My thoughts on the Montblanc 149 Meisterstück, A Legendary Masterpiece. This is the best video I have ever produced. I am so proud of this and I hope that you enjoy it.
I do have half a dozen of 149s (and will continue adding more units to my collection), four full sterling silver Solitaire 146s, one Oscar Wilde, and other MBs... (Plus dozens and dozens from other brands). I love them all, but we can certainly assure that the 149 is the most iconic fountain pen in the World. Period.
I can't tell you how much I enjoy your content. I like that you talk about pens, journals, etc., and how you use them as opposed to simply reviewing them. There's nothing wrong with a straight review and they're entertaining and useful, but it's so nice to see content about using pens and what you think about them as you've used them.
Thank you very much Lisa for the kind comment. I appreciate your liking my channel and I will continue to work hard to put out good videos. I do try to make these more about that just the reviews. Thanks and stop by again soon.
Very nice presentation, Hemingway. I also love the Montblanc 149 and find I somehow own three (3) of them, which I've accumulated over the past 40 years. My first was a reward to myself in 1981 for beginning a new job at the corporate headquarters of a Fortune 100 company. Things were certainly less expensive back then, as I only paid $350 for my first brand-new MB 149 from Neiman Marcus, in Fort Worth, TX. That's turned out to be the least-cost version I have.. The other two I bought much later, used, for more money.
Thanks so much for the kind words and informative comment. You got that first one at a great time. Mine was a gift, but I know it cost $600 a little over ten years ago. All the best.
Interesting fact, the classic epitome of the "Fancy Black Pen" is actually made of very dark red resin that looks black in most lighting (and is likely a large part of why it has that certain visual "grabbiness" to it's appearance you don't get with true black plastic/resin pens). If you stick a bright light at the entrance of the cap and shine it towards the finial, the red comes out.
I love everything about this pen. Your passion for it is contagious. One day soon, I will be able to experience the euphoria you so eloquently articulate, when I acquire this work of art. I can't wait.
@@HemingwayJones Blue 😜 It will be Rohrer & Klingner Royal Blue. Looks like Montblanc Royal Blue or old Quink Royal Blue. But it's pH7 and completely water soluble. It's fairly lightfast and writes well. I have at least 30 different blue inks, but when it comes to expensive piston and vacuum fillers, I'm like sbrebrown. I do gladly also use 'nasty' inks, but in other pens.
Before Christmas, I found a used MB 149 90th anniversary on sale, at what seemed like a much lower price than normal. As much as I tried to reason with spending so much on a pen, in the end I just thought 'life is short, you might never get this chance again'. And so I went for it in order to join the MB club and scratch that itch which I had for 10 years.... and it is super lovely! I find myself using it much more than the Pelikan M800 which was, until now, easily the best pen I own. The nib is flawless - I put a sheet of copier paper on top of a duvet, scribbled fast writing on it, and it captured every stroke without skipping. Incredible. I would actually like to try the normal 149 next, so I shall see if I can find one at the end of the year (I always prefer to buy pens in winter, to mark the end of a year in time). Anyways, thanks for making this amazing celebration of the 149 - probably my favourite, and greatest, pen I shall ever own
Thanks so much and thank you for that wonderful MB story. Amazing. What a buy! Well done, indeed. Thanks so much for watching. You will find a lot of MB videos on here. I adore those pens. All the best.
Hi Hemingway Jones, now that's a beautiful tribute to the Montblanc 149. And yes, this one also belongs to my holy grail fountain pen. Whenever I start with the 149 for a longer writing period, I have caught myself before using the fountain pen, that I always create a certain setting on my desk as if it were some kind of ritual. This pen brings out certain things in me that I don't have with other fountain pens, except for the Egyptomania, but that's another story the Egyptomania brings out the adventurer in me. Anyway, I can recommend everyone, if they have the opportunity and as they can also conclude from your beautiful representation of this beautiful fountain pen, to purchase one so that they can experience for themselves what this fountain pen can bring about. For me the pen that I will cherish all my life. Thanks again Hemingway for this beautiful documentary of the Montblanc 149 Meisterstuck
Wonderful video. Thank you. I too love my 149 but my first love is my PFM. Thinking of learning to write with my other hand so we can have 3-somes. One problem. - I've got the Cross Peerless on order and no more hands. What to do?
Hello My Friend! I don’t do it myself. I would torture myself with doubt after the fact. I’ve always taken my pens in for service. I am looking for a new place. Mine sadly closed.
