You are the first person I've seen who uses the Coats and Clark thread. Makes me feel much better about using it. It's something I can afford. I really enjoy your videos and your great explanations. Thank you
This is the most informative straight line quilting video I’ve seen. Thank you, I always want to see exactly how it was done. You are a great teacher. Also, love, love, love the pattern.
Love quilt. Your walking foot should have quilting bars with it which would allow you key off of your first marked line. I agree that preferences are just that. However, I would observe that 30Wt thread on complex blocks with seam convergences might add unnecessary bulk.
I have been quilting for probably close to 25 years, I appreciate you sharing the marking tool! I have tried many types of markers, chalk, pencils, love this method with no 'ink'. I also love straight line quilting. Great tips.
Just discovered you today. And what a game changer this and the glue basting video are. I am one happy camper indeed. I have more than 150 quilt tops ready for quilting, but felt they would always be just quilt tops because of the high cost of a long arm. I feel very blessed because of the work you have shared. Thank You
I comment this everywhere: DO NOT USE FRIXION PENS!! They are not actually erasable. They are thermo-sensitive. The color/dye of the ink merely turns white when in heat. In cold it comes right back. Ask me how I know. Also, there are a number of videos about these pens.
I've used friction pins with an iron to remove the quilting lines. Off of 2 quilts and the lines were removed with the heat from the iron. And did not return even after washing but I will keep what you said in mind about not using them anyway.

I love the way you explain things. When you show your hands going back-and-forth to show how an even feed foot works was so literal but I think I could be mentally challenged and still understand it. I also like the little giggle you add in once in a while it is very endearing. It takes a rebel to think outside of the box. I really love your glue basting technique.
I have been quilting since the 1990's. I enjoy your channel and your fun way of explaining techniques is refreshing. My go to marking tool for visible lines is a sliver of soap. I keep small pieces of soap in white for most fabrics and green for white fabrics. It is always guaranteed to wash out, never fades away or disappear and does not brush off like chalk. If i may make a suggestion, it might be helpful for newer quilters to mention your stitch length setting as this is a question that is often asked. I personally have the same machine as you and use 2.5 for piecing and 3.0 for quilting.
From one quilt instructor to another…YOU are a fabulous teacher. I am new to your tutorials…and after 35+ years of quilt making, I have learned some technique I have never tried! I look forward to enjoying future tutorials! Do you have a video where you tell your viewers a little bit about yourself?
Oh my goodness! What a HUGE compliment! Thank you SO much! I don’t have a video like that, but maybe I should make one ☺️ thank you for the suggestion! 💖
Hey, watched you run out of bobbin thread and it reminded me: when I get ready to sew, I load up like 7 bobbins, and stack them on the second spool pin on the top of the machine. They are ready to go and don’t have to wind them later!
I really like the Hera marker but my old eyes not so much. Just finished up several lap size quilts for Christmas gifts and did straight line quilting on them. So much faster! I used the Mark b gone so no worries of it coming back… Thanks for another great video
I'm actually piecing a quilt right now that would work really well with this method. Thank you so much for sharing with us! ❤😊 PS. Your fuzzy assistants are ADORABLE.
I’ve not tried that thread for machine quilting, but I will! Want to recommend, though, that when I do English Paper Piecing, I use 40 weight hand quilting thread (Gutermann). It is so much stronger, and also doesn’t seem to get weak or snap.
I would love it if you could show us how to free motion quilt using your Singer patchwork! I have the same machine and have only been able to do straight line/stitch in the ditch. Trued to use the free motion foot that the machine came with and it was a mess! Also tried to use those quilting guide ruler things ..that was a no go because I couldn't put my presser foot down ..HELP. love all your tutorials ❤
I am completely new to sewing and have had no interest in quilting whatsoever. But after watching this video and your video using Elmer’s glue for basting (didn’t even know what basting was before watching that), you’ve made me want to learn to quilt.
