forward on the ledge, kind of like walking the plank but it had bars to hold onto from the sides and the instructor literally says “okay” but GRATEFULLY my fiancé actually ASKS “so can I jump?” And the instructor literally says “NO! You’re not hooked up yet!”
My fiancé put a death grip on those side bars so quick…. All the courage he had built up because he is very afraid of heights, it all disappeared when he realized how close to death he was, he got weak in the knees and started blacking out….

Second story is so sad. I read about it a while back but had no idea she died of a heart attack halfway.
That sounds really unlikely. There are 3 seconds between jumping and impact. Not enough time to have a heart attack and die. Sounds to me like the lawyers for the bungee jumping company were using that to limit their liability and negligence.

One thing that stuck out to me about the first story...how did Larry Bader just HAPPEN to have documentation saying he was John "Fritz" Johnson? Given that he seemed utterly convinced that he really was Fritz, the only thing I can think of is that he had actually planned to abandon his life due to the debt and not being able to start a business, and start over elsewhere. Except, something happened to him in the attempt, presumably a traumatic head injury of some kind, that caused him to actually lose his memory, and as he had documentation with him, he just assumed it was real and presented it as such.
It is a bit odd that he didn't have any point of missing or foggy memories as Fritz that would point to the time in which he'd presumably suffered the head injury and become Fritz. Like...you'd think there would be some kind of gap in his memories between when he left his first family and when he walked into town and applied for job. Even if he assumed he'd been robbed, or something, there had to be a point in which he woke up and didn't recall where he was or how he got there. Very strange.

I have a theory... but it's just a wild theory.
He had a plan to help his family to make it out of debt, and the only way was to trick insurance company that he's dead.
So... he needed to start a new life, but he knew he'll miss his family too much if he ever decides to do so, so he made a secret plan. He somehow obtained fake documents, and then took a hypnosis session to make him forget his former life, but also start a new one without missing anything from before. Also, being actually convinced that you are another person comes with a benefit of being able to pass any lie detector, because you are actually not lying, so it's a perfect way to shapeshift into another man.

He could have also suffered from MPD or the new name for it is dissociative identity disorder. Due 2 his depression and need to be away from his family on the weekends Etc. It could mean that he must have suffered some type of psychotic break probably when he was a child and you'd be surprised how easy that happens. the documentation of three faces of Eve and some documentation written by psychologists who have suffered this themselves and then it been diagnosed in their adulthood turns out that it doesn't take much to cause this but the person has an extremely high IQ it appears that people with extremely high IQs can suffer from MPD or DID can have this because mainly childhood trauma does not require sexual can be physical and verbal abuse, excessive moving from chapter study into child custodian or child neglect, having cancer could have caused it.
My brother had the starting of it because of the abuse we received as children. He completely lost his mind as to who he was and the other personality took over as he was dying from a brain injury that caused lesions on the brain almost like brain tumors and they found that Aziz medical condition worse than slowly my brother himself disappeared and the other personality took over mainly because my brother was unable to face his death that was being caused by the child abuse we had received. He was a brilliant young man who was able to complete in three years to Bachelors of Science degrees wow putting himself through University working full-time and being extremely ill the last year. However, by the end of his life and the seizures were so horrible that he moved back and forth between the personalities with these and slowly my brother himself began to disappear. Yet the new personality had a a full background and the people who knew the other personality well that guy had no sister had no family he was an orphan that it's been the last two years of his life in foster care as his parents died when he was in junior high. Yet these were people who also lived in the same Community as my brother and our family lived. Nobody knew that my brother had a real family a real personality that sadly his brain injury had taken him away from us. It broke my heart to realize the new personality that took over my brother didn't need a sister. Maybe it made it easier to die I don't know. When he died from his brain injury at age 32 he had two Social Security numbers two valid driver's licenses and left behind a heartbroken family. Yet the core person who my brother was a very kind and sweet person was in both people.

She had a MASSIVE panic attack while boarding the plane. Not because she was worried about sky diving, but my mom has insanely bad claustrophobia and just physically couldn’t bring herself to get into the small crowded plane.
My moms friend called my grandma to come get my mom, making fun of her calling her a buzzkill, telling her she wasted her money, trying to get my mom to go, but my mom just wouldn’t.
About 4 hours later my mom gets a phone call from her friend.