This is a masterpiece, Hemingway!! I truly felt the romance, the adoration, the salute for the 149. Thank you, always a pleasure watching your content. Cheers.
Hi Hemingway, what a great video and spotlight on a legend! I have a 149 in Rose Gold I bought in 2016, and the 149 Calligraphy in 2020, and I love them both. They are such handsome pens, and it's in it's size that make them look so good. They have the perfect proportions that give it it's appeal, and I have to say despite it's girth, you get use to the size, and becomes perfectly comfortable for long writing sessions. It has amazing charisma, and endless appeal, I often find myself admiring the elegant silhouette of the pen sitting on my desk. I love the massive nib, and it puts down such a wonderful juicy and responsive line. Add the calligraphy flex nib, and it's the only pen I want to use. Thanks for this video, really enjoyed it!
WELL DONE, Hemingway! Wonderful camera shots, editing, and overall feel! You've hit a new high with this video. I'm not sure I'll ever buy this classic pen, but I'll watch your videos all day, everyday. My collection has grown to 18 pens in the last two months since I started following you and your channel. And I definitely am in love with all of them. However, the way you presented the 149 sure makes me consider dropping the cash for this beauty.... time will tell..... I won't be surprised if I've got one in my growing collection in the future. Thanks for the great content, I'm off to watch your Ferris Wheel video again (another one of your best videos!).
@@HemingwayJones you’re quite welcome! I have only owned one fountain pen, and I believe I was in the sixth grade. It was such a terrible pen, but I loved it! I haven’t owned one since, but I have seen all of your videos and have only missed the latest live as it was streaming.. it makes me want to have a 149!
Hi Hemingway! I absolutely love your channel and I hope more and more folks keep finding you. I was wondering what the Nib width/size was in your video - Or, what size (i.e. Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, etc) you would recommend on the Montblanc 149 for journaling and even for note-taking? I'm new to fountain pens and I'm concerned about smearing.
Hello Nate and thanks very much! I am so glad that you are enjoying things here. The Montblanc 149 is an awesome pen. In fact, I have it with me right now. Mine is a medium. If you like to cram a lot of notes in, I would consider a Fine. Smearing depends on a lot of factors, ink drying time, paper, and whether you run your hand across it too soon, which is how I usually smear things! So, MNB Fines are very nice. Perhaps ask yourself how thick of a line you prefer. I like mediums. I would say that this one trends wet, so if smearing is a concern, it is something to consider. Let me know what you decide and how I may help further.
@@HemingwayJones Brilliant, thank you so much for taking the time to explain these intricacies. I do prefer a bit of a thicker line on the paper but, like you, I have a bad habit of running my hand across the paper! It’s good to know this one runs wet, that is very helpful and exactly what I was wondering. I’ll definitely keep you posted on what I decide - Thank you again and have a great week!
I never had to buy the majestic Montblanc 149. I inherited it from my late father. I later bought the MB 146 Grande, which I admit I like and prefer more, overall. Yet, the 149 will forever retain the profound sentimental value it holds for me. I sometimes think that the top-fight MB pens like the 149 are definitely priced really too high, but actually only most worth buying if one chooses to get one of the specialty nibs rather than the standard EF-to-B range. I have my 146 w/M nib and the 149 with an F. They are both splendid writers. , no question. But I know from experience you could get even better writing pens for quite a lot less than the price of a new 149. I also wish these upscale flagship MB pens marked their nibs with their actual size points. It is inexplicable why they don’t do it. All that said, I appreciate and applaud your love for your Montblanc 149. It’s a true keeper. I trust you will keep and cherish it always. I will, mine.
I am not certain why Montblanc does not etch the nib size onto their nibs, but I do know that they adhere a small sticker with the nib size to the barrel before shipping. I carefully removed my sticker and "re-stuck" it inside the pen case for future reference.
Thank you very much for the excellent comment in the great opinion. I can say that the Calligraphy nerve is more than just marked! It’s hard to miss that one. My medium there is a bit generic but as was written before they do put those little stickers on them as I am sure you know. In any case, I am so glad you like the pen and am more glad that you liked the video. Stop by again soon.