Your cute helpurrs need to meow when the bobbin is close to empty. 😺 You did get very skilled help stabilizing the end of the board for the second marking...and keeping it weighted down was a plus! They are so cute! I really like the quilt pattern and the way you quilted it. I enjoy you and your videos so much!
Just found this today! I have a quilt top ready to quilt or TIE- I usually tie quilts. Anyway- it is a blue jean stained glass window quilt, irregular pieces, all squares or rectangles on 2" increments. I do not have Elmer's school glue. I have the backing and the batting. (got to get the glue). btw- Need this for SUNDAY- it's a raffle prize for my family reunion on Sunday. I didn't want to go around EVERY piece (lots are 2" squares), but I thought I'd just sort of randomly go around some of the squares/rectangles. it's various shades of blue jeans with black Kona cotton being the "lead" - which shows 1/2" wide. I think I'm going to quilt black right in the middle of the Kona Cotton "lead" in a random fashion. Wish me luck. :).
I love that quilt!! Am drawing lines on the quilt I just glue-basted per your instructions in the first video of yours I watched. Thank you for all your work!!
I have two Hera markers. One is quite old, my mum in law gave it to me. And, I haven’t used either! I am inspired to try it. And I may try your pattern, too!
Oh my goodness, yay! Thank you so much! I’m hoping to have it out by the end of November! Just waiting for the physical copies to be printed and delivered! 👏🏻
I’ve not been quilting for long but I’m about to quilt my first HUGE quilt. You’ve just saved me!!! Sending my many thanks and appreciation for your fabulous tutorials. ❤️❤️
Very nicely done. As I could tell the quilt and batting never shifted. Great job. This makes me want to do a small square quilt. Hopefully after I finish the 2 I've got to do. 😊

Thank you so much for the tutorial I’ve never done this kind of quilting before. But I’ve always wanted to do it just never knew how I really appreciate this lesson I’m excited about my next quilt because this is the way I’m going to quilt it and now I know how to do it thank you so much❣️🧵✂️🪡💗💕💖💓❤️
The quilting turned out amazing! Such a simple design, but looks much more complex due to the squares and how the lines intersect! Beautiful quilt! Thanks for the very helpful how-to!
I just recently found your channel and have learned so much from watching a few videos. I’m inspired to start quilting again! You do an amazing job teaching!
I'm so happy to have come across your channel. I know nothing about quilting & I'm intimidated about starting a project (starting off small with a wall hanging) Your down-to-earth tutorial has given me motivation that I should just dive right in. No need of studio frills & things. Thank you so very much. You have great teaching skills and your quilts are beautiful.
Just found your channel. Love how you have developed your process. At the beginning of this video, I am interested in the marking tool you are using. I kept hearing "hero" marker LoL 😆 So, that is what I searched... still came right up on top in the results. 😮oh... that says HERA marker. 🤦♀️
When I first started straight line quilting, I used painters tape. I know that struggle all too well 😂 so glad you found this video to help! Thanks for watching! 💖
I’ve a really done a few FMQ tutorials you can find in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLISoQM_sp_XYdgZ7N_Quilting.html Tutorials ua-cam.com/play/PLISoQM_sp_XYdgZ7N_Wv9yy8AILT4ue9b.html And I’m actually going to be releasing a new FMQ tutorial later today! So stay tuned for that! 💖
Hi, Just recently found you. Following your shed progress. I'm jealous. Wondering what stitch length you use for quilting? Love your teaching style. Very thorough and enjoyable.
I believe this quilting is easier because you have a juki TL sewing machine. Which has a higher throat space, then most home sewing machines. I know my juki HZL LB5100 that I have does not have quite the throat space that you have on this machine. And I struggle trying to do even twin size quilts. Because of less throat space on my machine. Than the one you have, but I'm likeing your quilting method used.
I found this very helpful. I purchased my hera marker Elmers Washable School Glue and I intend to try it. My goal is to quilt more and send quilts to a longarm quilter less. Thanks for showing the entire process. I noticed you did not use quilters gloves. Have you ever tried them?
