Seriously, men need to hone their danger instincts. While it is certainly a psychological burden for women to be cautious and wary in all kinds of situations, it’s also an asset. My dudes, there is no scenario in which a plastic wrapped garage is good news.

If a "woman" invites you, a complete stranger she met on the internet, to her home, of all places, for a first meeting, be veeeeeery skeptical. No woman with any common sense would ever do that. You should always meet in a public place for a first date.

    • @Rakerong

That was definite red flags. And why no phone numbers exchanged? Not that it would matter if there is a woman in on it and they were up to no good, but in no way should anyone feel comfortable getting specific driving instructions to a shady looking place. It makes no sense. It's like, if this were legit then the guy is gonna know the address of the place once he gets there so what was the point of all that?
Exchange numbers, meet in a public place, make sure friends or family know where you're at and what you're doing, and play things cautiously.

No we would never have gotten away longer regardless. he got caught because the plan was terribly sloppy, he used his own garage, communicated with the victims giving directions to his property by email, leaving evidence and he let his first victim get away to be able to tell exactly what happened and where, but then repeated the exact same plan again. The script just made it extremely easy to convict him since it was literally and a confession.

Something you forgot to mention was that the reason none of his neighbors called the police when they heard screaming coming from his garage, is because he had gone out of his way to make little flyers and told all his neighbors like “hey I’m filming a movie so if you hear anything concerning don’t be alarmed. People are actually brutally murdered in these cases and the way this guy talks about them totally cheapens the tragedies and is giving his younger viewers a similar mindset, seeing true crime as “stories” and they’re just entertainment for you. People are curious about what makes things tick. What makes people do bad things. And how to protect yourself from things like that. People have been telling stories of crimes, wars, battles, disasters, and drama for millennia. This isn’t some new phenomenon, but from up there on your high horse, you might have missed it with your head in the clouds. Oh and BTW, we can see your True Crime playlist full of Stephanie Harlowe and Unsolved Mysteries. • @breelauren3748
      @breelauren3748 2 роки тому +28

I understand your sentiment, but we have to be careful when making statements like this because they can easily cross the line into victim blaming. Like in the circumstances of rape victims - it’s very rare for any rapist to ever be prosecuted and most rape kits go completely unchecked. It does no good to report rapists 99% of the time, so most victims choose to save themselves further trauma of having strangers poke and prod them inside and out, swabbing their anus, their vagina, their mouth, taking swabs of everything, removing and keeping their clothing, retelling and reliving the event in great detail - and then nothing being done. So we can not put the blame on victims. It’s likely that a victim could report the killer/rapist/assault and then nothing be done and the perpetrator still go on to reoffend. It is not the fault of the victims.

    • @rickwrites2612
      @rickwrites2612 2 роки тому +13

Absolutely. I think most straight women, and many gay men, have already internalized this by now, But for straight men they may still have a false sense of security because of the dearth of women who kill on first dates. But the truth is you could get that 1 lady who does, or you could be talking to a male serial killer, or a gang of thieves or anyone at all.
The false sense of security is from the mistake of thinking women are victims of this type of murder because they're physically weaker. That's not why. It's because of 1. who the killers are, and 2. how we think about gender.
      1. Most date killers happen to be straight men, so if sex instinct plays any role in their desire to kill, they will naturally target women.
      2. As a young prettyboy gay I made some risky decisions in my teens and 20s. Like going into online hookups blind, being a bottom. I had 1 situation where I was violently assaulted, physically and sexually, where I wasn't even given an opportunity to negotiate or consent but thrown into some kind of nonconsensual, unsafe, insane BDSM scene without prior knowlege by a guy 3x my size without a safeword. Once the point of no return had been crossed and I fully realized I had 0 power, I had to act complicit because it was the safest thing to do. I was there for hours and had to act normal. He even had to drive me to train after. He asked if I was ok.
And I remember it was VERY clear to me, that had I been a woman, I would be killed. I remember thinking in that moment, Thank God I'm not a girl because girls get killed after. That's fucked up.
But it's what we are constantly fed in media. Boys/men are seen by abusers (and even others) as being able to accept and move on from abuse or rape "well he's a boy, he'll be ok". Girls are seen as ruined, stained, garbage. And garbage gets thrown out.
In addition I think I wasn't just making an association fed by media, I think there was truth to it, in general, and in my particular situation. It was like an unspoken sense of "you're a guy, you understand the only rules are who can dominate who, you'll play by the rules".
I'm not sure I'm articulating what I mean very well. But I do think as a result of these ideas, men, and in particular straight men, can have an inflated sense of security/invincibility when it comes to a blind date situation. Men have a very real awareness they can, at any time, be targeted for an unwanted fistfight if they say the wrong thing in public, because that's more common. So public is seen more of a place of risk, (although not murder level). Men don't usually walk around with the awareness that most women do, which is if you're alone anyone with a gun can hurt and kill you. It won't matter that you're x% stronger than if you were a woman.

