People tend to seriously understate the abilities of Brian Hugh Warner. The guy is a vocal genius. I mean, he's absolute shit for managing human relationships, but he's a vocal genius.
If you analyze Marilyn Manson’s performances back in the late 90’s, you can tell he was applying grit and distortion in the wrong places of his throat. That’s why you’ll hear is voice crack and not project due to no warmups and wrong technique. He started using proper fry screaming technique on GAOG.
Well, kinda... I think he sounded great on Tourniquet for example but also he sounded quite different on it as well a few other older songs like "lunchbox"... which means he was mostly experimenting and discovering his voice I think similar can be said about "The beautiful people". But yuh he did not do it correctly because he sounded wildly inconsistent during his live shows... kinda all over the place. TGAOG was a good album and sounded more consistent but this was also when he lost his voice... some time after that record... which is why we started getting light albums like "Eat me, drink me", and that "High end of Low"... really mellow stuff because he blew his voice out with songs like "this is the new *hit", so I doubt he mastered the technique perfectly. Albums post TGAOG are kind of painful to listen to in all honesty, because even on the record his voice sounds destroyed. Recently I think he managed to recover somewhat but I think it's a little too late for him to be as good as he could have been with that naturally interesting voice of his. Obviously his drug and alcohol problems add to his voice damage significantly...
@rvidal0001 on This is the new **** his distortion is basically fry scream. And on lows in the verses it’s also basic fry. Try to learn how to do those verses with fry first before attempting to do those intense choruses. But you have to know how to belt properly as well as he kind of has a pitch underneath that scream means he engages his true vocal folds and adds distortion on top from soft pallet area. For this type of singing/screaming you should not engage your true vocal folds or any tension in your neck really. The steps I’d recommend for you to take is: 1. Learn about basic fry in your chest register 2. Learn how to belt and sing that chorus clean 3. Try Applying distortion when you can sing that chorus with your clean voice without tension or discomfort. I don’t really know what your level is so I am just breaking down everything. For most stuff I mentioned Chris has videos where covers those techniques, you should check them out.

In that case, I'll indicate where. Cheers! :)
Manson has always had that voice that was able do the dark low like what you'd expect from a Dracula type character and then the other side is like a person so intense they're losing their sanity, and then finally there's the full blown screams. btw, have you done a video on the vocals from American Head Charge, kinda similar to Manson but super melodic on the singing chorus' too. please do more of these vocal analysis videos. Its interesting stuff to learn, especially from more Metal-Context singers
👍 Yes! I really enjoy this video. I know Marylin Manson but I never pay attention to his singing. I’ve got to know another singing style, technic and express through your video. Thank you 🙏
Yesss, been wanting a video like this. His fry and whisper rasp come naturally to me since my speaking voice is somewhat similar to his, but I've been stuck trying to mimic the rest. He has a note of nasality to his voice that I struggle to find.

"Characters" is the perfect word to describe all his different voices, dynamics and intonations; I'd even go as far as to say that he actual thinks of it like that, because in his earlier work (think Sweet dreams) and specially on Antichrist Superstar there's a lot of voice change wich usually occurs along a change in narrator, perspective or feeling in the lyrics. In songs like Chryptorchid, Apple of Sodom, The beautiful people and specially Kinderfeld (here the different voice changes correspond to different characters) this technique seems more than intentional
Amazing stuff as always. Would definitely love to see you break down Daniel Tompkins from TesseracT, especially since they released Live in The Lockdown gig this spring where you can hear Dan's current range and style exceptionally well due it being a relatively raw take with no extra doublings.
Oh good! Ya no need for a long intro anymore... Was probably helpful in the beginning, but people know what I'm doing now... no need to drag things on :)
The thing with these kind of vocals is that it is way difficult live/in rehearsals to cut through the band, wheras in the studio you can do all sorts of things there to help it get up front. At least, that's what happens with me, maybe I just sawk at it! Anyway! Cool shirt, by the way!
Check out Dani Filth, his screams are ear-piercing. With Manson, I always thought the way he incorporates his vocals into his personas that his sound falls more in the category of performance art into and of itself. Technically, you could say any vocalists is a performance artist, but Manson, takes artistic license with it unlike any other I have seen except maybe Alice Cooper or David Bowie. That creative vocals, without software, is something most artists today lack the ability to do. They focus way to much on the technical aspects that they forget to incorporate a little bit of creativity. The hall mark of actually being an "artist".
I do agree. Manson got me into COF; I was just obssesed with creepy vocals when I was a teen, and honestly both Manson and Filth are the two GOATS when in comes to creepy/dynamic, character based vocals, IMO