Yay! I'm so glad you found it helpful! It's a lot of fun quilting your own quilts! And yes, I have tried quilters glove, and they do help. I just personally don't like wearing them very often! haha! But they do give your fingers a better grip. It wouldn't hurt to try them out!
Just discovered your channel and I've been binge watching all of them today. Love your perspective and knowledge. Do you school glue your binding and will you be doing a video of the process. Happy stitches to you 😊
Hello! Thank you so much! I actually haven’t tried gluing the binding! I should; and definitely make a video about it! Happy stitches right back at you! 💖
I am straight-line quilting a large lap quilt now, using masking tape. Gonna buy a hera marker, it looks easier! Also, what stitch length do you choose for straight-line quilting?
I used to use painter's tape when I did straight-line quilting and let me tell you! The Hera marker saves SO much time and my lines look way better! haha! I hope you like it! And I use a stitch length of "3". Thanks for watching!
Hi, I’m watching your video on straight line Quilting. My question is would it be easy for a beginner to not use the ruler or the stick and just lineup your stitching from corner to corner of the blocks. Basically free handing free stitching. Thank you for your videos
Just found your video today. Loved the tutorial and found the information very informative. My question is what stitch length do you use for straight line quilting on your domestic sewing machine? I will certainly be looking for more videos as you do them.
What a beautiful quilt! Great tips. I must have missed something. What length is your stitch and what needle are you using? Thank you for your answers.
No, you don't have to stitch in the ditch if you're planning on doing straight line quilting like I show in this video. Good luck on your quilting! You're going to do great!!!
When you started your stitches after your bobbin ran out do you pull the bobbin thread up to the top before continuing? I have a problem with getting a bird’s nest on the back of the quilt whenever I start in the quilt top. Any tips greatly appreciated. You have a very welcoming channel, thanks for your tutorials and your encouragement to as questions.
First off, thank you so much! I’m so glad you’ve found my channel welcome and helpful! That’s the goal! 💖 so to answer your question, you certainly can pull that bobbin thread up, I usually don’t. If I do get that little “birds nest”, I just undo the little nest and trim the excess thread. I hope that helps! Thank you for watching and good luck! 💖
Great tutorial! I also love straight-line quilting, however, when going in the opposite direction (across previous stitching) I sometimes get puckers or the fabric has shifted. Any suggestions how to avoid this? Would love to hear your comments. Thank you.
Hi, Liz! So, I found the best way to avoid those annoying puckers you need to press your quilt top and backing so they lay as flat as possible. Then when basting, making everything again, is perfectly flat. I really like to use glue basting because that holds the layers of quilt together very well. Also, when quilting, make sure you don’t pull or stretch the fabric at all. Your feed dogs should be doing all the work. I also recommend using a walking foot if you are quilting a larger quilt. I hope all this helps! Let me know if you have other questions! 💖
(Lisa Freeman) I’m really enjoying your channel…your a GREAT teacher! Love your quilt! Looking forward to when you release the pattern. Could you give please tell me what line of fabric (jelly roll) this is? I’d like to see if it’s still available. Thanks so much!🧵
Thank you so much, Lisa! I really appreciate that! I used “Flower Pot” by Lella Boutiques for Moda! 💖 it’s a gorgeous line! I’ve made a couple of quilts using it haha
Haven't tried it yet but this scenario just came to mind. If one of your straight lines didn't match up exactly with the center of the white blocks what would you have done? For example, the piecing was a little off and therefore would you have sewn the line a little off so that the line still went down the center of the white block. Otherwise the line would be perfectly straight but the error would be more noticeable
I would probably try to find a happy medium between the two options. I'm of the opinion that you are the only one who is going to notice your mistakes. The person you are gifting the quilt to won't notice if one of the lines is slightly off. I hope that helps!
I was wondering why you don’t just use the quilting guide you can attach to the quilting foot. Is there an advantage to marking as opposed to the guide set to the right amount of space between lines?