I cannot speak for the 149, but I can give the 146 Le Grand my full praises. Quite simply, it is pen perfection. Mine is with the gold trim and the 14k "EF" nib. The nib is very smooth for an "EF", and it has its own character in that the down strokes are slightly wider than the side strokes. It never skips or dry starts. (I only use Montblanc ink). I have purposely left it inked and unused for over a month and it wrote without a hint of hesitation. Say what you will about the price, but Montblanc makes a great pen! I wouldn't call it a "wow" factor necessarily, but every time I use it, there is a supreme satisfaction.
Hello John, thank you very much for the kind comment and great information. That pen sounds awesome. As you may know I also have one of those in the flex nib and it’s very nice. I agree that they are excellent pens that give you a lot of joy and are very much worth the price.
@@HemingwayJones I could have gone on and on, but did not want to do a TLDR (Too long, didn't read). No regrets with this one! Definitely an heirloom to be passed down... (still not saying enough!)
Wow this is beautiful. Wish I could write with one yet alone purchase one. Hemmingway, I heard Jinhao makes a inexpensive copy that is a good writer. Thanks for this video BLESSINGS
@@HemingwayJones thank you for your response and you just got a new sub. Finally at a point where I can buy some of my grail pens, this being one of them. Would love to hear an episode on your other top four pens.
@@macmovieman1 Thank you and welcome. Funny, I am writing a script for my revised top 5 favorite pens, so I think you will see that in a month or so! Thanks for being here.
Thank you for the lovely video. I agree with you there is something very special about the 149. It's one of those rare pens that despite being very showy it's a very comfortable pen that begs to be used. It may seem like a signature pen at first but it's a its best in long writing sessions. I really miss mine, I sent it to be reground since I'm not a fan of the Montblanc nib tip. For me it was too broad for a medium and lacked a certain something. It'll hopefully come back as an extra fine.
Thanks very much for the kind comment. So glad you enjoyed the video. The one thing is great about this hobby is how everyone likes their nibs differently. All the best and come see me again.
@@HemingwayJones thank you. Indeed, there's a pen and nib for everyone. And even though the Montblanc grind isn't my personal favourite I really appreciate how unique it is. I certainly will. Stumbled upon your channel while searching for videos about the Pilot 823 and your presentation and videography made me a regular.
@@penoutoften3984 Thanks so much! I always love to know how people find their way to this quiet corner of YT. So happy to have you. The 823 is such an amazing pen!
I can't wait to get my first 149 - For a long time I didn't think that I would get one, because it's out of budget most of the time. But lately I feel the pull of getting one. I honestly think it's becase of getting the Jinhoa X159 that I want to experience the real thing. BTW-- I noticed your Tarot Decks -- I was trying to see what version of the RWS that you had... Doing that made me realize that I have paid more for decks than a good priced used 149...
Hello Wolf, You need to watch the video again. If you see the point where I enter my study and look to the left in the bookcases, you can see the 100+ decks of Tarot cards my wife has; many vintage and some new. So we are similar. I actually used two decks in this film. I used the extra large SW; these are the gigantic ones larger than an IPhone Max and I used the gold foil SW. Both make excellent backgrounds. I have a modest collection of 4 or 5 decks. I bought both of these at Watkins in St. Cecil Ct in London off of ST. Martin’s s Lane; an amazing shop. Something else, funny, I just ordered the X159 and for this channel. It should arrive in about a month.
@@HemingwayJones You never can tell with photos! My collection is over flowing. I like the Foiled Deck it's really nice. I am glad you are using Smith Waite SW for the reference. I have deck reviews on my channel. Fountain Pens and Tarot go together! I buy many decks in Salem, but because I love vintage decks and TDM decks I tend to buy online. Thank you for sharing! I do admire you book collection as well!
Perhaps I’ll see you in Salem some time. We are there monthly, except Oct! We were just there last weekend. The sad fact is that I can only read SW. my wife can read any deck, but I need the familiar forms.
I bought Mb146 because my preferred nib size is European no.6, but I have subsequently bought a Jinhao9019 just to try a no.8/9 nib and find it surprisingly comfortable to use! - tbh, the only thing stopping me is that it’s not available in a Japanese EF(I’ve got small handwriting), but it is magnificent!:); thanks for this:)
My 149 was a present on the occasion of getting tenure/promotion at my university. I took it with me to the USSR in 1987 for a conference (kongress) in Moscow, and have enjoyed it ever since. I presently have it inked with Diamine blue-black. Objectophilia...what's not to like? I loved your Blue Danube accompaniment, reminiscent of Kubrick's "2001." Meisterstuecks in space...