A pub that was usually frequented by people I knew and I told him to bring a friend. My friends that were there hung out with us. My sister was working at a restaurant across from the pub and also came over. It ended up being a giant group/ night out. Super fun and I was never in a vulnerable situation. Scepticism is so damn important, especially in situations like this, your gut will tell you what your reaction to a situation should be. Also, not only are the strange directions dead giveaways but, if you are committed to it bring something for self-defence. It's unlikely a killer is going to expect you to pull a weapon of some kind. Or, learn self-defence, MMA (mixed martial arts), taekwondo, ju-jitsu, kickboxing, muay Thai, Krav Maga, karate, etc. All are very effective and life-saving methods of staying safe. Just because your target/attacker is bigger, stronger etc doesn't mean his going always have the advantage. If you put anyone with basic self-defence training In those situations the likelihood of survival goes up.
I think Giles's approach with adrenaline and being consciously aware that he could have easily died was a major benefactor in keeping him alive. He kept fighting realising he didn't want to die. If you get to a situation where you know it's life or, death, never give up. I've heard enough of these stories knowing that once incapacitated you are in a dire situation. The fact that this man survived to tell the tale and evidently helped bring down Mark was evidence enough of why he should not be embarrassed as he and Johnny prevented this from happening to anyone else.
Mark was narcissistic by the end wanting everything his way. He was so devoid of any human emotion because his drive was on making a story believable that he descended into madness; he wanted the perfect ending. Knowing that some people lack any sense of empathy or, compassion - if anyone is ever in that situation though, I wish it never to be true but, be aware of how fighting is your best chance of survival. Take any opportunity you are given.
My condolences to Johnny and his family that poor man was literally just looking for love. It's heartbreaking how Johnny's pleaded for his life using his last ounce of strength to protect himself hoping for the ordeal to be over. I admire his strength to keep on fighting till his last breath.

Police police police, see we "NEED" police in our society because they "HELP" us. What would we do in a society without police. Well we would have to form tighter communities because there's no police to call and we would always be carrying some type of weapon into risky scenarios (Because there's no law preventing this common sense carry).
Hmmm just think about how much "help" the police were in these scenarios as opposed to how much help a tighter community / tighter bonds with neighbors would be, paired with carrying at the very least a taser at all times. Do you see how police protection is a fallacy and that we would literally be safer WITHOUT police. Yes that's actually the reality of it. Police are an evil cult that need to be abolished all they do is arrive AFTER a crime has been committed to satiate vindictiveness. They don't protect us AT ALL, they only prevent self protection though reliance on them. Abolish the immoral police cult!

I learned that the hard way when I ended up getting drugged and raped by a man who I met online. We had been chatting for a couple of months. He was a single dad of an 8 year old boy as his wife died when their son was six months old. One night we were supposed to meet but then he said his babysitter cancelled. I had a rule that I always met in a public place but I felt safer this time because of his little boy who ended up being a real little sweetheart. It was right after Christmas and he had to show me every one of his gifts as well as his cat. After his dad put him to bed he made me a drink and we sat on the couch and visited. He was a gentleman. I finished my drink and he said that he was going to make me another one that would be extra tasty. He brought it to me from the kitchen and I took one sip. Immediately after that I had difficulty keeping my eyes open. He took me by the hand and told me that I had better go lay down. That was my last memory until 4 am when I woke up in a bed with no clothes on.

Yup, the only thing dexter about this is the kill room, everything else is anti dexter and thus would be the target of dexter.
But I don't think that Mark was actually trying to imitate dexter outside the kill room, killers killing killers doesn't drive fear or real suspense in movies but doing it to innocent people and with such a common thing as dating sites would have made for a great horror suspense type film. Didn't need that reality part to get there though.
It would also be interesting to see the writers of dexter use this story, given how dexter is often conflicted with admiring a killers work with stopping the killer having someone use his exact methods of evidence prevention and killing would create a very interesting multifaceted plot over several episodes.
Dexter was one of those shows that was well written, maybe too well written as it covered the mental and physical issues in pretty good detail as if the writes were writing about their own fantasy and mental illness. Just not taken it to the level mark did.

Well technically Dexter may be a serial killer but he's essentially a vigilante that only targets other killers. He doesn't go after innocent people, at least not on purpose. If Mark was targeting pedophiles or something and luring them to his garage to meet up with underage girls or boys then that would've been a reasonable comparison.

There have been so many cases of people being catfished and attacked by someone they met on a dating site, it really should be made into a movie to teach people, especially men, not to waltz into the homes of some supposedly cute blond babe they met online. Most women are more wary of meeting new people and would prefer to meet in a public place first, if you get an invitation to her house on the first date, that is a huge red flag

Ever since I started following your channel, I have drastically made some adjustments in my personal life. As much as I started watching your content for entertainment purpose initially, now I honestly started incorporating some practices that I overlooked before out of carelessness or just not overthinking about dangers around us.
I have made a habit of always checking my doors and windows to make sure they're locked. Also me and my family enjoy outdoor activities and are regular campers. I have a 4 year old daughter and I make sure I never keep her out of my sight or my reach no matter how tired or exhausted I am.
You are doing the community a great service and I wish your videos reach many viewers out there and they learn a thing or two about the invisible monsters all around us.
    Thank you sir!!!

Yes me too!!! Now more than ever I’m more aware of everything around me esp when it comes to my daughter… I tell her allllll the time… there’s a lot of crazy people out here and you never know… always be aware & watch your surroundings and don’t ever trust anyone esp strangers and never talk to strangers even if you think they look nice… even women. There’s a story where this man came out of the store with his baby while his wife was still in the store and this lady came up to him took his baby & when he tried getting his baby back she started yelling that he was tryna steal her baby and everyone tried hurting him and she started walking off but luckily the wife came out and got her baby and they lady just left before anyone could see where she went cuz people still didn’t believe the father and was still attacking him. Crazy store but so true. There are so many predators out here esp with trafficking.

    1. If its too good to be true, it most likely is.

      3. Don't meet them at their house or in a secluded area. Always meet in a public place where there are a lot of people.
      4. Tell your family and/or friends where you're going and when you'll be coming back before you go to meet the person. They won't be able to help you if they don't know where you are.
      5. Carry pepper spray and/or mace.
      6. Carry a whistle or an alarm. You can use them to try and alert anyone who might be nearby.
      7. If your gut is telling you something's wrong and that you should bail, listen to your gut. It might just save your life.