PS2: As research in the topic are still being made, there is a possibility that I'll edit something. In that case, I'll indicate where.
Cheers! :)
I love your videos so much! I've actually been learning Maynard's vocal style and you've been a huge help! Also I've been practicing Manson as well :)
nice!
beeen waiting for this forever!!1
Ohhhhhhhh I was waiting for this one!!!!!!
i’d luv to see u react to mark lanegan
Proud to be a Marilyn Manson fan🤘
Nice video❤️
he has good technique and he can sing it a fact
Same!!
Thank you master
I absolutely love this video!
Very good video bro, leaned a lot 👍
what impresses me is that his vocal does not change with the years
Your kidding right? You see no difference from antichrist superstar to we are chaos?
@@fbi2795 we are chaos is a whole new story lololollol
@@cottonhatcat6401 I wasn't talking about the lyrical content
The man said "his vocals have not changed through the years" and they couldn't be more different..........
@@fbi2795 I mean, the tone and all that shit, I was comparing it to other artists like axl for example, and you're exaggerating to say that it's changed, it's almost the same thing but with less "screaming" I don't know how to say
I love this songs even more now!
Watching this video and it drew my daughters attention from her cartoons. She stared for a good min. haha. Awesome as always.
haha... nice :)
amazing video! I remember when I suggested this, would love to see you try Chad Kroeger !!!!
i was just thinking the other day that you should do a video on Marilyn Manson you read my mind
My idea is, Marilyn's not just fry, he sometimes sounds like Vocefaringea, that's Pharyngal voice.
This is gold bro you should julian casablancas from the strokes next :D
"Characters" is the perfect word to describe all his different voices, dynamics and intonations; I'd even go as far as to say that he actual thinks of it like that, because in his earlier work (think Sweet dreams) and specially on Antichrist Superstar there's a lot of voice change wich usually occurs along a change in narrator, perspective or feeling in the lyrics. In songs like Chryptorchid, Apple of Sodom, The beautiful people and specially Kinderfeld (here the different voice changes correspond to different characters) this technique seems more than intentional
Another one of those dynamic signers. Haven't heard anything after Eat Me, Drink Me. Need to have another listen.
I came from your course.....it works
I learn singing solely on your channel videos 😝
So cool!
Bro,you should of covered angel with the scabbed wings,he has some insane vocal delivery on that song
Great video. Please make more of Marilyn Manson.
Yes please more MM 🙏🏻😁😁
Amazing stuff as always. Would definitely love to see you break down Daniel Tompkins from TesseracT, especially since they released Live in The Lockdown gig this spring where you can hear Dan's current range and style exceptionally well due it being a relatively raw take with no extra doublings.
Tompkins/TesseracT is definitely ON THE LIST :)
The way you're way better, more useful and more "you can sing anything" than that other famous vocal guy called K.T., is priceless, man :-)
I am SO glad that you cut the intro Chris! I think you and your viewers will benefit off this decision :)
Oh good! Ya no need for a long intro anymore... Was probably helpful in the beginning, but people know what I'm doing now... no need to drag things on :)
that was amazing, dude
Hola Mike Bravo, que haces reviando los comentarios? sigue practicando que te queremos ver ganador de Yo SOy Grandes Batallas .
I think one on Jim Morrison would be awesome. Maybe one on When the Musics Over (the famous live one you can find on yt).
The screaming sound like anime boy lol. Great video man.
Brilliant. Thank you.
awesome video
The thing with these kind of vocals is that it is way difficult live/in rehearsals to cut through the band, wheras in the studio you can do all sorts of things there to help it get up front. At least, that's what happens with me, maybe I just sawk at it! Anyway!
Cool shirt, by the way!
I agree. That’s why studios are so fun to experiment in! Glad you liked the shirt :)
I also would LOVE to see a breakdown of Dani Filth!!
I do agree. Manson got me into COF; I was just obssesed with creepy vocals when I was a teen, and honestly both Manson and Filth are the two GOATS when in comes to creepy/dynamic, character based vocals, IMO
Hey Chris could I please request Mike Patton (Faith no More, Tomahawk, Mr Bungle, Dead Cross Peeping Tom, Fantomas, etc etc etc) thank you so much for all you do. It's genuinely appreciated.
Who is this man who is so wise in the ways of singing?
This was awesome. I have a wide variety of tastes and mm is one of them. Really like how you dig deep and pick the techniques apart. I'm trying all of them as you do them :)
I'd be interested if you'd try Peter Tägtgren.... His work in Bloodbath. He has an amazing growl and is one of my favorite harsh singers. Very expressive and kind of saturated in his tone. Mikael Åkerfeldt is great too. Also Mike has a lovely singing voice you'd probably dig as well.
Great ideas! I LOVE this... By everyone's suggestions, I have such a WONDERFULLY expansive evolving set of playlists. And I get to have excuses to listen to 'new' music all the time!
@@chrisliepe if you're serious, the album Peter is on is Nightmares Made Flesh. And for Mike, anything recent in his band Opeth for singing, and The Fathomless Mastery for growls - - my personal fav song there is Hades Rising. 😊🎶I can't tell you if they are growling correctly, and if not I guess my comments are moot.
