Kefka did have meaning in his life: To be the loyal lackey. This is also unlike many character tropes where the underling has either a change of heart or secretly plans to kill their master, Kefka didn't actually betray Gestahl. On the floating continent the Emperor basically could have taken the Warring Triad's power for himself, and Kefka probably was fine with this; hell, he'd probably be fine with the Emperor stepping in during his tantrum and destroying the Returners with the Triad's power as well. Problem is the Emperor was afraid of that power and decided that Kefka needed to be put down like a rabid dog, in effect betraying his most loyal servant. This was probably what ultimately broke Kefka in the end, the only man he respected and trusted tried to kill him; sure it's not like he loved or had any affection for Gestahl, but the Emperor was what kept Kefka grounded in reality with a purpose and direction.
With the loss of his Emperor, and thus loss of the meaning in his life Kefka becomes directionless and nihilistic. During the final confrontation at the end of the game it can be viewed that his question to the Returners about what gives their lives meaning is that Kefka is the one asking the question to himself and he's looking for an actual real answer, problem is none of the answers he gets in his opinion are good ones. It's at this point he fully embraces the conclusions that nihilism brings: That if everything is meaningless, then existence itself is pointless; this has the implication that after Kefka destroys everything he'll destroy himself as well. This is also the reason why he says nothing once he's killed, because either way he was going to die; taking the rest of existence with him was just a bonus. This is also the reason why the world wasn't "destroyed" and reduced to atoms, because Kefka only resolved to destroy everything once he became fully convinced that life was meaningless.
Also unlike the endings of other stories of this type: The damage isn't reversed. The world is still in ruins, empires and civilizations carved off the face of the planet; magic also died with Kefka, which of course destroys all the Espers along with him. The only happiness in the end is simply what each person can carve out for themselves, to push forward past despair.
At the end of the day, Kefka didn't really win or lose in a traditional sense; because he never really had any goals for himself, he was simply in the right place at the right time. Although he became a god and irreversibly wrecked the world, they were essentially accidents. Aside from dutifully and loyally serving his emperor, Kefka only materialized a goal for himself moments before the final battle. In terms of a story narrative, Kefka was essentially a force of nature given human form; a force that pushed so many of the protagonists to and past their breaking points, and that's hard enough to do for one character let alone a roster as big as FF6s. Most other stories it's the big bad messing the day of one good guy, but when it comes to Kefka he messed up a lot of different people on personal level either directly or indirectly.

    • @robertbryant8243
      @robertbryant8243 Рік тому +3

The damage isn't reversed, but now that Kefka isn't throwing up clouds of dust and steam with his Rays of Judgement, plants can grow and the world can start to mend.

    • @bradleybourgeois4710
      @bradleybourgeois4710 Рік тому +3

That's a rather interesting take on Kefka and it makes a lot of sense. As pointed out in the video Kefka is murder death kill, but as Fieryjoker stated "on someone's orders" as there is a purpose behind the attrocities he commits. Also, I think Kefka would be a great example of a negative character arc based on your reasoning. Kefka's lie is that he feels that life is inherently meaningless unless there is a direct course. He personally finds meaning in being the loyal servant to Gesthal. However, when he loses his mind and is betrayed by Gesthal, Kefka loses his purpose and sinks keeper in to the lie that life is meaningless, as he has lost his course on life. If it is true in your analysis, he spares the Returners and waits for them to find him so they can give him an answer on what makes life worth living. Despite being given answers on what makes life worth living (love, friendship, the simple pleasures of living), he finds poor answers because there is no explicit direction to follow, as there was with Gesthal's orders and commits to his lie by declaring he'll destroy the world, cemmenting his negative arc.

What's to call? SOLDIERs are effectively FF7's version of Witchers in creation.
The only real difference between the two is that SOLDIERs are, well, soldiers, and Witchers are monster hunting mercenaries. But the way they are formed is functionally the same: augment a normal person through a process most can't withstand to create a super soldier that deals with hard to tackle situations.