Thank you, Paul! What a great comment. What an interesting time to be in the USSR. I am so glad you enjoyed the video. This was one time when I was able to get on film exactly what I was trying to say and show. Thank you!
I also love my 149, I bought it from a MB boutique and decided, after using for a few weeks that I would send it back to MB to change out the original medium nib to a fine one. It was returned to me in about three weeks and to be honest, I couldn’t tell the difference between the medium and fine nibs, they wrote the same to my eye.
thank you so much for the nice comments and for watching my video. I really appreciate this information. it’s always good to hear other peoples perspectives. Thank you
I bought my MontBlanc 149 in 1976, and have enjoyed it ever since. However, there is one problem. If I carry it in my suit coat inside pocket the nib sweats, inside the cap. You then have a problem when you go to use it. So, it never leaves my desk.
Hello Hemingway, I also have this pen because it is said that you have to have it. I'm not at all enthusiastic about the design or the performance. The fountain pen is really big, I would say too big. It is more suitable for the signatures than for the joyful writing. I think the menagers from Mont Blanc did a great job turning the 149 into a cult. I also have the smaller brother 146, who could accompany me in writing my diary, but he doesn't convince me either. It's too reminiscent of MB 149. But that's just my personal opinion without the slightest claim to general validity... Thank you very much for your great and inspiring videos! Michael
Thanks Michael, I always appreciate contrary opinions. I don’t know about the cult status. I imagine that there are fanboys out there that cannot say a bad thing about MB. Personally, I am so often disappointed with any pen I get from anyone that it is a relief to know that one company is consistent on quality and performance. Plus, I have larger hands and the 149 feels perfect for me. I do like the 146 as well. Always happy to chat. If you lived closer, I would liberate that 149 from you! ;-)
@@HemingwayJones Well... that's suspected of being hypocritical...:) You equate the MB 149 with the absolute fountain pen idea that could come from Plato… If that's not cult-making, then I don't understand the world anymore…. I've never heard anything quite like it about MB149… That's the greatest praise one can dream up... I can only take your statement metaphorically and more as a funny statement than a real assessment... I'm at home in Vienna… I'll keep the 149 to always have proof that there are many things better and more affordable than it. Thank you very much for your answer! It's always a pleasure!
@@michelgolabaigne595 I am amazed at your comment. It is truly the oddest thing I have read in all my years of doing social media. You are so literal minded and so absolutist that I can marvel at your uniqueness, but I will not suffer your casting dispersions my way. I am no hypocrite. How dare you, Sir. You clearly do not understand the world or a lot of things. I don't think you know what a cult is or the use of poetic language in a presentation like this. To explain it robs it of all its music and charm. It's so tedious. By the way, I am sure I can dream of better praise for another pen as well; stay tuned.
@@HemingwayJones Communication is the most difficult thing in the world...:) We talk past each other..., which is normal, English is not my first language and we have completely different life experiences. First of all, I would like to sincerely apologize for any misunderstandings that have arisen. I never had the malicious intentions... I used the word hypocritical just to hilariously imply that it's inconsistent when you say "I don't know about the cult status" As far as I understand the world (you're making that up in question :) your video contributes enormously to the cult of the MB 149... I'm terribly sorry that I can't share your enthusiasm...:( I hope that we can understand each other better in the future... Best Regards Michel
Hello Michael, Thanks for the kind reply and explanation. For me, criticize the pen, criticize what I say, how I say things, how I edit, but please just don’t impugn my reputation. Hypocrite is a very loaded word, setting aside that we all have our contradictions that we live with and rationalize. I think that what is missing here is something I see quite often and that’s the intent. I really like the pen for how it works for me and because my wife gave it to me. From my vantage point, much separated from a lot of what else is going out there because I am not connected to other reviewers, forums, etc., I see a fairly balanced appraisal of it on Live conversations and in the comment section with a prevailing and fair opinion, that it is nice, but not worth $900+ USD; fair and reasonable. This is what makes these comments so important; they are my window to the pen community. I also apologize for any anxiety this may have caused. It’s just a pen, and a video meant to entertain. There are much larger issues in the world. As for you and me, I think I hold you in higher esteem now in that our critics and contrarians give us the sharpest reflections of ourselves. Enjoy your Sunday.
