    It's all about the feeling. The perception of luxury and the signal to others that you can afford it. I think it achieved that image because it's a beautiful and now iconic design. I bought my first (I have 4 Montblanc pens of various styles, including the 149) Montblanc when I started out in business in my late 20's and had achieved a lot of success. It was a symbol to me that I had "made it" ... and a reminder to keep working hard.

      Thanks for the comment. It is similar to how some or even many people view Rolex; as symbols of success along the way. All the best.

    Unbelievably, this was my very first fountain pen. I bought it 30 years ago, before I knew anything about fountain pens. I’m glad I bought it back then, because I couldn’t afford it today!

      That is a great choice for a first pen and you got it at a good time. I got mine 8 years ago and it was much less then. All the best!

      Just got my first fountain pen and it was also quite a jump in price from before. This beauty is a Lamy 2000 in EF that I managed to score for about $125 after fees and taxes, brand new and delivered 🙂

      My 149 was my second fountain pen, I purchased it in 1984. Before that I used my 1965 Parker 45. Still have and use both.

    I have 3 Mont Blanca : 2 149s and 1 146.
    I had the nibmeister Mark Bacas in Cumming Georgia work on each of them and he sure is a professional.
    Your channel is wonderful.
    Thank you so much.
    Keep up the great presentations and discussions.

    Most informative, admirably neutral, and entertaining... I, too, love my 149... was on the fence for a while prior to making its purchase... but if I was to do it... I wanted that 1000 dollar experience, as anything else was just not right. Thusly, I gifted myself with it, last year, brand new... and have been eternally grateful for doing so. It is a jewel in my collection, and nothing else garners the sense of intrinsic fulfillment as my 149. I own Sailors (even the KOP) as well a Pilot 823, in Smoke. But nothing is quite like the extra fine oversized 18kt 149 nib.

      Thank you both for the video and the comment! I recently purchased the 149 for my birthday as a self-gift that I was on the edge about for a while, and both the video and the comment pushed me over. I am incredibly happy with the pen, as it's a joy to write with. It makes me smile every time I use it, so thank you both!

    I use a MB 149 pen actually 4 MB 149 pens as my daily writers. I have been using MB 149 pens since 1998 or so. Despite being a smallish guy, the large size does not faze me, I use a very light grip, and use very little pressure to write with. Thus, writing with the MB 149s makes the process of writing very enjoyable. As far as buying a MB 149, the best place is to check out the used market. All of my 4 MB 149s were bought used, but is almost new condition, and cost between $350.00 (US $) and $450.00 as opposed to buying a brand new pen that costs over $950.00

    My first fountain pen was an old Parker 61 that used to be my grandfathers (50s-60s vintage). That was in 1991 as a sophomore in college. I got the pen with a bottle of black ink and I liked the idea of not having to buy a pen again given I was a desperately poor student. That pen was a daily user and got me thru both undergrad and graduate school. I knew nothing about fountain pens when I got that Parker 61 and I would never have predicted I’d still be using them today as daily users. I had built up quite a collection of FP in those years then started to gift them away - trying to simplify my life some and spread the joy. That brings me to Montblanc. With the exception of that old Parker 61 and two Shaeffer snorkels, my collection is reduced to those plus my 2-149’s and 2-146’s. The MBs range from mid-1980’s to mid-2000’s and are my daily users. 4 MB’s with 4 different color inks. Treat them right and they will last a lifetime always reliably putting ink on paper. I can’t remember the last time I actually bought a disposable pen. Thx for the review!

    I own a 146 and it’s perfect for my hand. I can’t imagine a better feeling pen than that!
    The 149 is too big for me and even if it was more comfortable to write with, it would feel a little too flashy for the workplace.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  Місяць тому +2

      I suppose it depends on the workplace and one’s relationship with it. I think I vacillate a bit between the 149 and the 146. I agree with you that the 146 is near perfect. It is my Goldilocks Pen. Yet, sometimes nothing will do quite like the 149 does! So there is that to consider. Thanks for watching.

    Great review and really valid insight into the enjoyment of the writing experience the 149 brings that make it worth it's admission. I have the 149 Red Gold F and 149 Calligraphy and love them both. I agree about the enjoyment of the pen which adds to it's value because I write more with it, I use it every day at work making detailed notes that saved my skin many times, and journal at home. Whether purchased new or pre-owned, these are worth every penny.