Well, I have a few reasons why! First, I don’t have the guide that works with my walking foot 😂 it’s sold separately and I’ve just never ordered it. Second reason: It allows me to see what the lines will look like before stitching, and if I decide I want a different distance between my lines, I can make that change before doing any stitches. And thirdly, I just plain enjoy the process lol
Two comments. First, I love to mark straight lines with a hera. I have found that even though they are made of plastic, the sharp edge of a hera can become a little dull. That makes the crease less precise. So replace a hera as needed. Second, I recently saw a UA-camr mark her quilt top with a hera before she made her quilt sandwich. I have no idea how a single layer of fabric could hold a crease deep enough to see after the quilt sandwich was basted. That might work on flannel because the nap could show the crease, but I would never mark a single layer of regular quilting cotton. Question: Do you quilt only in one direction in order to avoid puckers, or do you switch with every other row or for each half of the quilt?
Oh wow, yeah I wouldn’t think the Hera marker would make a noticeable enough crease on a single layer of fabric…interesting…BUT if it works for them, then okay! 👏🏻 To answer your question, I do all the lines in one direction first, as I showed in the video. I do one half of the quilt, and then the other in one direction. Then do all the lines for the 2nd direction. This is easiest for me. The way I avoid puckers is in the basting phase when I glue baste. I get the fabric as flat as possible to avoid any puckering or pleating. I hope that helps! Thank you for watching! 💖
For straight line quilting, I like to use a stitch length of “3” 💖 you can play around with it and see if you like your stitches a little shorter/ longer, but “3” is a good starting point 🤓
You are the first person I've seen who uses the Coats and Clark thread. Makes me feel much better about using it. It's something I can afford. I really enjoy your videos and your great explanations. Thank you
Yes! I’m all about using affordable but good quality products when I’m quilting! Bonus when you can find it on sale!! Thank you for watching! 💖
I use it to, never tried any other brand. Works fine for me
This is the most informative straight line quilting video I’ve seen. Thank you, I always want to see exactly how it was done. You are a great teacher. Also, love, love, love the pattern.
Wow, thank you so much! 💖💖💖 I'm so glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
Love quilt. Your walking foot should have quilting bars with it which would allow you key off of your first marked line. I agree that preferences are just that. However, I would observe that 30Wt thread on complex blocks with seam convergences might add unnecessary bulk.
Great video! Now to try a small quilt using Elmer's glue. Old time quilter but always ready to try new things.🥰
Yay! Thank you for watching, Linda! 💖
I have been quilting for probably close to 25 years, I appreciate you sharing the marking tool! I have tried many types of markers, chalk, pencils, love this method with no 'ink'. I also love straight line quilting. Great tips.
Thank you so much, Darlene! The Hera Marker is a game changer!
going to have to look for one at my local JoAnn store, next time I get out

Just discovered you today. And what a game changer this and the glue basting video are. I am one happy camper indeed. I have more than 150 quilt tops ready for quilting, but felt they would always be just quilt tops because of the high cost of a long arm. I feel very blessed because of the work you have shared. Thank You
🤯 150 quilt tops?! Wow! You’ve been a busy camper too! That’s fantastic! I’m so glad my videos are helping you! That makes me SO happy! 💖
I comment this everywhere: DO NOT USE FRIXION PENS!! They are not actually erasable. They are thermo-sensitive. The color/dye of the ink merely turns white when in heat. In cold it comes right back. Ask me how I know. Also, there are a number of videos about these pens.
Thank you for the heads up!
Me too- no Frixion😊
I've used friction pins with an iron to remove the quilting lines. Off of 2 quilts and the lines were removed with the heat from the iron. And did not return even after washing but I will keep what you said in mind about not using them anyway.
I believe once washed the ink is gone for good
@@imariser1111 that hasn’t been my experience. And when I used one one on a Smokey blue fabric, the line became white after ironing.
Love your video on glue basting and straight line quilting. You are a natural at teaching! Love your rebellious nature. Looking forward to see all of your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience and skills.