Haha! No, not at all. That’s a “tattoo” that my daughter makes. She writes in marker on tape and sticks it to me. You can see it in a lot of my videos! LOL!
Dear Mr. Jones, As you are a fountain pen user for both business and pleasure, and not a retailer, I would value your opinions on your favorite permanent inks.
Hello and thank you! Perhaps surprisingly I don’t often use permanent inks because of the danger of spilling but when I do, I usually use Sailor Black. Kiwaguro.
Nicely done, Hemingway. I do not yet have the 149 but I do have the 146 and find it to be an expression of refined beauty. That enormous and intricately designed nib is intriguing and at some point I will surely take the dive and make the purchase. Was that Royal Blue Mont Blanc ink you were using?
@@davyj5216 This video is about the 149. We will be speaking more about the 146 soon. My admiration and affection for the 823 is well documented. It is an amazing pen. Check out my video on it.
I have a Montblanc Meisterstück 149, and I barely use it. Simply because it is just way too big for my hands, I also have a Montblanc Meisterstück 146 in a broad nib, and its just incredible! Even though on the 149 the nib is beautiful, large and such a nice pen too write with, it's just too painful to write with it overtime due to my hand being not the largest. 😂
Once again, this is an outstanding video, so great job! Yes, I am also an owner of a 149, though I feel that the ergonomics of the 146 is more suitable to my hand. The 149 nib is beautiful and its size certainly has a presence that practically everyone in the world can recognize the brand. It is a stiff nib if you compare it with its German rival, the Pelikan Souveran m1000, which has an amazing, bouncy nib. Overall, the 149 is a beautiful pen that I agree with you: it has established the benchmark to study and to analyze for producing luxury, fine writing instruments. Many others have either copied or used its base design to create similar ones. Though to add a bit of criticism: there are lower priced pens that write better, such as the Pilot Custom pen range to name one. In any case, one might drive a great Japanese car that may even perform better than a Mercedes, but... a Mercedes is a Mercedes: it is a symbol of priviledge. Absolutely nothing wrong on that because people have the legitimate right to make their own decisions which are mostly based on what emotions they feel about owning the product or even better, like yourself: a beautiful life memory and experience which is simply... priceless. Thanks again, stay safe and keep it up!
I will admit to a degree of objectophilia towards some of my pens, though i have never had the opportunity to acquire anything quite that nice. I suppose my pilot custom 74 fills the same role though.
How were you able to get an 18K? 🇫🇷 I may have been misinformed but I thought Montblanc (although being German) only sells 18K gold nibs in France. Don’t they only sell 14K for all other countries? I am in Canada. Thank you
Hi. My wife bought the MB from me here in the States. Depending on the years, they have 18 or 14K nibs. They have been 18 for a while. And are currently. Also, they are the same all over the world. Thanks for watching.
@@spruceguitar Actually, it's the other way around... Each country has a legal regulation according to which gold can only be called "gold" when its alloy has a minimum purity. In Germany, this minimum is 8K, however, the most widespread purity in this and other countries (Mexico, USA, Denmark, Holland, Finland, Norway...) is 14K. In Spain (my country), France, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy, the minimum purity for gold to be called "gold" is 18K. Montblanc, therefore, manufactured its nibs in 14K gold alloy for the markets of the countries mentioned above (including Germany), and in 18K gold alloy for the markets of the countries mentioned below, whose regulation is stricter and whose gold is of higher quality. Over the years, logically, units with 18K nibs can be found in countries that mainly use 14K gold and vice versa. Currently, if I'm not mistaken, Montblanc only makes 18K gold alloy nibs for the entire world. Best regards.
Hi Hemingway. I am reluctant to buy a 149 as a previous Montblanc I received as a gift had quality issues and was returned for a refund. A friend of mine also had a bad experience with Montblanc. My better half works in a department store that sells Montblanc pens and she could get one with a 25% staff price reduction. So, I am tempted but think I'll keep my money thank you. Hey, what's that big crack along the wall behind you? Subsidence?
I really think most of us ought to, if possible, to definitely test and try out such expensive pens at a physical store, before committing to buy. Bad experiences with ultra-pricey pens are particularly hard to swallow or easily forget. I’ve had two such experiences with pens costing $500+..And I still feel extremely sore about both.
Hello David! It’s not a crack; it’s a string of Faerie Lights that go around the entire porch. I am sorry to hear that you have had issues. At 25% off, I would risk it! You could always return it. Used is a good way to go too. It is a wonderful pen. All the best, My Friend.