Naah I think Emperor Gestahl would been more horrible if he actually succeeded in his plans. Unlike Kefka he'd actually had a plan and would honed his powers to become a true god. He likely would have made an empire like Zeal that never would have fallen and crushed the magicless serf class into dust. There would been no hope in defeating him unlike Kefka who needed to prove humanity was fragile and would expire if it was hit too hard.

See the thing is Kefka might have a tragic backstory.
Remember he was the first to be experimented on with magitech and its known to have potent psychological side effects. The Kefka we know has untreated brain damage and was likely a very different person. His brain simply might not be able to experience any joy or pleasure aside from the sick joy he gets from killing and dominating others. He may be unable to enjoy the pleasures of life that are presented to him as a result of his brain damage.
So yes he's a Joker, with less agency as he was made into a weapon and they just forgot to install the safety. He just followed his programing to kill everything and follow the Emperors orders, until they realized that the order of those commands should have been reversed.

20:03 Gonna stop you right there because he does have a tragic backstory to explain his psychosis, and it /is/ in game. It's explained that Kefka was one of the first people to get the Magicite injection that Celes received later. Because it was a trial version of it, he did get the ability to use magic, but it warped his mind into what it is in FF6. It's extremely missable though, so I'm not surprised it was missed (I think Cid says it? It's in the middle of the game where it's mentioned) Otherwise, a great ride through and through

I mean ultimecia, the emperor, ff13's villain, and cloud of darkness fit the shell archetype.
Sephiroth, Garland, Kuja , and ff15's villain are always just kinda whatever about the setting their thrown into, because they have no reason to really be in their cross overs. I mean sephiroth without memories is just gonna do his duty as a lawful good fighter, and with his memories is going to just fuck off until he can hatch a grand plan. Garland for his part knows the fiends are going to save him and so he doesn't really care what happens in any setting he is dropped into and, as chaos all you see him do is struggle with philosophical questions with a detached air. Kuja for his part really just didn't want to die. So taking him out of his story only works if they can explore what he would do without that constant fear. Like the other middle of the road characters it isn't really fair to say he has no personality, but rather he is very much a victim of circumstance and if he didn't die at the end of his plot he didn't really have any new goals of objectives always following orders until he learned that he was just a really powerful black waltz. As for the ff15 villain guy, he's possessed by all the evils of the world maybe, and so he doesn't really have strong motivations, he'd probably just fuck about in his setting.
exdeath, Golbez, Kefka, and honestly i don't know which ff tactics villain to pick (except ultima he didn't really have enough screen time to have anything going on.) they pretty much all have deep character motivations and actions. All of these guys are very well defined and can't be shell characters without having their characters assassinated.. Each one has deep motivations and personality beyond their actions in the plot and honestly I think the these three probably did the best in dissidia even if I like the characters in groups 2 more for the rolls in their own stories. (excluding the ff15 villain as i don't think he is in anything).

Gilgamesh meanwhile seems to be a character that works both as emotion shell and also just constantly building onto his legacy, cus his original portrayal was so strong and then they decided to do a silly thing and make his reoccurring appearances canon with each other, even if not necessarily in order with each other. And yet his core character is very simple and thus easy to malleable as required, he likes fancy weapons and wants a rematch with Bartz eventually.

Actually! Kefka *does* have a tragic backstory that made him like this. It was revealed in one of the series information books released by the developers and mostly hinted at in the game itself. Its actually a fairly compelling and pretty fucked up one, at that. Apparently he used to be a man rather like Leo (a rather respected general admired by his men with a solid moral compass) and when it came time for the Magitek soldier experiments he volunteered to be patient zero because he didn't want to order his men to undergo risky experimental surgery with unknown side effects. ...Surprisingly, it did not, in fact, make him evil though. It just kind of wrecked his brain in a manner akin to a dementia patient and he started dressing in strange, garish atire and playing with dolls and stuff. He was no longer capable of doing his job because it left him a broken shell of who he used to be so he got replaced. Gestahl kept him around and seemingly gave him a mostly honorary position as his direct subordinate presumably partly because he was willing to do whatever the fuck nobody else would for him and so remained useful to the emperor and partly out of respect for the man he used to be.
So why is he evil? Because he was stuck having to watch his new replacement do what he no longer could better than he ever *did* and that broke him. Which is also why he hates Leo so much: He's very jealous of the man and very spiteful and doesn't have anything else to counterbalance it. Leo is a constant reminder to Kefka of everything he's lost and fills the clown with feelings of inadequacy and self loathing.

