To be honest, if I came running out of the woods, literally butt naked, with a handcuff on my wrist and obvious signs of abuse, I too would be offended at being asked to take a lie detector test.

I read a book with similarities to this story in highschool called "The most dangerous game"
Just knowing those men lied to save Robert without knowing what he did. Ultimately making the police completely distrust a survivor is maddeningly frustrating.

I'm with the other people here who have said they probably knew what he did and may have taken part in either the rapes and/or the murders. They should have been arrested and charged for providing false alibis.
It's why he straight up forgot where some of the victims were buried - they weren't his kills
This is so infuriating because even though Cindy was traumatized and terrified after being assaulted and almost killed she still did everything she could to get the police to catch this guy and they even with all the evidence and support they just left it which resulted in the death of more women. Cindy is incredible brave and selfless for doing what she did and I hope she was able to recover from what happened.

I learned that living in the same neighbourhood at the time that the Yorkshire ripper was killing women every couple of weeks. The police didn’t take any of it seriously, it was just sex workers. Until he started to kill ‘’ innocent women’’ there words not mine. as if somehow it was ok to kill some women but not the innocent ones. It’s amazing how women are ranked into innocent or deceiving of their fate because somehow they asked for it and the law not there for them. I hope time have changed.But I doubt it.

You are totally right too there are two justice systems in this country, one for the rich and one for the poor, it's insane what you can get away with if you have money. Sad too what happened to Cindy with the lie detector BS too when lie detectors are famously not admissible in court because they are pseudoscience nonsense that don't prove one way or another if someone is lying or not, they only prove someone is nervous.
The woman who escaped was really smart for realizing that she would’ve been killed if she didn’t escape right away. That’s so terrifying to think about what could’ve happened to her if she didn’t jump out of the plane.
If she didn’t escape she might’ve been one of those women who will never be identified. What a horrific story I hope that bastard suffered when he died

I met Robert Hansen and shook his clammy hand. True story: In 1982 I worked at a convenience store in Fairview, an Anchorage community surrounding a main drag. His bakery was creatively named "Hansen's Bakery" and was next door to the QwikStop in the strip mall on Gambell. It was early morning and I happened to be ending shift as the "night guy".
Through the glass door to the hallway and his bakery I saw Mr. Hansen and thought I'd step over and meet this dude who owned the donut place next door. We bought donuts from, of course. I'm very tall and I remember him looking up at me with an expressionless face and those same glasses you see at 15:50 in this video. He softly said "hi" in a voice that sounded like he was talking to himself.
"Not a real outgoing guy", I thought to myself. But I admired him for starting up his own gig and making the American Dream happen for him. I hopped in my car and went home, not knowing I had just met a man who had either recently finished a "hunt" or was getting ready for his next. I shook the hand of a serial killer, not long before he was caught. Eww. This is a true story and I will never forget the look on his face.

He did live the American Dream to the fullest - taking the freedom of others and mercilessly killing and torturing them.

