Thanks for the detailed description & classification on MB nib sizes; made it easier for me to choose the right nib - Medium. Thankyou again, for such informative videos.
Hi, there! Thanks for your comment! We're so glad our videos helped you choose the perfect nib! Enjoy your new pen! 😊 Happy writing and have a great day! Chris
Hi, there! Thanks for your comment! 😊 "Congrats on the new pen! Broad nibs are great for smooth ink flow and you'll surely gonna love it! ✍️ Let us know how it writes! Have a great day! 🫶 Ellah
@@PenboutiquePluswell, I said I'd let you know. My Montblanc Meisterstück 146 LeGrand has shown up and it is very nice. It puts down more ink than any other pen I've had. It is very smooth, and I currently have J. Herbin Émeraude de Chivor in it. I had put some Montblanc permanent blue in it, but I found that ink to be disappointing. I found it was a bit washed out looking and it didn't produce crisp lines even on very high quality paper. The Emerald of Chivor on the other hand looks amazing. Especially with how much ink this pen lays down
I accidentally won a 146 on an eBay auction but I was a little nervous because it was a broad and I was afraid that the line width would be too much. However I really enjoy writing with a stub so you have given me great relief! Thanks
I have a 146 & 149, both of which I inherited from my late father. Without the original box, is there any way to ascertain the nib sizes on these pens? Both my pens seem to write a broad, wet line, which I’ve always preferred and loved best in fountain pens. But how to confirm the nib size, though? I wish MB also offered a broad cursive italic. Oblique is not for me, but italics suit me very well.
I Have a Montblanc 142 with a simple "O" nib. I don't see that size very often and the information available is also very limited. It is even missing from your listing here...
Hi there, Thank you for your comment! An Oblique nib has a broad tip with rounded edges, but cut at an angle - usually 15° - to match the writing angle of the user. While these nibs may not be as commonly listed, we can assist you further if you need more details or assistance with finding oblique nibs. Please feel free to reach out! Happy writing! Ellah
Try adjusting the nib to make it dryer this gives a finer line and also using less pressure on the paper so that the tynes don't spread also gives a finer line. There are videos that show how, but best to practice on a less expensive nib first. HTH
It would be great to see a repeat of this comparison with fountain pen friendly paper. I have used those Montblanc testing pads before, and they don't represent nib widths very accurately for those that use good quality paper. Any chance of a repeat with some Tomoe River or similar?
Hi, there! Thanks for your comment. We appreciate the suggestion! We'll definitely consider a follow-up comparison video using fountain pen-friendly paper to provide a more accurate representation of nib widths. Stay tuned for the upcoming video!
I have got Montblanc Meisterstück EF nib (0.43 mm) and this nib is still to broad form me. I tried to write up-side-down by flipping the nib and then it was what I am looking for. What kind of fountain pan I should look for this or better quality and similar size? Japaneses ones with Ultra Extra Fine nib? Which one you recommend? Japanese nibs are thinner than European?
Hi, Semper! Thanks for your comment. You may use Pilot, Namiki, Platinum, and Sailor Fountain pens. Generally, all the Extra-Fine nib are 0.2mmm, and the Ultra Extra-Fine will be thinner and Japanese nib point sizes are thinner than European nibs. @@PenboutiquePlus Chris, it's there any way to make my extra fine nib on a new (2007) Meisterstuck Chopin 145 EF Nib more fine. It writes like a broad.....Nibmeister?
Finding the right nib is even harder for Left hander's. I prefer an oblique fine, but they're like Hen's teeth, so I generally get mine reground from med to fine.
Hi Nigel, thanks for your comment. A small number of pen brands offer left handed nibs for fountain pens like Lamy Fountain pens. The difference being that the nib is cut in the opposite direction than a regular nib. Thank you and happy writing! Chris
Thank you for a great video and info. Question, I have two 149's that I'd like to have serviced. Any idea who can do that for me? I just need them in optimal shape. Thank you so much
Montblanc have a video that shows how to clean with warm water, I just cleaned mine after leaving it without a cartridge for months, its fine, I had a leak issue which I returned it to Germany 6 years ago, but for regular cleaning, you can do yourself no problem, there is nothing to service if the nib is free of deposits.
I sent mine back to Montblac through a local dealer. I believe they charged me $100 for a complete servicing of my 146 which I bought in 1992. Sent it in in 2015.
You're welcome! We greatly appreciate your feedback. Please don't hesitate to let us know if there's anything we can assist you with. We are always here for you. Have a great day! Chris
Hi, Dean! 🙂 Thank you for your comment. Every fountain pen brand nib sizes can deviate from each other and that handmade nibs are always unique and therefore have unique sizes. The Montblanc Fountain pen w/ Medium nib is 0.6mm, and TWSBI w/ M nib is 0.5mm, and other common fountain pen nib like the Pelikan w/ M nib is 0.7mm and the Aurora w/ M nib is 0.5mm. Have a nice day! 😉 Chris
@@PenboutiquePlus How would a Pelican extra fine compare to a Montblanc extra fine? I have just acquired a Pelican extra fine, and it is quite nice. My Montblanc Medium seems too broad for my usual writing.

How is XF nib? I love to write with fine nibs and deciding to get MB149 soon. However, i just cant decide if i should get XF or F. I dont want to get XF and strechy respond while writing.
Hi, there! Thank you for your comment. Montblanc Fountain pens with Fine nibs are very smooth in writing and it's not really a wet writer like Pelikan pens. I tend to like a nib that is moderately wet regardless of width and so either select pens that have that characteristic. I've had Montblanc's that were dry writers but always then changed the flow. You might want to try different ink and paper as a degree of wetness is also affected by improper adjustment, the size of one's handwriting, ink, and paper. If you need anything else, please just let us know. We are always here for you. Thank you and have a nice day! - Chris 😉
@@PenboutiquePlus thank you very much for the quick reply. Right now i m having 3 fountain pens m205,pilot metropolitan & Sheaffer & all are medium nib. I live m205 smoothness, but its writes broader than pilot, i like the fond width of pilot smoothness of m205. Now i am planning to upgrade to MB, so which nib i should choose fine or extra fine? Is EF is as smooth as m205 medium nibs? Or i should stick with medium? These days i am not using m205 medium only because of the broad fond coming from it.
Hi, there! Thank you for your question. Montblanc pens are incredibly and fantastic writers as a large part of the purpose of a luxury pen. you can always send the pens off to montblanc but that’ll cost you money
the best thing is probably to measure the line width and compare it to other recorded line widths

Extra fine is a bit finer than fine. But fine is a lot smoother than extra fine. If you have a smaller handwriting, you should get the extra fine.
