- Is it really possible to compare these three wonderful, remarkable pens? Well I attempted the impossible..
I used the soundtrack of my favorite western classic for the intro.. enjoy and happy writing!!
The Pelikan M1000 is actually offered in 2 standard colors. The green striped you have and a black one with a green inkwindow.
I‘m personally waiting for the M1005 Stresemann (Special Edition), which was delayed from February to September. I hope that it will finally launch in September. In the meantime I got myself 2 Pelikan. The M205 Demonstrator (M), which I enjoy a lot and the M815 Metal Striped (B). The B nib on the M815 is awesome. I find that the ....15 Metal Striped finish is the best they ever made (for me personally), followed by the Ocean Swirl which I don’t have... sadly :/ An M1015 Metal Striped would be extremely awesome :) The Demonstrators run out of competition, they are just nice as well :)
I think I would choose the M nib for my M1005 Stresemann.

The M1000 is only (important:) _regularly_ offered in black with a green inkwindow and in Green Striped or sometimes referred to as green/black.
Other Souveräns like the M600 or M800 for example are regularly offered in different colors. …like Stresemann or Blue Striped.
The other variants of the M1000 are special or even limited editions which aren’t regularly offered in the standard program. The M1005 Stresemann for example is a special edition from about 2019. :)

You say the nib and writing is better in the KOP over the 149, but you rate the 149 better overall because it holds more ink?! Personally, how a pen writes is 95% of the reason why a pen is more desirable over others. Refilling ink is part of the fun ritual of owning fountain pens. Tolerating a stiff nib that causes forearm pain is not part of that fun.
Very interesting review. I have found after owning several Pelikans is that a M is sometimes a B, a M is sometimes a F, and a F is sometime a M. One wonders how they can be so inconsistent. Each writes well but it is not what is claims to be in nib size. Otherwise, great pens. I have found that the Montblancs are entirely consistent.
The music was a fantastic addition, I loved it. I love all those pens! What a difficult decision!
I have only just discovered your channel, and I found the opening to be great fun, as did everyone else. I appreciate your style of a review which is less data-driven, and more subjective, because you tell us your own tendencies up front. In my own case, I was vacillating in choice of a big pen to replace my previous 149, which had beenstolen. So I bought both an M1000 and another 149. I will admit that the M1000 is slightly better, but I have owned a 149 since 1972, and so I could not bear going without one. And I just can't seem to talk myself into a KOP.
What do you have against the KOP? From what I've heard the finish is exquisite. I'm in the market for a new pen, haven't gotten one in years, so I'm taking my time, doing my research before deciding
How do you like the M1000 compared to say an M800? I'm looking to buy my first Pelikan M series. Also, debating on nib type as well between EF & F.

I like your handwriting! It’s very unique. Wonderful pens. I ordered an M800 today. I’ve wanted a Pelikan since I got into pens and saw a sale that I couldn’t turn down.
Whilst that is true, almost anyone's handwriting would look superb using any of these 3 top class, even world class, pens.

I enjoyed this review, and felt you gave a good account of each pen. Just one point though - I know a lot of people say a little bit of baby's bottom isn't an issue with a new pen. I personally disagree. If correcting something that prevents a pen from working properly, invalidates or even risks invalidating the warranty, then in my opinion, it is significant.

Where can I find those soft pen cases? The one housing the 149 and M1000?

The 149 certainly does come in multiple finishes, or trims at least . There's the black with the gold trim like what you have, there's black with rose gold trim and black with platinum plated (silver) trim. Same goes for KoP. The KoP actually comes in different colours as well as trims.
The M1000 comes in green stripes, but there's also a black version with an ink window, and now there's the M1005 Stresemann with black cap and grey striped barrel, with silver coloured trims.
The M1000/1005 has also been sold as a demonstrator before, and there have been a few raden/maki-e limited runs as well.
Your videos are a great service to fountain pen communities everywhere. Thank you for creating them. One consideration that makes the Pelikan attractive: it is very easy to change nibs. This makes a single Pelikan a versatile pen, in addition to being an excellent writer (using any nib).
You're right. That's a big advantage with Pelikan.
It makes things a lot easier :) You don’t need to decide what nib you want on a particular pen. You can just look for what you need currently. It also gives you the option to choose the cheapest combination. You can also change the size when you like to :) It also allows you the grease the piston if it is needed at one point in time. Additionally it might help you when you have cleaning problems. There are a lot of perks that come with this design :)
But since the nibs are so inconsistent..... you can spend thousands of dollars just on nibs and never get the with you really wanted. I wonder how many people actually do that.