The more I watch these videos, the less faith I have in cops.
That is indeed the appropriate way to feel about cops. The *only* story anyone needs to hear to completely disregard the idea that the police can be trusted more than any other stranger with a gun is that of Jeffrey Dahmer. One of his victims got away, got to the cops, after having a hole drilled in his head and acid poured into it, and they gave him back to Dahmer, all the while making homophobic jokes.
I think that the security guard didn't see him since in the video the guy said he saw a man( He doesn't identify the man as Robert at all in the video) doing something suspicious so he wrote the license plate and probably just left immediately. But then again why didn't the police ask Robert about who drove the car that night since he was "innocent" because of the alibi's ? The answer is simply since in the video it explains that the police didn't believe what Cindy said anymore since the alibi's covered Robert at the time , so they probably took the story as a hoax and took her words as lies due to Cindy not taking the lie detector, so they most likely dismissed her words as lies so yea. In short the security guard said something crucial that would have blow the case open with Cindy's first-hand account if the police were just bit more convinced by Cindy but because she didn't want to take the lie detector test her words were regarded false and Robert with that notion could have lied that a friend of his was at the hangar getting something for him and since the security guard to my knowledge didn't see Robert at all could not deny this lie , so yea it was a great opportunity for justice but with an unfortunate horrifying conclusion of an ending since we now know what happened to those ladies who suffered a fate so gruesome and the killer almost got away with it. If I'm wrong pls correct me.
Then you're paying attention. The police aren't here to protect us. At best they sometimes solve crimes after the damage is done. But if it's someone from the lower class of society they are more likely to be victimized by the police than helped by them. Damn near a guarantee if you are a minority or someone in crisis.
As much as i agree that the police didnt do their jobs here and treated the victim badly/ let a serial killer continue on the loose, i think ballen said the security guard had seen him the previous day acting weird at the airport, but it was the day after when he was there trying to fly his victim away, the alibi was from when the woman escaped, not for any previois days he was there.
Sadly I think the cops thought who should we believe? A “respectable local business man” or a “working girl” I imagine it came down to that rationale, wrong as it is for them to make assumptions in that way. I guess it is only human to do that although life is full of people examples why we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Like walking into a shop wearing a suit or smart shoes shirt and tie nobody gives you a second glance. Wear a hoody security will follow you in case you shoplift. Or take the example in the brilliant dark but funny cartoon Monkey Dust (3 seasons but I think the BBC only released 1 on DVD as they were scared about some of the sketches in later seasons). Anyway….there is a sketch about 2 guys being interviewed to be pilots. The first guy looks immaculate and scored top marks for his flying ability but because he had a weird voice they didn’t give him the job. The other guy had a claw for a hand and was constantly drooling and failed all his flying tests. But then he says in a perfect English accent “well folks this your captain speaking settle in for your flight we’ll be arriving at your destination on time”. And they say “great when can you start?” and he gets the job😂
Mr.ballen is like that substitute teacher everyone loves. Gets caught up telling stories all period and we end up getting no class work done

I got that beat.. Senior year my english teacher had a baby like a month into the year and we had a substitute the whole rest of the year.. It was this old Pakistani dude that didnt give a fuckkkk about anything. We never opened a book. Never took a test. Never had homework or classwork. He spent the entire class period drawing students names in cool fonts on index cards to post inside our lockers. Not kidding.. That is literally all he did. Day in and day out just drawing names all fancy like. Can't blame him tho. He was getting paid to chill all day and be one of the homies. If you didnt wanna come to class you just tell him ahead of time and he had your back.. Dude was like 80 years old but the funniest old man i ever met. Mr Manda was a true OG
Imagine being the girl who escaped and finding out what she had almost been a victim of.
I'm also imagining how many bodies are undiscovered in that general area.
I mean, if people just discovered three by accident in an area that is so sparsely populated, imagine how many are buried or laying around in the open and just haven't been found.

I've heard this story so many times, and it's still my number one fear. Absolutely terrifying.The mental torture thinking I'm free to be hunted is absolutely horrifying. Cindy is and was a hero.
I remember reading a short story called “Dangerous Game” in middle school. It was about a hunter who washed up on an island after a shipwreck and found a rich hunter living there who loved to hunt dangerous animals and had made a sport of hunting humans who washed up on the island. The the rest of the story followed the protagonist being forced to play a twisted game of cat and mouse with the rich hunter.
Was just thinking about this. In my freshman year I read that and I thought that this was awfully similar to that. But this came after that was written I believe. Possible he read it and thought, "Oh cool, I'm going to do this"
The Most Dangerous Game was one of my favorite reads in my earlier high school days, even watched the film on it from the 30s, was very interesting.
Good book. It is called "the most dangerous game in the world " written by Richard Connell in 1924.
A classic in the early 20th century horror literature.
It's just crazy to me that a teenager who is clearly terrified, can describe everything about this man perfectly and was found running half naked down the road with handcuffs on is not enough evidence to say this is the guy. That's wild.
It's because cops don't generally trust prostitutes. That's one of the things that makes prostitutes easy targets for serial killers.

Definitely the case! Even if she was handcuffed with gun raised at her, she should try and take the chance while in the car to try and cause a head on collision, this is only way to get attention and if someone is pointing a gun at you, then it's only soon or later that they kill you. So may as well try cause a visible accident before being taken to perpetuators place.