Thank you so much!!! 💖🤗
Aww thank you so much! I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful and you love glue basting! It's a total game changer! I really enjoying teaching :)
I bought a Hera marker because you mentioned it in an earlier video. I love it! Thanks for sharing!
Yay!!! It’s a handy little tool! Thank you for watching! 💖
You are a very good teacher. Thank you. New quilter, old teacher.
Thank you so much 💖
Love using the corner rod as a 'ruler'!! I have 3 helpers (cats) btw...never a dull moment for me with my quilt on the floor!! ha ha

Ooo yeah panels can be tricky! I should do a video on some past quilts I’ve made with them. Thank you for the suggestion! 💖
Aww thank you SO much! And yes! You can do it! The best way to learn is to do the thing! You’ve got this! 💖👏🏻
@@StitchObsessed 🥰 thx for the encouragement. U da best!
Thank you very much for sharing. And cats and quilts, are a natural attraction. I have two as my Quality Control assistants🤣🤣
Haha yes! They are the perfect combo! Thank you for watching 💖
Just found your channel. Love how you have developed your process. At the beginning of this video, I am interested in the marking tool you are using. I kept hearing "hero" marker LoL 😆
So, that is what I searched... still came right up on top in the results. 😮oh... that says HERA marker. 🤦♀️
HA! Yes, it's the "Hera" marker! It works so well to mark lines for quilting, it's all I use now! Thanks so much for watching!
I can't believe i came across your video. I was using painters wto do my quilting. Your way is so much better!!!!
Thanks 😊😊😊
When I first started straight line quilting, I used painters tape. I know that struggle all too well 😂 so glad you found this video to help! Thanks for watching! 💖
Really pretty pattern!
Thank you! 😊
I've learned to wind many bobbins, so they're ready when I'm doing a big project.
Yes, that is an excellent idea! Unfortunately, I don’t think that far ahead most days 😂
Would you please do a video on free motion quilting
I’ve a really done a few FMQ tutorials you can find in this playlist:

And I’m actually going to be releasing a new FMQ tutorial later today! So stay tuned for that! 💖
Hi, Just recently found you. Following your shed progress. I'm jealous. Wondering what stitch length you use for quilting? Love your teaching style. Very thorough and enjoyable.
Thank you so much for watching! I use stitch length of “3” when doing straightline quilting 💖
Great video ! I encourage you to try quilting gloves ... they are a game changer for me when quilting and machine sewing my binding
Thank you! I’ve tried gloves before. I personally don’t like wearing them, though they can help with FMQ. 💖
I believe this quilting is easier because you have a juki TL sewing machine. Which has a higher throat space, then most home sewing machines. I know my
juki HZL LB5100 that I have does not have quite the throat space that you have on this machine. And I struggle trying to do even twin size quilts. Because of less throat space on my machine. Than the one you have, but I'm likeing your quilting method used.
It may take a little practice, but I feel confident you can do just as good a job with your machine! You can do it!!!
Hey sewing friend..I really enjoy your videos. I was wondering how you put your quilt sandwich together..I didn't see any pins. Thanks so much!
Hi, Gail! Here's a video where I show how I use Elmer's School Glue to baste my quilts! No pins!! ua-cam.com/video/9BrbztHwh-A/v-deo.html
Just came across you today you are so understandable thank you
cable
Thank you so much 💖
I found this very helpful.
This is beautiful!! I’m excited for the pattern ♥️. Question- do you have a tutorial on how you sandwich your quilt layers prior to quilting?
Thank you so much! And yes I do! You can check out my glue basting video here:
ua-cam.com/video/9BrbztHwh-A/v-deo.html
I am straight-line quilting a large lap quilt now, using masking tape. Gonna buy a hera marker, it looks easier! Also, what stitch length do you choose for straight-line quilting?
I used to use painter's tape when I did straight-line quilting and let me tell you! The Hera marker saves SO much time and my lines look way better! haha! I hope you like it! And I use a stitch length of "3". Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial. That is a big quilt for quilting on a domestic machine. I am interested in finding out how you do that.
