    Great, great song. Terry Kath, one of the Best guitarist ever. He played w styles, often w reserve in rhythm. Missed the end never played w/o. Great expression of anytime or type.

    Early Chicago was a blast. Hendrix thought Terry Kath was an outstanding guitar player, and that's saying a lot. The song Introduction from their debut album was written by him. He didn't know how to read or write music, so he just wrote it in his head. The other guys could, so they interpreted his ideas into sheet music that they could follow. The band raves about this in later interviews, saying the parts were very complex, including weird time signatures. Such a tragic loss to the band. Cheers!

    You should listen to the entire ballet together. The individual songs can certainly stand on their own, but it is part of a ballet. An awesome ballet!

    You guys are actually listening to one song taken out of context from their second album. Trombone player James Pankow wrote a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". "Make Me Smile" opens the suite, the track ends with Terry Kath's guitar solo, its reprise "Now More Than Ever" that closes the suite was appended after the guitar solo to make the single release heard on the radio. Pankow wrote the suite for a girl from West Virginia that he was in love with. Guitar player Terry Kath is on lead vocals on this track, "Colour My World" (the 5th movement), and "Now More Than Ever". There are three instrumental-only movements in the suite.
    If not for a reaction video at least for your own understanding of Chicago's early years I recommend that you listen to the entire suite uninterrupted. They were seven highly talented musicians that blended several genres together into something new. On their debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority, there are many fantastic songs. Start with the opening track "Introduction" and enjoy it all the way through. "Poem 58" will display for you Terry Kath's mastery of the guitar that led Jimi Hendrix to tell the band "your guitar player is better than me!" when Hendrix saw them playing the Whisky A Go go in L.A.

      Doh, here... Yes, I understand. I knew it was part of a longer piece but had forgotten how encompassing it was. Thanks.

      Yes, I would love to hear a reaction to the entire suite; it is such an unusual piece of music, and so well done.

    What? Generic love song? Maybe it's the remastered version? Live is better as too much reverb is put in!! Anyway, Terry has an amazing soulful voice and in 25 or 6 to 4 shows what a brilliant guitarist he was!! Live at Tanglewood is best!!

      John Doh, here... Dave was referring to the lyrics exclusively when he said "generic love song." He very much enjoyed the song, musically-speaking.

      “25 or 6 to 4” is a great song, along with “Saturday in the Park.”

    Generic????????????? Really?......interesting.

      Doh, here... as I've explained in other similar shocked replies, Dave meant that the lyrics reflect a love song. No deep hidden or cryptic meaning in them, a basic love song. Musically it soars. Dave is a NEWB to this business of reactions and he has gotten much better than those done in our first week, like this one.

      @@LiteralistReactions I love Chicago, but I can see how this is a generic love song.....but the music sets it apart.

    Early Chi town good....later Chi town yuk! When their lead guitar player died, they became a pop band!

      Doh, here... William... "Pop" does not equate to "bad." Remember, "Pop" stands for POPULAR. I think we could agree that the larger majority of people are somewhat musically untrained. Worse than that, their EARS are untrained. That some songs are deemed more accessible to the masses does not mean it's bad, in and of itself. Any song, 4/4 or other, can be a passionate piece of true art. Also, sometimes, one's environment raises a song's value, making an OK, or even "bad" song, good. (See our review of The Rain by Oran "Juice" Jones for a great example.) A basic pop song that got kids to dance in Junior High may not be high art, but that doesn't make it bad or not worth your time.

    If you want to try to understand the complexity and sheer brilliance of the chord construction, time signatures, and vocals of this song, there's no better place to go than Rick Beato's explanation of what makes this song great. Compared to this piece, most modern music is pure pablum

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  2 роки тому

      Doh, here... @RickBeato is my kinda nerd. He has forgotten more about music construction than I will ever know. I'm a music lover, he's a music lover, player, designer, student, teacher, and encyclopedia.

      It seems they used the album track, which ends after the guitar solo then goes to the next movement in the suite. The single release appended "Now More Than Ever" which is a reprise of "Make Me Smile".