Let's not forget that this happened decades ago. But the fact that they doubted her story RIGHT AWAY when she refused the lie detector kinda proves they'd rather believe the perpetrator at the time. Why? Coz of her job. It's just sad how they've already got a bunch of cold murder/missing person cases in the area and they chose not to lean heavily on the first major lead they had.

I’m from Alaska and went to university in Anchorage. The scariest part of this case to me was I remember sitting in a law class discussing this and we had an elderly gentleman who sat in the back who told us about going to Robert Hansen’s bakery as a small child with his mom and he would give him sugar cookies and tell him how much of a cute kid he was. He said it messed with his head as adult to learn what that man was doing on the side and reconciling it the image of kindly baker he had. He warned us that you never truly know a person. (Annnnnnd Israel Keyes was arrested around three months later that year. It was a busy time to be in anchorage 😬)
Cindy is a Hero. She was only 17. She suffered at his hands & managed to escape a serial killer & saved so many other girls from suffering the same fate.
I do hope Cindy is in a good place & living the life she always wanted to
You must have missed the part where Cindy didn't call the police it was the hotel clerk who involved the cops not Cindy it was only after she had to talk to authorities that she did, say someone who sees a fire and doesn't say anything...is that a hero? After she didn't alert the cops immediately Cindy wasn't believed initially she skipped town, if anyone is the hero it's the hotel clerk who called the cops

I’m not surprised that Cindy refused the lie detector test. To be a victim of such a horrific crime and then to hear that the cops don’t believe you would probably be enough to break you.
@Azzir And you didn't understand the comment. When police asked her to do the test, it meant that they didn't believe her. So, they didn't believe her -> asked for a polygraph test -> she said "no". It doesn't matter what MrBallen said. For police to ask someone to do a polygraph test, they have to have suspicion that the person is not telling the truth. The fact that she refused the test only reassured them in their own suspicion. They didn't think that there could have been another reason to refuse the test, other than lying.
In any case, I’m pretty surprised that given all of the information that the victim was able to provide that matched the killer, they dropped him as a suspect immediately just because his friend vouched for him over the phone. Not only that, but they then started doubting the victim. You know, the woman who was found running out of the forest, naked and terrified, wearing handcuffs.
At the very least they should have asked the guy if he would go down to the station to answer some questions.

2 friends gave alibis that lined up. I doubt when asking, the cops would be fully transparent and ask "were you with __ at this time last night?" And it'd be more like "what were you doing around (this time) last night?"
Ultimately I don't know how it was asked, so it's all speculation. But if it is the latter, for 2 separate people to give matching alibis would be pretty convincing.
At the end of the day, she should've just taken the polygraph test. It would've erased any doubt and brought the killer to justice much faster. Cops ask for polygraph tests to determine what is truth and what isn't.

@@robertmedina5997 The police had no legal basis to get, Hansen, to take a lie detector test. But, they could have put a tracking; device on his vehicle and looked to see where he went, if any kind of a pattern emerges. Over time, it would have. Then using a pretext, they could have questioned him. Discrepancies would soon become apparent, leading to more questions. There's little doubt that inconsistencies would occur. As, Abraham Lincoln, famously said, "To be a good liar, you better have a damn good memory". Most people don't. That's how most criminals get caught.

Yeah, I use this like a podcast because his storytelling is so good that his voice alone is enough to visualize the whole thing. Even when I've watched because of there being a picture or video with the story, though, I'm too distracted by the story to find the secret.
wait so let me get this straight. The girl ran out of the woods half naked, with a handcuff, told the police her story in vivid detail with nothing left out. Led them to the hanger where the plane was where she left her shoe, some guy who was working at the airport said the owner looked suspicious, they went to the guys house and everything was exactly as she had described it, but they guys friends said he was with them so they were like, "well, he must be innocent."