Apologies for my eyesight and thinking your home was sinking into the ground. Of course I can see they are faerie lights now. I think I need an eye test!
I find my pen collecting funny, I started with a vintage parker, then got a 149, then downgraded to a sailor 1911, now I'm gonna buy another 149. The issue with fountain pens now and days is that to many of them just aren't that good, so to find a solid pen that does everything it was made for well is extremely hard. The only pen I've tried that reaches that standard for a reasonable price is a vintage 149 (particularly an EF with the split ebonite feed). The montblanc 149 is like a Bmw s1000rr, it does everything so perfectly it's nearly boring. Which is why we see many customized 149's now and days I presume. Seriously though, a vintage EF 149 is perfect... and for now you can still get them in perfect condition from the 80's since no body really used them all that much back then.
I don’t understand this comment. What do you mean? Do you base your opinions on what other people think? What does the amount of likes have to do with the quality of anything? I am perplexed.
@@HemingwayJones This is a video about the Montblanc Meisterstück 149 and at the time I watched it, there were 149 likes. I couldn't bring myself to ruin that coincidence. Haha
It's no doubt a classy pen, but I'm with reviewer SBRE Brown on this one....the 149 does not represent the pinnacle of fountain pens. Purely in terms of writing experience, I found the nib inferior to the Sailor King of Pen, the Pelikan M1000 and the Namiki Emperor. One speaks as one finds.
I recently picked up a Pelican M800…and that was an extremely smooth nib. Bought it in bold. Liked it so much, I bought a 2nd. Is the 1000 significantly smoother than the 800?
I own this pen, it is not inferior. All these flagships are another take of the fountain pen writing experience. The 149 is a nib full of character you can't fully understand after just a quick test or a single sentence. It's takes owning and writing it to discover all the nuance and charm of this pen's writing experience. It's a lovely writer that spits with the best writing pens in the world.
@@maxbowie6074 Dear sir, "SBRE Brown" is just one more person (like you and me) who gives his opinion. And all opinions are subjective. Nothing else. To me, in my experience, writing with the Pelikan M1000 is not as pleasant as with the Montblanc 149 for two reasons: all my 149 nibs are smoother than the M1000s and the ink flow in my 149s is perfect but in my M1000s it is excessive to the point that there are often ink leaks that stain the inside of the cap, the grip section and, consequently, the fingers when writing with them. Apart from the fact that the quality of the dark ruby-coloured vitreous resin used by Montblanc and the greater thickness of its gold nibs (the thickness of the Pelikan nibs is clearly thinner), is superior. Overall (history, design, quality, performance, image, aura...) I can say that the Montblanc 149 *IS* the most iconic pen in the world *AND* the pinnacle of fountain pens, even though you (and others) may prefer other models. Simply because to become “the pinnacle” and “the most iconic” pen it is necessary not only to be pretty and popular (which is purely subjective), but also to have quality, history, pedigree (this is not subjective), and also to have the majority of worldwide recognition (which is also not subjective). And the Montblanc 149 has all that and has earned it on its own merits throughout its decades of history. A Greubel Forsey watch, for example, although it may be of the highest quality and exclusivity imaginable, does not have the history, the pedigree and, therefore, the same worldwide recognition as a Patek Philippe, even though it may arouse even more admiration and passion... History is what forges icons. What is true is that over the years the price of the Montblanc 149 (and other MBs) has become unjustified, but that does not take away one iota from everything already mentioned.
It’s like an Ernest Hemingway sentence; it was revolutionary then and feels sort of ordinary now. It is the classic since it set the mold. Many have followers. Sailor 1911L perhaps the most representative of this. Buy it and use it for what it is. Pens are gorgeous and amazing tools and need to be devoured and used! All the best.
Beautiful video! You have convinced me to ditch my Waterman Expert and go with a MB 149.

I own 4 MontBlancs including 2 Meisterstuck, and never gotten this much information from the retailer, what a wonderful video, learned a lot thanks!
Thank you! I appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed it.
Very well presented and inspired me to buy one , cheers
Thank you very much! I hope that you enjoy the pen.
Interesting fact, the classic epitome of the "Fancy Black Pen" is actually made of very dark red resin that looks black in most lighting (and is likely a large part of why it has that certain visual "grabbiness" to it's appearance you don't get with true black plastic/resin pens). If you stick a bright light at the entrance of the cap and shine it towards the finial, the red comes out.
it’s lovely when the red shines through in some of my B Roll. thanks for watching!
