JOINTING WITHOUT A DOMINO OR BISCUIT JOINER | How to make easy to build Doweling Jigs

  • For a future project I have to join several slats together. I want to do that with wooden dowels. So I build two Doweling Jigs for this job. I built two of them, because I was curios to see which one is more precise. Both of those Doweling Jigs are very precise, because of the method I made them. One Doweling Jig is a tiny bit more precise than the other one. For one method to build a Doweling Jig, you even don't need a drill press. You can build it, by drilling the holes free hand, and it will be still very precise. I hope you like this two Doweling Jigs as much as I do. Please leave a comment if you like those or not.

I have to agree with you that this jig will work better than a one sided jig (like I also use and made a video about 😅). This jig is going on my to do list to make. Thanks for the video and I will be back for more 👍

I’m thinking about how you might be able to make the first jig even more precise. Could you determine which side is slightly off center and add some thin tape to the face of the jig to correct it? Thank you for your great ideas and jigs! DaveH

I would definitely use the second jig, the first one relies on you being able to drill two straight and right angled holes to the jig and you have to get that right or the holes will not line up when you use the jig as the holes will be offset bu the width of the jig piece if they are not 100% perfect.
The second jig overcomes that as you are using the two centres of the drilled holes as the reference planes so as long as the holes are parallel enough that you can get the dowels in then the outcome will be perfect every time. :-)

I like how you make your jigs. where do you get the tubing and what is it called? I'm in Canada and can find galvanized EMT in 1/2" and 3/4" sizes when I go to Home Depot or Lowes.

Thanks. This are normal stainless steel tube. Your drill has to just fit inside.

Thank you for the idea for a low cost doweling jig.
In my opinion, both the jigs should produce accurate results. Is it possible that when you used the first jig, you drilled the holes a fraction of a millimeter away from the right spot?
Your bench vise looks quite impressive. Can you tell me the brand, size and price? Thanks.

My vise is a German Product : www.obi.ch/spannwerkzeuge/lux-schraubstock-sst-125-d-comfort/p/2935195
But this one looks quite similar : www.amazon.com/IRWIN-Tools-Multi-Purpose-5-Inch-4935505/dp/B009TOCZEC/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=vise&qid=1569992724&sr=8-10

It may work, but it’s cumbersome and complicated. I don’t think it will produce repeatable results.

If you have the inclination, stop by my tiny channel and show some support. Cheers from Norway.

You might think that I'm trying to troll you, but I'm not. Your title should be "JOINING WITHOUT...", not "JOINTING WITHOUT..."
Jointing in English is trueing the edge or face of a board, done on a jointer or by hand plane. Joining is fitting two boards together which is the point of the video, I think.