Me and my friends watched this video a few years ago, probably around the time it came out at a sleepover. We were traumatized and had achieved exactly what we clicked on it for. Great horror story.
Part of this torture that seems to get overlooked is that fact this was in Alaska and these women had to run with no clothes on for hours or days. So not only are they handcuffed and blindfolded but they are freezing. That makes it even worse.
Can we all just thank that security guard for doing his job so well💯💯💯
Don't forget the motel clerk. While the security guard might not have tied the situation to a crime (keeping in mind a plane's owner would generally be an upper middle class person), he still jotted down the license plate. That was good on him for being a good observer. The clerk made the effort to call the police based on something not seeming to be right with the young guest. That got the 'ball rolling' as far as getting the murderer attention that would eventually be his undoing. On a side note, that was disturbing that a couple people corroborating a simple story could derail the entire young victim's timeline of events, especially considering she had many details up to and including a plane (where the security guard confirmed tying the guy to the girl's story).

My mother was an English professor in maximum security prisons in the ‘80s, and was Hansen’s teacher. She said he was always polite, but that she had to be locked in a room with him. This made her uncomfortable, in spite of her experience with other killers. It’s thought that, like a more recent AK serial killer, Israel Keyes, the Butcher Baker is responsible for murders in the lower 48. For me, the heartbreaking takeaway is the blatant disregard of sex workers, people as valuable as any others.

refusing to take a lie detector test isn't a sign of guilt or trying to hide something. its pretty common knowledge that those things are notoriously unreliable so lots of people refuse to take them out of fear that they might have a false positive and wrongly incriminate them.

I actually had a very similar situation in Waycross Georgia in 2008. I was on my way back to college, it was late (11PM-ish), and I was stopped at a stop sign trying to figure out which way to go (no GPS). As I was sitting there (no traffic at the overpass) looking at a map, a lady jumped in the passenger side and just said "drive", which I did. I was kinda freaked out, but I got her away from there and ended up taking her to the police department. Apparently her bf had gotten high on coke and started beating the shit of of her and she ran with him coming after her.

The moral of the story is: never ever comply with anyone who asks you to lie to the police and be an alibi for them! You will not only protect yourself but could possibly save a current victim & future victims of serial killers.
If someone said they needed an alibi, I’d lie and say I would be one but when the time would come for me to make good on my promise, well, a promise and a law aren’t the same thing, I can make a promise, but unlike a law, I don’t need to hold true to it
As I recall he told them he was with prostitutes and thats why he needed the alabi. Alaska in the '80s was still wild and overwhelmingly male. Whats weird is how many serial killers were operating in the Pacific NW at the same time. So many ultra young prostitutes then too.

There was also another possibility that could not be ruled out in their minds as they investigated... she could be an angry ex girlfriend, that's why she knew all of those specific details.
They of course believed her story, but they needed sonething to compel a judge to find just cause to issue a search warrant on a person's property.
In this case... it was the results of the lie detector.
That would prompt a judge to issue a search warrant, therefore allowing them to gather the evidence they needed to convict Robert.
Police can't just charge into someone's property and flip it upside down.
Judges can't just give search warrants out like candy otherwise the State can be sued.
This is going to sound like victim blaming... but Cindy should have taken the lie detector.

The judge could have signed off the warrant without any further evidence if the officers stated reasonable suspicion; if there wasn't enough evidence to support that suspicion before the LDT, the LDT wasn't going to make any difference.

In my early 20's I had a guy say he was a professional photographer and wanted me to meet him to take my picture. Good thing I was suspicious and thought he was a creep. It may not have ended up this bad but it's never worth the risk.
Same thing happened to me in my 20s, in WA. I had stopped for directions, and as I got back in my car a man in his 40's, roundish puffy face, thinning blonde hair, approached and said he was a photographer. He wanted me to go with him. I declined, said I'd take his card. He didn't have one, and tried to convince me several more times, that I also declined, until he walked away. I drove off, and kept looking to see if I was followed. Idk what kind of creeper he was, but no doubt he was lying.