    Really enjoyed this review, Hemingway! I have tried the 149 but it really was too big for my hand. I have a 146 which, unfortunately, does not have a two toned nib but is still a fantastic writer, and a Mont Blanc, Chopin which has a beautiful two-toned Cursive Italic nib -- absolutely my favorite pen! I just came across your channel a couple of weeks ago and subscribed. Thoroughly enjoying it and working my way through every archived video you've put up. I don't know if you've done a review of the Mont Blanc 146, but it would probably be very similar to the 149 just a smaller version. Thanks for this awesome channel. I Look forward to every Thursday now!

    I remember seeing ads in the New Yorker--circa 1969--for the "Magnificent Diplomat." It was definitely the MB 149 of the time, retailing at $39. I was a young grad student, and my fountain pen of choice was a Sheaffer Imperial, retailing at $7.50, the limit of my pen budget. I finally got a 149 for a present in 1987, which I have to this day. It's currently inked with Diamine blue-black, and I use it daily. Wonderful pen. Thanks to your enthusiasm, I recently acquired a MB Egyptomania. Definitely different from the 149, but a wonderful writer. Thanks for the review.

    Hello Hemingway, this is one of the best videos on an individual pen I've ever listened to. Now talking about colour, black and gold may be trite by now but it will never stop being classy. I do not yet own one but flirt with the model on account of its fabulous nib. I do not mind the size as I have a pianist's hand and deep down would love it in burgundy. Montblanc does exceptionally beautiful burgundy pens, just have a look at the Petit Prince series and this becomes instantly noticeable.

    This pen is iconic and loaded with history. The design is simplistic, yet recognizable by many. It is also a pen that has eluded my pocession. One day, perhaps I will own one of these pens but until that time, I will continue to cherish my Pelican collection.

    Thank you for what was an excellent overview of this pen. I've never owned one, but may now consider one. I've always been put off by the size, as opposed to the price tag. I like and use other Montblanc pens (new and vintage), my favourites being the Noblesse (about as different to this as possible!), the 144, the 256 and the 22.

    Very well presented and articulately narrated video! I have also thoroughly enjoyed your video on the rationale/or the lack thereof for collecting fountain pens. I have a number of vintage and modern fountain pens, and had recently purchased a Montblanc 22 (CIRCA 1961) fountain pen. These are far less expensive options to initiate oneself with the snowflake of Montblanc pens, but I am sure that for the ultimate experience one must use the Meisterstück 149. My 22 nevertheless writes very well, and is a smooth writer. The workmanship of these German pens, and some of the vintage Sheaffer's and Parker pens can be very addictive. If you happen to own a Sheaffer's Snorkel pen or any other vintage pens it would be great to have a video from you on one of them. I am located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and here we have quite a few fountain pen aficionados. One of the nice things about You Tube is that you win over fans and followers all over the world. Wishing you success with this channel. Warm greetings from Dhaka!

      Hello Shamim! I am very pleased to meet you and thank you for the kind note. I have heard that fountain pens are still very popular in India. That is wonderful. I will be doing reviews of vintage pens, including the Montblanc 22. I have one as well and I adore it. it is a great writer. I have always thought that it is similar to a Parker 51 in its nib. Great pen and I will do something on it soon. I have a 246 and a 152 too. Expect some more vintage content. Vacumatics, Stewart Conway, Duofold. We’ll do a lot of interesting things. All the best and keep in touch.

    Great review. Have watched many 149 reviews, and I think this must rate as one of the best. Personally I have 4 149s with different nibs. Two of them were pre owned. The oldest one which I got used, is from the mid 60s, absolutely amazing nib. I had to do some restoration work I.e. really good cleaning and a good polish. Looks almost new. BTW, relating to the "precious resin" debate, I read a blog some time ago, that the term is actually a translation from a German term for good quality resin, unfortunately it comes across pretentious....
    I did a google translate on the Precious Resin to German. The term can also be translates as Fine Resin, or Noble Resin

    They are great writing pens, constructed well and look great - Worth the money? Considering every one I own has gone up in value - sometimes 2.5x - I would say they hold and often increase in value, so while initially expensive, they are money in the bank if you keep them in good shape. Can’t do that with many other pens - if any.

    Hi, I was signposted to your channel by WaskiSquirrel. I enjoyed your review of the Montblanc 149 fountain pen. There are some things in life that are not what you would call 'value for money' or 'bang for the buck'. However, this does not make them less desirable. The 149 is a pen that is always on my wish list. Earlier this year I had a bad experience with Montblanc. I was given a brand new Montblanc pen as a gift, not a 149, but the nib was defective. Constant hard starts and skipping with any ink or paper. It was returned for a full refund. Despite this, I am not completely turned off the brand. Your idea of a lightly used example could well suit me in the future.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  3 роки тому

      Hello and thank you for the comment. I like what you said about “value for money.” There are some things that you simply must have. I wonder about the current MB line up. Mine is now 10 years old and all of my others are even older. I hope that the quality is still there. If I were to buy another, I would go used. I buy a lot of vintage pens now. -Thanks for dropping by and say hello again sometime.