Hi, I’m watching your video on straight line Quilting. My question is would it be easy for a beginner to not use the ruler or the stick and just lineup your stitching from corner to corner of the blocks. Basically free handing free stitching. Thank you for your videos
Oh yeah, you definitely could do that! Just take it slow at first so the stitches don't "get away from you." 💖
Just found your video today. Loved the tutorial and found the information very informative. My question is what stitch length do you use for straight line quilting on your domestic sewing machine? I will certainly be looking for more videos as you do them.
Hello and thank you so much for watching! I always use a stitch length of “3” for straight line quilting. 👍🏻💖
What kind of batting are you using? Love this video. I have the same machine.
Thank you for watching! I use Pellon 100% cotton batting. It’s my favorite, and I can buy it on a roll! 💖
I'm so excited to glue baste and straight line quilt my project! Would you please tell me what stitch length you use for this quilting?
I always have my stitch length set at “3” for straight line quilting 🤓
What a beautiful quilt! Great tips. I must have missed something. What length is your stitch and what needle are you using? Thank you for your answers.
Thank you for watching! So I use a stitch length of “3” for straight line quilting and I just use a universal 14/90 needle. Easy peasy! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Miriam!
@@barbara-qg3kv no problem! 💖
Thanks!
Thank YOU, Wendy! I so appreciate this! 💖
I am starting my first quilting this weekend. One question: Do you ‘stitch in the ditch’ the blocks first?
No, you don't have to stitch in the ditch if you're planning on doing straight line quilting like I show in this video. Good luck on your quilting! You're going to do great!!!
@@StitchObsessed thank you!
Nice job, thanks for sharing. Do you ever use the walking foot guide bar? Thanks for sharing.
I haven’t, but I know many quilters do and that seems to work well. Thank you for watching!
Your quilt is beautiful!!! Question: what stitch length do you set your sewing machine at when doing straight line machine quilting?
Thank you! I always use a stitch length of "3" for Straight Line Quilting. :)
Whe you sew the second line do you sew in opposite direction to avoid ripples
Since I used glue basting, I don’t really worry about any rippling or puckers. But if you want to do that, you certainly can! 👏🏻
Great video and I love when the cats show up to help. What kind of machine do you have?
They are pretty cute, aren't they? hehe I use a Juki TL-2010Q, and I love it!
@@StitchObsessedThank you! Love that machine and hope to get one myself.
@@deborahlh7747 it’s fantastic!
I might have missed it but what stitch length do you use when you do straight line quilting?
I like to use a stitch length “3” for my straight line quilting 🤓
It turned out beautiful ❤️ if you said it I missed it, but what batting do you use? Great video. Thank you
Thank you so much! I always use Pellon 100% cotton batting. It's my favorite!
@@StitchObsessed thank you. It looked so cozy!
@@BAMom780 it is!! This quilting definitely helped with the cozy factor 😍
@@StitchObsessed Yeah those are good reasons. I just might have to try it.😎
@@livinthedream4479 its fun! 🤩
To answer your question, I do all the lines in one direction first, as I showed in the video.
I'm wondering the same thing someone else said, where's the bar that comes with the walking foot to set off a distance?
My walking foot didn’t come with one! 😂🥴
I found it interesting that you didn't pin your quilt sandwich. Did you spray baste and if so, what did you use?
Good eye! I actually glue baste using Elmer’s school glue! It’s non toxic, cheap, and works great!
What stich length do you recommend for quilting?
For straight line quilting, I like to use a stitch length of “3” 💖 you can play around with it and see if you like your stitches a little shorter/ longer, but “3” is a good starting point 🤓
Great tutorial. I may have missed it; but curious what stitch length do you use for straight line quilting.
I goofed and forgot to mention that! 🤦🏼♀️ I always do straight line quilting with a stitch length of “3”! Thanks for asking and watching! 💖
@@StitchObsessed what a quick response!! Thanks so much! I had your video on while I was cooking and now we can eat!! 🥰