He already had a speech impediment and was determined to be well liked in a community with straight laced normal law abiding citizens. I mean, he owned a bakery. That's a pretty likeable job in the eyes of a nice little community. His speech impediment most likely left him craving the feeling of fitting in & was probably bullied in school. I think it may have stopped him from getting many dates or he was too shy? His true behavior could (likely) stems from childhood. I would love to know more about how he grew up. Anyways, he picked girls who were "vulnerable" as he told police. The girls who he saw as very needy, lonely and were likely not to be missed too much considering the industry they were in. That to me has coward written all over it. He made dang sure that he had all the power over already powerless girls (in so many ways). The ages tell a story. He picked teens. They aren't as street smart as they haven't really lived long enough to gain experience with the really horrible things in life, I mean they likely fled their homes from really bad situations which left them very vulnerable & not much time to gain a solid footing in life. Running from one horrible thing to another. Teens and early 20s are still naive to a degree regardless of what they've been through. Not only that but their critical thinking skills are not quite developed fully yet making it just one more vulnerability playing in his favor. This guy was a coward through and through. Definitely not an Alpha & in prison the Alphas can smell a beta a mile away. I hope he got all sorts of nasty things happen in jail. He felt like that because he was like that, a coward.

He's a good person he tells the story down to the point I like the stories that he tells
I feel like if anyone else told this story, I would be having nightmares for days. Mr. Ballen just has such a calm voice, it makes these terrible stories watchable. He is just such a good storyteller.
He's respectful about the victims. That's what makes the big difference and why he's so well received, too, I think.

probably because of his sealery, we can assume he has quite some emotional controll and stress-resistence. That enables him to keep his trademark calm while telling even the most horrific stories. also, as @Rose Madder said, that he speaks respectfully about the victims makes a big difference.
I had the worst dream last night. Was scared to go back to sleep. Been watching these stories for a few days.. I wonder if that could be one of the causes.
As an Alaskan, I am super satisfied by how often AK is mentioned in this channel. The great north is vicious sometimes.

Alaska has the highest serial killer rate per population of all the states 😳 I wouldnt be satisfied to have my state featured, id be terrified bc of how dangerous it is!

My heart really goes out to these women in this video. It doesn’t matter that they were prostitutes or dancers or whatever. They were women. Their lives matter. And hopefully somehow Cindy will see that because of her testimony, many lives were saved and families got closure.
If it doesn't matter, why do you mention it? Same as they gender, and the commentary that their lives matter... of course they matter, same as any human life...and your barely represed prejudices rear their ugly heads everywhere, champ... one can just hope someday you "Wokers" realize how much damage you do with this kind of speech.
You do know people are idiot's yes? This person was just clarifying that it doesn't matter what your gender is and what you do for a living. Have you ever been on other apps besides youtube? Do you know how quick people are to judge someone with one small piece of information?
@@TheChzoronzon I mentioned it for several reasons. The first is that it stated here that the police and others tend to not even make an effort to find missing prostitutes, transgender, or simply person's of a different social group. Secondly, man y rapists and murderers pick these people because they know those cases don't get the same attention as other classes get. Many times no one even knows that they are missing. Just like the guy with the pig farm. He killed over 100 women in what others consider to be a low class person. He knew it would hardly be looked into. I've also heard police admit that they r less likely to believe women who are in what they call "a lower class of people". I have a daughter who is trans. And the treatment she has gotten just in her job alone is just ridiculous. I see the tears every night. I see the hurt and pain. People need to treat every e equally regardless. I know the hurt and pain of being abused by my birth parents, and in foster care and as an adult in an abusive marriage. And I know the pain of these things. I know how it aches. I've never been in this group of people, but I can only imagine what it's liken to be assaulted and have no one listen to them. To be accused of lying. To be told it didn't matter cuz they asked for it. Or some say oh they r on drugs so they deserve what they got. No one deserves to be violated...(I'll make the exception for child molesters, rapists, murderers.....Even animal abusers. But I also believe in our justice system and I believe in God and heaven and hell. Its not my place to be the judge, jury and executioner.
So have a little compassion and pull your head out of your back side. Be a human being.

Ive been a stripper for years..stories like this always scared the shit out of me and are the reason why I never saw anyone outside of work. Not even for dinner, not even for alot of money, no matter how nice the guy seemed. Im too paranoid.