    :one your channel. I have a MB 149 but want to change the nib to an EF. I can't find any place to send it to for a swap out. I am way beyond their 6 month free nib swap out deal. My problem is where to get it done. MB does not make it obvious on their site. The next issues is: can they be swapped out?

      I believe they can. Will they do it for a fee? You could Inquire. Otherwise check with the nibsmiths. Get a pro’s opinion. Let me know what happens and thanks!

    I may have posted earlier that one of my first pens was the Montblanc 149 (at the time I got mine in 1992, it was a 14K nib; metal piston fixture); however, it was a gift from an alumnus for whom I had done some free legal work. (I am not a licensed attorney in California where I served as a professor; hence, I could not ethically charge for any legal work.) I was naive about the pen’s value, so I took it with me on a tour of Spain (a trip with over 20 students). I had the pen clipped to my shirt. An Italian-born student cam up and said, “Professor, yo cannot display that pen in tourist areas here. Someone might harm you to get that pen!” I responded, “You mean this is that expensive?” Of course, its price in 1992 was significantly less, but it was far more money than I had spent on anything other than a Montblanc ballpoint. As an aside, I did carry the pen in my favorite suit, clipped in the inside coat pocket. Normal body movements throughout the work day cause the cap to come unscrewed. By the time I discovered that the pen was cap-less in my suit jacket, I had done irreparable damage to the suit (despite two different dry cleaners trying to remove the Montblanc ink! After turning pen fanatic shortly after 2010, I have discovered other pens that I think write even better, but I know it is still the most acceptable fountain pen in an upscale business setting. I do not rail against it, I just prefer to write with a few other pens. Again, I am enjoying your reviews and your point of view. Best wishes in building your channel!

      That is a great story. Awful that the cap came undone. Fortunately that hasn’t happened yet. I have had issue with ink bottles that have freshness seals! I have so much trouble getting it off and especially without splatter; very unpleasant, indeed. All the best and stop by again.

    They are made out of resin. There is just one resin that we could call "plastic", it is used for small and cheap bags in supermarkets or other shops. But generally speaking, it is incorrect to say, that Montblanc pens are made out of plastic because they are not. The question is if it is a natural resin they use or not, because the material has a certain "warmth" to it, that you do not have when you touch plastic.

    It’s only 'boring' because there are now so many newer pens with design and colour options to entice us. But the 149 is a classic and a style icon. I was very fortunate in that I found one in a friends pencil tin by his telephone. It had belonged to his father, but as he never used it, he gave it to me. I spent €10 to get the piston fixed (not by Mont Blanc), but the nib was, and still is perfect. I never post, as I like to hold the cap in my left hand while writing.

    The 149 model was introduced in 1952, not the 1920s.

      “It's all in the name. The Meisterstück - German for masterpiece - is both a piece of art and a rich slice of history. Almost 100 years after its first introduction in 1924, the Meisterstück is the best known writing instrument of any Montblanc collection.” From Montblanc’s website. Thanks.

    Cramping has nothing to do with the girth of a pen, but with poor technique (especially grip tightness). Consider writing with a #2 pencil and minimum pressure.

      @@HemingwayJones Well, you're entitled to your opinion but dystonia is usually associated with poor technique, poor posture, of simply overuse. And in roughly 20% of cases it is hereditary. Nothing to do with pen size, sorry.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  3 роки тому +2

      @@davyj5216 Yes exactly. I am the foremost authority on my opinion and yes, a thicker pen is more comfortable for me due to the simple fact that it is more comfortable. It has everything to do with pen size for me.

    • @davyj5216
      @davyj5216 3 роки тому

      @@HemingwayJones Does it? Have you tried changing your grip technique, or even trying to write with a whole arm movement instead of finger writing? You likely find the thicker pen more comfortable because it compensates for poor grip and technique. Speaking from personal experience as a guy with very large hands I can say that I don't experience writer's cramp no matter what the girth of a pen. Probably because I was actually taught to write with the correct technique. The point is that you are limiting the range of tools you can use by not addressing incorrect technique. By the way, the 149 is not a big pen to me, about average really.