I love mine. I love the look, the hand feel, the nib and its presence.
Excellent. It really is great.
Another delightful excursion. The mystique of pens is in potential. They mold society with signatures and shape culture with creativity.
I love this! Great comment and thank you.
I love everything about this pen. Your passion for it is contagious. One day soon, I will be able to experience the euphoria you so eloquently articulate, when I acquire this work of art. I can't wait.
Thanks so much! I am so glad you enjoyed this!
I will say this though..it truly feels like the father of all fountain pens. I may not fancy one of my own...but its nice to see these videos
Thanks very much!
Truly one of the best commentaries in Honour of MB 149. I own this and can vouch that it has an unmatchable class of its own.
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it.
As a Dutch 149 lover I salute you. This video is magnificent.
Thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed it.
My 149 is actually next in line to be inked up for a rotation. I'm looking forward to it.
Wonderful! Which color shall it be?
@@HemingwayJones Blue 😜
It will be Rohrer & Klingner Royal Blue.
I love blue. Great colors there. All the best.
Great, great video….
Thank you very much! I am so glad that you enjoyed it.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words and couldn’t agree more. Keep in touch.
Beautiful, was watching this as I shellacked a new ink sack to a Parker 51 (149 on my desk).
Very nice! I have an Esterbrook I can send over! Lol. So glad you liked it.
Wonderful video. Thank you. I too love my 149 but my first love is my PFM. Thinking of learning to write with my other hand so we can have 3-somes. One problem. - I've got the Cross Peerless on order and no more hands. What to do?
Love this comment! So funny and so true. Thanks for the kind word.
Mr. Jones, Namaste! How do you lubricate your 149? With what and how often?
Hello My Friend! I don’t do it myself. I would torture myself with doubt after the fact. I’ve always taken my pens in for service. I am looking for a new place. Mine sadly closed.
This is a masterpiece, Hemingway!! I truly felt the romance, the adoration, the salute for the 149. Thank you, always a pleasure watching your content. Cheers.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
I’ve been enjoying my 149 since 1985 !!
Wonderful!
Thank you so much for watching and telling your story. I am happy to have you here stop by again. All the best.
It's my favorite as well!
It's so good!
Thank you so much, Matt! I appreciate it greatly. I am so glad you enjoyed this video I really enjoyed making it. Thanks so much and keep in touch.
I have shorts that match your shirt, Great minds and all that. Enjoyed the video, thanks
Patch Madras is the best! Thank you!
Love the Tarot decks! Great background
Thank you!
Love the newer format! I really enjoyed the video!
Thank you so much!
Thank you so so much! That makes me so happy to hear.
@@NaderTerani Good Luck and thanks for your kind words!
Beautiful! Tell us now how you acquired this fine writing instrument?
Thank you so much. My Lovely wife bought it for me.
It has no equals basically. I have them yes. Wonderful explanation.
Thanks so much! I am glad you enjoyed this.
I try to read everything!
Wow this is beautiful. Wish I could write with one yet alone purchase one. Hemmingway, I heard Jinhao makes a inexpensive copy that is a good writer. Thanks for this video BLESSINGS

What size nib were you using? It look like a fine.
Hello, that is a Medium. Thanks for watching.

Montblanc will change the nib in your new pen for any other if you're not happy with it free of charge.
Thanks very much for the kind comment. So glad you enjoyed the video. The one thing is great about this hobby is how everyone likes their nibs differently. All the best and come see me again.
@@martinbowles9884 unfortunately only in the first 6 weeks from the date of purchase. I learned that lesson the hard way with a W.E. Fanz Kafka.
Thanks! I bought from Ali because it was $3. Not sure when it will show up but I am not in a hurry. Lots going on yet to be posted.
@@HemingwayJones We go up so often a couple times a month. I try to stay clear of Salem between Oct 1 and November 2. TDM is different from SW ...
So strange. Because my MB 146/149 with M and F nibs write distinctly differently.
thank you so much for the nice comments and for watching my video.
Nice to have one with a personal history.
I have the 146. I’m considering a 149. What size nib is yours?
Hello, My Friend, this one is a Medium. All the best.
@@HemingwayJones - Thank you. I hope you’re well. Loving my journal from Bottega Obscura. Thank you for the recommendation!
