      Falcon Heavy is supposed to be launched for the first time in December this year. If everything goes according to plan, we will see 2 boosters land simultaneously follow by a 3rd booster landing a few minutes later. If it does not go according to plan... at least there will be some pretty big fireworks.

Sending things to space is nothing new, we doing this for few decades now and it so common that news outlets dont care even before spacex. Sending men by spacex probably wont make big news either for same reason, spacex walking already well made road here. Sending man beyound near earth orbit would do better news because no one did that for long time.

      Alex Siemers i think people overglorifies SpaceX, only significent thing about them is fact that they are first private company to do actual space bussness which would eventully happen and lending a rocket on earth which has yet long way to proof its economical premise, but everything else is already done a lot of times and even more. People act like no body else send things to space before and i reallt hate when people bash NASA along the way, while not only they have a lot more things on there head aside of building rockets, they actully clients of SpaceX not to mention there space administration roles.

    As always, interesting coverage of a SpaceX launch.
    Try and put a time delay on the camera on the drone-ship, and make too feeds, one direct and one with time delay. Broadcast the time delayed video captured on the drone-ship, when signal contact has been archived again.
    I think that it would be possible this way to watch the entire landing about 1 or 2 minutes after loss of signal. That would be an interesting addition to the web cast. Thanks for all your enthusiasm, and have a fire of celebration.;)

    The descent and landing blows my mind everytime. Watching the telemetry and the video while at the same time trying to grasp the physics involved is mind boggling...not to mention the pitching and rolling landing 'pad'. A 3D graphic showing orientation and direction relative to landing site would be really awesome. One big gripe...a day after this incredible feat we still don't have video of the landing. And even when we do, video of barge landings is relatively crap...how about a couple of drones and posting the video at the first opportunity? Please and thank you.

    Can we get some better footage of these launches? Don't get me wrong they're amazing as is, but some major blockbuster level stuff would make these appear as epic as they really are to the masses - close up fly by drone shots of the launches and then dramatic moving camera shots for the landings? Surely this wouldn't be that hard to do - surely it could be automated.
    Well done on another beautiful landing of an orbit class booster =)

  • @AbeDillon
    @AbeDillon 7 років тому +29

    SpaceX, correct me if I'm wrong; but you keep loosing visual of the drone-ship right when stage-1 lands because the drone-ship is feeding data back to you over a satellite connection and the violent vibrations from landing cause the satellite feed to misalign and drop out, right? Isn't this a pretty simple fix? Off the top of my head, it seems like you could simply deploy a flying drone and relay the signal through that.
    I'm sure some mechanical engineer will tell me about much simpler methods to isolate vibrations from a tracking system, but come on! FIX IT! I want to see that beautiful footage!
    EDIT: Or... you know... keep kicking ass at solving the much cooler and more important problem of making humans an interplanetary species.

    • @mistertagnan
      @mistertagnan 7 років тому +6

      Abe Dillon
      1: they are a rocket company, not McDonalds advertising department.
      2: so you want to attach a satellite TV dish, to a highly unstable drone that is either too small, too expensive, or crashes into the ocean because of a fucking sonic boom.

    • @AbeDillon
      @AbeDillon 7 років тому +7

      MrTagnan
      Those videos are inspiring and, yes; amazing advertising. A drone large enough to carry a satellite dish would be inherently very stable because it would have a lot of inertia. It would also cost, what, $50k tops? That's an unbelievably good deal for an advertising budget, no? The thing would pay for itself instantly.
      The first stage of the Falcon 9 is sub-sonic way before it reaches the drone ships and sonic booms don't knock vehicles out of the sky, that makes no sense. A sonic boom is a loud noise, not hurricane-force wind gust.
      Again, there are probably other solutions to the problem. They could have a second drone-ship a good distance away act as a relay, though that seems like it would be more costly than a flying drone.
      At any rate; it seems like a pretty easy and valuable fix. You don't have to be McDonald's to care about advertising. SpaceX might very well want to say, "What's that, Blue Origins? We couldn't hear you over the sound of our monthly* compilations of sticking every single landing like it was nothing!".
      *They do plan to make space so accessible and their turn-around time so fast that they'll be launching almost daily in the near future.

