    Does using grit still make your cough? Does distortion still cause a bit of pain or choking?
    You might be one of the many singers out there who gets the feeling of singing with distortion one day, but then loses it the next. As your voice wakes up in different moods, certain sensations are harder to get back into your singing. IT IS NORMAL. Every singer has to intentionally learn new ways of re claiming and re discovering things about their voice... Especially with stuff like screaming, gutterals, distortion, grit...
    In this video, I discuss 3 HUGE ways to coax the correct sensations into your voice for completely pain free, controlled and awesome sounding aggressive vocals. All flavors discussed are included! (And we take a few cues from Korn's Jonathan Davis to help us get there!)

    I actually took his course. First his free course and after that i paid for the long one (the one including aggressive singing..). Not only has this helped me A LOT, but after a few weeks of the 12 week program I got an email saying I should book my free 1 hour session with Chris.
    I had no idea that was included (I feel you should promote that more Chris!). But that 1 hour session helped me beyond any expectations. He could see, even with my horrible country house connection that I was tensing my neck, which I hadn’t thought about. So now I can actually sing with grit (in chest working on adding it to my mix) and can hit D5 and even E5 on a good day, and I am 9 weeks in.
    So thank Chris and I highly recommend his course..
    (Still hoping for a Sir Paul vid.. :D )

    jonathan davis is a genius. he preserved his voice (and got better!) over the course over 25+ years and not only knows what he's doing technique-wise but also always puts 100% of genuine, authentic emotion into his vocals. his way of screaming sounds so intense but sounds very "healthy" ^^

      On the first three albums his belting and false cord screaming range capped at the F# and G. Then you listen to the song coming undone many albums later and he's belting A4s. It's crazy because I'm more mid range just like him, and his vocals and vocal transformation taught me that I don't always have to belt super high notes to make the song sound good, and that I have the ability to get better later. I'm really watching this video rn to get a hang of my distortion and on my screams I've finally gotten rid of the "cookie monster" screams, but I can't move my growls higher they're stuck at the A2-C3 area, and definitely sounds like I'm voice acting for the cookie monster.

    Your videos, oh man. I have been singing for my whole life and it has always been quite natural for me to sing. But when i found out heavy metal I have strived to sing like those guys. I have built my range in 5 years so now i can hit those high notes but I never kinda understood how to add grit. From your other videos I learned full on fry scream and false chord screaming but basic distortion has been so hard even tho I have understood the concept of using your lower abdominal muscles. This video unlocked my inner James Hetfield. I'm so stoked that I finally got it and now I can start to harness it. Thank you so much Chris, best vocal coach, period.

    • @JimmyKlef
      @JimmyKlef 3 роки тому +2

      Haha this fundamentally was already. “Humdinga’ went to the park” was basically the scat in “freak on a leash” technique-wise. For his non-gutturals... that “oh noooo” part covered a good amount of jds singing voice. Add vocal fry in parts, and throw in some “cookie monster” technique on certain yells (not much, just a little). But most of JDs “singing” has been the tense, air holding, and some call it the “constipated” vocal technique. So pretend you are constipated... and the sound you make with your voice should be a tense, low air, frustrated sound.
      Now... he has shown this before... and he will definitely show you how to do this safely without hurting your voice. So before you try too much, wait for his video.

    I REALLY like this one - the way you're able to describe placement of these techniques has improved my screaming/distortion/gravelly tones substantially, and this one added a couple more pieces to that puzzle as well.
    I've been thinking about other vocalists that would make for good breakdown material, and I have a list(!) lol - but I think there's a LOT to be learned from *Chad Gray* particularly in his Mudvayne days, I've always admired what he can do with his voice immensely. And he has some of the nicest transitions from clean to distortion/screaming.
    "Nothing to Gein" - probably still his most impressive vocal performance(IMO), a lot of nuance starting right from the beginning with the breathy clean intro that slides into some grit, straight into some squeaky clean harmonies, then straight to Chad's signature growls.
    "World So Cold" - the breakdown from 3:00 to 3:45(album length, not radio edit) is really interesting as Chad shifts between different growls & distortion techniques throughout.
    "Death Blooms" - the vocals at 3:00 at the transition into the bridge is really interesting here too, as Chad starts with a really breathy almost whisper, playing around with pitch before going full send into his growls, a LOT of color in this part(in the whole song really, a LOT of interesting vocals here)
    ...just a few examples of Chad Gray's technical vocals, but I'm in for an analysis of ANY of his vocals, if you're interested in covering his work.
    Anyway, thanks for the incredible work as usual Chris, can't wait for more!

    Like Dio , the Power , is from open throat technique supported by huge diaphragme compression .
    I use that .
    But warming up people say like " there s no projection " , not yet
    As a matured i developped more thick power texture but a lot of people mistake , more modern vocalist of hardcore stuff etc... as well , that the distortion is not due to volume at all .
    When you go full with a good support. The people think we re killing ourselves .
    But not at all , especially with experience you get more gravel in a natural way .
    Distortion volume like you re screaming at your Kids for make their bedroom all the time its the better way to let go your vocal chords and damage it .

    Hi Chris, I really appreciate your videos, i have learned a huge amount from them.... one thing i'm particularly struggling with is the range in the middle of my voice middle C to G, i find placement and applying compression grit or any tone control very difficult, i dont know if this a commen issue for singers, but would appreciate any response, Thanks

    Hi Chris, love your videos - all super helpful experiment exercises. A question: When you go low, gutteral in your sound are you using the low/drying throat clearing style to get those low death metal singer sounds? Or do you keep it high in the grit feeling all the time?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 роки тому

      No, it's higher than the clearing your throat sensation. If it goes that low it'll tickle too much or make you cough if you do it for even a shorter time.

    im watching more and more of your videos and am gonna do your course sometime soon. im getting better at singing higher notes and feel more comfortable belting and adding dirtyness to my voice. ive noticed that after singing roughly 10 minutes or so of straight belting/screaming, my throat gets sore (the physical muscles around it, not like when you have a cold). is this normal considering im new? i really try to push my voice to the top of my range. im sure that has something to do with it. just making sure.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 роки тому +2

      Ya, it's normal... but shouldn't happen once you learn to manage your airflow better! I'll help you with that :)

    My big question always when it comes to distortion is those low growls. How can you use this above the chords part to produce grit and use it for low growls? Keep it up!!

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 роки тому +1

      Right, it doesn't seem like it'd be "above" still, but it is a function of the "polite clearing of the throat" And then the low tone is created by the alteration of the vocal tract above that point of contact.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 роки тому +3

      Totally! It's all about vocal budgeting and learning how to feel your voice. Just like any muscle or part of your body... it gets tired when used and needs rest.