Awesome. You know I love them!
Hello Hemingway,
I also have this pen because it is said that you have to have it.
If you lived closer, I would liberate that 149 from you! ;-)
@@HemingwayJones Well... that's suspected of being hypocritical...:)
You equate the MB 149 with the absolute fountain pen idea that could come from Plato…
If that's not cult-making, then I don't understand the world anymore….
I've never heard anything quite like it about MB149…
That's the greatest praise one can dream up...
I can only take your statement metaphorically and more as a funny statement than a real assessment...
I'm at home in Vienna…
I'll keep the 149 to always have proof that there are many things better and more affordable than it.

I used the word hypocritical just to hilariously imply that it's inconsistent when you say "I don't know about the cult status" As far as I understand the world (you're making that up in question :) your video contributes enormously to the cult of the MB 149...
I'm terribly sorry that I can't share your enthusiasm...:(
I hope that we can understand each other better in the future...

Hello Michael,
Thanks for the kind reply and explanation.
I like the Crowley candles....
What is written on your hand, Hemingway? At 3:14 you can see it. Is it to remind you of something?
Haha! No, not at all. That’s a “tattoo” that my daughter makes. She writes in marker on tape and sticks it to me. You can see it in a lot of my videos! LOL!
😂 too perfect!
masterpiece indeed
Thank you!
Dear Mr. Jones,
As you are a fountain pen user for both business and pleasure, and not a retailer, I would value your opinions on your favorite permanent inks.
Hello and thank you! Perhaps surprisingly I don’t often use permanent inks because of the danger of spilling but when I do, I usually use Sailor Black. Kiwaguro.
It's a big pen! I prefer the 146 for the size is better for my hands. But this pen is a classic, that's for sure! :)
Truly! Thanks so much!
Not in my collection. The MB is my holy grail pen. One I hope to purchase one day. Question for you, have you ever climbed the Montblanc mountains?
It’s such a Brilliant pen! Love it. Sadly, I have not. All of my mountaineering, rock and ice were done in the States. MA, PA, NY, NH, & CO. Thanks!
Thanks very much! I filmed that a while ago so
It was either Kon peki or J Herbin Sapphire. I’m thinking the latter.
Personally I find the Pilot Custom 823 to be a superior pen to the 146. Better filling, greater capacity, more consistent nib, cheaper!
That is definitely an issue. So sorry. Thanks for watching the video. All the best.
Thank you very much! You definitely get this video and what I set out to do. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Stop by again soon.
I will admit to a degree of objectophilia towards some of my pens, though i have never had the opportunity to acquire anything quite that nice. I suppose my pilot custom 74 fills the same role though.
The Pilot Custom 74 is a wonderful pen. You have excellent taste.
How were you able to get an 18K? 🇫🇷
I may have been misinformed but I thought Montblanc (although being German) only sells 18K gold nibs in France. Don’t they only sell 14K for all other countries?
I am in Canada. Thank you
Oh… I just got there - you bought it in Venice.
Beautiful to see you liked Chateau Frontenac.🤗 I’m from Montreal.
Hi. My wife bought the MB from me here in the States. Depending on the years, they have 18 or 14K nibs. They have been 18 for a while. And are currently. Also, they are the same all over the world. Thanks for watching.
@@spruceguitar
Actually, it's the other way around...
I should have turned them on. Just wasn’t thinking. I don’t often film there but when it gets noisy inside. 5 yo, AC. You do what you can.
That is a fantastic strategy, My Friend! The modern MBs are quite good, but if I purchase another 149 it will probably be vintage. All the best!
Now if you were to get a heart tattoo with a Montblanc nib in the middle of the heart, then we would really know how much you care for the 149.
It’s part of my full back piece. All the best, My Friend.
hmmmmm, someday...
Absolutely!
I want to like this video, but there are currently 149 likes... conflict!
Haha
@@HemingwayJones I have now liked it since I wasn't the one that ruined it!
I’m so dumb. I should have caught that! I read this after reading three troll comments and it put me in on a negative perspective. So sorry.
I’d love to imagine a nib finer. I don’t SBRE Brown. I’ll have to seek that out some time. Thanks so much for watching.

Dear sir, "SBRE Brown" is just one more person (like you and me) who gives his opinion.
Eeh... its definitely a nice pen...but for me..I find them waaay too high on a pedestal..and plain. It's a classic though.