    • @mistertagnan
      @mistertagnan 7 років тому

      Abe Dillon here's the thing, yes S1 is sub sonic, but at a safe distance the drone would be knocked out of the air by the sonic booms, I've been to the KSC at landing and in most videos you can see the camera get shaken. They have limit people and they need to focus on R&D for ROCKETS not downlinks, a large enough drone would still be very unstable because the Atlantic is windy. Yes I would love to see landings better on OCISLY but it would take away from the money and research of developing BFR and FH.

    • @AmbientMorality
      @AmbientMorality 7 років тому

      Yep, no way would a drone like that be a worthwhile investment. Everyone in the launch industry knows about them, they have very strong brand presence. Few in the launch industry care much for Blue at this point, though that is changing as they tool up for New Glenn.

      Can't do a relay barge. It's already big money to tow the ASDS out there alone and get it set up. Having to do it all twice just to get five seconds of footage we already get on RTLS flights? No that's just not practical. The drone is the best thing, but I don't think a drone can carry a powerful enough transmitter to relay the signal straight to a satellite. It'd have to relay to the high gain on the barge which would just get broken up as well.

    I wish I could watch this (or most other webcasts) live but I have school... If possible, could you guys please try launching in the evening? I'm not trying to sound pushy or anything but I'd love to see your webcasts. Thanks and good luck on the Mars missions! I hope to work for you guys someday!

    That intro is sick and the music too. Launch was ok. Jk, It was amazing. That fire pattern the rocket makes, Is there a name for that? The way the fire looks like a star and streams out into a ring and then finishing in a blue tornado. Bodacious

      That would be called "engine plume" :)

      The distinctive pattern the F9 makes is super cool. After watching a few, you can tell when MECO is about to happen by the amount of "wrong pressure" there is. I can't remember what it's called, but the engine bell on the Stage 1 Merlins is made to be most efficient at a mid altitude. that's why after max Q it starts to expand out. not enough atmosphere pressure to keep the plume "in line." :-D

    And the hits just keep coming!
    First stage got "a little toasty" there.
    Is there a damage estimate?
    Incredible that it was able to land, considering the rocking of the droneship, which was considerable.
    No small amount of luck there.
    Wondering if SpaceX has been considering a larger, perhaps crewed freighter-size ship, for landing, since
    they have a number of landings under their belt now?

    Presumably the second stage will now destructively re-enter. Does it do that passively, or will it need to perform manoeuvres to lower its perigee and control the angle of entry?

    What is going with the camera on drone platform? Almost every time Space's rocket is landing on it, it stops and we have gap in transmission. I assume this camera does it on purpose.... Nevertheless great work SpaceX ! You are creating the future :)

    • @alexsiemers7898
      @alexsiemers7898 7 років тому +1

      It's not the camera, it's the transmission equipment being vibrated like hell with the rocket so close by.

    • @raidarkblade377
      @raidarkblade377 7 років тому +1

      The ship is pretty far out to sea, and cause of safety regulations nothing else is allowed near it, so it's using a satellite up-link to send the footage. With the vibrations from the rocket shaking the boat, it's very hard for it to maintain the connection with the satellite.

    Can they get a better camera or connection system for the drone ship. They always lose the signal when the first stage is going to land on the drone ship. That's what people wants to see the most. It is the most impressive thing in the video !!!

    the sky was so clear that you could see the video file formatting's limited number of shades of blue incrementally re-shading the screen as the camera followed the rocket into darker skies.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 7 років тому

      The rocket itself probably interferes with the radio transmission to the satellite also. When it gets near, suddenly there's a big cylinder of metal in the sky between the transmitter and receiver.
