Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in disguise) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave, on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.

This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

Really a fun song. I am on the same page as LD about liking songs where you can hear and comprehend the lyrics being sung. A common characteristic of all the great artists you are presenting - Yes, Peter Gabriel, Rush, Jethro Tull, Supertramp - and many others of this era is their originality. Although they borrowed and built on aspects of music before them, they were not formulaic and had the guts to put out their own ideas and style. Also, the fact that they had the freedom to do so, which is not always easy when record companies hold the cards (see Rush:2112 and their references therein to Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone fame, who they admired as he was also a strong advocate for artistic freedom).
May as well do The Logical Song next.

I agree with Dave on his first response about the type of dreamer being called out in this song. You picked up on the hands in your head/head in your hands link perfectly. This song is about the futility & consequences of dreaming in the wrong way ~ "Now there's not a lot I can do" tells us that the dreamer has messed up quite a bit. I don't agree with encouragement at the end, though. I'm pretty sure that's sarcasm in the back and forth with Rick Davies. "Take a lie, take a dreamer", Take a life, take a holiday", "We'll work it out someday" ~ all of that before the final encouragement to dream along. And that classic glockenspiel outro that sounds like a musical box for a child to go to sleep & dream to. It's all so perfectly crafted. Roger Hodgson gave us many songs to encourage dreaming with, but not this one. I really enjoyed this upload because I've hardly ever heard anyone really get into the lyrics of this track. And the way you expressed the valleys & peaks musically was very cool as well. Thank you!

Roger wrote this song at his mother's house when he was 19. They don't make teenage musicians like that anymore. Lol

Really enjoying the classic progressive rotation. Styx, Supertramp,. Jethro Tull, Rush, and so on. Great music that works great for Dave to react to.

One of eight masterpieces from their masterpiece album of masterpiece albums. How strong is this album? Dreamer might be the weakest song on it...
The Steely Dan connection is well placed, both bands take chances using different elements in rock(especially jazz elements) and know how to produce/engineer a song. Neither artist bores you, musically or lyrically