Dr Fountain Pens The Namiki Emporer is definitely pen I would like to own :) Because of it’s big nib ;) I really like that it doesn’t have a clip. I don’t really like clips.
I usually wanted to get the M1005 Stresemann, but today I got a good deal for the the green striped M1000 with a medium nib. I‘m now waiting for it, but this doesn’t mean that I won’t get the M1005 ;) sooner or later.

The first serious fountain pen that I purchased was the small Sailor Professional Gear. I want to write with it all the time, because of its medium nib. There was no ink in the reservoir, and yet the pen wrote for some time. I just absolutely love the feedback of the medium Sailor nib on paper.

Yup, best intro ever! And perfect trifecta to compare!! Size does matter to me, and I've lusted after the 149 for half a century, but value matters more than girth - an issue recently resolved by Jinhao ;) Not sure quite how it happened but over the decades I've managed to aquire (in this particular order) a vintage Pelikan Sovereign that was already old in 1970, a couple of 200s (installed a Sheaffer 14K Lifetime in one and vintage Pelikan F italic in the other, which is possibly the smoothest, crispest nib I own) then traded an old Parker Duofold for my first all black 800 (M writes like wet F) followed by the black 805 (my esthetic fave, with custom ground stub) followed finally by (que soundtrack) my grail 1000 with springy wet M. Have to admit however, deapite what I said about size mattering (meaning girth of course rather than length) the 800s are my most comfortable writing pens of them all. Love the feel of my Sailor 1911 in hand but the nib is so disappointing, so my lust quotient isn't that high for the KOP. Great vid man, thank you!!!

I am on Team Sailor. I was browsing through KOPs just yesterday - that is my choice. All I care about is the nib, and I think it has the best nib. That said, I also admire the M1000 greatly. It looks very special. No thanks on the MB.

I'd agree with you about MB but vintage meisterstucks are exceptional. Even I'd go with the Sailor only if I had to choose only 1 pen

I completely agree with your assessment but for me which relatively small hands (size 7 surgical gloves) i think the best choice is Pelikan M800 Brown Black !

Pelikan M1000 in Blue Black. EF nib. Second would be Sailor KOP. Third would be Montblanc.
M1000 has a very wet nib. I prefer EF and F nib over M nib as a daily writer. Montblanc 149 is all time favourite. KOP nibs are the best ones but the downside is its poor ink capacity unless you are using cartridges

My reply is 4 years after this video was made and after the pandemic. Since at around the start of the pandemic, Pelikan gave excuses as to why they had to do away with the ink windows as well as the nice barrel finishes which allowed seeing the ink levels through some of the barrel designs in there higher end pens. So what is left now is still an expensive pen with no way of telling ink levels and still gross inconsistencies with nib widths as well as Pelikan quit offering a larger line of nib options. What did we get for all that? Prices increased! For the life of me, I can't imagine why I would buy a single pen from Pelikan for one of those (now) mediocre, over priced ink holders.
Montblanc continues to shine with with still more nib choices, more ink storage and more consistency in nib widths. I won't even mention Sailor when they continue to only offer a nearly Microscopic converter even for their King of Pen. King? Really? 🙄.... Not even close (imho). I'm sticking with the consistencies, reliability and quality of Montblanc.

