Cory, great to hear.:) Just remember, as I always say, "30 degrees, a light touch, let the razor do all the work, gentlemen." Make sure to do the proper prep. Get a good lather and again, use a light touch. give your skin a few weeks to month to adapt to the process, based on what your previous shaving routine was. Mine was an electric razor, so it took some time for my skin to balance out. It really drank in all that great skin food from those top -shelf soaps, creams, and balms.:) Tabac was a good choice.:) In fact, for me, it was a game-changer.:)

Thank you for the great review of the Chieftain. This is why I fell in love with my Vikings Blades Godfather. I just bought a Vulcan, and the next time I shave, it will be its maiden voyage. It's the best razor, IMO. Throw a Bic, Kai, or Feather blade in them to make them more aggressive. Vikings Blade has a great quality control Dept., and use my new Simpson Trafalgar T3 for it's first use. I actually look forward to shaving. Cheers!

Thanks Mark for the great reviews. Your enthusiasm is great to see. After trying to find reviews on Vikings blade razors, I found that there are not many people reviewing this brand. This week I bought a vikings blade chieftain BC. I am using astra platinum blades in it. The quality in this brand is very nice. I’m surprised more people aren’t reviewing this on UA-cam. I am a beginner to DE shaving. I was a little hesitant to try this combo. I originally bought the chieftain jr since it was less aggressive. I thought it would be good for a beginner. I’m sure it has its place but it did not work well for me. I have a course beard and was not getting a good shave even with two or three passes. After upgrading to the chieftain BC, I am much more satisfied. I’m glad I made this purchase because I was almost about to give up on double edge razor shaver. The blades made a big difference as well. I was using a cheaper blade in the chieftain Jr.

Thanks, Mike S.:) Really appreciate the kind words. The Vikings Blade Chieftain is the razor that brought me back to the traditional wet shave. So, I have a soft spot for the brand. However it's not difficult to feel this way as their razors are top shelf in every sense of the word. The 5 BC is an awesome razor! enjoy!:)

@@MarkSzorady Hey Mark! Since I never responded back to this(sorry), I thought I'd give an update since I have had this for a while now... This Chieftain 5BC is a very good razor! Built with quality, feels great in the hand and is very smooth and efficient. Mine is around 6 months old and looks brand new, there is no fading of the finish and nothing loose or broken. I have found that I get my best shaves using this with sharper end blades. Examples based off experience are Gillette Perma-Sharp, Voskhod and GSB. Rapira Plat Lux are also a good Blade for this if you want a smooth no fuss socially acceptable quick shave. But honestly you could use any blade you want with this and come away with a great shave because it is a medium range razor as far as "aggression" goes. This razor is easy to clean after use too. As far as looks go, this is still my favorite looking razor that I own. This is a razor that I think every wet shaver should have in their inventory. I most definitely recommend it to all shavers both new and veterans!

Hi, i am currently using Gillette fusion and want to start with a wet save .
i considering the godfather Stonehenge, the emperor or the cheiftain 5bc.
    What are your thoughts ?
    Thanks

Hi, yechiel hickry. The Emperor is adjustable and will allow you to dial in and find the correct shave aggression. Lots of heft.:) The 5 BC and Stonehenge are both great. Stonehenge is milder, 5BC is smooth but a bit more aggressive. Just depends on the handle style you want and whether you want TTO or 3-piece. Want a consistently good mild shave? Go with the Stonehenge.

Hi Mark, I looked at your Godfather Stonehenge review a few days ago and ordered it from Amazon along with Viking Blades razor / brush stand and the white brush. Can’t wait until it gets here. Now I am seeing this Chieftain 5 BC and I want to get this as well. Is the shave as mild as The Godfather Stonehenge or more aggressive? You have really turned me on to the Viking Blades brand! Thanks, Glenn

    • @MarkSzorady

Thank you very much, Glenn! The 5 BC is a neutral razor which is actually a bit more aggressive and efficient than the Godfather Stonehenge. However, it offers a very smooth shave. On a scale of 1 to 9, I'd guess the 5 BC, like the original Chieftain, would be at about a 5. It's right in the middle. I call the Chieftain razors the "Goldilocks" razor...not too mild, not too aggressive, it's just right!:) I find that the 5 BC is a bit smother than the original.:) And, I love the original Chieftain!:)
Be aware that the 5 BC dos not enclose the end tabs of the blade as you'l find on the Stonehenge and the original Chieftain. Not a deal-breaker at all.:)
This morning, and as I mentioned in the most recent Monday Morning mailbag (03/09/2020), I popped a Feather blade into the Stonehenge and got an amazingly smooth three-pass BBS shave.:) I think the Godfather is the only razor I've used with Feather blade.:) Wet shavers consider Feather blades to be one of the sharpest. Putting one in the Stonehenge certainly upped the efficiency while still offering an irritation free shave.:)

Glenn, just to follow up, I used my Vikings Blade Chieftain 5 BC razor this morning with an Astra blade and Tabac shave soap. I got an incredible three-pass BBS shave this morning!:) This Chieftain razor is the smoothest of the smooth! I never thought a razor could top the original Chieftain, but this may be it.:) No nicks, no cuts, no irritation. Just a really nice, smooth close shave. It's a bit heavier than the original and the end tabs of the blade are not enclosed. This lends for some more maneuverability. But still, the end tabs do not protrude so much that they get in the way. Love the heft of the razor and the knurling of the handle. The look, heft, feel...just wonderful.:)

She Shaves with Jill FYI I don’t keep them in a jar lol. Only the first time I buy I leave them in there for 10min like the instructions say on the barbicide can. Hi, I like that razor at the first look itself. It's weight is in the range I like among the razors in my little collection namely KIng C. Gillette, Feather ASD-2 and Pearl SS 01, so leaning towards it.
All of these razors have relatively long handle that I like ( in the range of 9.5 to 10 cm - only handle). What is the length of the handle of Chieftain 5 BC? I couldn't stand the short handle and relative lightness of Merkur 34c that I regret buying it.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  3 роки тому

The info page on vikingsblade.com says:
      Super heavy weight (101g / 3.55oz) + short handle (9.5cm / 3.74in)
      vikingsblade.com/products/the-chieftain-5-bc-safety-razor
The handle looks to be about 3.5 inches or a little less.