He wanted to destroy everything. If he won/succeeded there wouldn't have been an end to the game because there wouldn't have been anything left.

Emet-Selch is my favorite villan in fiction right now. The whole final conflict transends good vs evil because you are both completly justified in your goals. It all boiled down to the fact that there could only be one winner.

I'd assume many of us are not surprised at the alignment breakdown (and if that needle could go further that way, it would for sure). FF6 is my favorite game and there is a constant debate on who is better in the fandom being Kefka or Sephiroth. To keep bias apparent, I like Sephiroth more than Kefka and the big argument in Kefka's favor is that he WON.
I disagree though. I think he got closer to winning than any other FF villain, but I would say he ALMOST won. As I see it, goodhood was not his endgame and the World of Ruin was not the final desire. Just a punchline to his running joke. The punchline was in essence was oblivion. He wanted all that was good/bad/in between to be wiped out. He ALMOST did it, but in the end, he won the major battle but lost the overall war.
Nothing more than just wanting to share my thoughts.

Great video, I really enjoy every Kefka/Sephiroth character analysis vid; they are usually really great.
I'd ask for a Star Wars character, but lets face it either they are waaaay to extensively featured (retriggering your research PTSD from Sephiroth) across 2 continuities or reletively obscure. The one guy I might exclude (Revan) and who features a highly interesting story is centered around being the player character in an all out RPG... damn it. Anyway if a Star Wars char catches your fancy it'd be dope xD

I would have been shocked if anyone suggested anything other than Chaotic Evil was the final answer. He is the epitome of that alignment.
The Joker wasn't being written like Kefka particularly back when FF 6 came out. The Joker been written many different ways over the years in same way batman has. (You get Adam West Camp Joker and Batman, versus 89 Batman is much darker/gothic fantasy.) Killing Joke was a noncanon story at the time that got made canon further down the road. Joker wasn';t about large body counts as he periodically felt bad about things he did. He attacked the Red Skull in a crossover with batman/Cap Americawhen he learned he was a nazi. Joker was like I'm a criminal but I'm still an american...as Joker operated by the trope...even evil has standards. Kefka has never felt guilt or sorry for anything. People who retroactively played FF 6 see Kefka as a Joker knock off...but in reality The Joker became more like Kefka overtime than Kefka aping his style in the first place. Which was a result of the Grim dark 90s steadily making many bad guys a murder machines especially batman villains not because DC copied Kefka as I feel these characters rose to be what they were through their own organic means.
Kefka was made a antithesis to previous FF villains. Most FF villains were stoic serious bad guys. Take Exdeath and Golbez were basically Darth Vader styled villains. (Golbez especially given his 11th hour reveal.) These unstoppable forces of nature that trashed you everytime you came to blows with them as you barely escape with your lives thru most encounters. They don't get angry as they are in control even when it seems like they might have lost something. Kefka is none of that as he thrashes like a toddler when he doesn't get his way. He explodes in anger constantly. He's a rabid dog that the Emperor is barely able to keep on his leash until he can't any longer. I get how this late in gaming history he's an old hat, but he broke the mold at the time he came out.
Kefka is a nihilist trying prove his view to the world which juxpaposes his own beliefs.(If he truly didn't care then he wouldn't bother trying to prove it or if anyone else felt the same.) He believes humans are inheritly weak and will break if something terrible happens to them. This might be a degree of self reflect as has prove everyone is like him so when he ravages the world of balance and knocks it down repeatedly, he feels it will eventually die out if he does nothing else. It has to as if humans could ever recover then his beliefs would be shattered.
So once he's "Won" he binge watches human suffering from his tower. Rather than master his god like powers he just chills because he feels any day now humans will shuffle off the mortal coil. What reason could they possibly have to rally against him and the terrors he's unleashed? Why prepare for an attack that should never come? So while he spends a year doing nothing the returners regain their strength. This is his down fall as he fights them as supreme wizard not as a god since he didn't hone his abilities in that time. The returners declare their reasons and this when you see Kefka get fired up again, as he's had nothing to challenge his might this entire time. We see him ready to take his campaign to murder and scourge the world to the next level...but he doesn't live to see that threat thru.
The irony is if Emperor Gestahl had actually taken control of the power kefka usurped he probably would have made a lasting tyrannical reign that would actually broke humanity in ways Kefka never could. He would devoted himself to snuffing out all forms of resist and probably this concept was where square got the idea for Zeal in Chrono Trigger as he likely would created a similar empire of floating islands ruling with a magi noble class over magicless serfs. Emperor Gestahl probably could only been defeated by his own loyalists he empowered once he got himself set up as the peasants on the ground probably would stayed own his heel for forseeable future. (if Square ever did what if stories, that might be a fun spin off FF game to make. I think they should also make a prequel with the war of the magi.)