Of the six Sailors I have four have scratchy nibs. I always advise people to try the Sailor nib before buying one. Many are disappointed expecting a smooth nib. If you want smooth nib your best bet is Platinum Preppy in medium.
The final question is which one feels best at writing... That makes you write more

I own one M1000 and two M1005 by now, all 3 are Medium nibs and they all write very similar. Extremely wet and broader than your regular M, but consistent within themselves. :) Though I personally tuned one M1005 to write a hint finer, but ridiculously wet :P

san2881 The M on the 1000 is definitely a broad in regular pen standards.
But I don t own many other Pelikans, only a M815 with a broad nib, which is actually on the lower end of broad nibs in terms of wetness and width. I also have two M205 one with a M nib, which runs actually quite fine and a f nib which runs quite wide and wet, though I bought the one with the F nib used, so I have no clue if it has been altered. I also have a Pelikan M300 Green Striped with a broad which is what I would consider to be a regular juicy broad nib. I don t know how far off the other M nibs are in the other models, or even if they are off of the size designation, but the one the M1000 really runs a good chunk wider and wetter (great nib though).:)

1000 is certainly for those who like a bit of movement in the nib with writing flow. The general syntax used is Springy.

I do not own the M1000; however, I still prefer the M800 (two of them) to my own Montblanc 149, which is older and comes with the 14K (still beautiful) nib. Good review. I get that the Japanese many not want to disturb the elegant beauty of one piece (not cut) for the body; however, some innovation is necessary. With its girth, perhaps it is as simple as a super-capacity converter. After all, the converter is much easier to maintain and to replace if it develops a problem. I love the Pilot Custom 823 with its fill mechanism and larger nib for its price range, but it is not likely in this competition. THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOROUGH REVIEW AND OPINION.

The only thing I don't like about Sailor is the filling mechanism. At that price point you would expect a piston filler and not a cartridge system.

I have a 845, MB Le Grand, Pelikan m 800, Pilot PCU & 2 Sailor KOP, Omas 360 & a Platinum President. I love them all but feel that Platinum President is an underrated pen. MB 146 is most practical EDC.
I see you put effort in this vid and opening kudos.
However regarding pens you cannot say “what if you have to choose between one of them for the sake of owning only one.” Min 3:12. You always choose between two or more.
It’s nice that you have beautiful pens.
It is my humble opinion that you’d benefit from making these vids in your native language. And your viewers would benefit too.
Make a grammar mistake on the 'net and the fury of Hell will follow. I once worked as a proofreader. When a writer made the kind of error you pointed out, I was always inclined to let such errors pass as the text was still understood. As a rule, I never changed a writer's original text unless there were, for instance, legal reasons. Saving the publisher from being sued was the real reason for proofing.

149 is blondie
I had all three of these. I really didn’t like M1000 fine nib. I found it very finicky. 149 has the best built quality of the three IMO but the nib is a bit middle of the road stiff easy to use but boring nib. I like KOP nib best but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who is just getting into fountain pens and is writing in cursive. So for me is 1st KOP, 2nd MB149 and 3rd M1000.

I'm sorry I just can't get this button thing right but anyway what I was saying is that somebody left four grocery bags of clothes, sneakers and pens and pencils and at the bottom of one of the grocery bags left on the corner of my street for anyone who was in need of extra clothes or shoes they have grown out , some rich person decided to leave stuff on the corner ...I don't live in a poor neighborhood but I don't live in a rich neighborhood.... Just a regular neighborhood in Norwalk Connecticut ,The grocery store bags were from Darien CT. I live in Norwalk CT. , they came to my neighborhood , left it on the corner..... and at the bottom of one bag was a Black box ...leather and I opened it up.... and a montblanc 149 Six pen was sitting there with an ink bottle ...it was a set just sit there in this box !!!!!!! no clue of the value or what the name montblanc was ....but , the name registered a familiar tune in My Head... like a cross pen that you've heard of or run across that you would know of....but didn't take the clothes left the sneakers left the pencils and pens and notebooks but decided to take the pen set in the box home.... across the Street i wasn't too sure about bed bugs so I put it in a plastic bag then later on in the night I looked it up on the internet just to see what it was and how much it was worth and to my astonishment the pain was worth a thousand if not two thousand dollars..... unbelievable ......😮!!!! It's amazing what people will throw out.... especially wealthy people . I'm still amazed at my lucky find.... So that's the story of how I got my first montblanc pen..... Last night.... Unbelievable... But the stories true