@@MarkSzorady yes, I read it. Since you have that razor thought if you measured it. If it's like 9.5cm it's in my liking.
Quite a few of these guys sometimes refer to overall length. Some show handle length clearly. In this case, 3.74" / 9.5cm is not a short handle but Vikings call it so. A real short handle I think is Merkur 34c.
I measure out the dimensions and weight myself , the first thing to do when I get a razor and keep record in a spreadsheet 😀. And dimensions measured with a vernier😉.

I just bought my first safety razor (Vikings 5BC). Do I need anything else besides shaving cream and after shave? There are a lot of products like brushes and bowls and soaps. I am 21 but don’t have much facial hair growth. I am looking to keep my skin clean and healthy.

    • @MarkSzorady

Get a razor blade sampler so you can try a variety of blades.
      amzn.to/2TmxHPy
Get a nice, but affordable, shaving brush. A good synthetic will do to start out. A natural boar brush is a good choice and affordable, as well. But the boar brush will need to be broken in over a period of a few weeks.
Semogue 1800 Superior Boar Bristle Shaving Brush: amzn.to/2FNCSQA
      Or
RazoRock BRUCE Plissoft Synthetic Shaving Brush - 24mm: amzn.to/2tdsEpW
Shaving brushes can get crazy expensive. So I've recommended these above two due to affordable price to performance. Once you get into the traditional wet shaving routine, then move up to a better shaving brush (Vikings Blade Fire Mare is a favorite: amzn.to/2Nkkcfu)
A good pre-shave oil will help.
I like Vikings Blade: VIKINGS BLADE Pre Shave Oil, The Gentlemint (Watermint & Spearmint)
      Proraso makes a good pre-shave cream: amzn.to/2NnUYgu
Try an alum block for post shave. It'll help to knock down irritation and give you feedback to see if you pressed too hard (remember, use a light touch).
      Osma alum block: amzn.to/30itvSj
Go with an after shave balm to calm your skin. Work you way up to an after shave splash (most splashes contain alcohol). You need ot give your face a nd skin some time to adpat to the process. Alcohoil may dry out your skin. so, in the beginning, stick with an alcohol free balm. lot sof choices out there. also, be aware that the alum block might be a bit drying, too. so, wet it under cold water, apply, wait 30 seconds, then rinse. THEN, apply a balm.:)
As time goes by, you can vary this a bit. I leave the alum on, then go with an after shave splash, a balm on the top of my head and carry a bit down around the face.
There's no hard and fast rule about the number of passes. 21 and not much hair growth? Then, if your shave is finished after one pass, then so be it. If you need a second pass, then, that's okay too.:)
Also, get a styptic pencil: amzn.to/36SBnMO
This will definitely close up any nick or cut. Concentrate on good technique. if you slip up (and we all have and sometimes still do once in a blue moon) the styptic pencil will come to the rescue. It's gonna sting and leave a bit of white residue.
Lastly, a few things to remember:
1.) Proper prep: Get a good shave soap or cream and build a good lather.
2.) Do not shave over an area that is unprotected. Make sure it has lather on it before passing a blade across.
3.) Take your time, use short strokes.
4.) And, "30 degrees, a light touch, let the razor do all the work, gentlemen.":)
      HTH.:)

Mark Szorady wow. Thank you so so much for all this information. I am very happy you took the time out to help me and I really appreciate the tips.
For a little more information (if it helps), I get mainly growth above my lip and on my chin with a small small amount of side burns, this over the course of a few days. However it is noticeable if I don’t shave one day. I guess it’s a shadow, then stubble, then longer hairs but never a traditional mustache. So I shave once a day in the morning after a shower.
As of right now I already have canned shaving gel. I am assuming this is not as good as something like the “Proraso Shaving Soap In A Bowl” or the “Proraso Shaving Cream”. Is that correct?
I already bought “Vikings Mild and Safe razors” to go with my razor. Do you still recommend I get a pack of samples? Or should this pack of razors I bought be sufficient?
Finally, I already have “Proraso After Shave Balm”. I hope this is a good balm.
      Thanks again 😃

@@iiiiii2828 Absolutely get rid of the canned shaving gel. Well, set it aside. You can always use it in a pinch for travel purposes, but you really want to use a good shaving soap or cream and actually use a shaving brush to whip up the lather.
      My favorite soaps are:
Tabac. Great protection, classic scent, and whips up easily. Wow! Love this stuff!
Proraso (green). Another terrific soap. Great menthol and eucalyptus kick. Again, lathers easily.
Soap Commander. I've used the Courage and Honor soaps and they are wonderful!

Proraso is an excellent after shave balm. Perfect for anyone, but great for someone just starting out with the traditional wet shave.:)