  • @SuperAmaton
    @SuperAmaton 4 роки тому +3

I know this is nothing new, but Kefka's Core is Nihilism.
Because everything will end and nothing will percist, why create anything?
Why do you read a book, knowing it will end?
Why do you paint your house, when the colour is gonna fade?
Why have Children, when they too are gonna die? Maybe even in your own arms?
This is the part where Kefka's Madness shows. He can't enjoy anything, because it's not eternal.
He'd want to watch more GoT even after it's shitty ending.
He'd want to paint the perfect, everlasting, undamagable Portrait.
He'd want all living being to exist forever.
If anything were eternal, Kefka would devote his existence to it and worship it, love it more than any Zelot could imagine.
But that is impossible. Nothing is eternal.
    And therefore, he loves nothing.
    Nothing created will persist.
But destruction, unless rebuild, will remain.
So, all he does, is destroy.
Set fire to the houses, dry up the rivers, let crops perish, let Existence be GONE!
To himself, he is beyond morality.
But to everyone else, he is perhaps the greatest expression of Evil there can be.
He was not tricked into this, he made no mistakes and he likes it.
In DnD, Devils want to conquer and subjugate everything.
But Demons? All they want, is to destroy.
That is Kefka. A Demon in human Flesh.

Um, when I played the final fantasy games among others I also DM'd AD&D games. I could not create a bad guy as the BBE that was as simple as Kefka as a powerful being because major Abyssal powers existed and could be called or summoned. His chaotic evil trope was already something that was killed on a regular basis by my group, the most powerful being a cult leader trying to summon Abyssal powers or beings. My veteran groups always did things right and stopped the top agents of chaos and evil from letting their kind get more power to the point of wrecking the world.

Why do we not see Kefka early life? My theory, I suspect it because how he feels in the past is how they are now. If anything, they probably had what should have been the most happy childhood and life at all before then. Being a general, holding all that power of both authority and magic, it not unreasonable to assume he has gotten to more or less experience everything. Even acquiring the power they had near the end, despite that, nothing but destruction brings any joy. And if nothing that exists can make them happy, why bother with it all?

I like how there's this grand speech at the end about how deep Kefka's character is....
...Then you read the Ultimania and the devs literally say that his entire motivation is that he is crazy. Just crazy. He's a two dimensional character. His entire character is "I'm evil because I'm crazy."
His official backstory is that he was abandoned at a young age and raised in an orphanage. He had autism (I wish I was making this up) and was abused. Then they tried to turn him into a magitek soldier, but the process wasn't well refined and it damaged his mind.