In the bungee jumping accident - that poor woman's death was entirely preventable if the company had had literally THE MOST basic and common sense safety measures. I'm shocked more people aren't commenting on this.
    1) You don't let people be on the ledge unless they're attached to the cord.
    2) You don't use nonspecific terms like "ok jump!" that don't clearly specify who is supposed to jump.
She had no control over the extent to which her automatic flight or fight system gave her panic and tunnel vision. She wouldn't be the first to have that reaction to bungee jumping! So true!! I can also see how she or any one of us could have made that mistake as they already put the safety harness on her but not the actual bungee cord. While she was waiting there for her turn and the adrenaline was pumping once she heard "ok, jump!" toward her direction she must have instinctively felt all the necessary equipment was already in place. Putting that harness on someone but not the actual cord is much much worse and misleading than not putting anything on until everything is ready and then putting everything on all at once.

Larry faked his own death and had planned to start a new life as Fritz, with papers and an elaborate backstory. He pulled it off, everything is well and good, it all goes even better tham expected. He's living it up as Fritz, and after a while, he has completely absorbed his new persona and barely even thinks about his previous life.
Later, he develops cancer of the eye, and the tumor begins to affect his cognition / memories, but no one around him really takes notice, because the first major symptom is that he forgets his previous life. Slowly, over time, he literally loses the ability to recall Larry's life.
If this sounds far-fetched, spend some time around people suffering from dementia or similar afflictions -- they have trouble recalling things unprompted but are very open to suggestions. Normally, their loved ones help them remember what actually happened. But what if someone suffering from a similar neurological condition was surrounded by people (unwittingly, but nonetheless) reinforcing false memories? The false memories would become the only memories; they would, from Larry / Fritz's point of view, simply become "the truth."
This would be basically impossible for doctors to detect -- if the tumor was mainly affecting long term memories, it would be completely invisible to doctors treating him -- literally no one was around from his previous life as Larry, so nobody contradicted him. He invented Fritz's childhood memories less than a decade before, and could therefore recount them "accurately" (as far as anyone could tell) -- but his ACTUAL long term memories of his life as Larry faded away.
By the time he was confronted in Chicago, he 100% believed he was Fritz, and had lost his long term memory so much that he did not even recognize the name "Larry," nor his own brothers. He humored their request to get fingerprinted, and was truly, legitimately shocked to find out he wasn't Fritz. This ended up ruining him, even before the tumor that took him memories, also took his life.
And so, for all intents and purposes, an innocent man -- Fritz -- was punished for the crimes of another person, who just so happened to also be him.

I see why she was suspicious. Although it isn’t uncommon for someone to turn to religion suddenly and begin devoting much of their time to it. I have seen it happen with atheists several times. As an atheist myself, who has just lost my grandparents this year who were my mom, my dad, and my best friends, and then my father having killed himself in the last month, I see how desperate, hopeless, and alone a person can become. I can imagine finding a community and support system like that could be very intoxicating and helpful. He started going to all of the meetings as well as spending as much time as he could with her, a very religious group leader. I am not surprised that he would be talking about her a lot when she was this newfound guidance in religion and way of life. As the original poster said, if she really was just using him for money, then that plays into it even more. I believe religion plays into it massively as well as mental illness when he breaks and begins speaking in tongues. If it was as simple as him being angry at Marie refusing his advances I don’t believe he would have had a psychotic break that involved religious elements. I didn’t see why his wife burst into the prayer group instead of catching them individually either. That felt off to me, it’s not exactly how you confront a cheater.

Well I’m not a priest and am only giving my answer based off what I’ve learned in my life as a Christian. But tongues is a language only the “supernatural” can understand, when I went to church my pastor would break out into tongues for maybe 1 to 2 minutes and then it would die down and he would go back to prayer, this was not every Sunday only during deep prayers or sermons, the idea is the holy trinity, which is basically saying god is one person but with 3 parts, (God the father), (God the son), and (God the Holy Spirit). The Holy Spirit is where tongues comes from, when your in a state of pure faith and the love of god is flowing through you and u proceed to speak a language only god, angels, and demons can understand.
Do not fully believe this though because I am not positive if this is accurate this is just a base on the way I remember it. If your curious ask a local Christian pastor for guidance.
